We have come to the end of the

first half of the lionistic year and we

can safely say that we have grown.

But lions have we truly grown? Have

our club life. Have contributed in the

answer to these questions is yes,

Castries assisted at the Super J Yoplait

Breast Cancer Awareness walk. A number

of Lions and Leos participated in the walk.

The walk was to raise awareness of Breast

Cancer in Saint Lucia and also to remem-

ber those we lost through this disease. The

funds raised from the Yoplait sale and the

walk will go to the National Community

Foundation - which is an NGO set up to

provide assistance to needy persons in ar-

eas such as medical and educational

expenses among a few.

nered with a number of organizations - Lions club of Cas-

tries, Ministry of Health, Super J supermarket, Lady

Gordon Opportunity Center, Peter and Company and

many others to host a Health Fair in the William Peer

Boulevard. High blood Pressure

professionals on hand. The Blood Bank was also available so-

liciting persons to donate blood The fair which lasted from 9

am to 4 pm saw hundreds of citizens coming to get tested, to

MY CLUB MY FAMILY

In observance of Diabetes Awareness month the

members of the Lions Club of Castries engaged

the services of former Lion Sister Elvina

Ravenaeu to conduct a lecture session with

the students of Grades 5 and 6 of the Canon

Laurie Anglican Primary School on the warn-

ing signs of Diabetes Myths and facts. The over

120 students were enthusiastic and the interac-

tion was great. The lecture session debunked a

number of myths which the students had and the

newly acquired information can now be shared

with parents, siblings and friends

INTERNATIONAL LEO DAY– December 5, 2012

Health Corner : P A G E 3 V O L U M E 5 I S S U E 2

1. Quit the sugar habit. The average

can of sugar-sweetened soda or fruit punch provides about 150 calories. If you were to drink just one can of a

sugar-sweetened soft drink every day, and not cut back on calories elsewhere, you could gain up to 15 pounds in a

year. Cutting back on sugary drinks may help control your weight and may lower your risk of type 2 diabetes.

2. Go calorie-free naturally. “Diet” drinks with artificial sweeteners may condition our taste buds to crave super-

sweet foods. Plain old water is the best calorie-free beverage—but if it’s just too plain, try adding a squeeze of

lemon or lime or a splash of 100% fruit juice. Plain coffee and tea are also healthy calorie-free choices, in modera-

tion.

3. If you don’t drink alcohol, there’s no need to start. Moderate alcohol consumption lowers the risk of heart disease

and diabetes; it also slightly increases the risk of breast and colon cancer. For some people—especially pregnant

women, people recovering from alcohol addiction, people with liver disease, and people taking one or more medica-

tions that interact with alcohol—the risks of drinking clearly outweigh the benefits.

4. Save sports drinks for athletes. Sports beverages are designed to give athletes carbs, electrolytes, and fluid during

high-intensity workouts that last an hour or more. For sedentary folks, they’re just another source of sugary calories.

5. Pull the plug on energy drinks. These pricey concoctions have as much sugar as soft drinks, enough caffeine to raise

your blood pressure, and an unpronounceable list of herbs and additives whose long-term health effects are unknown.

No one needs them.

There are many options for what to drink, but without a doubt, water is the best choice: It's calorie-free, and it's as

easy to find as the nearest tap.

Thanks to the Man-

agement and staff of

Consolidated Food

Limited, the mem-

bers of the Lions

Club of Castries and

the Leos, prospective members and friends who

participated in this activity.

trict Governor. The Zone

Secretary will be circulating

a form that we developed to assist in that regard.

The second half will begin with a bang; first we will

convene our Zone Advisory meeting followed by

Zone meeting. Members in the Zone should make

every effort to support the Region Chairman – Lion

Rhon Stephens at his Region Meeting in Barbados.

This will be following by the District Governor visit

to audit the clubs.

hold the banner of Lionism high in Zone 3B as we

recommit ourselves to “STILL BELIEVE IN A

WORLD OF SERVICE”.

Let me wish you and your families a spirit filled

Christmas and a blessed and fruitful 2013.

A woman is in bed with her lover who also happens to be her husband's best friend. They had sex for

hours, and afterwards, while they're just laying there, the phone rings. Since it is the woman's house, she

picks up the receiver. Her lover looks over at her and listens, only hearing her side of the conversation...

She is speaking in a cheery voice) "Hello? Oh, hi. I'm so glad that you called. Really? That's wonderful. I

am so happy for you. That sounds terrific. Great! Thanks. Okay. Bye." She hangs up the telephone and her

lover asks, "Who was that?" "Oh" she replies, "that was my husband telling me all about the wonderful

time he's having on his fishing trip with you." source: http://www.jokes4us.com/peoplejokes/hookerjokes/
