Both miners are part of a team piloting the use of grease lubricators on drills, scissor lift trucks, underground lifts and other equipment. "The new grease is thicker. It has compounds in it that don't allow it to disperse through the air or on the plat- form of your truck (scissor lift)," said Carl. "So you're not slipping and sliding everywhere. You don't get covered in oil anymore by the end of a shift." That cleanliness feature also has a production-effi- ciency facet to it because there's virtually no oil in the ore going to Clarabelle Mill now. Oil can interfere with the flotation process at the mill. Even loading the grease is cleaner thanks to the grease lubricators, with less likeli- hood of any spillage on equip- ment such as a scissor truck. In underground condi- tions, there's generally a chance of dirt contaminotion when oil is being poured into equipment. The dirt can clog the passage of the oil leading to excessive wear and shorter operating lives for drills. But grease is supplied in plas- tic sochets. grease had been in use in theNorth American mining indus-try some 20 years ago when hestarted working underground.

The grease itself isn't, by anymeans, a new product.

It was developed in SouthAfrica in 1954 and is used insome 55,000 drills at all minesin that country. It is recom-mended by the world's largestmanufacturer of pneumaticdrills.

But South African greaselubricators weren't suitable forthe North American marketbecause of differences inadapting equipment.

Testing of a North Ameri-can application of the greaselubricators began in Sudburyin mid-1994. Testing at SouthMine's 2,050, 3,500 and 4,250levels began in October 1996.

In the year since, employeestesting the grease lubncatorshave noticed an 83 to 90 percent drop in oil mist exposure.

There have also been manyimprovements in overall effi-ciency thanks to the newgrease applications, while lu-bncation costs have remainedequal to using oil.

The grease lubricators havebeen tested on many pieces ofunderground equipment withgreat success, resulting in theSouth Mine team overseeing apilot program which recom-mends that all scissor trucks,jacklegs, stopers, jumbos andBoart drills in the Ontario Di-vision be converted from oil togrease lubrication.

Steve Ball, a South Mineshift boss, said he judges the

value of the grease by the viewsof the people who use it di-rectly every day. And so farthe opinions have been posi-tive all around.

"My guys have no com-plaints with it."

Those not yet using it areanxious to do so.

He explained that it wasmore crucial that jackleg drilloperators try it first.

"If we weren't vigilant itcould cost the company a lot ofmoney. One year we found $1.3million in mistakes. If no recon-ciliation is done, the board ac-cepts our silence as acceptanceof accuracy. The errors havebeen there since day one andcontinue to crop up. Because of

Mistakes generally take theform of claims being includedin the WCB statement whichdon't meet NEER criteria. This relief, whengranted, directly influencesNEER results.

"The whole intent of NEERat the outset was to cause em-ployers to be more aggressive insafety and injury daims man-agement," said Gary. "If you'reon the rebate side of the ledger

Gary describes effective in-)ury and claims managementas a combined effort involvingthe cooperation of Occupa-tional Medicine, the UnitedSteelworkers of America, plantmanagement, the injured em-ployee and Claims Administra-tion.

"The process is as strong asthe sum of its parts," hesoid. "Ifone group isn't involved theprocess is weakened. Our suc-cesses are the result of our com-bined efforts.

"At the end of the day ourgoal is dearly the same - to getthe individual back at a suit-able time in a suitable worksituation."

Community honors food drive founderfter nine years and 35tons of food, EdgarBurton was honored

by the city and the region thismonth for initiating the IncoChristmas Employees' FoodDrive.

The Divisional Shops me-chanic received a declarationof "exemplary citizenship"from city council and a com-memorative medallion fromregional council at the city'sOct. 21 council meeting.

Edgar was quick to extendthe credit to Inco employeesand accepted the awards ontheir behalf.

Accompanied by his vifeSharon and daughter Jennifer,Edgar shook hands with Sud-bury mayor Jim Gordon, andin a speech before televisioncameras and council membersdedicated the award to his fel-low Inco employees.

"It's nice to have an awardlike this. I would like to givethis award to all the employees- those people who gave in thelast nine years and the pen-sioners who contributed. Eve-ryone worked together . . . Inever thought it would be thisbig. I'm so proud to be an Incoemployee," said Edgar.

Edgar also gives credit to histhree daughters for helpinginitiate the project. "They camehome from school and asked ifI could organize a food drive atInco. I thought this was a goodidea. I've seen the need for thisfirst-hand. I feel it is importantto help the needy, and the needkeeps gettin9 greater andgreater. I see itin SudburyandI see it all over the place."

The Inco food drive was quickto gaili momentum. In its firstyear Edgar collected 100 lbs., asum that grew each followingyear. "It only goes to show youhow Inco employees care fortheir community. Inco has beengreat towards this food drive. Idon't have to ask twice to taketime off to do this."

The 10th annual food drivewill commence in early No-vember with Edgar distribut-ing 30 wooden boxes evenly toevery Inco mine, plant and of-fice he can find, with the helpof union safety representatives.An account at the CIBC andCredit Union was opened lastyear allowing Inco pensionersto donate funds to the localfood bank.

This enthusiasm for the fooddrive earned Edgar the praiseand thanks of council. GerryMclntaggart, a coundillor andan Inco employee, presentedthe commemorative medallionfrom regional council. "He

makes regional council and citycouncil look good becausethere's 35 tons of food that wedon't have to find."

Gerry, a storeman at theCopper Cliff Warehouse, de-scribed Edgar as a "true inspi-ration to the whole commu-nity," representative of what"one person can do and howthey can impact the commu-nity - especially the needy."

In presenting the region's25th anniversary medallion,Gerry noted the rarity of suchan occasion. "It takes a veryspecial person indeed to receivesuch a medallion," he said,adding that not even he, as acouncillor, has received one.

In addition to the medal-lion, Edgar received a frameddeclaration honoring his uex.emplary citizenship" and de-scribing him as the driving forcebehind the food drive. MayorGordon, in reading the decla-ration, expressed respect andadmiration for Edgar's dedica-tion to the community.

Not only did Edgar earn therespect of both regional andcity council but that of his fam-ily. Following the presentation,Jennifer, the youngest ofEdgar's three daughters, saidshe was proud of her father'sachievement. Never did sheimagine as a young child, sucha request would net such im-pressive results. "I'm reallyproud of Dad, he kept theproject up," she said.

Jennifer found out two yearsago just how successful theemployee food drive bad be-come when her father askedher to help loud the collecteditems onto trucks for distribu-tion.

"I didn't think there wasthis much food here," she saidto her dad at the time. "I'll behere for four or five hours."

Collected food items are dis-tributed to needy familiesthroughout the region by theSalvation Army. Major LarlyBridger of the Salvation Army'sSudbuiy branch calls the an-nual effort arguably the larg-est single company employeefood drive in the country.

"I know of no other 'em-ployee' food drive of this mag-nitude anywhere in Canada,"he said. "The Inco Food Drivehas become a very major sourceof non-perishable food whichis distributed to needy familiesat Christmas but also through-out the winter months. Frankly,without this food drive, therewould be a substantial short-age of food on our shelves andit would not be an easy task toreplace it."

Pensioner's persistence pays big dividends

p ersistence pays off.Just ask Inco pensionerCharlie Quinn.

Charlie knew there wasmore money to be made atCreighton Mine's No. 3 Shaftwhen he retired from Inco in1976 as a superintendent.

His time as an active em-ployee was up.

But that didn't stop Charlie."At the 1,725-foot level, I

was convinced there was ore,"Charlie recalled in a recentinterview at his south-end cityapartment.

He let it go for a while,figuring he was done mining.

But the nagging feeling hehad left some valuable workbehind wouldn't go away.

So in the early 1980s, dur-ing the annual Inco PensionerDays event at the Caruso Club,Charlie brought up the sub-ject of the ore at No. 3 Shaftwith Menno Friesen, who wasthen superintendent and later

manager of Creighton."I said to the boss, if you

drive a little drift under thatpocket you're going to hit thatore."

Charlie was sure of it.So sure of it that he fol-

lowed up his conversation withMenno with several calls toJohn Kelly, now the OntarioDivision's Vice-President ofMining.

"John Kelly was managerof Creighton at the time,"Menno recalled. "His view wasthat 'If Charlie is this persist-ent about it - it must be worthit.'Once we saw it, we couldn'tbelieve it. This turned out to bea plum."

In fact "Charlie's ore," asMenno called it, enhancedmining production alreadyunderway at the time.

"We were mining in thearea so Charlie's ore improvedNo.3 Shaft's grade quite nicely.It was a bonus for us."

The ore was just waiting tobe mined, Menno said.

"The reason it wasn't minedthe first time (some 40 yearsago) is that it was difficult totrOm to surface. And there wasa lot of ore that was easier toget to surface. So we've got togive Charlie credit. He drewour attention to it. It had beenmore or less forgotten."

With a nickel grade of 1.7and copper grade of 1.8 in the120,000 totis that would bemined between 1983 and1984,Charlie's ore was of thesame quality as that beingmined elsewhere at Creighton.

So why was Charlie so Sure?4'It was just experience, af-

ter being the boss in that area,"said Charlie, who spent thebulk of his 40 years with Incoat Creighton until his lost fewyears working as a superin-tendent at Stobie Mine.

Charlie learned from oldblueprints that this part ofCreighton had been minedand filled in the 1920s.

The 55-degree angle of theorebody was uneven and"wavy," he noted.

So Charlie knew that themining techniques of the daywould have left pockets of oreall the way up the orebody.

They turned out to be deeppockets.

Between 1983 and 1984,Creighton miners removedabout $6 million worth of ore,said Menno.

Charlie, now 82, sold he'sglad he didn't let that orebodyslip away from him - even inretirement.

"I was also very pleasedthey took my advice and itpaid. It was satisfying."

much further along than Voisey's Bay will he

bringing new sources of nickel to market. We

remain committed to Voisey's Bay, but it's impor-

Nickel is an essential element in todays global

industrial economies, with by far its largest

use as a uajor component of stainless steel.

But like a number of indispensable metals, it's

costly to mine and process. And Inco, like

other major mining companies, must plan

carefully and many years into the future to

ensure that capacity is aligned with demand.

Inco is the largest producer of nickel in the

world. However, Inco also buys a consider-

able amount of nickel on world markets to

meet our customer's needs. A healthy global

economy is creating growing demand for

nickel, especially in Asia. In an expanding

market, Inco's goal is to remain the world's

leading nickel producer, to significantly in-

crease our own nickel production capacity,

arid to rely less on outside suppliers.

When we acquired Voisey's Bay in August

1996, it was a major step toward achieving this

goal. We must continue to evaluate other

projects in addition to Voisey's Bay which can

enable us to meet our goal. In fact, last month

Inco announced plans for our Goro project in

New Caledonia in the South Pacific, a project

that could contribute 60 million pounds, and

Inco helped to create the nickel industry in Canada

nearly 100 years ago. Today, we stand among a

handful of Canadian companies operating around

facilities and in other areas. The Project continues

to represent a significant asset for Inco. And a

significant asset for the people of Newfoundland

and Labrador, one that will generate new jobs and

training opportunities.

The Voisey's Bay Project, however, faces a

number of hurdles. These hurdles must be suc-

cessfully cleared in order for the Project to move

forward. There are, however, limits to the regula-

tory and financial burdens that it can support. To

provincial governments, indeed with the people

He knows that be-cause evaluation cardsfilled out by employeesduring last year's Get-ting to Zero program wereoverwhelmingly positivewith a clear indicationthat people want moresuch training.

This time around, the

trainers needed a way totake last year's session astep further.

They're doing that byproviding a practicaltool to employees as theywork toward the goal ofzero accidents in theworkplace.

"We're gethng peopleto look at their proce-dures and how to im-prove them. We're alsoencouraging all areas toexamine their criticaltask procedures."

Critical tasks are gen-erally defined as anywork that poses poten-tial health and safetyhazards or risks to pro-duction.

Fred Gervais, atrainer with Steelwork-ers Local 6500, said he'sglad to see Getting To Zeroback.

Last year's programshowed people wantsafety training to con-tinue to be a Divisionalfocus, said Fred.

"So we want to buildon that success."

Ceremony highlights Inco/Cambrian project

Heavy duty equip-ment mechanics,industrial me-

chanics and weldershave replaced teenagersin the hallways anddassrooms of the formerRayside-BalfourSecond-ary School in Azilda.

Inco, in a collabora-tive effort with Cam-brian College, WaS.among the first playersin an innovative plan torevitalize the formerhigh school declared sur-plus in 1994.

In 1995 the companyand the college openeda training facility at thesite described by OntarioDivision President RonAelick as "state-of-the-art."

Last month, about100 people attended anofficial re-opening of theschool, now named theTrillium Centre. To-gether with the Cam-brian College/IncoTraining Centre, the fa-cility will house a na-tional boxing centre,along with fitness, youthand conference centres.The town purchased theschool in April 1995 andthe training centre wasthe first project to sup-port the transition of thebuilding.

Both Ron and collegePresident GlennCrombie referred to thetraining centre as aworld-class facility. Aspart of the opening cer-emonies, the pairtouched on the uniqueprogram and partner-ship between the collegeand the company.Crombie explained thecollege and Inco agreedto work together to real-ize a training centre in1995, focused on a goalof providing quality edu-cation. He expressed hispride in the programstating: "This project willbenefit the community

well into the 21st cen-tury."

Ron noted that Incoand the college haveenjoyed a strong, mutu-ally beneficial relation-ship for more than 25years, Including an on-going miningtechnidanand technologist pro-gram where students re-ceive commpn coretraining. Inco is cur-rently the principaltrainer, however, overtime Cambrian wiltgradually assume deliv-ery of the training, saidRon. Inco will continueto be involved in deliver-ing specialized training,developing curriculumand program assess-ment.

The first phase of theproject was initiated inSeptember1995 with theimplementation of theheavy duty equipmentmechanics training pro-gram. The second phasewelcomed the industrialmechanics and weldersin December 1996, andtogether they occupy29,000 square feet oftraining space. To datethe program has pro-vided training to 200apprentice heavy dutymechanics and an addi-tional 400 incumbentmechanics. In addition,about 200 industrialmechanics and weldershave been trained andtested at the facility,along with eight appren-tice industrial mechan-ics and 10 Cambrian co-op students.

Ron said the jointventure continues toanswer a vital need forspecialized and up-graded training in indus-try technology.

Ontario Division completes recwith total planted s

I nco's Ontario Division putmore trees in the Sudburysoil this year than at any

other time in the company'shistory.

So what does that sayabout aerial seeding?

Plenty, says reclamationcoordinator Paul Yearwood.

"The two programs gohand in hand," he said."Aerial seeding opens up landfor us. It establishes a grasscover and in three years or sowe can go in and plant ourtrees. Experience has shownus that if the grass cover is notthere first, the frost literallypushes the seedlings out ofthe ground so there is a highmortality rate."

In its ninth season andaveraging 400 acres treatedper year, the aerial seedingprogram has gotten ahead ofthe tree planting program,admitted Paul.

"We're now playing catch-up."

And catching up led to arecord-setting 1997 with184,000 tree seedllingsplantedand a number of others do-nated to select regreeningcommittees and organiza-tions.

The busiest areas by farwere near Coniston and be-hind the Copper Cliff NorthMine, where 140,000 and122,000 tree seedlings wereplanted respectively. Another15,000 were planted near theold MacLennan Mine site,6,500 were planted at Field-ing Park in Walden and 500on company-owned lots inLittle Italy where the companyintends on returning the lotsto a natural meadowlandstate in keeping with envi-ronmental consciousness.

The sheer number of treesplanted is a testament to thecompany's commitment toland reclamation. The areasin which the trees wereplanted is proof that aesthet-ics are not the only drivingforce.

"It was always part of ouroverall plan to plant trees inthe grassed areas," said Paul."And the areas we've seededare largely remote. In recentyears we've planted trees inthe Clarabelle Mill area, theNolin watershed and aroundKelly Lake.

"Public visibility is not ouronly criteria in planting.We're trying to improve thewater quality wherever we canand establishing plant life actsas a natural filter by stoppingthe heavy metal uptake fromthe soil. It also helps in ero-sion control and other mat-ters. We find that birch andmost other deciduous treescome in on their own in theseareas because their seeds arelight and travel far. Pine seeds,on the other hand, are heavyand don't travel."

About five years ago, thecompany doubled its seedlingoutput by going from one totwo crops at its undergroundnursery at Creighton Mineand its surface greenhouse inCopper Cliff.

Today, some 240,000 treesare grown between the twosites. The January crop wasplanted this summer while themid-May crop will spend thewinter getting climatized onsurface outside the CopperCliff greenhouse.

"Coming from a stableunderground environment atCreighton to fluctuating tem-peratures the trees have to beclimatized," said Paul. "Wecontrol their exposure to sunand temperatures and let thesnow cover them where theylay dormant through the win-ter. They will be the first treesplanted in the spring of '98when we're targetting theNolin watershed betweenMurray Mine and North Mine.

"We've probably alreadyplanted two million trees as

opposed to grown andplanted," said Paul, referringto the early years when treeswere purchased. "But we'll hitthat mark next year for sure.We're just shy of it now."

"I've gone through class-room lectures on land recla-mation before. But it's goodto se it in action," saidStephen Piedn, of Ghana.

Like most of the nine stu-dents in heone-ofa-lcindpro-gram at Queen's, he wasn'there looking for future em-ployment.

He's already got a job -and a high-profile one at that.

"My job involves monitor-ing mining, health, safety andenvironment. Ill be writingpolicy for my country in goldmining, bauxite, manganese,and diamonds," said Piedn,who is with the mines depart-ment in Accra, Ghana.

The students and KathleenAnderson, director of the Min-ing and Environment Insti-tute at Queen's University inKingston, took in several pres-entations and visited the Cop-per Cliff Tailings Area on atour hosted by reclamationcoordinator Paul Yearwood.

Anderson said it's impor-tant for students in her pro-gram to see how environ men-tal concerns fit into the bigpicture of the mining indus-try.

"You can't make good en-vironmental decisions with-out undestaading all thevariables - the markets, thecommunity and the prod-ucts."

Bringing the students toInco allowed them to see howa major corporation success-fully manages environmen-tal issues.

Paul told the group thatInco is happy to share its ex-perience in environmentalland reclamation.

He told the group howearly mining methods createdthe need for regreening andhow Inco has been successfulat reclaiming environmen-tally-stressed land.

Sections of the Copper CliffTailings Area regreened some20 and 30 years ago are nowheavily treed with many pinesalready at 30 feet in height.

The students saw all stagesof the tailings area, wherenaturally-addic crushed rockfrom mines is set aside.

Having seen barren sec-tions where tailings are stillbeing deposited, those re-cently regreened where grassand shrubs have started togrow in the first year of reda-mation and areas thick-evenlush - with mature trees andvegetation, the students saidthey were impressed by Inco'swork.

"I think Inco is very re-sponsible. I want to draw onthe experience of Inco. Youare doing very well," saidMagda Cwnpos, biologist atthe University of Environmentand Energy in Costa Rico.

"In my country I'm part ofthe team that reviews envi-ronmental assessment of mm-lug. So I dedded to learn a

little bit about mining first-hand."

Paul told the group howInco has learned from dec-ades of land reclamation.

"We used to plant pinetrees early in the reclamationprocess. But we've found thatthe pine needles failing natu-rally from the trees are veryacidic and make the landacidic, which is the oppositeof what we want."

So Inco learned to plantpine trees a little later in therehabilitation process of theenvironmentally-stressed soil,he said.

Land reclamation adds tothe overall cost of producingnickel and copper, he said.

Paul explained that in aglobal market, where manynickel producers don't spendmuch - if any - money onenvironmental concerns, it'snot a level playing field.

"Because right now youhave areas of the world whereother companies don't careabout the environment andare mining for cheap."

But Inco is committed torehabilitating the environ-ment, he added.

"We're a progressive com-pany. We're forward-think-ing."

Fortunately, Paul saidmore nickel and copper-pur-chasing customers have modethe environment a priority aswell.

"Some customers won'tbuy from a company that'snot environmentally sound."

Emergency Awareness Week remindsstudents, public and employees to ACT

F or one week in earlyOctober, Ontario Divi-sion volunteers gave

ACTing tips to as many Sud-bury region residents as pos-sible.

And the message appearsto be sticking.

ACT, of course, is the acro-nym identified with Inco'sEmergency Preparedness pro-gram telling people what todo in the event of an emer-gency.

• Always go indoors.• Close all doors and win-

dows.• Turn off furnace, air con-

ditioners or other air intakes."It's an important mes-

sage," said emergency pre-paredness coordinator EllenHeale. "We're trying to relaya simple, consistent messagethat people will rememberand I believe we're success-ful."

During the 1997 Emer-gency Awareness Campaign,presentations were made to730 Grades 1 and 2 studentsand their teachers at 10 localschools, a display at the NewSudbury Centre was staffedfor 54 hours and 4,700 lettersand promotional items weremailed to local residents. Aswell, numerous locationswithin the Division held spe-cial safety presentations andemergency drills during theweek, focusing on emergencypreparedness and fire preven-

tion."When we go to schools

and talk to Grade 2 studentswho were in Grade 1 last yearthe retention for the ACT mes-sage is fantastic," said Ellen."It certainly demonstratesthat primary school studentsare very effective at retainingand relaying our message."

A large 10 foot x 20 footsign promoting the Learn NotTo Burn program was installedduring Fire Prevention Weekearlier this month. The firstsuch sign unveiled in Ontario,and the first of several slatedfor the Sudbury region, thesign is intended to raise publicawareness of a program that'sproven to save lives.

The most visible aspect ofthe neon reflective sign is aneight-foot high Sparky, theLearn Not To Burn mascot,but there in the centre is thefamiliar Inco wordmark, indi-cating the company's supportof the program.

"Learn Not To Burn is avaluable public education pro-gram with a proven trackrecord in Sudbury and acrossCanada," said Ontario Divi-sion President Ron Aelick."Our support of the signagecampaign is a natural exten-sion of our own emphasis onsafety and our existing part-nership with the Sudbury FireDepartment. For six years now,Inco has sponsored Fire Pre-vention Week in Sudburywhich runs concurrent to ourDivision's Emergency Aware-ness Week."

The Learn Not To Burn pro-gram was created in 1979 bythe U,S,-based National FireProtection Association and the

curriculum has been used inmore than 50,000 schoolsworldwide.

The curriculum was intro-duced to Sudbury elementaryschools in 1991 and by 1993all Sudbury schools and theSudbury library had the com-plete package. Registered day-care centres were providedwith the pre-school version.

Proof of the program's ef-fectiveness locally was dem-onstrated in June of 1996when Liunne St. Pierre, 7, ofGarson managed to save her-self and her dog when an out-door propane barbecue ex-ploded, shattering the patiodoors and igniting the kitchen.

As the kitchen filled withsmoke, Lianne dropped to thefloor, crawled to the front door,called her dog and left thehouse. She then went to aneighbor's house to call forhelp.

Asked about her actions,Lianne responded: "Sparkysaid that if there is smoke youmust get down low, crawl tosafety and go to your secondexit."

It's that kind of story thathad officials at the sign un-veiling praising the programand thanking those who spon-sor it;

"Corporate sponsors areessential," said Sudburymayor Jim Gordon. "We can'thave signs up all over ourcommunity without them.These are people who careabout our community andtheir employees - and thisdemonstrates that."

Sudbury MPP RickBartolucci, who was intro-duced to the program by localfirefighter and program cham-pion Fern Bourque during hisyears as an elementary schoolprincipal said what started asa dream is now a reality.

"Today, children are learn-ing to live Learn Not To Burn,not learning the program: Ifcorporate sponsors wonderwhether their dollars are be-ing used wisely, I'll tell you,children in Sudburyandacrossthis country are learning this."

Richard Morris, Chaimianof the Board with the NationalFire Protection Association,said from 1983 to today therehave been 50 documentedcases of young children whoselives were saved by actionslearned through the Learn NotTo Burn program. "And thatdoesn't even take into accountsituations that didn't developbecause kids knew what to do,"he said.

Morris, who travelled fromRichmond Hill for the unveil-ing, said he was proud to bepart of Ontario's first signlaunch.

"In my opinion, educationis our greatest weapon in pre-venting fires," he said. Eachyear in Canada up to 5,000people die in fires unnecessar-ily. We have to educate themon the dangers of fire and whatthey need to do when fire hits.

"It's wonderful to see Sud-bury doing such a wonderfuljob of teaching Learn Not ToBurn in the schools. Fire safetyeducation does save lives."

Shad grads enjoy Inco experience

From the wonders of na-ture to the marvels ofmodem technology, In-

co's latest pair of Shad Valleygraduates sampled the min-ing industry from vastly dif-ferent perspectives.

Shad Valley is a uniqueeducational experience forhigh school students offeredat different university cam-puses across Canada. The pro-gram consists of a four-weekacademic component fol-lowed by a five-week workterm at the student's sponsor-ing industry.

For Julye Huggins, 18, aGrade 13 student at CollegeNotre Dame and the daugh-ter of Stobie developmentminer John Huggins, fiveweeks in the Ontario Division'sEnvironment department ex-posed her to a different side ofmining and changed her ca-reer goals in the process.

"I found my work term veryexciting and extremely en-lightening," said Julye, whospent the academic portion ofher Shad experience at Wa-terloo University.

"It changed my views onwhat! want to do with my life.I originally wanted to be apsychiatrist, but now I'd liketo study Ecology at Guelph oreven Cambridge in England ifI can get there."

During her time at Inco,Julye was introduced to allaspects of environmental workfrom land reclamation, watersampling and ministry regu-lations to weather forecasting,waste audits and buildingaquatic habitats.

"I really enjoyed workingwith the Environment groupand was amazed by theamount of environmentalwork carried out at Inco. Mycareer goal would be to gradu-ate, come back and help re-store the Sudbury ecology -hopefully with Inco."

Tilik Dutta, 18, would alsoappreciate a future career withInco, although his five-weekforay into mining took a dis-tinctly different path.

A Grade 13 student atLasalle Secondary School andthe son of Basudev Dutta, areactor assistant in the IPC

plant at the Nickel Refinery,Tilik spent his work term map-ping the industry's future inthe Mines Research depart-ment.

There, he participated inan ongoing diamond drillautomation project and sum-

pled the latest in computersoftware, remote technologyand robotics.

"Overall my work term wasincredibly challenging andenjoyable as well as extremelyeducational," he said. "1learned as much about how

big companies like Inco arerun as I did about the technol-ogy of the mining industry.

"The people at Mines Re-search were very helpful. Evenafter putting up with all myquestions; they were alwayshappy to show me how some-thing else worked or some-times why It didn't work prop-erly. I'll miss every one of those

people and would love to goback and work at Mines Re-search some time in the fu-ture. It's not often in industrythat jobs allow you to use asmuch creativity as this depart-ment allowed me to. I thinkthat I did as much as I couldhave but I wish my work termhad been longer so I couldhave gotten more done."

He finished first in theInco tour after playing inthe last and soggiest eventheld at the Idylwylde Golfand Country Club at the endof the summer.

"I won't miss rainy dayslike that," he chuckled in arecent interview.

Adam's score, taken fromhis best six events of the to-tal seven on the Inco tour,placed him ahead of rivalsJude McConnell of Sault Ste.Marie and Kyle Whiteheadof North Bay in the Juniorscategory for 17 and 18 yearolds.

Even outside of the Incogolf events, Adam was un-beatable.

He was No. 1 in competi-tion among 19 Sudbury re-gional high schools.

"I had a good battle inhigh school competition thisyear. It felt good to win."

After he graduates fromGrade 12 at Lo-Ellen ParkSecondary School this year,he will continue pursuing hisgolf career.

Gunsmithing a passion for pensioner

foot at the age of 13 bethe trigger for a life-long passion of fixingand building sportingweapons?

It was for GeorgeWalli.

By the time he hadrepaired the faultytrigger on the gun thatinjured his foot, he hadtaken his first step tobecoming a gunsmithand a craftsman.

From match andflintlock guns of yoreto modern guns andbows, George, 58, aformer senior analystwith Central ProcessTechnology who re-tired in 1992, has col-lected, fixed, built andfired these pieces.Gunsmithing is one ofGeorge's hobbies, andhe takes great care andprecision in all thework he does. It is themating f the woodand meta' that createsa precise sportingweapon," he says.

Working with woodholds great appeal forGeorge. it takes muchdevotion and patience totransform a piece of wal-nut, maple or cherry intothe finely crafted stockof a gun. it involves pre-cision cutting, shapingand hand-rubbed oil fin-ishes. Choosing qualitywood is crucial for a well-crafted stock. Thefiddleback grain" of

woods also has its owndurability and uniqueappearance. Georgeemphasizes that thechoice of wood is impor-tant because it must beable to resist weather androt.

Working with metalproduces a preciselymade weapon that willbe completed with a rust-blueing process. "Rust-blueing gives a depth tothe metal's shine, notjust a sheen," explainsGeorge. This will alsogive the gun the highestresistance to rust. It isthe best blueing methodin the world, and hotchemicals, hours of boil-

ing and hand polishingare essential in perfect-ing this method, he says.

Every detail of thewood and steel is care-fully attended to and it isthis atttention to detailthat makes George's art-istly unique. He also uti-lizes natural materialssuch as moose horn topersonalize the butt plateof certain pieces he workson.

George's collection ofhand-made weapons ishis personal treasure.Among his many prizepieces, George has madea shotgun/rifle combina-tion piece that allows forexcellent close and farrange accuracy. Thiscombination piece lendsitself well to huntinglarger game.

He has also trans-formed military pieces tosporting pieces by cus-tomizing the calibre anddeveloping a cartridge.George cuts the chamberdeeper in order to makea magnum rifle and thistransforms a militaryweapon into a service-
