contemporary and attractive manner", said Esche. The result was a four-minute film, which took the audience into the fascinating world of virtual reality. A 360 degree view, which first shows a Norwegian fiord, then a large LNG powered ferry and finally the production of the corresponding valves at HEROSE. A film which communicates the central HEROSE message to the audience: that nature and modern shipping are compatible – thanks to LNG.

Six cameras in action

The video was produced in Norway in August. The opening scene on the 600 metre high Preikestoolen, a steeply inclined rock platform high above the Lysefjord is particularly impressive. Michael Rösser from the production company Black Peach Media GmbH: "Even if you view the film through VR glasses, you need to have a head for heights, because this technology really gives a true impression of reality". To make 360 degree films, six action cameras installed in a special mount film their surroundings. Just like a person sees the scene if they look up, down, to the left or right, or behind them. This may sound simple, but it is definitely not. Rösser: "You have to work extremely precisely at the editing stage." This also includes the sound. Rösser: "Depending

on the position of your head, the direction of the source of sound also changes in reality."

The film made a decisive contribution to achieving the main objective of the exhibition: further increasing familiarity with the brand. Dirk Zschalich, Managing Director of HEROSE: "We addressed an unexpectedly large number of potential new customers." For example a Canadian shipyard owner, who is planning future new tugboats with LNG powered engines and was looking for professional suppliers in Hamburg.

Throughout the world, shipping is a highly conservative industry – right down to the gold buttons of the shipowners. Changes are only accepted reluctantly. However, the maritime sector is now facing changes. These are due to increasingly stringent environmental protection regulations and the demand for economical use of resources. Most of the global shipping fleet is still equipped with engines which are fuelled with heavy fuel oil, which emits sulphur, soot and pollutants into the atmosphere without filtration (vc has reported about this several times). The SMM, which was visited by more than 50,000 specialist guests now showed the course of further developments – towards green propulsion. For the very first time, an entire hall was dedicated to this subject, Hall 5, in which HEROSE also had a stand.

As well as LNG – whose market alone is forecast to grow by 8 percent annually up to 2022 – other alternative types of fuel were discussed at the exhibition, from methanol up to liquid hydrogen.

HEROSE is the leading global producer of LNG valve. Not only for shipping. A further spectacular order has just been booked in China: HEROSE is supplying more than 1000 valves for the expansion of an LNG storage station in Hefei, a metropolis with 5 million inhabitants in the east of the country. The company from Bad Oldesloe has already produced the valves for the first phase of construction. "Because they were very satisfied with our quality and service, the developer also chose us this time", says HEROSE Managing Director Dirk Zschalich. The expansion of the facility will come on stream in the second half of 2017, by which time the storage capacity will have been extended by 200 cubic metres.

Hungary Sewage treatment plants speed upAccelerated sewage treatment with oxygen HEROSE valves control the process

From the outside, sewage treatment plants appear to operate at a leisurely pace. Nothing much seems to happen in the large clarification tanks. However, this impression is misleading. The physical, chemical and biological processes for purifying the sewage take place literally below the surface. There, the speed of the process is what is important. The faster the purification takes place, the more efficient the plant. Biological purification can be greatly accelerated by the deliberate addition of oxygen. In Hungary, they have had good experience with this and have avoided costly investments.

Over the past decade, sewage treatment in Hungary has undergone strong development. In the course of becoming a member of the EU in 2004, the infrastructure was brought up to European standards and modernised in many parts of the country. At the same time, the requirements have greatly changed. Hungarians are now use their drinking water much more sparingly – since the early 1990s consumption has reduced by a quarter, from about 125 litres to 95 litres per person. Accordingly, the quantity of waste water has reduced, but its relative contamination with hazardous substances has increased considerably. As well as this, sewage treatment plants are often faced with large fluctuations of utilisation. Varying quantities of waste water, often with large concentrations of hazardous substances have to be properly treated and stringent limiting values have to be met. Expansion of capacity by the use of conventional

technology is elaborate and expensive. A cheaper alternative is to speed up the purification process. The partial oxygen ventilation (PSB) developed by Messer increases the efficiency of existing plants with a small investment. Instead of air, the process inserts pure oxygen into the aeration tanks to increase the activity of the aerobic bacteria and therefore greatly accelerate the biological degradation processes. This also applies for the important bacterial oxidation of ammonia to nitrate (nitrification). HEROSE valves have been used in the Messer tanks for many years.

Fine-bubble ventilation

The aeration hoses, injectors and oxidisers which are used in the PSB process can be precisely tailored to the parameters of the sewage treatment plant. “The selection of the system or a combination of systems essentially depends on the application and local conditions”, says András Paszera, environmental technology specialist at Messner. Important parameters are for example the tank geometry of the availability and cost of the electrical power which is required.

Thick walled hoses with a large number of fine pores or a pump Venturi injector feed the oxygen into the aeration tank, where it is distributed in the form of fine bubbles. This enables an especially large oxygen supply with a correspondingly high efficiency, as well as precise dosage according to the particular requirements. “Partial oxygen ventilation is especially

suitable for industrial operations with large fluctuations in utilisation and for sewage treatment plants with campaign operation”, explains András Paszera. “With this, it is no longer necessary to reserve large capital-intensive tank volumes – physical capacity is replaced by biological efficiency.”

Partial oxygen ventilation

The PSB process can be used in a wide range of industries, for example in the chemical, leather, textile, food, paper and cellulose industries, as well as in communal sewage treatment plants.

Friedrich See GmbH: An exemplary agentThe workshop truck with the HEROSE logo is in great demand by customers

With the workshop truck, f. l.: Managing Director Ritzel, his deputy Christine Weingärtner and HEROSE Area Sales Manager Erlenkamp

Customers really appreciate this service: For more than a year, the HEROSE service partner Friedrich See from Biebergemünd in Hesse has used a workshop truck to reduce plant down times to a minimum by means of local calls. Managing Director Andreas Ritzel: "The truck is equipped with a blasting machine, a compressor, a lapping machine and a test bed, so that we can test and repair safety valves on site." Friedrich See has more than 20

years experience in consultation, sales and service of safety valves. Its customers come from various industrial sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, foods, construction materials, oil and gas. The workshop has a separate room for valves with high demands on cleanlines to be free of oil and grease. In addition to repairs and supply, See also offers other services. Managing Director Ritzel: "This includes registration of the safety

valves which are installed in a system, production of a maintenance strategy and optimisation of the maintenance intervals." Klaus Erlenkamp, HEROSE Area Sales Manager: "We are proud that our logo and our valves are pictured on the workshop truck – and that since June the company is under contract not just as a workshop, but also as a service partner."

Night Owls Tour

As every year, on 8 September the Night Owls Tour to local schools was held in Bad Oldesloe. Here, students

have the opportunity to get to know local companies and to get a taste of training occupations. HEROSE was the only company which guided two groups of 30 participants through the Production department, where the CNC machines and assembly were explained by HEROSE apprentices.

BiZ by Night

HEROSE also celebrated a premier at the "BiZ by Night" which was held for the 8th time on 20 September in the rooms of the Job Centre. On the company stand, HEROSE apprentices answered questions about training in the company. HR Manager Lucka: "There was very great interest in our offers and I am exceedingly satisfied with the participation."

Every year there are less school leavers – they belong to the low birth rate generation. Companies such as HEROSE are finding it increasingly difficult to find suitable candidates for apprenticeships. HEROSE Director Dirk Zschalich: "In the coming years we are aiming for further growth with our safety valves and valves for industrial gases, especially for the new natural gas propulsion for ships. Well trained specialists are essential for this in administration and production, because more than 75 percent of our orders are for export." Because of this, HEROSE participated in two campaigns with local schools and the Job Centre in 2016.

It rarely happens, but still sometimes does: a power failure in the entire area of the town and standstill everywhere. When this happens it is good to have an emergency generator.

HEROSE has now installed an compact diesel generator with a power of 160 kVA/127 kW on its premises. In an emergency it will supply the three IT server rooms and the offices with power. To bridge the switch-over time of a maximum of 14 seconds, additional batteries are available for the servers.

Maass will remain in the restructured Sales department. "I will be taking over an executive function in the newly structured Area Sales Management", announced Maass.

Constant growth over the past years has made the need for a restructuring of the Sales department increasingly urgent. This will be catered for with Uwe Balle at its head. "To achieve the ambitious sales targets which we have defined in our Vision 2022, our structure must be oriented to the future." In addition to restructuring, this also includes expansion of the global sales network and intensification of our own activities.

"I greatly respect Volker Maass’s decision to withdraw from the overall Sales Management for personal reasons", said HEROSE Managing Director Dirk Zschalich: "I am very pleased that he will also support us with his experience in the future. At the same time I am glad that we have found a qualified successor in Dr. Balle at such short notice."

This year, two young men started their training at HEROSE: Martin Dering and Florian Besch. vc visited them at their workplaces.

This summer, Florian Besch took his vocational diploma examination with

specialisation in Mechanical Engineering. On 1 August the 20-year-old started a four and a half year apprenticeship at HEROSE as part of a dual course of study – as a cutting machine operator and as a mechanical engineer. As with all HEROSE apprentices in this field, during the first months of his training, Florian had to build a diesel locomotive exactly according to plans "because this provides the basis for all methods of metalwork."

Martin Dering is two years older than Florian. After leaving secondary school he qualified as a retail salesman. After this he took a vocational diploma at the Bad Oldesloe vocational college in the subjects of commercial assistance and foreign languages. Since 1 September, Martin is being trained as an industrial administrator.
