Welcome to November in Oxford

Once again we’ve got a bumper issue for you this month. We have some excellent reviews andinterviews for you in this issue, including Anna Hobson’s interview with Miss Oxford, AliceChristian, who is targeting success in the December Miss Great Britain contest, with which wewish her every success.

We have a South American feel about our Restaurant Reviews this month, with burrito favouriteMission Mexican under the spotlight and also our third annual review of Las Iguanas. The rest ofthe team at In Oxford also spent one Friday lunchtime – I’m sure it spilled over to about 4pm –at Oxy Oriental. Once again, I was surplus to requirements and I was surprised they didn’t askme to write the review, having feasted for what seemed like hours! They must have enjoyedthemselves as Jenny proclaimed we should make it a weekly ‘tradition’!

Anna also enjoyed the decadent surroundings of Oxford’s most exciting new club, Roppongi inGeorge Street. If you would like to enjoy Roppongi yourself, check out The Shop @ In Oxfordwhich has a seriously fantastic deal to tempt you in! For just £100 get access with five friendsto the VIP area, plus a bottle of Dom Perignon Champagne and a bottle of Grey Goose Vodka, plus mixers – worth £300! Hurry, these will be gone in a flash!

Tracy Hoy breaks into a sweat to review Esporta in North Oxford, with reviews on the tennis andspa facilities to come in future issues.

So get stuck in to October in Oxford, but don’t forget www.inoxford.com has more listings, morereviews and some great offers to take advantage of at our Shop @ In Oxford. If Tracy has givenyou the incentive to try Esporta, why not be brave and buy a one-off monthly membership athalf price through the Shop. Go on – get fit for Christmas! You’ll feel less guilty!

Shopping Review

The Casa Rose "experience" started life in June 2004, with a small gift shop onWalton Street in the heart of Jericho. Inspired by "old hollywood" chic and fromher time living in Spain. Proprietor Rose Lyburn wanted to bring the relaxedSpanish feel into Walton Street. "I loved the atmosphere, the products and thewhole experience of shopping in small, friendly boutiques. Anyone who hasvisited Paris will realise the same feeling there too. Individual, unique boutiques, layed back, friendly informal service...european lifestyle !

“Our focus is a lot more on gifts, accessories, smaller pick-up pieces, so customers cancome in and they don’t have to focus on fashion. It’s a very ‘feel good’ sort of shop, it’sa very uplifting shop and allows you to escape real life…..which can be very nice!”

Rose ensures that her customers not only get value for money, but excellent quality.“Whether it’s gifts, fashion, simple little basics, and cashmere-mix cardigans, I alwaysfocus on quality. I want my customers to feel beautiful in my wonderful silk, cotton andnatural product clothes. I try to make sure that the products enhance shape and makeyou feel good. We also have a lot of accessories, beautiful silk scarves and other itemsto complement your outfit.”

Casa Rose has also undergone a recent shop front facelift, which Rose is delighted with.“We’ve gone for a flamingo pink and cream so it gives it a really vibrant, new look andthis helps me to really put our stamp on things and enhances the brand which hasbeen evolving since we opened.”

Rose’s long-awaited new website is also launching which she is very excited about.“We have an e-commerce section which we hope will be really successful. I’m also a‘Twitterer’ which is fun and will, I am sure, help us. We have also recently teamed upwith Marie Claire and are proud to be one of their ‘Hot Spots’ in the magazine.”

Times are changing fashion-wise and Rose is well aware of what today’s customerneeds. “Customers want a more personal service as opposed to the High Street. Theyare being a bit more cautious but what they want is service, the feel-good factor whenthey’re buying, and they want to go in and just buy smaller items at a better price thatwill cheer up their day! That’s what I feel we can offer. Our following is growing everyday - we’re at the 2,000 customers mark now. I’m very appreciative of my loyalcustomers, because, without those loyal customers where would we be?”

Makiko, Rose’s ‘right-hand man’ is also a key part of Rose’s success. “Without Makiko, well…… I don’t know where I’d be. She’s almost equivalent to being my husband! Shehas been here four years now and is a complete rock to me in the business, in my life, and in a lot of decisions that I make. We’re reaching out to new customers to come andfind us because it really is a little hidden gem that’s just outside the heart of Oxford. We are a great team and we have something for everyone.“

Alice Christian was recently awarded the title of Miss Oxfordshire, a fittingappellation for such a delightful, attractive and stylish young woman. Earlier thisyear, her sister encouraged her to apply, and after competing with many othercontestants Alice walked away with the crown. The regional competition, whichhas been running for 65 years, involved individual interviews with the judges, anevening gown catwalk, and answering questions on stage. Winners of theregional events are automatically put forward for the Miss Great Britain contestwhich takes place in December.

From an early age, Alice was involved in the performing arts, attending courses at theMet Film School, the American Academy of Performing Arts and the Guildhall Schoolof Music and Drama, before completing her degree in Fine Art at the University ofLeeds. After graduating, she went travelling and saw productions that inspired her topursue acting and performing as a career. To date, Alice has appeared in short films, advertisements and music videos, as well as doing some commercial modelling.

Alice has thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this year’s event, and would never havebelieved that she would be on her way to the Miss Great Britain final. She enjoyshaving the title of Miss Oxfordshire, and appreciates the opportunities that haveopened up for her. Charity events are particularly important, recently posing as MissOctober in the Breast Cancer Campaign fundraising calendar, dressed as SophiaLauren for the 1950s pin-up theme. Alice relishes the opportunity to use her title forpositive endeavours knowing this is a once in a lifetime opportunity giving her newexperiences and friendships along the way.

What sets Alice apart from the other competitors is her passionate patriotism, and shewould be proud to travel the world as Miss Great Britain, a long-standing andprestigious award. Recently taken over by Liz Fuller, Alice believes the competition hasonce more been brought to life. As well as opening up the entry criteria to includedivorcees and single mums with no constraints on physical appearance, the beautypageant is also going back to its roots.

The climate has shifted from the stereotypical view of old: the competition allowswomen to shine as individuals. Alice is still aware of the prejudice towards thecompetitors, but is proud to participate in a classy event focusing on ambition, career, talent and education, as well as presenting oneself well.

So, with 2 months to go until the final event, Alice is looking for her lucky break thatwill help her fulfil her dream of becoming a successful actress. Her advice to anyonethinking of entering a beauty pageant is to just go for it: the judges know that beautyradiates from within.

Purchase the 1950's pin-up calendar: www.marcellopozzetti.co.uk. Vote for Alice: text MISS OXFORDSHIRE to 81118; call 09012 937 937 quoting number 43; visit www.missgreatbritain.co.uk.Her personal website is www.alicechristian.com.

The menu offers a huge range of burritos, fajitas, tacos and salads. But for a true‘Mission Experience’ , you can compose your own ideal burrito just by choosing yourfavourite salsa, beans and fillings, such as chicken, vegetarian, steak or pork.

I would recommend the ‘Carnitas Buritto’. This is a large flour tortilla filled with blackbeans, sour cream, rice, salsa and ‘carnitas’. Carnitas is slow roasted pork that has beenseasoned with fresh bay leaves, orange zest and thyme. The meat is then cooked untilit ‘falls apart’. Ask the waiter for extra cheese and guacamole if you are feelingextravagant!. And of course, there is nothing better than a nice, cool Mexican beer tofinish the dish off.

Don’t worry if you’re not a big fan of spicy food. The Mission has three levels of salsasto go with the dishes, the next hotter than the last. But don’t worry, you can taste eachone before you cover your food! My preference was for the mild Pico de Gallo, whichmeans ‘Roosters Beak’. Legend has it that the name refers to the spiciness or, in mylanguage, ‘pain’ that you would feel if the rooster were to peck your tong! This salsaconsists of diced tomato, chopped onion and spicy Serrano peppers, finished off withrefreshing lemon juice.

The founders of the Mission found their inspiration to open their first outlet aftervisiting the Mission District in San Francisco, California. This is the home of musicianCarlos Santana and is famous for its burritos. Nothing but fresh ingredients are usedwhen preparing the dishes, as in the Californian version

The combination of light wood and cayenne pepper coloured walls gives you theauthentic Mexican feeling. This restaurant is ideal for anyone who appreciates greatvalue for money – isn’t that all of us!?. Moreover, the restaurant tries and succeeds tobe environmental friendly.

The Mission offers great food for incredible prices. Make sure you ‘build your own’ toget the real benefit of a visit to The Mission.

Mexican food has never tasted as good!

Night Club Review

Roppongi lounge and club opened earlier this year and is a stylish, classy barconveniently located on the popular George Street in the heart of the city. Thename is derived from an area in Japan known for housing the rich and famous, andthis is the tone that the manager is aiming for.

Complete with red carpet and glowing lights, the door leads down sparkling stairs intothe small but attractive club. The walls are decorated with mosaic mirrors that glitterin the lights, and the furniture is a tasteful glass, chrome and leather, with slateflooring. The VIP area is a secluded and luxurious space, sectioned off with drapingthreads, and on each table is a stylish drinks cooler perfect for that bottle of champagnethat must be enjoyed in such upmarket surroundings.

The professional staff are friendly and welcoming, ensuring you feel relaxed and cateredfor. There is an extensive selection of drinks, including classic cocktails, non-alcoholiccocktails, wine, bottled beer and champagne. There is also a small selection of barsnacks for very reasonable prices. Special offers include ‘after work drinks’ at reducedprices between 5:30 until 8:30. Roppongi’s ‘signature hours’ offer reduced price drinksbetween 8:30 and 11pm, including cocktails, champagne and shots. Premier DJs playclassic dance, current pop and house music, perfect for dancing or simply setting thescene whilst you socialise. The dance floor is a modest size and although there isn’tmuch seating throughout the club and it can get quite crowded, the great atmosphereand contemporary music creates a cool vibe.

Although some of the details were lacking, for example the toilet facilities andfinishing touches to the décor were noticeably disappointing, Roppongi hasundoubtedly started to shake off the reputation left by their predecessors.

Guest appearances from Calum Best, some of the cast form Hollyoaks and othercelebrities are a regular occurrence at Roppongi, adding to the glitzy and glamorous feelof this unique place. Make sure you keep an eye out for events hosted by the rich andfamous. Fantastic reservation packages are available, ranging from silver to platinum, each offering waitress service, free entry for a limited number of guests and a selectionof drinks, guaranteeing an evening of VIP treatment, whatever you are celebrating.Check out the website for more details.

Roppongi is open 7 nights a week, 5:30pm until late during the week and until 3amFridays and Saturdays. It attracts a discerning audience of young professionals andthose who appreciate the finer things in life. This stylish and contemporary lounge baris a must for anyone who wants a modern club with likeminded people, without theundertones of excess apparent in so many other venues.

Restaurant Review

This is our third annual and much awaited review of Las Iguanas, the kids’favourite by a mile. So much so, that word has spread amongst their friends andthis year Ed bought Felix and Abi and Elena joined forces to go head to head withthe boys.

Seated in one of the huge circular tables in the heart of the restaurant, the table wassoon covered in two for one non alcoholic Citrus and Raspberry Coolers, curly fries andthe odd Gin and Tonic.

Abi and Elena were tempted by the four fat whole prawns, split and cooked in a garlic, lemonade and chili sauce, served with bread to start with whilst Ed, for the third yearrunning, devoured the nachos with chili con carne. Felix tried to snatch the odd nachowhilst Ed wasn’t paying attention!

Tina and I shared ‘Pato Taquito’, shredded roast duck and caramelised onion rolled in aflour tortilla, char-grilled & served with sticky chili jam. Delicious.

For mains, I went for the chicken fajitas, which were fantastic as usual, whilst Abi chosethe chili braised in spiced tomatoes, served with garlicky rice, warmed soft tortillas, soured cream and corn tortilla chips. Elena was slightly more adventurous and went forthe flame-grilled rump steak, and Felix just wanted ‘any steak he could have’! He hadthe South American sirloin ‘aged for at least twenty one days’, apparently. Tina had the‘Ensopado de Carne’, a tender, slow-braised goat in coconut milk and tomatoes withchilies, carrot and cassava, served with coriander rice, farofa and sweet plantain. Themummy said it was ‘yummy’! I know, a cheap line!

Another round of two for one non alcoholic cocktails brought the glass count to about126 on the table, but they were enjoying it, so why spoil their fun!

But that’s the great thing about Las Iguanas. It’s great fun, great food in a livelyenvironment. We were in on a Sunday evening at 6pm, quite often a slow time forrestaurants, but Las Iguanas was almost full, which is a great sign for any restaurant.

Las Iguanas, located on Park End Street, less than half a mile from Oxford Castle andthe very centre of Oxford, has secured itself a reputation for great food, excellentcustomer service and a fresh, upbeat environment.

We shared an assortment of desserts, including ‘Quindim de Yaya’, meaning ‘girlishcharm’, a Brazilian-style homemade sweet baked coconut custard flan, served with aberry compote, and the indulgent ‘Chocolate Pot’.

Once again we had had a great time, and even though I’ve said it before, Las Iguanasis the perfect family restaurant!
