Charles Alley (BScEE'49) We are saddened to announce Charlie's passing on Tuesday Feb 17, 2015 at

Woodhall Park Specialty Care. Beloved husband of Carol, loving father to Karen (Ron), Bill (Leslie), Don,

Keith (Janet). Proud grandfather of Jennifer, Andrew, Darren, Mitchell, and Heather, and great-

grandfather of Jackson and Julianna. A true family man who will be greatly missed. Funeral service to be

held on Sunday Feb 22, 2015 at 3:00pm in the chapel at Scott's Funeral Home in Brampton. Visitation

will be prior to service from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm.

Juanita Atkins (Fowler, BEd'80, MEd'90) Surrounded by her family on June 9, 2015, Juanita Louise

Atkins (Fowler) of Fredericton passed away in Fredericton. Juanita was the wife of Alan Atkins. Born in

Saint John on March 29, 1958, she was the daughter of Leta Fowler (Gordon) and Kenneth (Joan) Fowler.

Juanita was an elementary school teacher for 35 years, beginning her career in Fort McMurray, AB. After

9 years, she and Alan moved back to New Brunswick where they both got their Master’s degree and jobs

in Fredericton. Juanita loved to take pictures of the beautiful scenery around her, the sunrises and

sunsets. She also loved to sew, knit, bake and spend time with her family. She and Alan were long time

volunteers with the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival and she enjoyed camping and travelling, eventually

finding Barbados as her happy spot and cheering on the UNB Varsity Reds Men’s Hockey. A loving wife,

mother, daughter, sister and aunt, she is survived by her husband of 35 years, Alan Atkins; her son,

Matthew Atkins (Ji Young Yoon) of Calgary; her parents, Leta Fowler of Fredericton and Kenneth (Joan)

Fowler of Sussex; brother, Gordon Fowler of Fredericton; his daughters, Stephanie Fowler of Ottawa and

Allison Fowler of Fredericton; sister, Marilyn (Bruce) Baird and their children, Andrew Baird of Ottawa,

Hilliary Baird of Fredericton and Heather Baird of Saint John; her in-laws, Al and Joyce Atkins of

Miramichi City and brother in law, Bruce Atkins (Alma) of Calgary.Visitation will take place at York

Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Friday, June 12, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Funeral

Service will be held at Brunswick Street Baptist Church on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 2 pm with Rev. Dr.

Terry Atkinson officiating. A private interment will take place in Pickard Merrithew Cemetery. The

Peter Atkinson (BA'82) The passing of Peter Ewart Atkinson of Fredericton, NB, husband of Kerry

(Fawcett) Atkinson occurred on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital.

Born on February 11, 1961 in Fredericton, NB, he was the son of Francis Atkinson and the late Catherine

“Kaye” (Loane) Atkinson. Peter was a Real Estate Appraiser and partner at Fredericton Appraisals and

Associates. Peter was a proud past president of the Real Estate Board of the Fredericton Area Inc.,

where he also served on numerous committees throughout his 32 years in the industry. He served on

committees with the New Brunswick Real Estate Association and New Brunswick Association of Real

Estate Appraisers. Peter loved to spend time with the loves of his life; his wife of 29 years, his children

and grandchildren that he was so supportive and proud of. Peter cherished every friendship he made

throughout life and especially enjoyed the time spent with friends over the years on snowmobile trips,

vacations, annual treks to the Amherst Shore, Westchester and most recently with the Doberman

Owners Group (D.O.G.). Each December friends would call to let Peter know when “The Sound of Music”

would be on which was an annual tradition he and his mom shared, that he carried on in her memory. In

addition to his father and wife, Peter is survived by his daughter, Catherine “Ashley” Atkinson and son,

Eric Peter Atkinson both of Fredericton, NB; grandchildren, Olivia and Owen Atkinson; sisters, Karen

Davidge (Brock) of Keswick Ridge, Kim Cameron (Ian) of England and Shonn Martin (Kim) of Waterloo,

ON; brother, Michael Atkinson (Marylee) of Fredericton; mother in law, Mardie Fawcett; sisters in law,

Dianne Clowater (Jim) and Susan LeBlanc (Jack); Brennan McDonnell whom Peter thought of as a son

and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on

Thursday, April 9, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Memorial Service will take place at Nashwaaksis

United Church on Friday, April 10, 2015 at 2 pm with Rev. J. D. Kennedy officiating. Honourary

Pallbearers will be Don Good, Rob Faulkner, Blair Lahey, John Yerxa, Chris Smith, Paul Barrett, Jimmy

Walker and Jim Leonard. Interment will take place in Fredericton Rural Cemetery at a later date. For

William Baker (BSc'57) No obituary available.

Lorne Berggren (BScCE'56) R. L. (LORNE) BERGGREN P.Eng Lorne Berggren passed away peacefully at

Baycrest April 27, 2015 surrounded by his family. Born in Pembroke in 1932 and a graduate of University

of New Brunswick, Lorne was a highly successful and respected businessman. He was a noted pioneer in

the North American plastics industry. Lorne will be lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 60 years,

Joan, daughter Cynthia Brooks (Dan), son Don Berggren (Karen), brother Don Berggren and

grandchildren Leah Garvin (Dennis), Emily Berggren, Lauren Cleator (Scott) and Meredith Berggren. For

their compassionate care and kindness, the family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the nurses

of St. Elizabeth Society, Dr. A. J. Kirshen and Dr. Daphna Grossman and the staff of Baycrest. The family

will receive friends at the Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Ave. E., Agincourt (east of Kennedy Rd.),

on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service to be held in the Ogden Chapel on Friday at 12 p.m.

Cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Baycrest Palliative Care or The Lung

Ralph Black (BSc'69, BEd'71) It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Ralph Edward

Black which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday, January 3rd, 2015. Born 1946, in

Saint John, he was the son of the late Helen (Croft) and Cecil Black. He attended UNB receiving both his

BSC and BED. Ralph enjoyed spending time with his immediate and extended family. A very private

person, he kept close tabs on all his family members. He was also very loyal to his church family, the

congregation of Holy Trinity Church, in St. Martins. As a young man he was an excellent baseball player.

The teams he played for, and against, were a source of conversation throughout his life. He was closely

connected to Simonds High school where he spent his career as a teacher of Mathematics and yearbook



advisor. He continued his interest and support of the school throughout his retirement. Ralph loved all

the gang at Burger King on Rothesay Avenue. He was an avid follower of all things related to the Port of

Saint John especially the tugs, tankers, and LNG carriers. Ralph is survived by his brothers Earle

(Paulette) of Saint John, Donel (Wanda) of Saint John, brother-in-law David Bamford; nieces and

nephews Sheila, Heather, Jennifer, Cindy, Mike, and Maggie as well as many cousins and friends. Besides

his parents Ralph was predeceased by his special mother Muriel (Baker) Black and sister Karen Bamford.

The family would like to thank everyone who supported Ralph through their care and attention during

his illness. A special thanks to the doctors and nurses who cared for him, especially Claudette in the

Neuro ICU and the nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit. A special thanks to Reverend Canon Leo

Martin for spiritual support and friendship. Thanks to all for the prayer support for Ralph and his family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with

visitation being held on Tuesday, January 6th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will take

place from the Fundy Funeral Home chapel on Wednesday, January 7th at 2 p.m. followed by an

interment at Mosher Hill Cemetery, St. Martins. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ralph may

be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick, Canadian Cancer Society, St. James

(Lakewood) or Holy Trinity (St. Martins).

Peter Blair (BA'69) Peter F. Blair of Moncton passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2015, at The Dr.

George L. Dumont University Hospital. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Maura, and daughter,

Shannon. He is predeceased by his parents, David and Joyce Blair, and survived by a sister, Margaret

Brittain. In honouring Peter’s wishes, there will be no service or visitation. Donations in his memory may

Leslie Boulter (BT'63) The passing of Frank Leslie “Les” Boulter of Fredericton, NB, husband of Bettie-

Anne (Spinney) Boulter occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional

Hospital. Born on July 5, 1934 in Currieburg, NB, he was the son of the late Frank and Harriet (Thomas)

Boulter. Les was a School Teacher, he taught in NB and abroad. He was an active member of St. Mary’s

Anglican Church. In addition to his wife, Les is survived by his sons, Ross Boulter (Cheryl) of Kingston, ON

and Brian Boulter (Marianne) of Ottawa, ON; grandchildren, Chris, Page, Maria and Andrea; great

grandchild, Aurelia; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters,

Margaret Estabrooks and Hilda Banks, and his brother, George Boulter.Visitation will take place at St.

Mary’s Anglican Church, 770 McEvoy Street, on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 from 2 to 6 pm. A Memorial

Service will take place at St. Mary’s Anglican Church on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at 2 pm with Father

Murray Bowen (BSF'49) WWII Veteran. Murray died peacefully at home in his sleep on Monday,

February 23, 2015 at age 93. Beloved husband of the late Phyllis May Bowen for 62 years. Loved father

of Dawn (the late Ray) and Cheryl. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Kimberly (Steve), Shane

(Ginette), Samantha (Lon), Melanie, Ericka (Don), and also his 8 great- grandchildren Andrew, Nicole,

Kory, Emma, Logan, Maddox, Carter and Kaius. Murray was a member of the RCAF as a tail gunner, was

captured by the Germans and spent 3 1/2 years in POW camps before escaping. He then returned to

Canada and pursued an education and career as a professional forester and research scientist and



worked for the Federal Department of Forestry until the age of 65. The family wishes to extend a very

heartfelt thanks to all the caregivers that were so kind and devoted. A Funeral Service will be held on

Friday, March 6, 2015 at the Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel (2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa) at 1 p.m. In

David Bradshaw (BSF'54, MF'69) March 26, 1930 - May 19, 2015. BRADSHAW, David Bernard Age 85

years of Halifax passed away peacefully on May 19th, 2015 at the Victoria General hospital in Halifax.

Born in Musquodoboit Harbour, he was a son of the late Rev. Canon A.G. & Margaret Bradshaw. He is

survived by his wife Shirley, daughters Catherine and Brenda, granddaughters, Caitlin and Ally and

brother, Malcolm (Shirley). He was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick, class of ’54 Forestry

and Masters in ’69. A member of the Canadian Institute of Forestry since 1955. He was predeceased by

an infant daughter Sheila, sisters Beryl Day, Patte and brother Charles. Graveside service 11:30 a.m.

Monday May 25th in Pine Grove Cemetery, East Stewiacke. A reception will follow at Fox Hollow Golf

and Country Club, Stewiacke.

Charity Buckingham (BA'74, LLB'83) Beloved daughter of the late Burleigh D. and Naomi M. (Foster)

Buckingham, Charity Susan Buckingham passed away peacefully at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional

Hospital on Friday, March 6, 2015 following a courageous and valiant battle with cancer. She was 62.

Her passing was with the same grace and quiet dignity with which she lived her life. We will miss our

dear sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great-aunt, niece, cousin and friend. Charity graduated from the

University of New Brunswick in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and went on to teach music in the

Perth Andover and Aroostook schools for six years. Although Charity enjoyed her teaching experience,

she decided to pursue a career as a lawyer and returned to the School of Law at the University of New

Brunswick. She graduated in 1983 and joined the firm of Kenny, Jackson and Murray. She eventually

became a law partner in the Grant, Corey, Cable and Buckingham firm and then established a private

practice from her home in Hanwell, N.B. Charity has been active with the Extramural Hospital and was a

past member of the foundation and served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees. In addition,

Charity has also been an instructor on various Bar Admission courses and was also a past president of

the York Sunbury Law Society. Charity had many talents which included such things as knitting, sewing,

cooking and music. She also enjoyed the outdoors. She loved walks, skiing and swimming. Charity was

also a hunter and joined her brother on some moose hunts. Charity loved spending time at her cottage

with family on East Grand Lake and could often be found sitting out next to the lake either enjoying the

view, reading her favorite book or having a much deserved snooze. Charity’s kind personality, loyalty

and attention to detail will be missed by everyone who knew her. Charity was a dedicated and active

member of the Hanwell Community Church and was actively involved with the music ministry as their

principle pianist. She also served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. As an extension of her church

ministry she opened her home to those who loved getting together especially for Home Bible Studies.

Charity was a dearly loved sister to Prudy Libby of French Lake, NB and Stephen Buckingham and his

wife Valerie of Fosterville, NB. She leaves behind five nieces and nephews who always held a special

place in her heart, Cade Libby (Jayne) of Waasis, NB, Bree Wood (Brad) of French Lake, Cort Libby

(Rebecca) of Cold Stream, Laura Chase (Brendan) of Keswick Ridge and Kyle Buckingham of Cole

Harbour, NS as well as eight much loved great-nieces and great-nephews; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Charity will be greatly missed by her faithful canine companion, “Sophie”. Besides her parents, Charity

was predeceased by her brother-in-law, David H. Libby (2014) and several aunts and uncles. The family


will receive visitors at the Hanwell Community Church, 3 Deerwood Drive, Hanwell, NB on Monday,

March 9, 2015 from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. A service celebrating the life of Charity Buckingham will be

held from the church on Tuesday at 11:00 AM with Rev. Dr. Mike McDonald officiating assisted by Rev.

Laurie Fenerty and Rev. Dr. Perry Hanley. Interment will be held in the Lower Fosterville cemetery at a

Laura Bulmer (BBA'09) It is with profound sadness that the family of Laura Kristen Bulmer, of

Fredericton N.B., announce her passing, surrounded by her loving family, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers’

Hospital on February 28th, 2015. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, on August 16th, 1986, Laura was a graduate

of Moncton High School and then completed her studies in Business Administration at the University of

New Brunswick. Laura was employed by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. For many years

Laura was an active member and employee at the Fredericton YMCA. Laura enjoyed soccer and

participated in the 2003 Canada Winter Games in short track speed skating for Team New Brunswick.

She found strength in sharing her journey through an online blog, which had an impact on many. Laura

is survived by her parents, Kevin and Joan Bulmer of Fredericton, NB; her sister, Alison (Kyle Graves) and

their children, Molly and Sawyer of Quispamsis, N.B.; her brother, Luke of Fredericton, N.B.; her aunt,

Charlene Bulmer (Dave Methot) of Dorchester, N.B.; her uncle, Ted Gray of Toronto, Ontario;

grandmothers, Emma Bulmer of Dorchester N.B., Jean Gray of Kemptville, Ontario and Norma Dagenais

of Vars, Ontario. Laura is predeceased by her aunt, Nancy Gray and uncle, Peter Bulmer. She will be

sadly missed by her devoted companion, Bentley. Visitation will take place at McAdam’s Funeral home

on Monday, March 2nd, 2015 from 6 to 8 pm and on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2015 from 2 to 5 pm. A

funeral service will be held at Wilmot United Church on Wednesday, March 4th, 2015 at 3:00 pm. Rev.

Ellen Beairsto and Rev. Rose-Hannah Gaskin will be officiating. Special thanks to Doctors Gowan,

Bill Cadigan (LLB'89) William (Bill) Cadigan, LL.B, age 54, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March

1st, 2015. Predeceased by his mother Catherine, he leaves to mourn his buddy and partner Alanna

Greene, his most cherished sons, Teddy and Jack, his treasured step-daughter Anna Winter, the boy's

Mom Janet Case, his sister Suzy Power (Frank) and his father David (Patricia) along with a very large

circle of friends. William (Bill) A. Cadigan was born and raised in St. John's, a student at St. Bon's and

Brother Rice High School, graduating in 1977. Bill acquired degrees in pharmacy and philosophy but

found his true professional calling in the law. Bill received his LL.B. from the University of New Brunswick

in 1989, completing his articles with Public Prosecutions. After his call to the bar on April 11th,1990, Bill

practiced law with the firm of O'Brien, Furey, Smith where he remained until July of 1997. In 1997 Bill

was appointed Executive Director of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association, where he

remained until April of 2000. During his time with the RNCA, Bill provided legal advice to the

Association's Executive and represented individual officers on matters requiring the assistance of legal

counsel. Bill joined Public Prosecutions in 2000 as a Crown Attorney, an occupation he was devoted to

until his passing. Always mindful of his duties as a Crown Attorney, Bill approached his cases with

fairness and the heart of an advocate. Bill had a tremendously quick wit and a vast sense of humor. He

was immensely popular with his colleagues, the defence bar, court staff, members of the RNC, and even

many of those he prosecuted. While he wore his humor on his sleeve, lesser known was his keen sense

of compassion for persons, who owing to whatever circumstances, were suffering through tough times,

especially persons who were mentally ill, down on their luck, or life had gotten the better of. Bill will be

missed greatly by his colleagues. Beyond his contributions to morale, he was never too busy to help,

never said he could not do something, and cared about the well-being of those doing the challenging

work of prosecutors. Billy is irreplaceable. He will be remembered, mourned and celebrated by far too

many to mention. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home LeMarchant Road. Visitation on Thursday and Friday

from 2 pm - 4 pm and 7 pm - 9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at

9:30 am at St. Teresa's Church, with cremation to Follow. Inurnment to be held on Monday, March 9,

2015 at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Mary Caissie (Fewer, BT'75) It is with sad hearts that the family of Mary Jane Caissie announce her

passing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Thursday April 23, 2015. She was 71. Born in

Deerville, NB, she was the daughter of the late Earl Fewer and Mary (Keilty). Catholic by faith, Mary was

a Teacher for over thirty five years, a past member of the CWL & enjoyed playing bridge in her spare

time. Survived by her husband Louis Caissie, one son Daniel Caissie of St. Andrews, one brother William

“Bill” Fewer (Marilyn) of Deerville, one grandchild Ava, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her

parents, Mary was predeceased by one brother Owen, one sister Phyllis and a special Aunt and Uncle

Dan and Madeline White. At the family’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment

will be held at a later date in the St. Bonaventure Church Cemetery in Deerville NB. Donations in

Doris Callister (Flieger, BA'41) Doris Elspeth Callister (Flieger), Class of 1941 at U.N.B., passed away on

Feb. 21, 2015 in Sarnia, ON in her 95th year. Doris was born in Chatham, New Brunswick. She is

predeceased by her husband, Herbert G. Callister (1990), whom she met at CFB in Chatham; her parents,

Henry and Ella (Traer) Flieger; six brothers, including Barney Flieger, former Professor of Forestry at

U.N.B.; and six sisters. Loving mother of four, dear Nana of ten, and cherished “Great Nan” of eighteen.

Doris was the lifetime secretary of her class of 1941, and she captained the University Women’s

Basketball team to a championship in her final year! Her picture is evident in a mural at the entrance to

the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium at U.N.B. in Fredericton. Doris worked in the banking business until

she moved to Sarnia, ON in 1945. She raised her family, and did countless hours of volunteer work in

her church and community. Doris was a faithful financial supporter of U.N.B., and attended many

Alumni events over the years. She will be fondly remembered by family, friends, and former colleagues.

Glen Carson (BScCE'58) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Glen Carson on

Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the Moncton Hospital. Born in Hawkshaw, NB son of the late Wardlow

and Elva (Kilcollins) Carson. Glen is survived by his wife of 59 years Joan (Patterson), three daughters;

Linda (Lindsay), Cheryl, Betty (William) and one son Mike (Nancy), 11 grandchildren; Kristopher,

Graham, Jamie, Mandy, Chase, Michelle, Colton, Jesse, Kate, Melanie, and Travis as well as three great

grandchildren; Brooklyn, Ayla and Landon. Glen will also be sadly missed by three brothers; Paul (Ida),

Roy (Madeline), Ralph (Marguerite) and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Glen was

predeceased by three brothers Vaughn (Ellen), Floyd (Cavelle), Donald, and three sister-in-laws Jean,



Madeline, and Cavelle. Glen was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and great

grandfather. A well-known, and lifelong fiddler and in recent years he was part of the band “Just

Friends”. A civil engineer for CNR before he became an engineering instructor at NBCC. A toastmaster

for more than 35 years as well as a dedicated member and trustee of Steeves Memorial United Church.

Douglas Cartwright (ME'03) Beloved partner to Christine Legere, steadfast friend to many, devoted son

and uncle, adventurer and scientist, died peacefully on June 12, 2015, in St. John’s, NFLD after a valiant

battle with cancer. He was born July 18, 1964, in Calgary, Alberta. A lifelong learner and adventure-

seeker, Doug earned a Masters Degree in Geodesy and Geomatic Engineering from the University of

New Brunswick and worked across the country in positions he loved, including the Canadian

Hydrographic Services in Sidney, B.C., the Ocean Mapping Group at UNB in Fredericton, N.B., and finally

in St. John’s, N.L. where he shared his knowledge with young students as an instructor and Chair of the

Ocean Mapping program at the Marine Institute. Doug lived his life with simplicity and purpose,

travelling the world from pole to pole, mapping the ocean floor from the Arctic and Antarctic and many

points in between. He was a modest man with many hidden talents. He held a pilot’s license, rode

motorcycles, and horses, and once rode a bull in a rodeo. His calm, easy-going presence and natural

curiosity made him a good listener and exceptional friend. He built lasting friendships everywhere he

lived, and was happiest while enjoying great food (especially Christine’s cooking), wine and the

companionship of those he loved and who loved him back. He was a charter member, enthusiastic

supporter and half-hearted rule enforcer of the Winslow Street Supper Club (WSSC) in Fredericton.

Above all, Doug loved Christine, his best friend, constant companion and champion in a love story that

lasted two decades. He also leaves behind their sweet dog Tuzo. Doug leaves his parents, Margaret and

Dennis Cartwright, sister Colleen, brothers John and Billy, nieces Emma C., Gail C., Katrin C., Katie S., and

Emma S., and nephews Hugh C. and Kelso C. Doug and Christine received support during the past year

from devoted friends in St. John’s, especially Dave Thornhill and Dominique St. Hilaire and her family. A

Kenneth Chase (Class of'54) The passing of Kenneth Ronald Chase, of Fredericton, NB, husband of

Margaret (Smith) Chase, occurred on April 29, 2015 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born

on February 20, 1930 in Marysville, NB, he was a son of the late G. Clyde and Margaret (Sloat) Chase.

Kenneth retired as a Partner in the printing business, Centenial Print. He was a member of the Marysville

Baptist Church. Kenneth was very active in the community through Scouting, Kiwanis and Jaycees.

Henrik (Hank) Deichmann (BSF'57) The family of Forester and Naturalist, Kjeld Henrik Lund Deichmann,

known as Hank, are saddened to announce his passing which occurred on Tuesday, February 17, 2015,

at the Dr. V. A. Snow Centre, Hampton, NB, age 80. From Summerville, Kingston Penninsula, NB,

husband of Joanne (nee Buckle) Deichmann. He was born on October 15, 1934, at home in Summerville,

son of the late Kjeld and Erica (nee Matthiessen) Deichmann. Hank’s family was very important to him.

He helped us and his friends and neighbors in any way he could. Hank was kind, loving and fun. He loved

to cook for his family. After we bought a Bread Machine, he had a lot of fun baking bread for us and our

neighbors. He was an enthusiastic outdoors man. Hank enjoyed all kinds of outdoor activities; hiking,

canoeing, skiing, snowshoeing, bonfires on the beach, vegetable gardening and especially bird watching.

He also enjoyed photography, sketching, water color painting, reading and playing scrabble and other

games. Hank grew up on the shores of Kennebecasis Bay and after he retired he returned to where he

grew up. He continued to work for some years after retirement. He was very committed to his

community on the Kingston Peninsula and participated in many community events. Hank attended a one

room all grade school in Summerville until grade 8. He graduated from Saint John Vocational School

(Harbour View High) in Saint John in 1951. He graduated from U.N.B with a BSc in forestry in 1957. After

graduating he worked in the forestry industry for AND (Abitibi -Price) in Badger, NL as a chief on forest

re-inventory, then general foreman until 1963 and then he returned to NB to work for J.D.I. Woodlands

in Saint John as a Reforestation Forester until 1966. He then worked as a supervisor of Interpretation

with the Parks Branch of DNR in Fredericton until 1973.For two summers he investigated many canoe

routes in NB. (54 rivers/ water ways) From 1973 -1981 he worked as a Chief Naturalist at Fundy National

Park. In 1982 he worked as Resource Management Advisor at Terra Nova National in NL, then in 1988

transferred to Gross Morne National Park as Park Ecologist. He wrote a weekly column (Diary of a

Countryman) in the Corner Brook Western star. In 1995 he retired from full time employment but

engaged in the following activities: as a guide for Fundy Hiking & Nature Tours and Aquila Tours in

locations around Atlantic Canada, as an Elder Hostel instructor in bird identification, tides of the Bay of

Fundy and lead walks on Grand Manan. He did regular interviews with CBC-fm radio in Saint John as a

naturalist on the Mainstreet Program. He also had a regular column in the Hampton Herald and KV

Weekly. Other projects: a major contract for a vegetation survey at Portobello Creek for the Dept. of

Environment in 2004. Hank also published a book (Out & About, Identifying the flora & fauna of NB.) in

2005. He did vegetation and faunal surveys for Fundy Engineering & Consulting since 2001 for sites

around Saint John and Fredericton. Hank was also a private woodlot owner and managed his property in

co-operation with SNB. Hank is survived by his wife, Joanne, of 55 years; his children: Mark (Lena

Kristoffersen), Jocelyn (Gouri Bhuyan), Kirsten (Bob Oechsler); his grandchildren: Johan, Reuben, Thor,

Skylar, Luna-Marleen, Carl-Viktor, great grandson Eimod; his sisters: Elizabeth Harvor and Anneka

Gichuru and their children and grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was

predeceased by his infant son, his parents, his mother and father-in-law: Frances and Raymond Buckle,

George Demetre (BScEE'69) Dieppe, NB - The family of George Demetre mourns his sudden death on

Saturday, March 28th, 2015 at the age 69. Born in New Glasgow, NS to Greek immigrant parents, the

late Samuel P. and the late Mary (Chrisomalis) Demetre, he moved with his family to Montreal and grew

up there. George came to New Brunswick to study at UNB, graduated with an engineering degree, and

spent his life here. George worked for NB Tel/Alliant for over thirty years, and was an avid golfer, bridge

player and hockey dad. He was a computer geek before any of us knew what computers were. Warm-

hearted and generous, George had high standards, and he applied them equally to everyone, including

himself. He always had a kind streak and his sense of compassion emerged most in his later years:

George seemed happiest helping neighbors file their taxes or as a volunteer driver for late night revelers

on New Year’s. A true New Brunswicker, he didn’t judge or call attention to himself and he died the

same way, quietly in his sleep. George is survived by his son Gregory (Krista) of Fredericton, sisters

Beatrice (Jerry) Katsouris and Christine, both of Halifax, brother Theo of Gatineau, QC, nieces and

nephews, as well as his former wife, Stella of Shediac, with whom he retained a deep connection. He

lost two siblings in recent years, Nina (Andreas) Lambou of Athens, Greece and Peter of New Glasgow.

George DeMille (BSc'56) George Edmund Rufus DeMille, 80, of Fredericton, died February 23, 2015,

due to complications following a stroke. Born October 17, 1934, of parents, Charles Rufus DeMille and


Helen Victoria (Flewwelling), in Hampton, NB, he lived his life and death, surrounded by love. He

graduated from Hampton Consolidated School (1952), and, as a Beaverbrook Scholar, he received

degrees from UNB (BSc 1956), and McGill (MSc 1958, PhD 1964). He married Katherine McKellar, with

whom he reared three children, and moved to Fredericton in 1961, where he taught for 30 years in the

Department of Physics at UNB. In 2004, he married allison calvern. Active in the Unitarian Fellowship of

Fredericton, Scottish Country Dancing, and a Masters group of bridge players, George’s calm demeanor

was a touchstone for many in the community and across the country, such was his gentle reach. The

beloved recipient of many honours of the heart, George will be deeply missed. He is survived by sister,

Libby (Saint John); son, Iain (Fredericton); daughters, Janet (Thunder Bay) and Heather (Tom Lees,

Kingston); and grandchildren, Robyn and Andrew (Thunder Bay), and Catherine and Nicholas (Kingston).

Joseph Paul Elias (BA'64) Dr. Joseph Paul "Joe" Elias of Dartmouth passed away peacefully at the QE II

Victoria General Site on February 19, 2015 at the age of 73. First born of nine children to the late Zidie

and Armaline Paul Elias, he grew up in Minto, NB and graduated from UNB and Dalhousie University,

Faculty of Dentistry. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Marielle Losier of Tracadie, NB.

Wonderful father to Jana, amazing father-in-law to Pascal Roberge and doting "Pappy" to Clara and

Benoit. Survived by siblings Marthy (Henry Belliveau), Ronnie (Doug MacPherson), Mark (Sandy,

deceased), David (Rose, deceased), Alfred, Victor (Debbie), Alice (Dick Giggal) and Ruth, as well as many

nieces and nephews. He was blessed with his special angel, niece Joanne. Though there are many

wonderful things to mention about his life, he would say his greatest accomplishment was his family. He

was blessed with many loyal and devoted friends, many of whom were patients of his through 37 years

of practice at 99 Main Street, Dartmouth. Joe's devotion and kindness to his patients was evident to all.

Edwin Graham (BScEE'46, DSc'82) It is with heavy hearts that the family of Ed Graham, husband of the

late Marion (Steeves) Graham, announce his passing on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at his residence. Born

December 16, 1924, in Worchester, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Roy and Gladys (Fisher)

Graham. Ed was a great believer in education and empowerment of all individuals. Throughout his life,

his community support and projects helped shape New Brunswick. It is difficult to look around our

province to find an avenue of business or government that Ed has not directly impacted. He graduated

from Moncton High School in 1942. Ed then earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical

Engineering at UNB, Fredericton. (1946) He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science degree in

1982 from UNBSJ. Ed began his career with NBTEL in 1946 where he continued until his retirement as


Vice-President of Planning in 1990. Edwin was never content with just one career. He was also President

and Chief Executive Officer of Bruncor. While serving in this capacity, he was seconded by the provincial

government at the request of the premier and appointed to the Office of Government Reform. During

his leadership at Bruncor, Ed changed the landscape of New Brunswick with the development of

Brunswick Square in Saint John, Kings Place in Fredericton, and the Blue Cross Center in Moncton.

Besides his family, community service was Ed's passion. He became known in the province as “The Man

Who Got the Regional Hospital Built”. G. E. Graham was listed in both the “Who's Who in Canada” and

the “Who's Who in America” for his accomplishments in business and the community. He was appointed

to the Medical Research Council of Canada by the Prime Minister. He was appointed by the provincial

Minister of Health to serve as the President of the Saint John Region Joint Planning Committee. Ed was a

founding member and Chairman of the Board of the Extra- Mural Nursing Program in New Brunswick. Ed

served as Chairman of the Board of Governors at UNB. He was Past President of the Canadian Chamber

of Commerce, and Past President of the Atlantic Provinces Chamber of Commerce. Ed also served as the

President of the Canadian Standards Association, President of the Saint John Board of Trade, President

and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the United Way of Greater Saint John. Ed enjoyed serving as

a member of the board for many businesses: Saint John Energy, Fundy Linen, Major Foods and NB Coal.

However, for those who knew Ed's love of chocolate, his admitted favourite board to sit on was the

Ganong Brothers. They always made sure Ed received honorary chocolates long after he resigned.

grandchildren: Ryan (Sarah El-Shaarawi), Kurtis, Peter (Dominique Trotter), Mark, and Madeleine;

grandson-inlaw, Simon Hind; step-grandchildren: Martin Bowmaster, and Grace Bowmaster (Alex Green)

and their son Jack; sisters: Elizabeth King (Ralston) and Louise Fraser, both of Moncton; sister-inlaw,

Marcia Godsoe (Percy); brother-in-law, Gerald Steeves (Joyce); and his caregiver of ten years, Ida O’Neil.

She and her support staff, including Ed's own son Roger, provided Ed with a quality of life he might not

have otherwise received. The entire family thanks this group of dedicated individuals. The family would

Anne Harding (BPE'72) Harding, Beverley Anne. It is with great sadness that our family announces the

passing of Beverley Anne Harding on Sunday, May 10, 2015 in her 64th year. She was a beloved

daughter of E. Sarah Peterson and the late Burton Harding. Dear sister of David (Maureen) Harding,

Pictou Island and Halifax; loving aunt to their two daughters, Moira Harding, Halifax and Amy Harding,

Austin, Texas; also cherished sister of Stephen (Darleen) Harding, Kentville, and loving aunt to his three

Alberta. Born in Yarmouth, Anne began her travels early as an air force child growing up in Europe and

regions of Canada. After graduating from U.N.B. with a degree in Physical Education / Kinesiology, she

taught in Montreal, before embarking on a career in television with CBC, Halifax. She was an award

winning, on-air journalist, hosting current affairs shows and producing documentaries in Winnipeg,

Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto. Following a few spa vacations in the early 80’s, Anne began research

and full time travel across North America to self-publish her first spa travel guide, “Spa to Fitness” in

1986. Her second book, “Select Spas in Canada, USA, Mexico” soon followed in 1989. Having visited over

240 Spas during this intensive research and market analysis, she was contacted by management

consulting firms to prepare feasibility studies and development plans for Spas. Anne was off on a new

career. For 14 years, she covered the growing health Spa and fitness travel industry for Time, USA

Today, The Globe and Mail, Flare, Elle, etc., and launched her first Spa magazine for a US publisher, with

her as Executive Editor for 16 months. In 1997, she moved back home to Nova Scotia, launched her Spa

Quest magazine and continued consulting with the successful development of “Cascades”, a serenity

day Spa in Bedford and the stunning “Spa at Monastery” in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Anne will be

fondly remembered by her many friends and colleagues across Canada and the USA, in particular, her

dear friend, Dr. Susan Lindley, Montreal, Quebec. Cremation has taken place under the care of Atlantic

John Hawkes (BSc'77, MEd'92) Mr. John William Hawkes, 61 of Miramichi, passed away peacefully at

home on April 24, 2015, in the company of people who dearly loved him and supported him as he faced

ALS. John is survived by his loving wife Martha (Marty) nee MacLean, and their children Jessica (Steven),

John (Barby) and Maggie (Eric). John's partners in crime, Noah and Arlo, will carry forward vivid

memories of their fun-loving, mischievous "Granda". John was born in Chatham and spent his life in

service to the community he loved. He was the son of Kathleen (nee Gough) and J. Raymond Hawkes. He

was predeceased by his father, and is survived by his sisters Nancy (Blair Vessie), Mary Ellen (Rene

Pelletier), Carolyn (Robert McNichol), and his brothers Michael (Heather), Joe (Clare), Edward (Anne-

Marie). Uncle John's antics, advice and support will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews,

of whom he was so proud. John's passing will also be deeply felt by his MacLean family who have always

regarded him as their "big brother". John faced ALS the way he faced the rest of his life; with faith,

humility and positivity. A teacher to the end, he used his experience with terminal illness as an

opportunity to inspire us how to live - with a zest for life. John will best be remembered by many as a

beloved educator, an avid fisherman, an enthusiastic sportsman (Go Habs!) and a man of great faith.

John's greatest joy came from time spent with family and friends. They regarded him as 'larger than life',

and will remember his gentle counsel, sweet spirit and sense of mischief. As Miramichiers go; he was the

John Maxwell Henderson (MSF'86) It is with heavy hearts the family of John Maxwell Henderson,

announce his unexpected passing on February 18 due to natural causes. John was born May 5, 1959 in

St. Stephen, NB, son of Max and Janice (nee Clark) Henderson who are still residing in Campbellton.

John was in the last graduating class of Restigouche Senior High School in 1977. He continued his

education at Mount Allison University graduating with a Bachelor of Science. He then went on to study

at U.N.B. in Fredericton and obtained his Masters degree. John loved nature. His first job was foreman

of a crew planting trees north east of Campbellton. He spent most of his working career with the

department of Natural Resources in Fredericton. John always liked to be busy. As a teenager he built a

log cabin behind his parents cottage in Quebec. He renovated the cottage in Shediac, and worked

extensively on his home and sailboat in Fredericton. John loved animals especially Golden Retrievers.

Chipper was his first golden, then Tucker and currently Ella. He loved his goldens and they all loved him

back even more. John always welcomed his friends with open arms. He enjoyed weekend getaways at

the cottage in the summer or pot luck dinners in the winter after a day of skiing. John had a lot of

interests. He loved to run 10 km marathons, Tai Kwon Do, skiing, kayaking, and of course photography,

which many of his friends have hanging on their walls. John was and always will be loved very much by

his family and friends. John had a huge heart and loved his family; his parents, Max and Janice, his sister,

Susan, his nephew, Neal and Neal's partner Elyse. His life will be celebrated at Maher’s Funeral Chapel,

Ellen Hickey (BA'57, BEd'61) Sister Ellen Eileen Hickey of Patience Lane, Fredericton, formally of

Miramichi, passed away at the Dr. Everett Chambers Hospital on Monday, March 2nd, 2015 at the age of

92. Born in Boiestown, NB, she was the daughter of the late Weston and Nora (McNeil) Hickey. She was

a schoolteacher for 38 years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her

parents, she was predeceased by her sisters Mary and Noreen Carr and brothers, Leo and Laurie Carr.

Sister Ellen Eileen Hickey is resting at Davidson’s Funeral Home, 597 Old King George Hwy, with

visitation on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 3

pm at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with Father Tom Fowler officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s

Judith Hosford (BBA'79) Judith Hosford, 65, of Moncton, lost her brief battle with cancer on March 16,

2015, with family by her side. Born in Moncton, she was a daughter of Eleanor “Nan” (MacMillan)

Hosford and Edwin Hosford. Judy began her career as a Laboratory Technician at the Moncton Hospital

and later furthered her education, receiving her Bachelor of Business Administration degree (BBa) from

the University of New Brunswick. She was a faithful member of the Lewisville Baptist Church. Judy loved

to laugh. Her beautiful smile, loving and caring nature will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Besides her parents, she is survived by her sister, Debbie (Bill) Magee; Nieces, Krissy Magee and Ashley

(Karue) Wachira; special friend, Noella Gautreau; “Chloe and Gus”; and many aunts and cousins. A

memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Gordon MacLeod

Gerald Hughes (BScEE'40) Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the Perley & Rideau

Veterans' Health Centre in Ottawa. He is greatly missed by Mary (née Wade), his loving wife of 73 years,

his three sons, Michael, (Marianne), Christopher (Sharon) and Timothy (Julie), his grandchildren, Claire,

Veronica and Dawson, his surviving sister, Lois (Lorne), and many nieces and nephews. Gerry was born

in Sayabec, Quebec, attended high school in Campbellton, N.B., and the University of New Brunswick in

Fredericton as a Beaverbrook scholar. After completing his degree in Electrical Engineering he joined

Canadian General Electric briefly in Toronto, and then joined in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1941. He

enrolled in a joint British/Canadian project to degauss (de-magnetize) allied minesweepers in order to

protect them against enemy magnetic mines, and crossed the Atlantic numerous times on destroyers to

confer with his British counterparts. While on leave in 1941 he met the love of his life on board a CN

train from Montreal to Ottawa and they were married on February 28, 1942. Gerry was de-mobbed

from the navy in 1945 as Lieutenant Commander and immediately joined Canada's Foreign Service

(Trade Commissioner Service) in which he had a long and distinguished career until his retirement in

1983. Beginning in 1946 he served in Scotland, Turkey, Lebanon and Sweden as Trade Commissioner. He

served as Minister Commercial in London and Rome and as Ambassador in Ankara and High

Commissioner in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. One of his memorable adventures in Istanbul in 1950 was to

swim across the Hellespont, as Leander did in mythological times to be with his beloved Hero. In all of

those postings Gerry delighted in exploring the cultural treasures these marvelous countries had to

offer. In 1964, he was asked to establish and head up the International Trade Centre at Expo '67 in

Montreal, the opportunity of a lifetime. Throughout his career Gerry was not inclined to self-promotion,

and preferred to arrive at the right course of action with discretion and modesty. His most cherished

place was the family cottage on the Gatineau River, acquired shortly after the War, where he delighted

in making breakfasts and barbeques for his family and friends, while developing the cottage and

maintaining the boats, canoes and outboard motors. He also cherished his participation in the White

Pine Fishing Club in the Gatineau hills where he worked tirelessly to help maintain the serene beauty of

this remote property. We were very blessed and lucky to have him and he will be greatly missed. Gerry's

funeral will be held privately, but the family will be arranging a memorial gathering to celebrate his life

in the early summer. In lieu of flowers, Gerry would have appreciated that any donations be made to the

Perley & Rideau Veterans' Health Centre in Ottawa, where he was cared for during his last year with love

and respect, endearing himself to many of the wonderful staff.

Charles Kee (Class of'51) The family of Charles S. “Charlie” Kee sadly announce that he “crossed the

final finish line” peacefully, on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Bobby’s Hospice, at the age of 87, after a brief

battle with cancer. Charlie was born on May 21, 1928 in Grand Mere, Quebec, to the late Charles S. and

Annie Mildred (Bustin); daughter of the late Charles L. Bustin, founder of Bustin’s Fine Furniture).

Charlie is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lillian (Starkie), and three children, Charles A. “Chuck” from

Alberta; Cynthia ”Cindy” LeBlanc (Steven) Saint John and Catherine “Cathy” (Donnie O’Brien) Saint John;

three grandchildren, Charlie, Brandon and Destiny, all of Saint John. He is also survived by one sister,

Dorothy Murchie of St. Stephen and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Charlie was

predeceased by two sisters, Frances Forbes and Margaret Dickson. Charlie was an accountant by trade

and worked for GE for nine years before joining Rocca Construction in 1963 and retiring in 1995. He was

an avid sailor, being an Honorary Life Member and past Commodore of the RKYC. He also enjoyed

camping and was a past President of Gloosecap Campers. He was also involved in the NBGS acting as

Robert Kenny (BA'66, BCL'68) Robert Kenny, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to

many, died in Fredericton on Saturday, June 6th, 2015 of complications related to amyotrophic lateral

sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Bob was born on October 19, 1942 in Marysville, NB to Winifred

(Price) Kenny and Irvine Kenny. His wife Joan (Keenan) and his daughters Mary Ellen, Natalie, and

Brigette were his first loves, anchoring a life filled with a passion for family. His grandchildren were the

object of endless grandfatherly pride and affection, and will miss him deeply. Bob’s boundless optimism

infected others, inspired many, and left all those who encountered him better off for their time with

him. Even while facing the insurmountable odds of an incurable disease, he proved that the most

pernicious of afflictions is no match for a vital spirit. This spirit will live on in countless ways, for his was

a life dedicated to building, helping, serving and nurturing. His legacy is underscored by the countless

friends who mourn his passing, a community strengthened by his selfless contributions, and a family

that embodies his love and dedication to fellowship and service. Bob left no one untouched by his

humour, his gift for storytelling, and his modesty. His friendships extended to every corner of society

regardless of age, profession, location or social status. Whether as a baseball coach, a young

professional, a prominent leader, or a woodsman, Bob possessed an uncanny ability to enrich others’

lives and to draw people together. Among Bob’s numerous passions, fly-fishing and the Boston Red Sox

were two interests that particularly nourished his soul and even occasionally repaid the emotion and

energy he invested in them. Bob was ultimately rewarded with three World Series championships, and,

allegedly, a salmon or two. A visit to Fenway Park with Bob was a treat that would reanimate in anyone

a love for the beauty of the game. A trip to any river in New Brunswick with Bob was a lesson in respect

for the delicacy of nature and awe of its beauty. Bob graduated from Fredericton High School, the RCMP

Academy, New Brunswick Teachers’ College and the University of New Brunswick, and was called to the

New Brunswick Bar in 1968. A dedicated lawyer and contributor to the legal profession, he was a deputy

Provincial Court Judge from 1970 to 1972 and served as an adjudicator for the Public Service Labour

Relations Board for the Province of New Brunswick. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1986. A

battler for the “little guy”, Bob pursued justice for his clients in a way that inspired other lawyers and

embodied the principles of the Canadian justice system. Countless Frederictonians and New

Brunswickers have benefited from Bob’s involvement in the community. Some of the organizations with

which he shared his talents include: the YM/YWCA (president); Fredericton North Rotary Club;

Miramichi Salmon Association; Killarney Lake Wildlife Advisory Board; Marysville Heritage Committee;

Fredericton Chamber of Commerce (president); and the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital Foundation. He

also served the United Way, ALS Society, University of New Brunswick, St. Thomas University, the

Fredericton Indoor Pool Committee (co-chair), the 1997 East Coast Music Awards, and the Bid

Committee for the 2003 Fredericton Canada Winter Games. In 2014 St. Thomas University awarded Bob

an honorary doctorate. Other honours included the Paul Harris Fellowship Award; International Year of


Volunteers Award, Government of Canada (2001); Team Membership, Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame

(1992); North Side Recognition Distinction, Nashwaaksis “Y” Men’s Club (1991). In 1999 he was named

the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen of the Year, and in 2013 the City of

Fredericton celebrated Bob by proclaiming Bob Kenny Day, which included a gala performance at The

Playhouse. Bob never sought such honours, preferring instead to direct the spotlight to the causes he

championed. Many people have been led by his example to make their own contributions to helping

others and their community. Moreover, generations of New Brunswick Liberals have been inspired in

their commitment to politics and public service by Bob’s social conscience and his unshakeable belief in

equality and human rights. A man with keen political interests and deep convictions, he maintained

close friendships with people of all political persuasions and offered counsel to leaders in all parties. Bob

was predeceased by his parents and by his only sibling Donald Kenny. In addition to Joan, his wife of 49

years, Bob is survived by his children Mary Ellen Kenny (Fred Headon), Natalie Kenny, and Brigette

Kenny (Marc Antoine Chiasson), and by his grandchildren Ellen Richardson, William and Meredith

Headon, and Claire Chiasson. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Lillian Bibby of Belleville, ON;

Evelyn Catterson (Dr. Alistair Catterson) and Beatrice Ross, all of Ottawa; and Monica Jurosky of Lompoc,

CA, as well as many other members of the Keenan family with which he shared a close and loving

relationship. Bob will be fondly remembered by his Kenny and Price relatives, many of whom share his

love of the Miramichi. Bob’s family wishes to thank the staff of Parkland Shannex in Fredericton for their

excellent care and support. We wish to express our special appreciation and gratitude to Dr. D. Gowan.

Linda Kettela (BA'76) The passing of Linda Barbara Kettela, of Fredericton, NB, occurred peacefully,

surrounded by her family on March 6, 2015 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on

December 6, 1943 in Toronto, ON, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Anne (Eliuk)

Kowalchuk. Linda worked for Service Canada and was affiliated with St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic

Church. She enjoyed reading and time spent with her book club, was a volunteer with VON, Wheels to

Meals and the Boys and Girls Club. Linda is survived by her special friend, Leo Leger; her sons, Paul

Kettela (Angela) of Woodstock, NB and Mike Kettela (Monique) of Miramichi, NB; grandchildren, Taylor

and Jordan and the extended Kettela Family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her

Richard Kierstead (BSc'48, MSc'50) Dr. Richard W. Kierstead of North Caldwell, formerly of Fredericton,

New Brunswick, Canada died on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at the age of 88. He received a BS from the

University of New Brunswick in 1948 and a masters in Science in 1950. He was awarded a Beaverbrook

Overseas Scholarship to the University of London (Imperial College) and received a PhD and DIC in




Organic Chemistry in 1952. Dr. Kierstead carried out postdoctoral studies at the Universities of Toronto,

California and Harvard prior to joining the international pharmaceutical company Hoffman LaRoche in

1956, where he became Director of the Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Synthesis Departments. He

was an author of over 50 scientific publications, a similar number of U.S. Patents, and was an emeritus

member of the American Chemical Society. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Ildiko

Torok, in 1963. He remarried and is survived by his wife, Nellie Visser Kierstead; son Eric and his wife

Carolina of Nashville, TN; daughters Ilona Neville and her husband, James, of Fairfax, VA; Laura Stewart

and her husband, Geoffrey, of Glens Falls, NY, also survived by 2 grandchildren, Jessie and Derek

Stewart. A Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 2nd from 1 to 3 pm at the Paul Ippolito-

Dancy Memorial, 9 Smull Ave, Caldwell, NJ 07006. A private interment will take place in Mt. Hebron

Cemetery in Upper Montclair.

Rudolf Kubela (PhD'71) Scientist, chemist, engineer, mentor and inventor: loving and beloved father,

grandfather and great-grandfather. A man of great strength, intensity, creativity and exceptional

intelligence, Rudi was born in Kosice, Czechoslovakia on January 6, 1934, surviving both the Second

World War and Communism. Arriving in Canada in 1965 and starting from scratch, he built a remarkable

and fulfilling life for himself and his family. With his pure white hair and piercing blue eyes, Rudi was

brilliant, distinguished and larger than life. He was the consummate host, a lover of good wine and one

of the two-percent. He loved life and hated laziness, living and working with passion, fire and unbridled

energy. He fought his illness as he lived - with strength, bravery, courage and humour. Respected,

admired, accomplished, adored and deeply loved, Rudi was a proud and honourable man whom we are

all proud and honoured to know. Survived by his wife Katarina, his children Karol (Edita) and Caroline

(and Mark), loving grandchildren Karolina (and Robert), Tomas, Samuel, Jacob, Charlotte and Katarina.

James Leggett (Class of'61) James Roy "Jim" Leggett died in Saint John Regional Hospital on June 12,

2015. He was the much loved husband of Harriet (Bruun) Leggett, dear father of Karen (Jamie Malizia

dec.), Susan, Sally (Tim Thompson) Leggett and wonderful Bompy to grandchildren Matthew (Athena),

Nicole and Justine Malizia. Born in 1934, he was the son of Maynard and Marjorie (Giggey) Leggett and

is survived by his sister Patricia (Bill dec.) Watts and brother Peter (Carol) Leggett, as well as several

nieces, nephews, great-nieces/nephews and many relatives. He graduated from Saint John High School,

studied at the University of New Brunswick and spent all his working life with Bell Canada, mostly in

Ottawa, including six interesting years in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He retired early to live his dream of

designing and building a house on Hills Point, Charlotte County, NB. He will be greatly missed by his

family, relatives and friends in Canada, USA and Scandinavia. Donations in his memory to the Charlotte

Priscilla MacDonald (Morehouse, BA'69, BEd'70) MacDonald, Priscilla Jean (Morehouse) wife of the

late Douglas MacDonald passed away April 17,2015 at Rocmaura Nursing Home. Born May 15, 1931 in

Zealand, the only daughter of Haskell and Edith (Burtt) Morehouse, she resided in Burtts Corner most of

her life until moving to Shannex Quispamsis in 2010. She was a graduate of Fredericton High School and

Provincial Normal School and then while teaching full time for 33 years, she earned her BA and BEd


degrees from UNB. Her first school was the one-room, eight-grade Jones Forks School and then she

became one of the first teachers of the new Keswick Valley Memorial High School. A member of Saint

Paul's Anglican Church, Zealand and an adherent of the Burtts Corner Church of Christ, Priscilla taught

Sunday School and was a founding member of the "Young" Ladies Sewing Circle. She was a member of

both the local provincial and federal Women's Progressive Conservative Parties, the Women's Institute,

Laubach Literacy, and the Retired Teachers' Association. Priscilla and Doug enjoyed a trip to Europe and

numerous bus trips which took them to all 10 Canadian provinces and all 48 continental States. She

enjoyed baking, knitting, reading, quilting, doing crossword puzzles and doting on her family. She passed

many of these passions on to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Wendy

(Dale) Haines, Quispamsis and Andrea (Joe) Pelham, Hampton; grandchildren, Stephanie (Cam) Stone of

Fonthill, ON, Chris Haines of Moncton, Maddie and Emma Pelham of Hampton; great grandchildren,

Liam and Charlotte Stone of Fonthill; brother, Douglas (Marg) of Sutton, ON; special sisters-in-law, Janet

(Aulden) Jones of Fredericton and Zula (Mac) Morehouse of Burtts Corner; numerous nieces, nephews

and cousins. We wish to recognize Janet and Aulden, cousin Carlene Tranquilla, nieces Lisa & Kellie Jones

and special friend Heather Ripley whose dedication allowed Mum to stay in her own home 6 1/2 years

after Doug passed away. In addition to her dear husband and parents Priscilla was predeceased by her

Vernon Mann (Class of'44) With heavy hearts, the family of Vernon Mann announce his passing on

March 11, 2015 at his Residence. Vernon is survived by his wife Phyllis (Caldwell), daughters Mary and

Alix, son Stephen, daughter-in-law Bonnie (MacCharles), granddaughter Stephanie, grandson Jody and

special niece Jeanie (Magee) Kingston. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Bill and sister-in-law

Edna, along with several nieces, nephews, grand-niece and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his

parents and beloved sister Jean. Vernon was born and raised in Campbellton, New Brunswick near his

beloved Restigouche River. He joined the RCAF during World War II serving as a Flight Lieutenant on

Lancasters – igniting a life long interest in planes. He stayed overseas after the war to aid in the return of

POW’s to England from Europe. On his return to Canada, he enrolled in University then started a 45 year

career with CN Rail, working in Campbellton, Montreal and Moncton. This ignited another lifelong

interest – trains. In 2007, Vernon received his 50 year membership pin in the Masons, and was a

member of the Scottish Rite. As brilliant a man as Vernon was, his passions in life were for the simplest

of things, family, cooking meals for family and friends – his meals were legendary – and waiting to return

for good near his Restigouche River. Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-

1995) in care of arrangements. In keeping with Vernon’s wishes, a private family service will take place

at St George’s Church Chapel with interment in Campbellton later in the spring. In lieu of flowers,

Laird McLennan (BPE'63) Laird Matheson McLennan passed away in Fredericton, NB, on April 30, 2015

after a brief illness. Born in Annapolis Royal, NS, on November 9, 1933, he was the seventh son of the

Rev. Dr. Thomas Ewan McLennan and Helen Mae Lavers McLennan. Laird is survived by his wife, Carole


(Forrest), his brother George (Katherine) and his sisters Jean Storey and Sharon Dewar; his brother in

law, David Forrest (Marlene) and his sisters in law, Margaret McLennan and Barbara McLennan, as well

as a large and extended family of cherished nieces, nephews and cousins, and a wide circle of dear

friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Joan MacLeod, and brothers Philip, Bruce, Charles, John and

the Rev. Donald McLennan. As a child of the manse, Laird moved many times in his early years, from

Stellarton to Charlottetown, Montreal, Truro and Ottawa, and in each new school, made life-long friends

through his competitive participation in team sports. He was an outstanding athlete, and starred on

many championship and all-star teams, excelling in basketball, rugby and baseball. Laird graduated from

West Hill High School in Montreal and Truro Academy. He studied commerce at Mount Allison University

for two years, then worked in Woodstock and Toronto for a several years. Following his passion for

athletics, however, he returned to school and graduated from UNB, with a degree in Physical Education

in 1963, and later from Montana State University in Bozeman with a MSc. in Education. By profession,

Laird was an educator, a high school teacher, guidance counsellor and athletics coach at both the high

school and university level. He commenced his teaching career in Centreville, NB where his men’s high

school basketball team delighted many fans with their competitive championship play throughout the

Province. Over the years, he taught in various schools in New Brunswick and at Sir John Franklin High

School in Yellowknife, NWT. Laird went on to coach college basketball and football at Mount Allison

University, where he was a good friend and mentor to many young men and women over the years. In

retirement Laird remained active in the community and, among other things, was a volunteer at the

DECH for 17 years, serving both at the front desk and the Memory Clinic, and on its Ethics Committee. A

man of many interests, Laird was an avid reader, enjoyed classical music and opera, as well as the Carter

Family from Virginia, and always completed the NY Times Crossword puzzles. A loyal sports fan, he

supported the New York Yankees and the Montreal Canadiens his entire life. Ever the adventurer, Laird

embraced the wilderness, and considered himself fortunate to have explored many isolated areas of the

world, from the South Nahanni in the North West Territories to the Chobe River in Bostwana. He hiked

the rugged highlands of Scotland where he was feted as the “seventh son of the seventh son”, made

many trips through the Rockies in Western Canada and fished the rivers of Montana. Closer to home, he

loved the Saint John River and the beauty of the Tantramar Marshes and Jolicure Lakes of

Westmoreland County every summer. Laird was drawn to the sea, and enjoyed his time at the cottage at

Baie Verte, NB, where he swam several months of the year, rowed his beloved dory, and entertained

many a visiting child with his wonderful repertoire of songs and stories. To those who knew him, Laird

was an extraordinary man who will be lovingly remembered for his wise counsel, his irrepressible sense

of humour and his ever kind and generous nature. A memorial service, with interment to follow, will be

Beverley Mitchell (PhD'76) Sister Beverley Mitchell known also as Sister Mary Ann Beverley was the

only child of George Albert Mitchell and Alma Walker. She was born in Mission City, BC on May 30, 1930.

Beverley died, March 18, 2015 at Hospice in Victoria, BC. Beverley graduated from St. Ann’s Academy,

New Westminster in 1949 and entered the Sisters of St. Ann, Victoria. She pronounced vows on August

6, 1951. Beverley was a talented and creative educator. In her words, her life has been “extraordinarily

interesting and varied.” As a teacher for over eighteen years, she ministered at both the elementary and

secondary levels in Port Alberni, Vancouver, Penticton, Mission City, Victoria and Kamloops. Her studies


brought her to Seattle University (BA), University of Calgary (MA), and University of New Brunswick

(PhD). Her second career began in 1976 as an Associate Professor of Literature at The University of

Alberta in Edmonton. Holding this position for 19 years she taught, counseled students and published

many periodicals. After retirement Beverley committed herself to Community ministry and exercised a

passionate commitment to social justice and environmental issues. Always positive, whether facing

professional or health issues, Bev unites with Margaret Anderson in describing her life, “The blessings I

have wanted were love and music, books and great ideas and beauty of environment. I have had them

all and to a degree beyond my imagining.” Her mother died in 1942. Her father remarried and she is

survived by her half-brother Jim (Anne), niece and nephew Maria and Jimmy, grandnieces Alex and

Katey, grandnephew Nicky, numerous cousins and our own community of the Sisters of St. Ann. Prayers

will be held at 7:00 p.m. on March 25, 2015 at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1803 Quadra Street, Victoria, BC.

The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on March 26, 2015 at Holy Cross Church,

Roy Morrow (Class of'42) A great soul has left us. Just one week shy of his 94th birthday, Dr. Roy

Andrew Morrow passed away peacefully, surrounded by his adoring wife and children. Family and

friends are invited to join in a celebration of his life on Saturday, June 20, at the Pinehurst Member's

Club, from 4 to 7 p.m. Born on June 4, 1921, in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, he was an expert

surgeon, marksman, trapshooter, and skier, and a dedicated golfer and bridge player. In life, he enjoyed

a Budweiser in a thin Pilsner glass, a robust stock market, 18 holes of championship golf, and his family.

Dr. Morrow graduated from the University of New Brunswick and from medical school at Dalhousie

University in Nova Scotia, Canada. In Jersey City, N.J., he completed his residency in surgery at the Jersey

City Medical Center. In 1945, he was a medical officer in the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Rifle

Champion, winning numerous competitions. Then, as he often said, “I made the best decision of my life”

when he married Dolores “Dee” McEntee. The newlyweds moved to Rocky Mount, where he became

chief of surgery at Atlantic Coastline Railroad Hospital. After becoming a member of the American Board

of Surgery, he and his wife moved to Glen Ridge, N.J. Dr. Morrow started a practice in Jersey City in

general and pediatric surgery. He became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an American

citizen in 1952. He served as chief of surgery at Christ Hospital, Greenville Hospital, and Fairmount

Hospital and was a noted teacher and lecturer. After his retirement in 1992, he and Dee moved to a

house on a golf course in Pinehurst, which he considered” my own personal Camelot”. He played golf

with the Foxes, Happy Hackers, and the Dural Group, and was a part of many bridge groups. He is

survived by his wife of 63 years; one brother, Robert; six children, Dr. Robert Morrow and his wife,

Lucille; Joan Morrow Lynch and her husband, Terrence, John Morrow and his wife, Lynne Lampl, William

Morrow, Carol Morrow Andersen and her husband, Mark; Kitty Morrow French and her husband, Jerry;

eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many brothers- and sisters-in-law, and many nephews

and nieces. Boles Funeral Home is assisting the family. Friends and family are invited to join in a

celebration of his remarkable life on June 20.

Erin Murray (BEd'07) Erin Murray of Oromocto (Formerly of Riverview) passed away in the arms of her

loved ones, June 15, 2015. Erin was happily married to the love of her life, Andrew Campbell, and they

have one darling little bean, Wyatt. Erin was the precious daughter of Bill and Irene Murray (Kenna).

Loving sister of Kelita (Kris) Smith and world’s best Auntie to Mattie and Korie Smith. Erin had a zest for

life as a kindergarten teacher touching many young lives. She had a special spot in so many hearts. Her


positive attitude was an inspiration to so many. Erin had a love for basketball for many years playing

both provincial and High School. During her high school years, Erin worked with special needs children

and was involved with the Town of Riverview Camps throughout her summers. As well as spending time

as a camp counsellor with the Tim Horton’s Foundation. She later moved on to University where she

graduated from St. Thomas with a BA and received her B.Ed. from UNB. Erin is survived by caring in laws,

Ethel and Lyle Campbell. She is also survived by many family (Campbell's, Kenna's and Murray's), aunts,

uncles, cousins, and friends. Predeceased by grandparents, Hazel and Raymond Kenna and sister in law,

Myrna Campbell. The family will be receiving friends and relatives at Cobb’s Funeral Home and

Hampton, NB, the husband of Marilyn (Ganong) Nice, announces his passing, which occurred on

son of the late Lincoln and Margaret (MacKenzie) Nice. David taught at Prince Charles School, Saint John

as well as Saint John Vocational School. He was principal of Belleisle Regional High School for 27 years.

He was also very involved with the New Brunswick Teacher’s Association and Federation where he

served on the board for many years. David was a member of the Executive Committee of the N.B.T.A. /

N.B.T.F. for a number of years and also served as Vice-President of the N.B.T.A. David is survived by his

loving wife Marilyn; son Jonathan of AB; daughters Michelle (Brad) Cummings of Hampton and Natacha

Skinner (David Patterson) of Saint John; grandchildren: Jillian Nice of Baxter’s Corner and her mother

Charles Nickerson (BEd'76, MEd'80) The death of Charles Nickerson CD, BEd, MEd, of Fredericton, NB,

occurred on June 1, 2015 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born June 24, 1935, in Cape

Forchu, Yarmouth County, NS, he was the son of the late Robert and Ethel (Amero) Nickerson. Charles is

survived by his cherished wife and best friend, Mary Elizabeth; their loving children, Margie Fox

formerly of Yarmouth, NS. Charles loved the outdoors and being on or by the ocean. His love of hunting,

fishing and sailing were only eclipsed by his love for his family. Charles was a proud member of the

Canadian Military from 1954-1977 and served as a UN Peacekeeper overseas. Charles left the Military to

pursue a teaching career at George St. Junior High School for 20 years. During his life he loved

participating in sports including softball, volleyball, badminton, basketball and archery. His teaching

career included coaching a variety of sports, teams and individuals throughout the years. He was best

known for his coaching of archery athletes including NB Summer Games teams and coached numerous

provincial and national champions. After retirement, Charles continued as a fulltime successful

businessman until his death. Visitation will be held at McAdam's Funeral Home on Thursday, June 4,

2015 from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm. A celebration of life service will be held at McAdam's Funeral

Home on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 2pm with Pastor Jerome MacDonald officiating. A reception will be held

wonderful awful Jokes, Husband, Grandfather, Father, Friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 12

years Carita Nybom, daughters Alice Nimmo (Doug James) & Emma Nimmo, grandchildren Gillian &

Thomas Nimmo-James, and his brothers David Nimmo & Wm. Stewart Nimmo and their families. He was

predeceased by his father, David MacKay Nimmo, his mother Susannah Hayden Nimmo (née Peebles),

his stepmother Mary MacLean Nimmo (née Stewart), and 2 siblings Ann & Alistair, who lived but briefly.

Richard Norrad (BA'56) The passing of Richard “Dick” Wallace Norrad of Fredericton, NB, husband of

the late Corinne (Albert) Norrad, occurred on Sunday, April 5, 2015 at his home. Born on January 30,

1934 in Sussex, NB, he was the son of the late Willard and Helen (Sutherland) Norrad. After graduating

from UNB Geology in 1956, he attended military training with the Black Watch at Camp Aldershot and in

Quebec. He began his long, storied sales career in 1959 with LaHave Equipment of Bridgewater, NS. He

moved to Fredericton in 1964 to become General Manager of the NB Branch. Soon he became President

and continued until the business was sold in 1991. He started his own company along with his son Mike

in the equipment business as President of Norquip Supply Ltd. Dad was an ambitious, and hardworking

individual who at 81, continued to work up until his health no longer allowed it. He held many positions

and memberships with various associations such as; Canadian Mining & Metallurgy, NB, NS, NL & PEI

Roadbuilder Associations, CAED, Maritime Lumber Bureau, NWCTA and others. Business associates

often became life-long friends who he enjoyed spending time with, often dropping by as he was passing

through. Over the years, he and Mom enjoyed every possible opportunity to dance together especially

at the Thomists’ Dances along with their circle of friends. He faced his illness bravely and was

determined to participate in the Quebec International Curling Bonspiel, held this January. There, he was

honoured for 40 consecutive years of attendance with a standing ovation from his peers. He served as

President in 1991 and was key in establishing the Maritimer Bowl Event. Once again, he continued to

make many friends and along with his trusty banjo “Martha”, spent many hours entertaining. Dick and

“Martha” were very well known in Sing-Song Circles from coast to coast. On several occasions he and

other musician friends could be found in front of appreciative audiences such as; The War Brides, Legion

Members, Retirement Home Residents, and even with Royalty. He took great pleasure in playing music

and singing with family and friends and attended the first Norrad Reunion in Boiestown this past

summer. Dad was a wonderful storyteller as well and easily embellished his stories with accents from all

over. Dad enjoyed travelling for work and pleasure, he was fortunate to see much of the world, from

Japan to Newfoundland to England. After Mom’s passing, he accepted a friend’s offer to visit him in

Austria. He revelled in the beauty of the Danube and the pleasure of hearing Strauss in a historic concert

hall. Dad will be missed by many. Dick is survived by his children, Carol Salmon, Mike Norrad and Janet

Ramey (Jerry MacMillan) all of Fredericton and Mia Richelle (Brian) of Halifax, NS; grandchildren, Dylan

and Adam Ramey, Drew Salmon, Ben Norrad, Erin and Colin Richelle; sisters, Judy Huggard of Saint John,

Barbara Pepperdene (BA'59) April 1, 1937 - April 1, 2015. Dr. Barbara Pepperdene passed away

peacefully at home with her daughter and two of her nieces surrounding her. Dr. Pepperdene, proud

mother to Angela Pepperdene, Halifax and Glen Pepperdene (Brittnee), Richibucto; doting grandmother

to Zachary, Arianna, Makaila and Chloe; younger sister to Joyce O' Dell and Richard (Dick) Pepperdene

(Jean); and beloved aunt to several nieces and nephews. Dr. Pepperdene was predeceased by her

siblings Kenneth, Katharine and David Pepperdene. Dr. Pepperdene received her Doctorate as a theorist

in Occupational Sociology, and the majority of her teaching career was at the University of New

John Poirier (BBA'59) 1935 – 2015. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jean-Marie

“John” Poirier on May 6, 2015. He leaves his loving wife of fifty-five years Marie Rita Arsenault, his

children Nicole (Richard Baird), Daniel (Monique Halpin), Marc (Djalia Nikuze) and Michel (Véronique

Morinville), and adoring grandchildren Bianca, Zachary, Maxime, Erica, Mathieu, Christian, Nicolas,

Kiara, and Zöe. He also leaves his brothers Yvon, Patrick, Joe and his sister Elizabeth. Jean-Marie, a

Frank Price (BScEE'47) Passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 21st, 2015. Aged 89, he died

surrounded by family after a long life and brief illness. Frank was born in Moncton, N.B., the eldest of

three children. Predeceased by his parents Lt. Col. Frank Leroy Price (OBE) and Maitland Elizabeth Price

(nee Miller) and sister Elizabeth Moore (Donald). He is survived by his wife, Patricia (nee Ryan); his sister

Barbara Hawkins (Roger); his children, Ted Price (Julia), Cynthia Price, Deborah Holmes (Jeff), Trish

Blanchard (Randy) and Barbara Filice (John); his grandchildren, Liam Price (Susan McKay), Courtney Firlit

(Brian), Michael Filice, and Katelyn Filice; and his great-grandchildren, Claire and Paige Firlit. A native of

New Brunswick. Frank lived most of his life in southern Ontario. Frank was a member of the Canadian

Parachute Corps in World War II and the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals thereafter. He graduated from

the University of New Brunswick in 1947 in Electrical Engineering. He moved to Ontario and pursued a

career that included Ontario Hydro, Inglis, GSW and an energy consulting business that he founded and

led. Frank was a long time member of the Oakville Golf Club. Later in life, art became his passion and he

left a legacy of his work. He will be sorely missed. Thanks to the dedicated staff at Trillium Hospital and

Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) for such compassionate care. A celebration of Frank's life

Marlaine Roberts (BEd'82) Surrounded by her loving family, Marlaine Margaret Roberts, 55, died

peacefully in her home on Saturday, June 13, 2015 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Born and raised in

Dalhousie Junction, New Brunswick, Marlaine moved to Fredericton to attend the University of New

Brunswick where she received her Bachelor of Education in 1982. She took great pride in teaching and

spent most of her career as a facilitator at the University of New Brunswick’s English Language

Programme. She had a passion for theatre and ballroom dancing; performing in several Theatre

Fredericton productions and spending weekends taking ballroom dance classes. She was an active

member of the Holy Family Parish where she served on the Pastoral Council as Religion Education

Coordinator for numerous years. Marlaine’s life was centered around her family. She drew her loved

ones together through her joy of cooking and entertaining and ensured all occasions and achievements

were celebrated. She valued her family above all else and instilled in her children the importance of

staying connected. She is survived by her husband, Nicholas Guitard, daughter Sarah (Raju) of Hong

Eileen Ryan (BA'77, LLB'82) M. Eileen Ryan was born on January 8, 1955 in Saint John, New Brunswick

and died on April 20, 2015 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The daughter of the late Honourable Justice

Henry E. Ryan and M. Catherine (Boyle) Ryan, she is survived by her husband, the Honourable Justice

Terrence J. Morrison, sons David (Halifax) and Gregory (Montreal) and several sisters and brothers.

Sincere gratitude is extended to her sisters Ellen (Richard F. Sullivan), Mary Alice (Donald A. MacLeod)

and Elizabeth (John K. F. Irving) for their loving care, support and devotion. Eileen is also survived by

her brother-in-law, Blaine (Joanne) Morrison, close nieces and nephews, great-nephews, several cousins

and many good friends. She was predeceased by her parents, her in-laws, the late Angus James

Morrison and Mary Lorraine (Clark) Morrison, and brother-in-law, Donald M. Morrison. Eileen was a

special niece to the late Honourable Justice William F. Ryan. Eileen received her elementary and

secondary schooling in Saint John. She was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick where she

received her Bachelor of Arts (Political Science and Anthropology) in 1977, Carleton University, where

she was granted a Masters of Public Administration in 1979 and the Faculty of Law, University of New

Brunswick, where she received her LLB in 1982. Admitted to the Law Society of New Brunswick in 1983,

Eileen had been a practicing member of the society for 32 years. She served on the Council of the Law

Society on two separate occasions and served as a member of the Competence Committee from 2009

until her death. She was also a member of the Canadian Bar Association where she was active in the

Administrative Law Sub-Committee of the New Brunswick Branch. Eileen grew up in the company of

lawyers with her grandfather William M. Ryan, K.C., M.P., father, mother, uncle and husband, all

respected members of the New Brunswick law fraternity. Eileen specialized in labour and employment

law and worked as a Labour Relations Officer and Legal Counsel with the New Brunswick Nurses Union

for 32 years, proudly representing nurses in labour and administrative proceedings. Eileen also

contributed to legal education for over 20 years as a lecturer at the University of New Brunswick for the

Faculty of Law and the Departments of Political Science and Business Administration. Active in the

community, Eileen had been especially committed to St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church where she served as

Chair of the Parish Council and a member of the Finance Committee. At the former St. Dunstan’s

School, she was President of the Home and School Association and served on the Parent School



Committee. She was a dedicated blood donor for the Canadian Red Cross throughout her life and was

active in the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Eileen was very proud of her two sons and took a keen

interest in the lives of her close nieces and nephews. Education and scholarship were very important to

Eileen. She was an avid reader who enjoyed an eclectic and varied range of reading materials. Eileen,

Terry, David and Gregory greatly appreciate the support and kindnesses of family and friends, especially

the many notes, letters and gifts received. They are especially grateful for the support of Father Bill

Brennan and Father Gerry White. The family would also like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the

Carolyn Savoy (BPE'69) It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Carolyn

Savoy of Halifax, N.S. (originally Saint John, N.B.). Carolyn started her coaching and teaching careers at

St. Francis Xavier University, where she stayed for seven years before landing at Dalhousie University.

The Tigers women’s basketball coach from 1977 to 2009, Carolyn was an associate professor in the

School of Health and Human Performance before retiring in 2011. In addition to her coaching and

teaching duties, she was a University Senator for Health Professions (2000-2002), President of the

Dalhousie Faculty Association (1999-2000) and Chair of the Healthy Dalhousie Committee (1998-1999).

She was also a member of the Dalhousie Faculty Association negotiating team and media spokesperson

during the strike in 2002. A graduate of the University of New Brunswick in 1969, Carolyn received her

Masters of Education from Boston College in 1972; a Certificate in Public Administration from Dalhousie

in 1986; and a PhD in Sport Psychology from the University of Tennessee in 1992. Carolyn’s passion and

commitment to the sport of basketball reached far beyond her time with the Tigers. She was the sport

psychologist of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team when they won the NCAA

Championship in 1991. A former president of Basketball Nova Scotia, she was the technical chair for the

Pan American wheel chair games in 1982. A member of Canada Basketball’s Board of Directors from

1981 to 1987, she was the chair of the National Coaching School for Women in 1988. A master course

conductor and Canada Basketball level 4 coach, Carolyn was the head coach of Nova Scotia’s Canada

Games women’s basketball team in 2001 and was an assistant coach with Canada’s junior national team

in 1979. Along the way, Carolyn received many accolades. She was inducted into the Saint John New

Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 2003, the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 2012 and will be inducted

into the Dalhousie Tigers Sport Hall of Fame this coming May. She received the Progress Club Women of

Excellence Award, the Basketball Nova Scotia Frank Baldwin Award and the Dalhousie University Sandy

Young Award in 2010. Carolyn was a five-time AUAA/AUS coach of the year while leading her Tigers to

11 conference wins and five AUAA/AUS championship titles. She is the winningest women’s basketball

coach in CIAU/CIS history with 858. Carolyn published many articles as well as her book The Art of

Coaching (2005). Carolyn was passionate about her family, coaching, basketball, the promotion of

women in leadership, sports psychology, education, mentoring and healthy living. Left to grieve are her


best friend and husband, Dave Robertson, stepdaughters Laurie Ann Underhill (Terry) and Jan Coulombe

(Marc); grandchildren Cameron Underhill and Ella and Zackary Coulombe; nephews Arthur Savoy

(Rhonda) and Andy Savoy (Denise); great-niece Gabrielle and great-nephew Cade Savoy as well as

cousins, many dear friends and former student-athletes. Carolyn was predeceased by her parents Val

and Doris (Purdy) Savoy, brother Hedley, and niece Elizabeth. Carolyn will be remembered for her

determination, courage, positive attitude, leadership, and sense of humour to all who knew her as a

coach, a mentor and a cherished friend. Her mantra was to "talk the talk and walk the walk". She

believed in fighting for what's important to you, and she did just that, right until the end of her journey.

It was her request that in lieu of flowers, all donations be made to the Dr. Carolyn Savoy Award of

Excellence Scholarship Fund at Dalhousie University. A memorial celebration honouring Carolyn will be

held at a later date.

Howard Smith (BSc'64) SMITH, Dr. Howard A. - Professor emeritus of educational psychology at

Queen's University, Kingston, died peacefully on Friday, April 24 at Kingston General Hospital of

complications from pancreatic cancer. He was 71. Dr. Smith is known internationally for his numerous

publications on nonverbal communication in teaching, human learning, and the semiotics of education.

Two seminal texts, Psychosemiotics (2001) and Teaching Adolescents: Educational Psychology as a

Science of Signs (2007) exemplify Dr. Smith's major theoretical and practical contributions to his field.

Dr. Smith was born on May 7, 1943, in Ottawa. He grew up in Beebe, Quebec, with an early education in

Fitch Bay, Beebe, and Stanstead. After completing a Bachelor of Science degree (University of New

Brunswick) and a Diploma in Education (McGill University) he became a teacher of mathematics and

science at Montreal's Baron Byng high school, but he soon embarked on doctoral studies (University of

Toronto). He was a loving family man and from 1971 to 2008 Dr. Smith distinguished himself as a

scholar, mentor, and committed teacher at the Faculty of Education, Queen's University. His motto,

from Charles Sanders Peirce was: "Do not block the way of inquiry." In 2003, Howard's sister, Nancy

Niemi, gave her brother a kidney; this gift permitted 12 years of high quality living, so that in retirement

Howard could travel, maintain his academic interests, and a love of photography; to the very end he

remained highly active outdoors. He found joy managing the wooded lakefront property in South

Frontenac Township that he shared with Karin and Nicolas from 2001 until his untimely passing. He is

sadly missed by his wife, Karin Steiner, and her son, Nicolas Bell; his two children: Lara Smith (Brian

Brown) of Sydenham and Dan Smith (Ophelia) of Brampton; his grandsons Ryan and Kyle of Brampton,

who learned to fish at grandpa's side, and his step-grandsons Brenden and Jarod Brown. Howard will

also be missed by his sister Nancy of Panama, his brother Rodney of Kingston, his step-brother John B.

Wilson of Kingston, cousins, nephews and nieces in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, British

Columbia, and Florida. Family, friends, and extended family in Canada, China, Israel, Japan, Switzerland,

and the USA all pay tribute to Howard's life: he was gentle, kind, a superb listener, and he valued quality

over quantity in every sphere. A celebration of life will be held at the Donald Gordon Conference Centre,

Queen's University, on June 28, 2015 from 2-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The

Bob was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick class of 1943 and one of the founding

members of Ure and Smith Engineers and Surveyors, as well as secretary treasurer for Vance,

Needles, Bergendolf and Smith. Past president of Woodstock Engineering and Consultants and

Association of Ontario Land Surveyors. Bob is a past chairman and member Emeritus,

Woodstock General Hospital Board of Trustees and Officer of the Most Venerable Order of the

Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. During WWII Bob served as an officer in the R.C.E.. Over the

years, he enjoyed his time being a volunteer driver for cancer patients, driving them to and

from therapy, and always loved to watch a good game of baseball, play a round of golf, or

spend some relaxing time fishing. He and Doris were able to take several cruises and trips

taking in the scenes anywhere from Europe to Hawaii. A memorial service to celebrate Bob's

Ruth Spicer (Class of'48) It is with sadness, but tremendous love and gratitude for her life, that we

announce the passing of Catherine Ruth Spicer on March 13, 2015. Left to mourn are her children, Linda

Spicer MacFawn MacDonald and John Spicer (Anne), both of Calgary, and her grandchildren, Jen Spicer

of Panama and Matthew MacDonald of Calgary. She was predeceased by her parents, G. Edison and

Catherine M. (Cameron) Cumming of Fredericton, her brother, Dr. L. M. (Bud) Cumming, and her former

husband, Stanley T. Spicer. She was educated at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton and, in

1975, completed her degree in Canadian Studies at Glendon College, York University, Toronto, ON. From

her beginnings in Joggins, NS, to the culmination of her life in Charlotte County, NB, she developed a

wealth of close friendships and network of colleagues throughout Canada, through her many personal

interests, volunteer commitments and her work. As an author, curator, historian and speaker, her deep

appreciation for, and love of, history was acknowledged when she was a recipient of the Award of Merit

from the Association Museums NB. She became a particular authority on Charlotte, York and Sunbury

Counties in NB, and Pictou County in NS, and generously shared her research and knowledge with all

who shared this interest. Additionally, the largest resource of pre-1950 Canadian cookbooks in NB is the

Ruth Spicer Cookbook Collection at King's Landing Historical Settlement. A broad range personal

interests and volunteer commitments were reflected in her participation in numerous groups -- from

church and youth groups, to the arts, to a gourmet cooking club to ensuring the building of a public

swimming pool in Queen's Square in Fredericton, and many, many more. She contributed much to the

communities in which she lived and worked, and will be missed by all who knew her. A memorial service

will be held in early summer at the Wesley United Church in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, NB. In lieu of

Marianna Stack (BT'75, BA'76, MEd83-SJ) The death of Marianna Lorraine Stack, ONB, of Saint John

occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Monday, April 6, 2015. Born in Saint John on May 14,

1941, Marianna was the only child of the late Francis Parnell and Mary Alberta (Case) Stack. A graduate

of Saint John High School, Marianna obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Teaching, a Bachelor’s degree in

Arts and a Master’s degree in Education from the University of New Brunswick. She taught at

elementary schools in School District 8 for over 35 years. She was a supervisor of teachers for the former

School District 20 and for the last ten years of her career was the vice-principal of M. Gerald Teed School

in Saint John, retiring in 1997. Marianna was the co-founder of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Saint John, an

organization which helps to improve the lives of marginalized and criminalized women in New

Brunswick. She served in many capacities with this organization including as its President. She was also

involved with the Atlantic Region of Elizabeth Fry Societies and served on the Board of the Canadian

Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies. Marianna frequently visited and assisted women at the Saint John

Regional Correction Centre, the Madawaska Regional Correction Centre and the Nova Institution for

Women in Truro, Nova Scotia. For her passion for equality and justice and for her devotion and

dedication to the marginalized and criminalized women of New Brunswick and beyond, Marianna was a

recipient of the Order of New Brunswick in 2008 and of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in

2012. Marianna developed a number of programs through the Elizabeth Fry Society including the

innovative Mother/Child Read-Aloud Program conducted at provincial and federal prisons. This program

provides books for incarcerated mothers to read to their children on tape, after which the book, tape

and a cassette player are sent to the child. She was a co-ordinator of the Christmas Gift Program, which

allows incarcerated women to send gifts to their children at Christmas time. She was the founder of the

Anti- Shoplifting Program conducted for Grade 5 students in Saint John area schools. In 2010 Marianna,

on behalf of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Saint John, accepted the New Brunswick Human Rights Award

which recognized the dedicated volunteers of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Saint John for assisting

accused women to get legal aid and advice, for acting as mentors and for helping to preserve the

relationships of women inmates with their children. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Anglican

Church, Rothesay. Marianna represented the Anglican Ecclesiastical Province of Canada on the Canadian

Anglican Cursillo Secretariat and was a lay director of the Cursillo Community in the Diocese of

Fredericton. She was an avid reader, enjoyed her garden, her pets and travelling with her cousin, Helen

(Honey) Case. Marianna is survived by her two loving daughters, Deirdre L. Wade, Q.C. (C. Paul W.

Smith) of Rothesay and Janice M. Stockall (the Rev. Canon Kevin Stockall) of Fredericton, very special

friends, Denise Durette and Roy Carson both of Saint John, her grandchildren, Elizabeth Stockall of

Fredericton, Catherine Stockall of Sackville and Charles (Chip) Smith of Rothesay and several cousins.

Jean Stickles (BN'95) The passing of Jean Pawnee Anne Stickles, of Lower St. Mary’s, NB, wife of Dale

Stickles, occurred on Thursday, May 14, 2015. Born on December 17, 1942 in Grand Manan, NB, she was

a daughter of the late Irene (Kinghorn) McKinnon. Jean was an RN in the Emergency Dept at DECRH and

taught at UNB and also taught LPN programs. She was past secretary of NB Wildlife Federation,

Secretary of Fredericton Area Artist Society, the only Atlantic Director of Cairn Terrier Club and was a

her son, Rod Chapleau (Karen) of Fredericton, NB; her grandchildren, Danielle Andersen (Matt),

Courtney Skinner (Chris), Andrew Barr, Allie Drew, Brittany Munn (Matt), Matthew Kitchen (Kate), Justin

Chapleau and Michael Chapleau; seven great grandchildren; sister, Carol Burtt (Lawrence) of Miramichi,

Claude Taylor (DCL'80) Chairman Emeritus, Air Canada. (1925–2015). It is with great sadness that the

family of Claude Taylor announces his quiet passing in Montreal on April 23rd, 2015, one month shy of

his ninetieth birthday. A proud Canadian, whose roots go back to Salisbury, NB, Claude was the younger

child of Martin Luther Taylor and Essie Troop Taylor. In 1947, he married Frances Watters, and she, his

loving wife of 66 years, died in November of 2013. Claude is survived by his brother Fred (Marjorie) and

family in Salisbury, and by his children Peter (Karen Quinn) and Karen, both of Beaconsfield, QC. Dad

was the very proud Papa of Austin, Adam (Tania Costa), Riley, Kimberly (Neil McMahon), Scott, and

Shaun, and Great-Papa of Isabella, Shayla, Hayden, and Hartlyn. In 1949, in Moncton, NB, Claude joined

the fledgling Trans-Canada Airlines as a reservations clerk in the Traffic Division, remaining with the

company and rising to become President and CEO of Air Canada in 1976, then Chairman in 1984. He

remained with Air Canada, in Executive and Board positions, through the late 1990s—a career spanning

nearly fifty years in the airline and aviation industry. In 1986, Claude was made an Officer of the Order

of Canada for having turned Air Canada into a world leader in air transportation and for his leadership of

professional organizations at home and abroad. He received honorary degrees from the University of

New Brunswick, McMaster University, and Concordia University. Claude’s outstanding leadership and

dedication to the foundation of the Canadian airline industry had a profound influence on its

development. He was proud of the part he played in Parliament’s approval of the 1977 Air Canada Act,

which transformed Air Canada from a subsidiary of Canadian National Railways (CNR) to a Crown

Corporation in its own right. He then led Air Canada’s privatization, with its stock first being offered on

the public market in 1988. In 1985, Claude Taylor was inducted into Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame, in

recognition of the impact of his efforts, which significantly changed the face of Canadian aviation.

Internationally, he led the effort to restructure IATA in the 1980s, serving a term as its Chairman. Claude

Taylor also offered his considerable skills and business acumen to the community-at-large, chairing

campaigns for Centraide and the Canadian Centre for Cultural Renewal and serving as Honorary Chair of

the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference and as Chair of the Board of Governors of

Concordia University. He received the McGill Management Achievement Award, the C.D. Howe Award,

and the Canadian Operations Research Society Award. Claude is a Commander of the Order of St. John

and was named the second Chairman of HRH, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Canadian Commonwealth Study

Conferences. Among his many other pursuits was involvement with the Boy Scouts: He proudly accepted

the Silver Wolf Award and he attended many Canadian and World Jamborees. Always concerned about

the welfare of others, he donated his time and resources to the Salvation Army, Concordia University,

and the recently opened McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). As a loving husband and father,

devoted to his family and church, he would jet back from the other side of the world to attend school

Christmas concerts and family events. A great baseball fan, he held seasons’ tickets to his beloved Expos

and attended many games with his granddaughter, Kimmy. A proud Papa, he would walk the sidelines of

his grandsons’ Lakeshore football or baseball games, rain or shine. His Christian faith and his Christian

community, Val Royal Baptist Church, were his rock and foundation. A founding member of the Church,

he was both a life Deacon and occasional caretaker of Val Royal Baptist, attending weekly services up to

and including the week before his death. He found great joy and comfort in the Gospel message and in

his many friends in the congregation. Claude Taylor lived and breathed Air Canada. He was immensely

proud of the Air Canada family and the accomplishments of its people. Whether on an aircraft, or

walking through an airport, maintenance base, or a department at HQ, he spoke with—and more

important—listened to, all, asking personally for people’s input and taking their advice to heart.

Christmas Day would not start at home until after he called Air Canada staff working on Christmas

morning at the airport and elsewhere, to wish them and their families a Merry Christmas. The family

would like to thank the third-floor staff at the Sunrise Residence (DDO) for their loving care of Dad over

this past year since Mom’s passing. Grateful thanks also to Reverend Elliott van Egmond and the

congregation of Val Royal Baptist Church for their support. A funeral service, for family members and

close friends, will be held at Val Royal Baptist Church, 11800 O'Brien Blvd. Montreal, H4J 1Y8, on

Monday, May 4th at 11am. At Dad’s request, there will be no advance visitation. The family would like

Pixie Trip (BA'70) It is with great sadness the family of Pixie Laurine Wilson van Vierssen Trip of

Brockville, Ontario and formerly of Fair Vale (Rothesay), New Brunswick announces her passing on May

10, 2015. Pixie was born on May 23, 1949 in Saint John, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of Gladys

and the late Laurin Wilson. Pixie is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Pieter and her daughter

Nyssa at home, her mother Gladys Wilson (Rothesay, NB), brother Ken (Pat) Wilson (Rothesay, NB),

nephew Chris Wilson (Ottawa, Ontario), niece Jill (Mike) Bone and their infant daughter Audrey

(Rothesay, NB), Several aunts, uncles and many cousins. Pixie was predeceased by her father (Laurin)

and infant sister Janetta. Pixie recently retired from work she very much enjoyed with the United

Counties of Leeds and Grenville as manager of housing regeneration. Prior to working with the United

Counties she worked for a number of years with Horner's Pharmacuital in Montreal and then for many

years with her husband in his private medical practice. Pixie was a very special person always giving and

thinking of others, she will always be remembered for her love to entertain family and friends in her

home. Always giving for the enjoyment of others, she so loved being with her family and was especially

proud of the accomplishments of her daughter Nyssa. Friends may call at the Irvine Funeral Home and

John Wall (BSc'45) John Wall of Calgary passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the age of 90 years.

John was raised in St. Stephen, NB and completed a B.Sc. in Geology at UNB. John's career began with

Imperial Oil just prior to the Leduc oil discovery. While there he continued his education earning his

M.Sc. at U of A. John later completed his PH.D at the University of Missouri in 1958. He then worked as a

respected research geologist, first at the Alberta Research Council then the Geological Survey of Canada.

Although he officially retired in 1992, he continued working with emeritus status and then as a

volunteer for as long as his health would permit. John is survived by his son James. He was predeceased

by his beloved wife of 53 years, Margery on July 23, 2014. He was also predeceased by his sister, Marian

and brother Gilbert. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720

Centre Street North) on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen's

Emerson Wilby (BA'70, LLB'73) A. Emerson Wilby died suddenly by accident on June 21, 2015 in

Harold Rodney Wilson (BT'70, BEd'85) It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of

Harold Rodney “Rod” Wilson of Fredericton, NB on Monday, March 30, 2015, after a long and

courageous battle with heart and kidney disease. Rod will be profoundly missed by his wife of 56 years,

Judith Marilyn Wilson (nee Lowe), and sons, Rodney Arthur and Derek Alexander (Patricia Small). He was

a deeply caring and much loved grandfather to Jackson, Marcus and Jarrod; brother to Edith (Harold,

deceased), Charlie (Ruth), Ronald (Pat) and Lewis (Joan). Rod is sadly missed and fondly remembered by

a host of nieces and nephews and their families as well as sisters-in-law, Linda Lowe and Sharon Fowler;

brother-in-law, Eugene Fowler, and loyal family friend, Tracey Dale. He was predeceased by his parents,

Harry E. and Daisy P. Wilson; as well as brothers, Vance (Kathleen) and Leslie (Jean); sisters, Floris

(Bryon) Saunders and Shirley (James O.) Brooks; in-laws, Arthur and Thelma Lowe of St. Stephen, NB. He

was educated in Fredericton High School, New Brunswick Teachers’ College and the University of New

Brunswick, Rod was a lifelong teacher who spent more than fifty years in the public schools of New

Brunswick. He loved his profession and the children he taught and up until his death he never failed to

note the school buses as they passed his home both morning and afternoon. He was what might be

called a reluctant retiree. Rod was honoured as Canadian Teacher of the Year in the Year of the Child, an

honour he held close to his heart. While he was passionate about his profession, Rod had an abiding

love of sports and was an active coach for fifty two years, when he finally retired at age 68. He was a

Level III baseball coach, a Course Conductor and Master Course Conductor in the National Coaching

Certification Program, a coach with the Canadian Junior Baseball Team, a scout for the Toronto Blue Jays

including the years of their World Series Championships, a four time Coach of the Year in the New

Brunswick Senior Baseball League, recipient of the Moosehead Sports Award, Sports New Brunswick’s

Coach of the Year (1989), and coach of the 2006 Canadian Senior Baseball Champion Moncton Mets.

Rod is and honoured member of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame (1988), Baseball New Brunswick

Hall of Fame (2000), and the Moncton Sports Wall of Fame (2008). Rod helped to bring championships

to numerous teams including the St. Stephen Spartans, St. Stephen Sabres, St. Stephen Rotary Wheels,

Fredericton Royals and Moncton Mets. Rod was honoured by the Town of St. Stephen on August 10,

1988, by having the local baseball diamond named “The H. Rod Wilson Ball field”. Rod’s greatest joy in

life was watching his two sons and three grandsons enjoy sports which he and his wife Judy loved so

much. In particular, he was extremely proud of coaching Rod and Derek and the Moncton Mets to the

National Senior Baseball Championships in Brandon, Manitoba in August of 2006. That was a real family

affair. Also Rod and grandson Jackson spent many wonderful hours together on the ball fields in the

community. Rod was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and playing

with the little puppy Jordie. Family meant everything to “Bee” or “The Silver Fox” as he was

affectionately known. Rod was a devout member of the St. Stephen Presbyterian Church and served as

Elder for many years prior to moving back to Fredericton. He will be remembered for his love of life and

family, his generosity and determination with which he fought his many health issues, thus earning the

title from his doctors, “one tough old bird”. His only purpose in life was to serve others. At Rod’s request


there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has already taken place. In remembrance, Rod’s

family would encourage and appreciate donations be made to the Minor Baseball Associations in your

Donald Yeamans (BScCE'64) It is with great sadness that the family of Donald C. Yeamans of

Fredericton, NB, wishes to announce his passing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on February 19,

2015. He was 79 years old. He was predeceased by father Roy Yeamans and mother Martha (Langin)

Yeamans; beloved wife Judith (Flewelling) Yeamans; and brother George T. Yeamans. Born in Minto in

1935, Donald attended Minto Memorial High School and then enrolled at Mount Allison University in

Sackville, NB. He received a Diploma in Engineering from Mount Allison University in 1957 and went on

to earn a B.Sc in Civil Engineering from the University of New Brunswick in 1964. He proceeded to

embark upon a distinguished career in the field of civil engineering, working for firms such as: ADI Ltd;

NB Coal Ltd; Boyd-Touchie Engineering Consultants; Public Works Canada; NB Power; and the City of

Miramichi. He specialized in municipal water/waste-water projects, but also contributed to numerous

highway and bridge construction projects, marine infrastructure, mining operations and energy

generation and distribution systems. He was awarded a lifetime membership by the Association of

Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick (APEGNB). His work for the City of Miramichi

culminated in the creation of an innovative project in sewage treatment that was internationally

recognized and made him a co-recipient of the Engineering Award of Merit by the APEGNB in 1999.

Always willing to help out and serve his community, Donald coached minor hockey; supported the Boy

Scouts of Canada; was an active member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church and was a passionate advocate

for wild salmon and the Miramichi Salmon Association. He was a long standing and proud member of

the Thistle Fishing Club, Miramichi. He is survived by sons, Jamie Yeamans (Carrie Culligan Yeamans) of

Fredericton and Robert Yeamans (Tannys Laughren) of Sudbury, Ontario; grandchildren, Max Laughren

of Alberta, Harrison Yeamans of Sudbury, Ontario, and Abigail Yeamans of Fredericton. Donald is

survived by a sister, Geraldine Chase of Grand Lake; brothers, Kendall Yeamans (Barbara Prince) of

Fredericton and Daniel Yeamans (Elaine) of New Castle Creek; and sisters-in-law, Isabel Yeamans of

Fredericton, Janet Jay, Orilea Martell (Zale) both of Vancouver, BC, Lorna Flewelling of Fredericton; as

well as several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home on Monday,

February 23rd, 2015 from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. The funeral service will be held at the Holy Trinity

Anglican Church in Nasonworth on Tuesday, February 24th, 2015 at 11am. Rev. Canon Bruce McKenna

Rj Zimmer (ME'13) Rj "Zim" Zimmer (ME.GGE ’13), 63, passed away on April 21, 2015, in Helena. He left

this world with the same courage, fearlessness and grace with which he lived his life. Zim’s life began on

April 16, 1952, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and his hometown was Acton, Massachusetts, near Boston.

After high school, Zim’s sense of curiosity and adventure led him to explore the country, hitchhiking the

Pacific Northwest and Canada several times. Zim eventually settled in Corvallis, Oregon, where he raised

his two children. In 1977, he began land surveying in Oregon and building a career that focused on

Geographic Information Systems (GIS). He received many awards and accolades for his accomplishments

and innovative thinking. During his time working in Corvallis, he helped transform and modernize



mapping for the local county government. In the late '90s, Zim moved to Montana, where he

participated in the Helena and regional community, including proudly serving as city-county GIS

manager and volunteering his GIS and mapping services to the local fire districts. In 2012, Zim earned a

Master of Geomatics Engineering degree from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New

Brunswick. This was a longtime dream and one of his proudest accomplishments. He also had a Bachelor

of Science degree in engineering physics from Oregon State University in Corvallis. He shared his

extensive knowledge and experience with others by — presenting at professional conferences and

teaching in both Oregon and at Carroll College in Helena. Zim was an accomplished and respected

author. His articles were published in American Surveyor magazine, Surveying and Land Information

Systems (SALIS) journal, and Professional Surveyor magazine. His book, “GIS for Surveyors: A Land

Surveyor’s Introduction to Geographic Information Systems,” was published in 2013 and has been

recognized as an authoritative resource for professionals in the field. His love of the natural world

informed both his professional life and his many passions and interests. Zim found peace and harmony

in nature; he loved to spend time hiking mountains and camping in the woods. He was a strong

advocate for the protection of wildlife and land conservation. He valued a healthy lifestyle, enjoying

fitness and a variety of sports. Zim expressed his creative spirit through guitar playing, composing music

and photography. He will be remembered and carried in the hearts of those who knew him. May he find

Jennifer MacNeill (BEd'91, D-AUS'96-FR, Med'00-FR) The death of Charlotte Jennifer (Webster)

MacNeill occurred unexpectedly, in hospital in Halifax, on May 17, 2015 at the age of 63. Jennifer was

fiercely and shamelessly proud to be the wife of Brian MacNeill, mother of Adam (Nicole) MacNeill and

Lindy (Jonathan) VanAmburg, grandmother of Lauren, Abigail, Carter, Nathaniel and Lucas, daughter of

the late Jean and Bryon Webster, sister of Leigh (Shirley) Webster, Gerry (Marylee) Webster, Helen

(William) Wienand, and Ian (Nancy) Webster, sister-in-law to David (Maureen) MacNeill, Sandra

MacNeill and Jimmy MacNeill, aunt and friend to many. Jennifer used her Masters in early childhood

education for many years at Saint John-the-Baptist-King Edward school and had recently begun enjoying

her retirement. She was an active member of St. Mark’s United Church and loved time with her sewing

group. She was dynamic and full of life right to the end and loved a good laugh or story, especially about

her family and friends. She worked hard to make sure her family could always be proud of her and loved

with the Saint John Regional Hospital in the neurology department, where she was well respected and

loved by her peers and patients. Leah was an adventurous and free spirited young woman who loved to

travel and enjoyed many outdoor activities with her family and friends. She was married to the love of

her life, and her greatest joy was her cherished son Dylan who was her guiding light as she battled

cancer. She was a very special sister and loving aunt. Leah will be deeply missed by everyone and
