Minutes from the July Quarterly Meeting

Minutes of the 3rd Quarterly Meeting September 10, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 8:00 PM by Secretary Bob Marlow.  It was noted that President Pro Tempore Rich Ribble was en route to Texas and that Vice President David Main was unable to attend.

Upon motion duly made and approved, the minutes of the prior business meeting were approved as published in the newsletter.

Treasurer Tim Schwartz reported the following account balances as of August 31: Checking account, $6,028.33; CD #1, $3,627.18; CD #2, $1,504.67.  Total funds on hand, $11,160.18.

Publicity Vice President Greg Gorski updated the plans for the October 18 Fall Foliage Tour, which will commence at the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Clinton and travel via back roads to the Crayola factory and museum in Easton, Pennsylvania.  The visit to Crayola will be followed by a group lunch at Pearly Bakers Alehouse in Easton.

Upon motion duly made and approved, it was decided that the club would pick up the cost of admission to the Crayola facility for all members and guests of members for this event.

Activities Vice President Ken Schifftner reviewed upcoming plans, which include the 4th Quarter business meeting on November 12, the annual Holiday Party on December 14, and a trip to the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse dinner theatre on January 31.  A general discussion led to the agreement that a pair of tickets to the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse event would be given to a winning member via a drawing at the November meeting.

NECC representative Brian O’Neill gave a quick synopsis of the recent “Corvair Olympics” in Indianapolis, and spoke of the upcoming track event at Summit Point, West Virginia.

Old Business: A general discussion led to the agreement that the October issue of the newsletter would contain a nominations form for club officers for 2009, and that final nominations and the elections would take place at the November meeting.  [Note, following the meeting the officers determined that the elections will take place at the December 14 Holiday Party.]  Also planned for the November meeting was a repeat of “Corvair Bingo,” which was planned for earlier this year but which was at that time cut short due to an overly-long business meeting.

New Business: Ken Schifftner invited a discussion about the club possibly making a financial contribution to the Corvair Preservation Foundation (CPF).  From this discussion it was determined that the officers would assemble a plan for club action in this regard, including such matters as supporting other causes such as the CORSA Racing Fund and/or local charities such as food banks, and that this plan would be presented to the members at a subsequent meeting.

The formal portion of the meeting was adjourned at 8:37 PM. Respectfully Submitted, Bob Marlow, Secretary

Pioneer Weekend September 6th

Threats of downpours from hurricane Hanna didn't deter a stalwart group of NJACE members in making the now-annual trip to Ray and Kathy's Pioneer Campground in Laporte, PA. Hanna did scare away the Corvair vehicles, however, since their owners decided to leave them safely at home. Given the bad weather threat, host Ray shifted the weekend plan from an outdoor local Corvair cruise tour to indoor "Plan B". And what a "Plan B" it was! He took some of us to see part of a 180+ car private collection in a nearby town. It is owned by a person connected to the wealthy Cargill family. Contained in three (3) separate environmentally controlled buildings, we saw about 70 of the collection. All of the vehicles, save one, could have been driven to a car show. They were in pristine condition. Some were "sleeper" modified with more powerful powertrains but didn't have the "hot-rod" look. There were seven (7) Corvettes. A 1940 Ford Tudor, rare Camaros, a GT350 Mustang, a plethora of '57 Chevies, and rare four wheel drive GMC and Chevy trucks from the 1950's. Regarding the latter, both Bob Marlow and Brian O'Neill immediately recognized the trucks as NAPCO modifications. These trucks sit high off the ground (on purpose for ground clearance and to allow room for the four wheel drive mecha nisms) and were workhorses in their day...that is why few survive. An amazing collection! And, we snuck in our "Good Deed for the Day".... On the trip back from the car collection, Ray noticed an RV had broken down on the road near the campground...so he and Bob went and towed the vehicle (with the owner's going along for the ride) back to the campground. Broken serpentine belt...we waited until the next day to give a try at a repair. That night, our hosts fired up the grill and we all feasted on fresh corn, muchies, baked beans, and the grillables we had brought. After that, we got a fire going in the fire pit and sat around singing John Denver songs....no actually we sat around talking about how nice it is to relax and share stories with friends around a campfire in beautiful, rural, Pennsylvania. The following morning, an NJACE crew set about fixing the RV. Ken slid under the rig to do the mechanical part, Brian took care of high level issues, Ray was quality control, and Ribs (electrical expert) stood by if and when needed. We put the owner's spare belt back on and a few hours later the RV owners were on their way! On Sunday, some folks went to a scenic overlook. Others started the drive home. Farewells and thanks were given to Ribs who is off to his motherland...Texas. It was a great weekend....take THAT, Hanna! Submitted by Ken Schifftner

Do You Remember “Burma Shave”? Once, long ago, cars went slow and "super" highways were two lanes. One of the joys of driving back in those good 'ol days was reading the Burma-Shave signs by the side of the road. One after another, they told a little upbeat story, all with the punch line "Burma-Shave." For those too young to remember Burma-Shave, it was a brushless shaving cream. Today, anyone older than 55 fondly remembers the red and white signs that advertised the product along America's rural highways and byways. On a nondescript stretch of road, where the best scenery might be a pasture with cows, the sight of Burma-Shave signs ahead was reason for celebration -- the monotony broken.

Since we are driving through the country side for our tour it would be a nice reminder of years gone by-

Ken Schifftner
