Newsle er for the alumni, families and friends of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School

The need for a purpose-built room for Science was identified during the WASC/WCEA accreditation process in 2001. It was determined that a purpose-built center would allow for a more activity- based science program that would further interest and motivate the students. Therefore, it was a major role of the School Board in 2001/2002 to determine the feasibility of adding a Science Center to the Mount Carmel facility. The School Board recommended that the Science Center be located by the rear entrance to the Parish Center, close to the current Computer Lab. The Parish Council

gave their support of the building plan that would allow for a classroom accommodating 19 students without the loss of any of the current parking space. The building will be a pre-fabricated structure that will be stuccoed and roofed to blend in with the present building. Regardless of the constraints of the classroom the children continue to enjoy an exciting Science program at Mount Carmel. Last year’s Kindergarten program concluded with another successful Science Night. Students welcomed (continued on page 3)

New Science Center for Mount Carmel School

As the Today’s Students T o m o r r o w s L e a d e r s campaign reaches the end of its third year, we can appreciate its positive impact on the students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School. Due to the generosity of parishioners throughout the Archdiocese, additional funds are now available for scholarships and at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, we have seen an 40% increase in the tuition assistance awarded to our families in the 2001/2002 school year. The parish goal for the Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Leaders campaign set by the Archdiocese was $144,878.00. This money was realized early in the campaign and monies p l e d g e d i n e x c e s s , $329,284.00 are already being realized. The $67,402.00 received to date is h e l p i n g o u r s c h o o l ’ s

Endowment Fund grow. As a result, we are able to utilize the interest from the funds earlier than anticipated. This news is particularly welcome in the current economic climate. In the 2002/2003 school year, $50,000 will be available to families with a financial need. These funds help ensure that a Catholic education is still available to parish families. This year we anticipate helping 63 students, just over 20% of our student population, enjoy a faith-filled education at Mount Carmel School. To those who have completed their commitment to the Today's Students campaign we offer our sincere thanks. To those who have been hesitant to continue payments, we hope that this information will show how much your gift can help the children of Mount Carmel. To those who are experiencing the financial concerns of many in our community, we offer our prayers, our support and our thanks for the gifts that you have felt able to make. Together we can make a difference in the lives of our children. Teresa Anthony Principal

(continued from page 1) their families and became the teachers for the evening. With the support of volunteers from the Stanford doctoral Physics program and NASA, they were able to show their new-found knowledge. They could board the simulated Space Station, participate in a paper airplane derby or race around a magnetic track—all in the name of science. For the Junior High students the year ended with their Exposition Day. 7th grade students presented their science projects while 8th g r a d e r s g a v e p h y s i c s demonstrations for parents and students. 6th grade students also used this opportunity to display their language arts projects on authors. This year, as we build on last year’s

successes, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students will participate in the Jason XIV Project, from Sea to Shore, researching the ecosystem of our coast, including San Francisco Bay.

For the 6th graders this will include a visit to the Marine Science Center. Grades 2 and 3 will nurture their silk worms from chrysalis to flight. They are able pick the mulberry leaves from the trees just outside the classrooms on Grand Street. Meanwhile the 1st grade will be watching their ladybirds grow. Imagine how much more they could do in the new Science Center! As we move through the approval and building stages we look forward to sharing the progress with you. This time next year we expect to have a purpose-built facility for all our science needs. If you would like more information about the Center or would like to see the detailed plans, please contact Julia Tollafield at 650-366-8817 or at [email protected].

Viola Albertoli Gomes, ’41, writes: “I can’t believe that it has been 61 years since I graduated from Mount Carmel School. Last year I went to the luncheon for us oldies, it was fantastic to meet with classmates; I hope that they do it again this year. I was so proud of my granddaughter; she graduated with honors from Notre Dame, Belmont June 1st, 2002. Patrick Kelly, '50, and Leona Thompson Kelly, class of '54, have been married for 42 years, with two children and five grandchildren. They spend a great deal of time in the summer and fall on their ranch in Wyoming. They love the great outdoors and entertaining many of their friends from California

during the hunting season. Winters are spent back in San Jose, CA where they are on the golf course a lot. Catherine Nix Keenan, ‘61, recently remarried. Her new husband is Robert Keenan, a musician. She is active with Phoenix Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Phoenix Zoo. She has four grown children and four grandchildren, all living nearby. She is enjoying God’s blessings! Megan Duncan Shanahan, ’79, would love to hear from old classmates in her area, El Dorado Hills. She and her husband, Tim, have two boys, Daniel age 10, and Chris, age 7.

Joe Washington, ’80, is currently the Coordinating Producer for Fox Sports Net (Cable Channel 40). He married Mary Garvey in July 1999 and they have a son, JT III. They live in San Lorenzo but have lots of opportunities to return to Redwood City to see the rest of the family; Mary, ’76, Pat, ’87, and Steve, ’88. Tessa Crompton, ‘00, recently achieved Outstanding results in the Word Masters Challenge, a national competition for high school students requiring close reading and analysis of many different kinds of prose and poetry. Tessa attends Notre Dame High School, Belmont. Tessa also joined Victoria Siekierski, ‘99, as an inductee into the National Honor Society.

Our sincerest apologies to Regina Plath Scutero and her family for our error in showing

her as a deceased member of the class of 1952 in the June issue of

the In Touch newsletter. We understand that this error has

caused much distress to her and her family and friends.

Class of 1951 Return to Mount Carmel We continue to welcome our alumni back to Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, either when they drop by or for their class reunions. The Class of 1951 met for a luncheon and tour of the school in June. A group of 20 graduates together with their spouses attended the event spearheaded by Rita Vogl Morton. A wonderful display of photographs and memorabilia added to their day and brought back many happy memories.
