Dear Friends

A month of World Cup fever! From the little I have watched of the goings on in Brazil (I‘m not a soccer fan) I re-affirm my belief that South Africa put on a fantastic show four years ago. I don’t have to worry about not watching soccer there is an enormous amount of sport on at the moment – fortunately my interest, rugby, doesn’t often conflict with my wife’s love of tennis. But whichever which way, the TV is being well used!

Sitting on the Stoep

In 1914 on the Cornish coast above the little fishing village of Mevagissy stood a manor house belonging to a family of landowners called Tremayne. The large double storey house and stables stood in a wonderful garden, a magic garden sheltered by a forest of trees from the south-west gales and with sheltering hills and valleys on the east. A wonderful garden full of exotic plants collected from all over the world by successive Tremaynes in the 1800s. There were gardens within gardens complete with walls, hedges, lawns and paths and rides; there was an Italian garden with formal pool and classical surrounds; there were grottos with an Alpine garden on the other side; there were beehives in a stone wall for honey, hot houses growing pineapples, grapevines under glass with peaches, melons and more; huge kitchen gardens supplying the home’s every need; even their own water supply and grazing! They must have lived lavishly in an independent self-supporting system.

- And then the Great War came and the economy which could support so many of the great houses quickly changed.

- And quite quickly the gardens contracted, the gardeners vanished (went to the war and didn’t come back).

- The house above remained but was later sub-divided into flatlets.

- Everything became neglected and overgrown and, like a fairy story disappeared leaving only an impenetrable jungle, a tangled mass of fallen trees, gigantic rhododendrons forty feet high, dank and dark.

What it needed was a prince charming to come to the rescue!

And come he did! Unlikely as it might seem the prince charming was Tim Smit, a Dutch born English Archaeologist married to an English lass, who had settled in Cornwall after ten years as a successful composer and record producer.

The gardens of Heligan had been asleep for over seventy years but Tim and his colleague, a builder John Nelson, fell headlong in love with the ghost they unearthed! One was a musician/producer the other builder, neither of them gardeners – at least not at first!

They had to cut and slash their way in that first day in 1990 – the introduction to Tim’s book is ‘The Green Shroud’.

Heligan had twenty-two gardeners at its zenith so revealing this ‘lost’ garden was a mammoth task but what they found was magical and the restoration is nothing less than splendid.

We visited ‘The Lost Gardens of Heligan’ many years ago on the advice of the then Chairman of the Nature Association, David Wigley, and blessed him for this wonderful visit. The gardens are quite beautiful with paths and plantings and summer house, all and everything restored; and vegetables and fruit planted, so fully productive …. And its ongoing, “…exploring old working methods and

approaches to horticulture to discover where we can make a contribution to improving modern practices.” (You should also taste the Scrumpy they serve you!!)

There’s a message here – large estates and their garden have become only distant possibilities in today’s world and it is good to preserve those precious remnants which we still have. But what we still do have are opportunities; we can work together to create our own special gardens, preserve the wonderful bounties of nature, beautifully summed up in four lines from Dorothy Frances Gurney’s poem, ‘God’s Garden’

“The kiss of the sun for pardon,The song of the birds for mirth,One is nearer God's Heart in a gardenThan anywhere else on Earth.”

Birds, Beasties, Trees, Updates and Important Things

Have you all listened to the appeal for a Secretary for the Nature Association? It is such a worthwhile group of volunteers who do sterling work so join them!

Nature’s True Colours

It must be the cold weather that has kept those young artists indoors and busy with their creative work. Well done to Josephine, aged 8, for winning the colouring competition.

Crackerjack

“The story of the Lost Gardens of Heligan is an incredible, romantic, true-life adventure driven by a magnificent obsession to uncover the secrets that lay at the heart of one of the most mysterious estates in Europe”

Quote from the back cover of ‘The Lost Gardens of Heligan” written by Tim Smit in 1997(revised in 1999)

Not a poem nor a rhyme but maybe a reason why the past can point to a better future for us all. These precepts can apply to any one person, to any community no matter how large or small; different circumstances maybe but gardens always lift our spirits and are so special.

I know we are very lucky!

Chairman's Note

DHA Chairman: Costa Spheris

Proposed K56 MeetingThe general discussion at a public meeting about the proposed K56 road centred around the issue of natural integrity versus human development. The meeting took place at night and addressed the specific section of the K56 road which, if approved, will link William Nicol Drive to Main Road cutting through Kyalami.

continue on page 10

Some members of the Kyalami community and the Greater Kyalami Conservancy (Gecko) are not happy about the current proposed alignment of the road as they believe the road will cut through sensitive wetlands and possibly fragment the movement corridors of the area which is known for its equestrian community.

Chairman's Notecontinued from page 8

The meeting which was held at Gracepoint Church in Glenferness opened with an address by Lizelle Gregory of Bokamoso Environment Consultants about developments on the scoping report and the environmental impact assessment (EIA) which will soon take place. Bokamoso is working with both their own wetland specialist and Paul Fairall, a wetland specialist who has done extensive research in this area.

The meeting also featured an address by a representative from the Gauteng Department of Transport (Gautrans) who explained the history of the proposed road and how it will fit into the bigger picture of project road networks in Gauteng. The representative asked members of the community to be mindful that the road was for everybody and that the building of a road all depended on the areas in which development is going to take place.

A director of WSP Civil and Structural engineers, which has been commissioned to explore the various alternative

alignments of the road, also made an address to the community. He explained why the alternatives were not options and also explained that this section of the road was being prioritised as it could serve as a stand-alone link.

There were very emotional reactions from community members. One implored the road engineers to visit the dams which the road will intersect to see the wildlife and experience the tranquillity which will be broken by the dual carriageway road while other community members including a local politician called the road “another Nkandla highway”.

The EIA for the Kyalami section of the K56 will soon commence and public participation will be needed to assess just how much of a social and environmental impact the road will have on the Kyalami community.

Auction Sales

Property MattersAll your property related questions answered

When a home owner is in substantial arrears on his bond repayments, the bank will take the necessary legal steps to serve the owner with a summons, take judgment and eventually attach the property. If the owner cannot pay the arrears the bank will instruct the sheriff of the court to sell the property at a public auction (also referred to as a sheriffs auction).

The bank is entitled to attend the sale and buy back the property if the bidding at the sale is of amounts that could pose a significant loss to the bank. A property becomes a Property in Possession (PIP) when the bank buys the property back at a sale in execution (public auction).

Such properties are sold voetstoots and without suspensive conditions. In other words, as long as they are conducted in compliance with the CPA, auctions are exempt from the statutory consumer protection regulations.

Certain factors to consider:

Buyers need to register before the auction and pay a refundable deposit; If your bid is successful you will have to pay a deposit normally equal to 10% of the purchase price as well as the sheriffs commission; The balance of the purchase price must be guaranteed within 14 to 30 days; The purchaser is responsible for outstanding rates and/or levies; The purchaser is normally responsible for the eviction of any occupiers.

Risk passes to the buyer at the fall of the hammer, so insurance will be necessary, to avoid damage.

Advantages of buying a property on auction:

No lengthy negotiation periods. The Seller is not just simply testing the market. In terms of an auction agreement, the seller is contractually obligated to transfer the property to the highest bidder in an absolute auction, and to the highest bidder that meets or exceeds the reserve price in an auction with reserve.

Tips for buyers: Assess if there are any maintenance problems. Check if the seller owes any money to the council for rates and taxes and service charges. Make sure that you know what all the extra costs are. Ask the auctioneer to see the contract that you will be required to sign. All auctions now fall under the jurisdiction of the department of trade and industry and are subject to the comprehensive and far-reaching regulations imposed on auctioneers and many others by the Financial Intelligence Centre Act, the National Credit Act and the Consumer Protection Act.

How do I Decorate my Foyer? The best decorating tips for entryways and foyers.Because first are impressions always so important, I've always believed that the foyer is one of the most vital design elements in one's home. It acts (and not just metaphorically) as the portal between you and the world outside your door. Thus, I find it incredibly important to create something very specific when I'm designing one for any of my clients.

1. The LightingI like using either a pendant fixture or a table lamp — but always on a dimmer. It also means that you never walk into a completely darkened house.

2. The SurfaceI think every entryway needs a flat surface as part of its design. It's just the simple mechanics of needing a place to drop the incoming mail, your sunglasses, etc. Keep your keys and wallet on a small chinoiserie chest in your foyer so that you always know where they are. Being able to shed some of the trappings of the outside world immediately upon entering your home is important.

3. The MirrorOnce you've passed through your entryway, you are out there in the 'big bad world.' I think it's smart to have one last opportunity to make sure everything is in order, so have a mirror right by your front door.

4. The SeatingDepending on available space, I love placing a small chair as part of the entryway. It's just a place to slip shoes on

or off or a place to drop off a shopping bag right inside the door.

5. The FlowersAs with every other part of one's home, it's always nice to be greeted with fresh blossoms, so save a little corner of the surface for a small arrangement.

6. The DesignThis is the space that greets us when we re-enter our homes, thus, I love using an entryway as a simple appetiser for the feast of design taking place further in the home.

7. The Jewel-BoxOften these entryways and foyers can be somewhat small, so it's a great place to really 'swing for the fences' when deciding on the design of the space. Personally, I love using a vibrant wall covering, a bold paint colour, or an interesting furniture piece in the foyers that we design. Here are a few things on my

mental checklist as we begin work on a new entryway:

Interior Painting Projects take Centre Stage during Winter

The dreary days of winter – oftentimes they leave many of us restless for change, particularly when it comes to our home’s interior where we spend so much of our time during the colder months. So, if you’re already tired of staring at four neutral-coloured walls, you might want to consider a new coat of interior paint. Painting is the fastest, easiest and least expensive way to change the look and feel of your home. And, with the bold palette of colours available today, there is no better time than the present to pick up the roller and get to work.

Paint Ideas

the right colour was the biggest challenge when shopping for interior paint. There are so many beautiful choices available these days, you may end up feeling like you don’t know where to start!

The following tips, are designed to help ease the worry and confusion about selecting an appropriate colour palette for your needs:

How does colour affect a room’s size?Generally, strong, warm colours like reds, oranges and yellows tend to draw walls in and make a room feel cosier. These colours are known as advancing colours because they jump out and meet the eye. Conversely, receding colours like blue, green and violet tend to make a room look larger because they ‘stand back’ visually. These are not hard and fast rules however; strong colours such as royal blue and hunter green will make the walls more dominant, and thus closer. Small rooms are best made to appear larger by painting them white or a light neutral colour. Additionally, monochromatic colour schemes will open up a room, while contrasting colours can make the room dynamic but smaller.

But, choosing paint colour can be one of the most challenging aspects of decorating your home. In fact, a recent poll found that 28% of consumers said choosing

Page 13: IN FOCUS - Dainfern · - 2 - - 3 - July 2014 • 132nd Issue IN FOCUS Official Publication of the Dainfern Nature Association Since 2002 PUBLISHING & ADVERTISING to place an advert

Paint Ideascontinued from page 22

What is the best way to decide which colour is best for my room?

There are many tools available these days to help consumers choose paint colour, one of which is the colour chip. Colour chips have undergone a substantial makeover in the last few years, as many of them are now much larger and therefore more useful.

What colour should I paint my ceiling?

Ceiling colour is purely a personal preference. Typically, white or off-white colours are used to help create the illusion of having a higher ceiling and more open space. Medium to dark colours will create the illusion of a lower ceiling and a more intimate space. To unify the room, choose a colour for the ceiling that is a tint of the wall colour.

Should trim work or mouldings be painted the same colour as the walls, or should they be printed lighter or darker than the wall colour?

To disguise ordinary or unattractive trim work, or to create a monochromatic look, use a trim colour that is the same colour as the walls. If you want to accentuate trim work, use a different colour (lighter or darker) than the walls.

Will the paint I chose look lighter or darker on the wall?

Over a larger surface area, most colours appear darker. It’s a good idea to choose colours a shade or two lighter than what you want. Clean, bright colours can appear either lighter or darker depending on the surrounding colours and lighting in the room.

I’ve painted my room, and the colour is much bolder than I expected. Is there anything I can do to soften the colour?

You can apply a lighter or more muted colour over the original base coat using a technique such as sponging, rag rolling, or colour washing. This will visually "break up" the bolder colour and soften the look of your room.

Finally, Decorating should be fun, so try to relax and enjoy the process, as well as the end-result.

Mimetes hirtus

Flower of the Month

(L.) Salisb. ex Knight

Sima Eliovson, author of Proteas for Pleasure, referred to Mimetes hirtus as 'the most magnificent species of Mimetes, the most spectacular genus of the protea family'. Nevertheless, the future of the species is uncertain as it is also one of the most geographically restricted mimetes, growing only in boggy areas mainly at low altitudes. As a consequence of the latter, it is often out-competed for its preferred habitat by housing developments. Fortunately it is one of the less troublesome to grow in cultivation-an aspect that may aid its chance of survival as a species.

Description Mimetes hirtus is a single-stemmed, erect, much-branched shrub, 1.0-2.5 m in height with smooth, reddish bark. The branches possess numerous upwardly overlapping, lanceolate leaves, 25-45 x 5-18mm, that hide the stem almost completely. The leaves and stem are covered in tiny hairs, and the leaf edges are ciliate.

The headlets or groups of flowers are borne in the axils of the uppermost foliage leaves of a flowering branch. There are nine to fourteen flowers in the headlet; each of these being surrounded by bright yellow, tube-shaped bracts with red tips, from which the 50-55 mm long red styles, needle-shaped pollen presenter and fluffy white

perianth extend. This composition is known as a 'brush type pseudanthium' and is the least specialised of the flower types of Mimetes. The inconspicuous green leaf that subtends the flower does not change shape or colour during the flowering period (as is the case in the more advanced mimetes flower types). The tips of the flowering branches are crowned by a flattened crest of soft, rusty brown leaves without flowers in their axils, hence the common name, pineapple bush.Flowering takes place mainly in winter, in July - August, although it can occur anytime between May - November.M. hirtus is a relatively short-lived member of the protea family. It grows rapidly as a result, and may start flowering after only two years of growth. Plants reach their peak by ten years of age and die shortly thereafter, at a maximum age of about fifteen years. Fruits are generally ripe within five months following pollination, a rate faster than other species in the genus.

Conservation Status The species is well conserved at the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve that forms part of the Table Mountain National Park, and in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.

Family: Proteaceae (protea family)Common names: marsh pagoda, red and yellow bottlebrush, tall pagoda, hairy mimetes, pineapple bush (Eng.); kreupelboom, vleistompie, rooistompie, pynappelstompie (Afr.)

The population in the Kleinmond Nature Reserve requires monitoring as it may be at risk from the effects of eutrophication. It has been assigned a lower Red Data List status than many of the other species in the genus, but Rourke (1982) considers it to be the most seriously threatened. Strict criteria give it a status of Vulnerable owing mainly to its low-lying areas of occurrence that often clash with urbanization and agricultural development (orchards and pastures). It cannot be termed Endangered as most of its habitat loss occurred over three generations ago. Other major threats include alien invasive plants, wetland drainage and groundwater extraction as well as golf courses, afforestation and eutrophication. Since it is sought after as a cut flower, wild flower harvesting is an added threat. Alien invasive ants pose a problem, as they do not aid seed dispersal, a process in which indigenous ants play a vital role in Mimetes.

Propagation and cultivationThe plants can be propagated from seeds, although given that these are difficult to acquire, propagation by means of cuttings is the preferred method. Cuttings should be either stem tip cuttings or side shoots taken as heel cuttings. The latter are cuttings taken where a side shoot or short twig is pulled off the main stem in such a way that part of the main stem comes off along with the cutting, hereby giving the appearance of a heel.

The cutting material must be 100-120mm long, approximately as thick as a pencil, and should be young but not too soft. Apply the 'little finger test' i.e. material should resist when one attempts to bend it with one's little finger. A good time to take cuttings is February/March when the new shoots have emerged and hardened off but before buds have formed for winter flowers. The cuttings must be kept cool after harvesting and it is advisable to keep them in a refrigerator for up to two days before setting. Cuttings must be treated with a rooting hormone prior to setting in a rooting medium of 50:50 milled pine bark with polystyrene for drainage and placement in well-aerated mist units with heating under the trays. It is essential that they are kept damp in the mist unit. Mimetes hirtus is not too difficult to root providing the correct methods are followed. Rooting may start after six weeks but can take up to three or four months.

In the event of callous formation but no roots, remove the cutting, damage the callous, and reapply rooting hormone. Place the cutting in a clean rooting medium and rooting should take place soon thereafter. Once the cuttings have rooted, they should be hardened off for three weeks, then planted into suitable containers. The planted cuttings should be kept wet at all times.

The planting medium should consist of sands with a high humic and low nutrient content. This can be attained by using black soil (when available) to which a small amount of peat (maximum 20%) can be added. Do not add compost to the soil. Add mulch on top of the planting soil in the container. Alternatively, a sandy fynbos mix can be created using acid river sand and composted pine bark or pine needles in equal parts.

Feed the plants every six weeks with ammonium sulphate and magnesium sulphate by dissolving three to four heaped teaspoons of each in 10 litres water and give each plant a cupful at a time. This will ensure a good balance of growth between roots and leaves. Water them regularly (at this stage they do not need their feet wet all the time but must not be allowed to dry out) and prune them after flowering; pruning will result in a fuller bush and hence more flowering shoots in the next season (Adriaan Hanekom and Anthony Hitchcock pers. comm.).

African OlivePigeonColumba arquatrix

By André Marx

Bird of the Month

This attractive pigeon has fared remarkably well in the greater Johannesburg region in recent times and is now found in most well wooded suburbs in the city. From being a bird only being found in certain localities in the city where there was dense vegetation it is now a garden bird in areas like Dainfern.

Undoubtedly it would have been less common when the estate was established 20 years ago! As we have planted more and more trees and shrubs that provide the food that this species thrives on so it has spread into new areas. Today it is commonly found on the estate and breeds regularly.

The African Olive Pigeon, or Rameron Pigeon as it is also known, is a widespread African species that is mostly maroon in colour, with heavy white spotting in parts. The

neck is grey with patches of yellow around the eye and the bill and feet are bright yellow. As such it has a distinctive plumage that is quite different to other local pigeons and doves. The call is a loud coo coo.

When breeding the bird will build a large stick nest that can be placed quite high in a tree and usually lays one and occasionally two eggs which hatch in 17-20 days, with the chick fledging in another 20 days or so. The bird feeds mainly on fruit and berries primarily picked in the canopy, although it will descend to the ground to feed as well.

At times birds can form flocks, particularly when moving between feeding areas when they can fly considerable distances, and when roosting on a favoured tree at dusk.

This superb species is being seen more and more regularly in Dainfern and is here to stay as long as there are good areas of woodland.

Recycling

Why Is Recycling Important? What is recycling?

Recycling is the process of separating, collecting and remanufacturing or converting used or waste products into new materials. The recycling process involves a series of steps to produce new products.

Importance of RecyclingRecycling is important in today’s world if we want to leave this planet for our future generations. It is good for the environment, since we are making new products from the old products which are of no use to us. Recycling begins at home. If you are not throwing away any of your old product and instead utilizing it for something new then you are actually recycling. When you think of recycling you should really think about the whole idea; reduce, reuse and recycle. We’ve been careless up to this point with the way we’ve treated the Earth and it’s time to change; not just the way we do things but the way we think.

Recycling benefits• To Make Environment Clean• Conservation of Materials• To Save Energy• Reduce Garbage in Landfills

As mentioned above recycling is good for the environment, in the sense; we are using old and waste products which are of no use and then converting them back to same new products. Since we are saving resources and are sending less rubbish to the landfills, it helps in reducing air and water pollution. Energy saving is important if we are to

reduce the future effects of global warming. If we recycle one aluminium can, we are able to save enough energy to run a TV for around 3 hours. This will obviously depend on the energy consumption of your TV, but it gives you a great idea as to just how much energy can be saved during the process of recycling products.

Dainfern is lucky enough to have two recycling options for its residents as follows:

We urge all residents to make an effort to recycle?!

Option 2

Ronnie's Paper Recycling (Free) - The Mondi Paper Company has the Ronnie's Orange Bag System on the Estate whereby all paper waste may be collected and placed in the Orange Bag for collection on a Tuesday. If you are starting off with the Ronnie Bag paper recycling option, place all your paper waste - securely tied, so that we don't have it blowing all over the Estate, and place a brick on top of the pile. Ronnie's Paper Pick Up will pick up the paper and leave you with an orange bag for future paper recycling.

Option 1

Mama She's Recycling - is a paid recycling option for residents. A small monthly fee of R45.00 plus a once off registration fee of R100.00 is payable. Residents will then receive 10 free blue bags per month and all recyclable materials are to be placed in these blue bags. Recyclable materials include metal, glass, paper and plastic.

Obtain a complete list of recyclables from Laura at [email protected].

Leave your blue bags out on a Wednesday morning for collection by Mama She's. The DHA have 10 x blue bags available for purchase at reception for R10.00 should you require extra bags during the course of the month.

Tree of the Month

Terminalia sericea is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree which grows up to 9 m, but individual trees can reach 23 m in height.

DescriptionTerminalia sericea has reddish-brown branches. The leaves are crowded at the ends of branches, narrowly obovate-elliptic with smooth margins, blue-green above, paler below, densely covered in silvery hairs. It flowers mostly in September–January. The flowers are in axillary spikes and are pale yellow to creamy white. The fruit is an oval nut surrounded by a flat wing. The fruits are often parasitised and form deformed masses of thin round galls.

Conservation statusSilver cluster-leaf is not listed on the Red Data List as a threatened species.

It may grow as a dominant or co-dominant species in mixed deciduous forests such as Brachystegia, mopane, Combretum or Acacia forest. It occurs from Tanzania and the DRC southwards to Angola and Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. A good place in South Africa to find silver cluster-leaf is the Kruger National Park (KNP) area.

Golf News

Club Championship 2014The Annual Club Champs for the A+B division took place on 17th and 18th May 2014.

It was a full field; all players were up bright and early for this year’s annual Dainfern Club Championships. The players checked in and play started at 07h00 with the B-Division teeing off early and the A-division in the afternoon. The conditions were perfect with a slight breeze, the greens were running fast and course was playing to its absolute best condition.

After the cut for the last day, the 90 players went off the Sunday knowing that it was anyone’s Championship. In the B-Division overnight leader Gabriel Reeder after opening round of 78 finished strong with a 91 to secure a second place in the B-division. The honours went to young Axel Nobreus, he was one shot behind Gabriel after the first round, but kept his nerves to finish with an 89 on Sunday and winning by one shot on a total of 168. He did however lose on a count-out for the best overall Nett to David Meyers. We would like to congratulate Axel on a great win and wish him all the best going back to Sweden.

The A-division was in for a great finish. Defending Champion David Meyers was closely matched by Mathew

Spacey playing in his first Club Champs at Dainfern. David finished the first round with a very good 70, but Mathew was just one shot behind and closely followed by Brody Leather on an even par 72 for his first round. David did show a lot a character and lots of nerve in the final round. The course set-up was tough and the wind didn’t make it any easier for the players. David kept calm and finished with a total of 142 to take the Club Championship by one shot.

The Senior Champion for 2014 was Steve Meyer on a total of 161, only one shot ahead of Colin Steyn. David Meyers also won the best overall Nett on a count-out with Axel Nobreus.

We would like to congratulate each and every player. To Clinton and his course staff, the course was in excellent condition and played to its absolute best. We would like to thank our sponsors once again for making this tournament such a great success.

Running Club

Running World CupDuring the month of May, you may have noticed the colourful and sometimes outlandish attire of our runners. We apologise to the stragglers on the golf course who may have been shocked to see psychedelic mohicans and beaded dreadlocks charging down the 18th fairway!

For more information on the Running Club contact Wendy Wood at [email protected].

The Running Club held its first ever ‘Running World Cup’ in which 7 teams battled it out over five weeks to earn the title and the fabulous prize sponsored by Smartcore Insurance.

Never before have we had so many people spectating, and they were not disappointed – between the close finishes for first place, the applause as runners completed longer distances than usual just to earn extra points and the en-tertaining costumes, they were treated to five weeks of very exciting time trials.

The ‘Vikings’ (from Sweden) were victorious in the end, but the ‘Dainfern Kids’ gave them a good run and must be commended on their team spirit and excellent times they ran, earning them a number of first places. ‘Ama-jogga’ (proudly South African) did our flag proud and there spirit was infectious. The ‘Flying Dutchmen’ were not to be outdone and attained a number of first places. ‘Great Brit-Run’ went so far as to fly in support from the UK! ‘Danish Dynamite’ and ‘Italy’ also put in a great effort.

Thank you for your enthusiasm to all who participated and special thanks to our sponsors – Smartcore Insurance and Meat by reservation – for making this possible.

Tennis Update

Why we love TennisDuane Armstrong 082 456 5441 • [email protected] • www.armstrongtennisacademy.co.za

WOW, there are so many reasons why people love tennis. As a young boy all I wanted to do was hit that ball. Its wasn’t about the power, or killing the ball, or beating the opponent, I just loved hitting that green ball.

I often think back to my early tennis days and my true love and passion for the game. I have so many fond memories and it just seems like yesterday, and if I could I would have it all over again. Thinking of my childhood playing tennis puts me in a different, happy world.

I have travelled for many years and met many tennis players and tennis enthusiasts, and to watch their love for the game is amazing. It’s like a person can’t get enough of hitting a tennis ball. Two things convincingly got me off a court, Exhaustion and being famished. But then you know you had fun and trained hard.

It is so nice to see people of all ages playing tennis for the love of it, regardless if they are hitting the ball well or not, young or old. I am very fortunate to live on a tennis court and have the opportunity to watch people play, enjoy themselves and grow memories such as I once did.

The Dainfern courts are so popular and used for hours every day. The atmosphere is amazing with people from all walk playing tennis and having fun.

Saying that a person always grows in the game and experience new things and meet new people. The beauty is that we are all individuals and seek our own satisfaction in tennis with our own goals. Be it youngsters striving to compete and be the best, kids playing at school for their team, kids simply taking to the court to hit balls, playing league, seniors competing on the senior circuit, chasing a ranking, or the older players getting together having a weekly game. What an amazing game to offer so much to such a broad spectrum of players.

Everyone has their own reason for playing and they all love it. If tennis has offered so much to me and so many millions of other people, what an awesome game!!

Health Coach

What is a Health Coach?

Most of us are hoping for a long and healthy life – free of pain, disease and suffering. So a lifestyle that improves your health should be what we are aiming at. The advice to help this changes daily, even from professionals and this can be so confusing. Is milk good for you or not? Should I eat for my blood type or be a vegetarian? What is the whole thing on soy? How much do I have to exercise?

A health coach will benefit you in many ways. Using an individual approach, they will encourage and show you the steps to a healthy lifestyle.

If you would like a FREE Health History Consultation to see if you could benefit from a health coach, phone me, Monica Condy, on 082 459 1539, or email me at [email protected]

Are you living your life in a way that improves you health? If so – fantastic! If you have got lost somewhere along the way, you may need a health coach

They will monitor your diet and exercise. They will ensure you are on track and doing all you need in terms of your personal work and they can keep you on track for your goals and keep you accountable.

Often it’s not the broccoli on your plate but the love in your life.
