IntertechPira’s 2nd annual Concentrating Solar Thermal Power 2010 conference and exhibition is the must-attend CSP event of the year. Building on the success of the inaugural conference which attracted more than 150 delegates to San Francisco last June, this year’s highly anticipated event offers a comprehensive program packed with presentations and panel discussions on the most important issues affecting the CSP industry. Concentrating Solar Thermal Power 2010 features an unparalleled line up of speakers who will share perspectives on important issues, including federal and state incentives, financing and funding, transmission, siting and permitting, thermal storage, engineering, procurement and construction. The program will also include presentations from CSP technology and project developers, and a panel presentation from utilities actively involved with CSP projects. Plan to arrive early to attend a half day seminar led by David Kearney, Andrew McMahan and John White which promises to provide attendees with a thorough background and overview of CSP technology and projects. Be sure to check out the complete agenda and save your spot today!

Industry overviewThe global CSP industry is on the verge of booming, as industry experts anticipate installations to double in 2010 and over 15 GW of installed capacity by 2014. In the next few years Spain is projected to be the world leader in CSP installations, with the US overtaking by 2014. On the technology front, parabolic trough systems still remain as the leading CSP technology; however, central receiver, dish engine, and other CSP technologies are quickly gaining commercial momen-tum and will likely capture market share from troughs in the near term. Despite the extraordinary growth anticipated, these next few years will also provide a substantial amount of challenges including permitting, plant design and construction, reliability, thermal storage, transmission, and funding and financing. Competition will remain high as many new technology developers work to commercialize their products. Concentrating Solar Thermal Power 2010 will present comprehensive coverage of all these topics and more, providing you with the competitive intelligence necessary to keep you steps ahead of competition.

Pre-conference seminar- Wednesday, May 5, 2010, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (separate fee required)

An Overview of CSP: Technology, Systems, SEGS Developments, Current Project Development and R&D

CSP has been commercially viable since the early 1980’s with the construction of the SEGS plants built in California’s Mojave Desert. After a quiet decade of low oil prices in the 1990s, interest in CSP has resurged in the last several years because of its potential to deliver large amounts of dispatchable renewable energy at the utility-scale. Recently, however, large plant deployments have been delayed by developmental issues such as land use, financing and permitting. This seminar will set the stage for the more detailed presentations at the conference itself, first by reviewing the fundamental characteristics of the major CSP thermal-based electric technologies - troughs, towers and dishes – then highlighting both common and unique features embodied in their design and operation.

Topics will include:• Technology configurations, power plant applications, and performance • CSP benefits and barriers • Typical methods and resources to estimate site solar radiation and to calculate performance and

economics using the NREL SAM model

Overview of the commercial space:• New CSP technology providers and developers in recent years• Current projects announced in the U.S. and Spain• Permitting requirements, land use, water use, environmental issues

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) was

founded with the idea that providing electric power to Sacramento was a job best done by a public utility overseen by an elected Board of directors. For 60 years, we’ve done just that, providing Sacramento County (and a small part of Placer County) with a reliable source of electricity at competitive rates that are consistently lower than investor-owned utilities in the state.

SkyFuel The expectations for renewable energy often collide with

reality. Our mission is to create practical, yet innovative solutions based on thermal concentrating solar power, the most realistic technology for meeting energy needs at a scale and cost that can displace fossil fuels and meet the demands of a modern society.
