Improvise, Adapt and Overcome…. What I Learnt when Volunteering in VietnamI’m just back from a week of volunteering in Vietnam. It was my first time undertaking such an adventure and it’s fair to say that I’ve been hyped about it since January. I’ve always wanted to volunteer in an underprivileged country and when this opportunity arose it seemed too good to pass up. An American acupuncturist was organising the trip and I became one of nine acupuncturists from all over the world that he accepted on his team.

We were to treat in a Buddhist Pagoda. It was all set up. The monks put the word out, a sign went up and the needles and other supplies were shipped over. By the time we were due to arrive there were already patients waiting for us. And then it all went south! The authorities became agitated by the volume of people gathering and the whole concept of 10 internationals treating their people, well, it didn’t sit well, so they closed us down. We were threatened with jail if we treated and the threat was real. This was the first time that I was confronted with communism head on and it was scary. It was also the first time that I understood the value of the freedom that we have here, something I have always very much taken for granted.

When confronted with adversity you can react in many ways. Fortunately, I was with a group of people that don’t take such things lying down. We rallied around, we looked at what we could do to still gain something from our trip. We talked about having seminars with

our group leader, of learning from him, and learning from each other so that we could bring that learning home. The challenges we faced brought us closer together, it united us. And it also forced us to confront our own inadequacies and hang-ups. I was suddenly faced with having to prove myself to a group of my peers. At least that’s how it felt. And I suffer with severe stage fright in those sorts of situations. My trip of a lifetime suddenly turned into my worst nightmare.

But I did it…I overcame my fear. And that is what the week became about…improvising, overcoming and adapting. We did treat patients. We improvised and adapted and snuck them into hotels and treated them there and they got better. We came together as a team and supported each other and learnt from each other. It wasn’t the trip that we planned but it became something better and I was humbled by it. I was humbled by a country that has known more atrocities than any country should; by a people that remain open-hearted despite this; by the expertise and compassion of my fellow volunteers; by the tenacity and dedication of the organisers; and most of all by the power of the medicine that we practice. I have returned a better person and a better acupuncturist from a trip that taught me about myself and how to improvise, adapt and overcome.

Pressure! At this time of the year we often get hassled parents, and occasionally students, asking for support in the lead up to exams. Lots of TLC of course, and a good healthy diet are top of the list. Humans evolved eating lots of oily fish and fresh grains, nuts and seeds which contained high levels of essential fats. As a result, over 60% of the dry weight of our brains comprises omega-3, but few of us eat enough of the right foods to supply the optimum amount, so a supplement of fish oils gives the brain a good useful boost.

Exercise is a great way to support the nervous system as well as physical health: a swim, a work-out or just a walk helps to keep anyone on an even keel.

Nerves a bit fragile? Since it appeared on our shelves a couple of years Viridian’s l-theanine and lemon balm complex has been a hit. It helps to lower stress

and at the same time increases focus, a boon for examinees. Balance for Nerves from Higher Nature is another effective de-stresser at any time of the year, and works specially well with Passiflora to switch off an over-active brain at night - provided no prescribed medication for the nervous system is in use.

East Cork ICA...The perception some people have of ICA is of “old fogies” drinking tea and nattering and really nothing could be further from the truth. In the ICA we are very conscious of the need for people to interact in a friendly atmosphere where everyone's opinion is encouraged and more importantly valued. If you are "an appendage to the machine" as Karl Marx wrote about the Industrial Revolution, does your machine/mobile dictate how you live or do you decide?

In the ICA we can and do switch off...and be more mindful of our health by learning new skills such as cooking, crafts, photography, painting, singing, simple fun exercises and dancing, all group activities where everyone is encouraged to have a go; the hidden talents of people are amazing where a little praise and encouragement can unleash a surprise.

This year for the first time the ICA have a ‘Cailín’ entered in the Cork selection for the Rose of Tralee and the lovely winner was entered by Knockraha guild, which is a very active group of ladies who work tirelessly in their local community as well as donating goods and money to several charities. The audience on the night of the selection, which included children, women and men were fulsome in praise of the welcome they all got from the ICA ladies.

Friendship, fun and caring sums up what the ICA is all about - if you have any one or all of these attributes and the ICA needs you!

Bounce Back with Placenta Capsule Healing….In this month’s issue I’m going to explain how my service works, as this is a question I get asked all the time.

Once you’ve completed my booking form we arrange delivery of your cooler-bag kit which you will bring with you to the hospital, this will ensure that your placenta is chilled until collection.

You contact me once labour begins and again when your baby arrives. Your midwife places the placenta in your container …this always reassures the Dads!! I then arrange hospital collection with your birth partner.

When I get back to my dedicated placenta preparation room I wash, slice and dehydrate the placenta, mill it into a fine powder and then make into capsules.

Once complete, I arrange delivery with the Dad/birth partner, the whole process takes 2-3 days.

REPORTED BENEFITS INCluDE:• Increased Energy and Milk Supply

• Wards off Post Natal Depression

• Balances Hormones• Restores Iron Levels• Helps Recovery

So, how can I start using homeopathy at home?A question I hear all the time at Homeopathy East Cork-- from parents eager to discover safe and natural alternatives in treating their babies and/or growing children. We are all aware of the effect antibiotics and medicines are having on our eco system/gut health and patients are looking for a safe and effective form of treatment.

Of course, the first step to experience the huge natural benefits of homeopathy is to start using these remedies at home. Having a go to list of the top 10 first aid remedies is the best way to begin. Think of it as your natural first aid box, we all want to empower ourselves and improve our health and wellbeing, don’t we? For example, everyone has heard of Arnica and how it can help with the bumps and bruises kids walk in the door with every day. A lesser known remedy Apis

is so effective in treating bee stings. This first aid list can help you in treating vomiting bugs, cold sores, teething, conjunctivitis, coughs/colds and fevers among others.

So, just contact me with your name and email and we will send out your very own easy to follow Top 10 list of remedies and what to use them for.

For chronic/long term conditions a homeopathic consultation is necessary.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Men experiencing pregnancy or childbirth related depressionThere is widespread belief that antenatal and postnatal depression is only experienced by women. Evidence based research suggests that this is not the case.

Men who are experiencing depression, anxiety, or loss may not recognise the risk factors or symptoms of how they feel. These feelings can affect men of all ages, personality types and economic status.

Research shows that men experience depression because of or in conjunction with their partner’s depression. While maternal postnatal depression is the strongest predictor of paternal postnatal depression it is not always the cause, men can experience antenatal and postnatal depression independently from their partners.

New fathers are generally not as open

as mothers and find it very difficult to express how they are feeling. Symptoms can include: tiredness, headaches and pain, irritability, anxiety and anger, loss of libido, changes in appetite, feelings of being overwhelmed, out of control and unable to cope.

For the full article and more information, see www.nurturecharity.org/get-info/men-and-depression. Our HQ is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm. You can call us on 041 982 2022 and we can arrange an appointment with a counsellor in your area.

Pieta House To Relocate Cork Premises From Highfield Lawn In Bishopstown To Superb Facility In Shanakiel

Pieta House announced that its Cork centre is being relocated from Highfield Lawn in Bishopstown to a new facility in Shanakiel House in Shanakiel. The relocation, which will have no impact on clients or the services provided, will take place in June 2018. The move is set to provide more stability for the services of Pieta House in Cork city and county.

Since it was established to provide freely accessible, professional services to people who are in suicidal crisis or who are self-harming, Pieta House has worked with over 36,000 clients, and has become one of Ireland’s leading charitable organisations. Pieta House began operating in Cork in December 2013, where it now also provides suicide bereavement counselling.

The relocation of the Cork centre has been supported by JCD who acquired Shanakiel House as part of the transfer of Shanakiel Hospital to the Mater Private at City Gate. An extensive refurbishment of the original building is underway and will be completed by the June move in date. Set in over 6 acres of landscaped grounds, the facility enjoys panoramic views over Cork

City.

CEO of Pieta House, Brian Higgins, commented, “Pieta House would like to extend its gratitude to the team at JCD for their support, which has enabled us to move to a state of the art facility and better support the communities we already serve in both Cork city and county. The move will allow us to continue the services we offer with the reassurance of more stability.”

John Cleary, Managing Director of JCD, also commented, “We are delighted to be in a position to support the vital work provided by Pieta House. The newly refurbished Shanakiel House provides an ideal setting and will continue the building’s long history of supporting Cork’s community. We hope the new

facility in Shanakiel will be the flagship centre of the Pieta House organisation.”

Pieta House, which started as a small, Dublin-based charity in 2006, now employs over 270 therapists and administrative staff nationwide and has 15 centres across the country. In 2017 alone, over 7,000 people came through its doors. From day one, all the services it provides have been offered completely free of charge. As over 85% of its income comes from fundraising events and donations, Pieta House relies heavily on the support of its charity partners.

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland…...the Month of May for Tea Day!The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is the national leader in advocating for and providing dementia-specific supports and services and each year the organisation provides more than one million hours of community-based dementia-specific care throughout Ireland. The ASI is national organisation which has a service or support in almost every country in Ireland with almost 900 staff and 300 volunteers across the country.

A national non-profit organisation, the ASI is person-centred, rights-based and grassroots led with the voice of the person with dementia and their carer at its core. The ASI operates the Alzheimer National Helpline offering information and support to anyone affected by dementia at 1800 341 341 and provides many other supports and services to people with dementia and their carers across Ireland including 51 Day Care Centres and

one Respite Care Centre.

The ASI also provides Home Care, Family Carer Training, Dementia Advisers, Alzheimer Cafes and Social Clubs.

Alzheimer’s Tea Day, which is held on Thursday, May 3rd, is the ASI’s largest annual fundraising campaign, supported for the third year by Medtronic, a global leader in medical technology.

Since the very first Alzheimer’s Tea Day in 1994 almost €8 million has been raised to provide essential support to the 55,000 people living with dementia in Ireland today.

Every year, thousands of people host tea parties in their homes, offices and schools – this year we are asking you to join them. All funds that are raised locally from Tea Day events will stay locally.

There is nothing we Irish love more than sharing a cup of tea with friends and families, where the issues of the day are discussed. With one in two people in Ireland knowing someone who has been diagnosed with dementia, calling around for a cup of tea is also a great way to bring a little light into the day of someone who may be isolated in their own community.

RTÉ presenter and Rose of Tralee host, Dáithí Ó Sé is our Tea Day ambassador for 2018.

Dáithí Ó Sé said: “I’m delighted to support Alzheimer’s Tea Day again this year for a third year running. There are 55,000 people living with dementia in Ireland today, so that’s 55,000 good reasons to get the kettle on. What alarms me is that this number is set to double in the next 20 years. By taking part in this campaign you are helping

to raise vital funds and awareness of a condition that is affecting so many of our family, friends and neighbours. What’s important to remember is that money raised locally stays locally, so by getting involved you’ll be supporting your own community.”

Children’s Dental Health…...why it's so important. In this month’s article I would like to concentrate on Children’s dental health and how the attitudes and habits that form in the developmental years can impact significantly on a lifetime of dentistry.

Baby teeth (Also called Primary or Deciduous teeth) start to form 3 weeks after conception, and their development continues after birth, until at around age 2.5 years when all baby teeth are present in the mouth. The permanent successors appear as early as 5 years of age in some cases and by this point the attitude and dental health of the child is already well established. This does not mean that it cannot change but it does get harder to change habits as time progresses!

PRIMARY TEETH ARE IMPORTANT FOR:• Eating• Smiling• Talking• Guiding Permanent Teeth

into place Some parents still consider that the primary teeth are not important because they fall out

and are replaced by permanent teeth. However, besides their obvious importance for eating, appearance and speech, healthy primary teeth are also essential for guiding permanent teeth, which develop underneath them, into their correct positions. The primary molars, usually the last of the primary teeth to fall out, are normally not replaced by their permanent successors until about age 12 years. Early neglect of primary teeth can result in many problems. Tooth decay in a young child can quickly lead to pain and infection (abscess) and, because of their young age, dental treatment can be difficult and may have to be carried out under general anaesthetic - a procedure that is not without risk. If a young child's primary molar tooth must be taken out (extracted) due to severe tooth decay, then the guide for the permanent successor is lost. The space available for the permanent tooth can be reduced, resulting in crowding or misalignment of the permanent tooth.

Furthermore, studies have shown

that children who experience tooth decay in the primary dentition have a higher risk in their permanent dentition too! ...This means more dentistry, costs, anxiety and reduced health overall. In short it is a bad idea to allow things to get to this point. So, what can you do?

Manage Diet and Cleaning habits from as early an age as possible

Ensure you, as a parent, are aware of the hidden sugars that permeate a huge proportion of the food/drink available in our supermarkets

NO DRINKS GOING TO BED! Bottle or “Nursing” decay is like bathing teeth in sugar and decay is aggressive and extensive.

Watch the FREQUENCY of intake…multiple small snacks are far more harmful than larger quantities of sugars/acids in a single sitting!

Be a positive role model at home regarding healthy teeth… brushing your teeth is NOT a punishment!

Bring your child to the Dentist as early as 2 years old to ensure you have good advice/support going forwards…. leaving it until 7 years old is far more common in my experience, and for many the problems have already begun!

Preventive approaches such as Fissure sealants, Fluoride provision, Oral Hygiene Instruction and Mouth guards (to prevent Traumatic injuries) should all be part of the solution towards healthy teeth.

Cork Women’s Asperger’s Group…...was established in 2014 by me, Fiona Quinn, after my own late diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome at the age of 43. We meet twice a month in Blackrock for a couple of hours to support each other and share our experiences. I genuinely believe that it is our lived experience of Autism that make us the true experts!

I wanted to create a safe space just for women on the autism spectrum to be ourselves and learn, laugh and empower each other to live authentically just as we are.

HERE ARE SOME THOuGHTS FROM A FEW MEMBERS OF OuR GROuP --”It’s amazing because of all the wonderful women who attend, share, be vulnerable and support each other in our own vulnerability. The group because of Fiona’s dedication been a fantastic support and a wonderful place for learning more about myself since my diagnosis" - E

-"The group provides a safe space where we can be ourselves with our masks off" - E

-"The group to me: Is a safe place, where I can be me, I can hear and see myself in others. I can take comfort

that I am understood without having to mask. The group to me is my freedom. It is a couple of hours where I can either share or listen...but I’m always learning and evolving in either instance. To you, who have yet to discover this incredible space….make time for it….you will be most welcome" -K

-"Because it feels like home" - M

-"Thanks to the group I have find out that we are full of empathy, we do not want to hurt people or let them down. Neurotypical people suit themselves all the time and apparently it is quite normal attitude in life. So, I have become a little bit more selfish since my diagnosis. I am no longer the girl who drops everything to help a friend pick out a dress for a party." - B

-"Realising you may be autistic is absolutely mind blowing. Often there’s a lightbulb

moment that opens a floodgate of questions and emotion. Spend any time exploring female autism and you’ll discover how skilled we are at masking our differences to fit in, often at great personal cost. Now imagine how liberating it feels to find a welcoming tribe of truly awesome women who guide and support you to embrace the you, you were born to be. Fate intervened for me and an ad appeared in my Facebook feed just as that bulb pinged. Braving my doubts and fears to contact Fiona and meet the group has been life changing". E

If you suspect or know you are on the autism spectrum and would like to join our women's group then please contact me by email [email protected] or 089 459 7730 and follow our Facebook page for info on female autism.

CranioSacral Therapy for Babies with Feeding IssuesMany of the babies that I treat have feeding issues; these can vary from not being able to latch on, to babies, “bobbing on and off” to” taking forever to feed and still only having taking an ounce.” I evaluate the whole body and treat any restrictions I may find first. The treatment that is most effective in treating feeding issues is Mouth Work. I very gently insert my finger into the baby’s mouth, 0-5 g. I work on the bones that make up the inside of the mouth. I also work on the tongue. Babies that had vacuum or forceps delivery would be more likely to have feeding issues. Tongue tie is also a factor.

It is good practice to have CST preformed pre and post tounge tie op.

Anxiety in kids......is distressing but it can be managed. Here are our top 5 tips to dealing with an anxious child.

1. Always respect & accept your child's feelings. Anxiety is real and can be emotionally draining.

2. Encourage your child to be brave and empower them with positive phrases such as ''I am so proud of you for.' or ''I know you are strong enough to do this''. Positive words lead to a positive mindset!

3. Breathe in to your belly. Close your eyes & take a deep breath in through the nose hold for 2 counts then exhale slowly through the mouth. Repeat 3 times

4. Look around you and ground your child by this technique. Name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell and one thing you can taste.

5. Be consistent with your partner and other family members about how you handle your child’s anxiety. Consistency and patience is the key to making them feel safe.

‘A smile is a curve that sets everything straight’ Phyllis Diller

I sat in front of a friend during the week and put a pill on the table in front of him. As he gave me a puzzled look I asked him would he be willing to take something that had the following medical benefits: Increases feel good neurotransmitters, Dopamine, Endorphins, Serotonin, Reduce the production of the stress hormone Cortisol, Reduces Heart Rate and blood pressure, Activates Executive Brain Function

Not only that, it also had the following benefits: No Side Effects, Makes Friends, Increased Productivity, Encourage Trust, Produce Empathy, Avoid Regret, Increases Attention, Contagious, Earn Success, Look Younger, Longevity.

Needless to say, he was interested and was ready to take the pill straight away.

Much to his disappointment I took the pill away and much to his delight I told him I had a better method. One that could be taken anytime anywhere and best of all was free.

One of nature’s best kept secrets – the healing power of a smile.

Smiling has become the subject of a lot of research in the last few years and the results are very interesting. Neuropeptides allow neurons to communicate and facilitate how emotions such as being sad, angry, happy, depressed or excited are messaged to the whole body. The feel-good neurotransmitters including dopamine, endorphins and serotonin are also released when you smile.

Serotonin is the body’s natural anti-depressant and mood lifter while endorphins are the body’s natural pain killers – 100% organic. When you add in the reduced amount of the stress chemical Cortisol being released into the body it becomes obvious that the simple act of smiling is well worth practicing more often.

While there are many kinds of smiles the one that is considered the most genuine is named after the French physician that identified it –Guillanne Duchenne. The ‘Duchenne Smile’ involves smiling with the mouth and crinkling the eyes. And as we learn there are many fake smiles too. That is why it is important to smile from your heart not your mind.

In my Tai Chi and Hypnotherapy practice I

include specific meditations and visualisations to help my clients connect with what we call in the Inner Smile. This is the practice of smiling without needing anything to happen outside you to make you smile. You simply take time throughout the day to take a minute or two to smile while you recall something that you feel a deep sense of gratitude for. In the next issue I will include a specific exercise on how to tap into this state.

Until then stay well and smile your life,

Martin Forrest,Tai Chi Coach, Author, Motivational Speaker,

Complimentary Health Therapist, Clinical Hypnotherapist

Information Library Box…...for CastlemartyrThe Castlemartyr Family Carers and Disability Support Group are delighted to be working on an information Library Box to be placed by the disability viewing area by the River Kiltha in Castlemartyr. This will be an opportunity for the community to exchange information on contacts and health issues for family Carers and people with Disability in our community. There will be no charge for the information books. People can just take what they need and return for someone else when finished.

Local businesses can also leave flyers of the services they have to offer in our community.

We will have an official launch of this project when it's finished. There are many services available for the family carers, elderly and the disabled, that our community is not aware of.

It will be a good place to pick up your free,
