Editors’ Note

A dream is defined as a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person's mind during sleep. It is a reflection of one‟s state of mind, ambition and fears. We just don't dream when we are asleep, we dream every moment. We dream for a better world, better livelihood. Irrespective of what the dream is, we are inspired by them and they slowly become our aspirations.

Dreams are our secret ambitions. Dreams are the ones that act as our escape routes from our boring and mundane lives. They let us discover ourselves, more importantly the way we see ourselves.

I have a dream is the title of the famous speech by Martin Luther

king Jr. The socio economic situation of today‟s United states of America is a outcome of this speech. With out this speech, his dream for the future America would never have been fulfilled. Eve-ryone has a dream, but do you have a speech to back it up? If not Toastmasters‟ is here to help you. Step into one of our meeting and see your dreams materializing.

Area Governor’s Note I dream of rainbows, Bright in the sky,

I dream of lightning, together we cry,

I dream of flowers, I feel such delight,

I dream of spiders, and I scream with fright,

Dream awhile with me and together we'll see,

Not all dreams are bad, so dream along with me.

Are the lines from the Poem “Dream a While with me” by Sydney

Bell

How many times have we heard people say something similar to "I've always dreamt of being a writer, actor”, or "I'd like to learn playing an instrument, learn a language, but I really don't have the time"? Have we wondered how to turn our dreams into reality?

Rex Jaeschke, in his blog lists the 4 stages one must cross in order to turn our dreams into reality.

First we should visualize the things that we dream of as if they were happening.

Once we visualize the dream, we need to talk to others who are subject matter experts in the field for a constructive feedback.

The third stage involves writing down enough information to allow us to decide whether the idea is really viable.

The last and final stage is to stick to your core ideas - but also

leave room for change during implementation.

A thread that weaves all these steps together is a rare trait called PERSISTENCE. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th American President said:

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.

Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent;

Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb;

Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."

I‟m on my way to realizing my dreams… Are you?

Sudha Rajesh is the

governor of Area G1. In this

article she talks about how

her first visit to a

toastmaster meeting

impacted her.

Sudha Rajesh

Governor of Area G1 I still remember the day I walked into CTM. I saw the speakers de-liver their speech. At the end of the meeting, with a chip on my

shoulder, I asked TM Ravi Bhaskaran sir, if I could become a men-tor. I said I wanted to help people with public speaking. He replied I must become a mentee first. I didn‟t understand then. A year and a half later, I realized how much I have learnt and how much I owe to CTM. Today, I want to share what I‟ve learnt. Toastmasters offers learning to everyone who walks in through its doors. It is amazing that you evolve as a great speaker and a great leader. No matter which level one is in when one enters, there is learning for everyone. If you are struggling to speak, you must speak often to overcome that problem. If you can speak fairly well, you must speak often, to speak really well. If you can speak really well, then you must learn the art of „right‟.

Art of „right‟? Saying the right words to the right person, at the right time is cer-tainly an art. Add another element, „saying the right amount of words‟ to it and it becomes an enviable art.

One who masters that art becomes a great leader. Everyone im-proves with every speech, every contest and every educational ses-sion. No one remains the same; everyone grows, everyone evolves. One should not compare themselves with others; that is the lesson I learnt. Rather, one should compare themselves with one‟s own self from a year ago.

Every contest brings out the best in you. The experience either makes you a better speaker or a better leader. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong during contests. But despite being through all these times of testing, the organizers do a fantastic job and no one notices the glitches. People join the club as a member. But later they become a family

member and don‟t just remain club friends. They go to great lengths for simple favours. They immediately come to your help at the most troubling times and are always there to celebrate every little achievement or every milestone. In short, the system itself is impeccable and beneficial to one and

all. I do not know if Ralph Smedley envisioned it like this or if

Toastmasters function this way in Western countries, but in India,

especially in our lovely Chennai, Toastmasters is a platform that

gives a lot back to people than what they can give back to it.

President’s Note This 31st is no ordinary 31st for me. I feel more than privileged to celebrate my New Year party with a director of one of the largest

banks in the world. If there is one thing that got me the invite from this person, it is inarguably the camaraderie between us. I feel more than obliged to say that the speaking ability and the confi-dence that Infosys Toastmasters, Chennai has given me has result-ed in attaining this camaraderie. An increase in self-confidence, a growth in visibility online and offline and an expansion in knowledgebase & connections is something you will get if you walk into Infosys Toastmasters Chennai club. In an attempt to make the members of Infosys Toastmasters Chennai as Incredibly Talented Communicators, the following four steps were taken.

Members were encouraged to be conscious about saying “um”

and other speech snags that come across as unprofessional. Even though these are low-stake situations, they help change

the member‟s default speech into something that works in any setting.

Members were encouraged to record their speech and listen to it over and over during rehearsals. This helped them to get a con-trol over their pace and pause.

Members were encouraged to observe a speaker they really

liked. As the meetings were recorded and uploaded on YouTube, members were able to observe and find what their favourite speakers did well.

Area M1‟s table topic contestant Subhadip Banik, the VPE of

ITC, shared his opinion about the role players‟ performance af-ter each meeting. By evaluating every second of the stage time of every member, the members pin pointedly focussed on their areas of improvement and they sure have become better com-

municators.

ITC was delighted to witness TM Divya Maiyalagan clinch the se-cond runner up position in the Area M1‟s International Humor Speech Contest. It was wonderful to see TM Divya Maiyalagan get-ting in touch with the seasoned speakers at ITC before the contest and within just 21 days of her tenure with ITC, she brought the tro-phy to ITC, her home club. Having bagged such laurels and having added 8 new members in less than 80 days, ITC is confident that the newly adopted steps have helped improve its members to be more articulate than before.

When are you going to walk into ITC?

Carrot Halwa

“Amma, how long will these carrots take to cook? “! I called out to

my mother with such impatience from the kitchen for the 9th time. She came running in to take a look at the carrot halwa (dessert) that I was trying to make for the school fest and wore a visible frown on her face as I knew it was only 5minutes since I had put it to cook and was expecting the outcome instantly!

I was 11 years old back then and never realized that cooking could be an interesting hobby! The halwa at the school fest turned out to be an inspiration for me to pursue cooking. Suddenly I was inter-ested in the cookery shows on air, flipped through magazines for interesting dishes and scouted for recipe cooks at the book store. I diligently used to sit and cut out the recipes that I spotted in the weekend newspapers and carefully stashed them in my „Recipe

Box‟ (an antique square spice box which I adopted for my hobby). Soon it became a routine for me to experiment with a new dish whenever there was an occasion. I went a step ahead and used to make small eats like muffins and vegetable rolls and take it to school as a sample for feedback. My parents knew I was obsessed with my new found hobby over the years and finally one day I told them I want to pursue a catering course after my 12th exams and take that up as a profession!

My decision was not welcome and thanks to the endless counselling sessions that I underwent from the whole family. I was told that hobbies were just a way to engage yourself while you have ample time at your disposal and trying to eke a living out of it would be disastrous!

My dream of starting my own restaurant slowly came crumbling down and I found myself in an engineering course soon after my exams. Whenever my friends would taste the “kheer” (sweet milk dish), cold coffee or just the plain dosa (pan cake) and potato they would exclaim “I don‟t understand why you never took this up as a profession!” and I would question myself every time why I dint

have the courage to talk my way out then.

It never is too late to pursue what you want in life. And today, if you have been reading this and wondering what you have been do-ing in this world of coding and networking then it‟s time to prioritize your needs.

“Samskruthi”, is the name that comes to my mind whenever I see my dream restaurant materialize. And I know, for a fact, that it will soon dish out the age old recipes of Indian cuisine!

My dream has come true ‘I have a dream’… this phrase comes with lots of passion, hope and planning. But the phrase ‘My dream has come true’ comes

with a feeling of victory, happiness and satisfaction. However, the voyage between those two indulges our dedication, commitment and patience towards our dream.

Dr. Abdul Kalam said „Dream is not that thing which you see while you‟re sleeping, but it is something that doesn‟t let you sleep‟. This

happened to me during my 4th year of B.Tech. Impressed by the infrastructure and the training process, I was passionate to work with Infosys. Solving a lot of Shakuntala Devi‟s puzzles (as sug-gested in general) and going through the company‟s profile for a month, I finally attended the interview and got placed. As soon as I entered the Mysore campus, looking at the GEC, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and felt „my dream has come true‟.

Well this wasn‟t it. I soon started dreaming for something else. Dreams keep piling up and they drive us throughout our life.

The hurdles that we cross, the risks that we take, the failures we face and the experiences we gain while chasing our dream are worth the ultimate Joy we receive towards the end.

So let‟s keep dreaming and experience the life we‟ve been reward-

ed with.

Lucy History! What is history? Who is Lucy? Every damn body in this planet has a history. What is your history? I have a dream to real-

ize, alas, I too have a history to forget. Yes! Histories defined from Lucy. My dream is to let go off those histories compiled and dumped with histrionics and hazardous behavior. Yes! Lucy did this to all! Lucy is to blame.

Do you call your evolution from monkeys as history? Well! I don‟t,

definitely. What type of history is that to call you “the evolved” when you butchered the Neanderthals and their kinds? I think Lucy knew. Your path to what you are now is strewn and harpooned with bloodied veins and broken bones. Survival of the fittest is definitely not my forte, if it is to survive by killing and hunting. Lucy started this. Lucy is the mother of history.

I hate Lucy! Lucy started everything that has happened till now, that which is happening and that which will. Lucy was the first, of the so called Homo sapiens, to walk erect with two legs and two hands in some remote region in Africa. She started this quest for killing which runs unabated to the very core of every humans now living on this planet. Well! I dream for a not-this-kind Lucy. I want-ed that Lucy who was affable with her group. I wanted that Lucy who didn‟t leave her troupe and walked away triggering a cata-strophic calamity of boring the humans.

One Lucy set off a race! There are lot more waiting to push every-body and everything into the chasm of casualties and the abyss of tragedies. No more Lucy. No more mishaps.

I dream of not wanting more from Lucy and wanting more butter-

flies.

I too had a love story I too had a love story, complete yet incomplete. It was love- at-first-sight. It is still

fresh in my mind as if it happened yesterday and the happy memories still flash on

my retina and I feel a sense of DEJA-VU.

With the setting sun, amidst the freezing cold, temperature vacillating between 0 to 5

degrees Celsius and dense fog, we encountered each other for the first time in an ap-

parel store at 06:07 pm 16th Dec 2010 at sector 17 Chandigarh. I stood immobile, so

did „he‟. Deflected from „him‟, a gush of cold air touched my face and I knew being

with „him‟ meant everything to me. „He‟ was still looking at me from the glass win-

dow. I knew we both would look adorable together and the mere imagination of our

pleasant future together would widen my lips into a gummy smile. Every time I

would visit sector 17, I would find „him‟ there staring at me from the same glass win-

dow.

I had accepted that my dream would remain a dream. But they say,‟ When you want

something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it‟. My father noticed me

stealing glances at „him‟. My overwhelming emotions said everything. In the next

four days I had to leave for Infosys Mysore. So I decided not to hide. Dad asked me,

“Do you like „him‟?” I was awe-stuck for a moment. My heart was beating faster than

it ever had. He held my hand and took me near „him‟. For the first time ever, I had

had such a closer look at love-of-my-life, the impeccable Black Leather ,super soft,

zipped Calvin Klein woolen overcoat with mao-collar. I donned „it‟ with tears and

remained in „his‟ arms for next two hours.

My father had to part with a dowry of Rs7000 to make this love-of-my-life lawfully

mine. IT WAS MINE; MY DREAM WAS NO MORE A DREAM. Then came the

day of separation. We met for one last time on 23rd Jan 2011. The chasm of separa-

tion has inflicted a wound, which finds no cure but REUNION. I wish to meet „him‟

soon and this time not to depart before we enjoy each others‟ company fully (read

long winter season).

A dream ride It was Sunday morning with some hustle-bustle outside the door. Women were chatting in the common veranda, hawkers were com-

ing in announcing their arrival at the top of their voice and children were howling as they ran. This broke Jai‟s late sleep-in, who lazily dragged his legs out of his bed on the floor and ran towards his fa-ther sitting on the floor reading the newspaper with his glasses on.

“Pappa Pappa, I saw a dream”. Father nods and replies meekly “Hmmm” continuing his glance on the newspaper.

“Pappa I wanna fly to Disney world and click a photo with Mickey Mouse”, This time father looks out of the newspaper and stares at those half sleepy eyes.

“You will have time for all that, but now you should study for your semester exams”

Parents are our ring masters, demanding and instructing us on how to behave and what to do in our early stage of life. Father under-stood that it was his son‟s insistence to go on his School Picnic, the expenses of which were beyond the father‟s capacity. Jai could not understand this and went furious back to his bed and never ever asked his dad for school picnics again.

Days, years and decades passed and Jai grows to become the MD of Online Shopping portal marrying a Social activist and having a beautiful daughter all settled in Australia. “Jai, Tamanna has a Dis-ney world outing next month, please give her permission to go, it‟s her Dream place”, says Jai‟s wife. Jai, being the obedient husband and an able father replies, “Of course, why not?”

He quickly, picked up his smartphone, dialed 9122XXXXXXXX and said, “Dad, Can we go to Disney world?”

I have a dream, my friends have a dream, my enemies have a

dream, and my reader too has a dream. But our parents? They are

My dream Dreams have become a vision, a goal to our youth fraternity rather than just an imaginary world. Gone are the days, when dreams

were just a memory to cherish. Everyone possesses a dream, and that has been the driving and motivating factor to push oneself everyday. One such dream is buying a house or building a house.

Yes, this is the ultimate dream for almost all middle class families in our country. But unfortunately, owing to steep rise in population, the available residential areas in the city are all occupied. Hence the

realtors, go in search for lands outside the city, leaving agriculture lands sore victims. I am not suggesting that we should stop dream-ing about building or buying a house, rather just think why should cultivable land be made a victim? What made a farmer sell his land? What made him take this wretched decision? The answer, of course, is „Poverty‟.

We talk for hours about the government not taking enough measures to improve this ailment and also propose that agricultural lands are going to be history, but have we asked ourselves what we have done about that? Never. We always chose to be spectators, taking privilege in criticizing. Well, I asked the same question to myself. A thought hit me, why can‟t I help farmers retain them? The demon of negativity echoed inside me, „Being a single man, what can you do?‟ I had only one answer „Let me try‟. Then I found out a way to do that and made it my dream. Providing financial support to the farmers and sharing the profit. This is also a perfect investment plan. I am not that financially acquainted to do this right now. But when I am, I will make this dream come true and inhibit building a house or apartment by annihilating a farmer‟s dream.

I will enforce a paradigm shift.

Y should one have a dream “I have a dream” is a clichéd phrase that has always intrigued me. Most self-help books, philosophical books on success have made an

extravagant usage of this phrase. This has sent me into a thought process of „Does having a dream really help?‟ To find an answer, I introspected. I realised I did have dreams but I somehow felt it hard to make it a reality like many others. So I concluded dreaming doesn‟t help one to succeed in life or rather become an achiever. Change is the only constant and hence my conclusion did change. Mind gets convinced with a proof rather than by just words preached by an unknown face. When I watched “NDTV‟s - India‟s 25 greatest Global living legends” honoured by the President of In-dia, the recipients were asked to share their message to the world. Ninety per cent of them mentioned “HAVE A DREAM”. Nothing can contradict a statement which had got consensus by people who had reached the zenith in their respective fields. I was convinced that I should have a dream. But how do I realise my dream?

An anecdote helped me find an answer to my second question. A young boy who wished to become a renowned guitarist walked on the streets of New York with a guitar slung on his shoulder. He was on his way to participate in a music show. In order to find his way he went to a cop and asked him,” How do I get to the “Carnegie

Hall”?” The cop looked at him and said “PRACTISE”. Though having a dream is the first essential ingredient to succeed, that alone wouldn‟t suffice. Have a dream, practise and tackle the risks involved head on and make the dream a reality. All of us have the liberty to dream. Dream anything! Let‟s Dream big, practise even bigger and become giants in whatever we had dreamt of!

Prof. Arya A pall of gloom prevailed in the room as men and women holding prestigious positions in the corporate sector gathered in large num-

bers in the hall. As family members clad in white kurtas and sarees occupied the front row, the celebration began. An evening it was, to celebrate the life of Prof.Pyarelal Arya, who was no more with us in this world as he had breathed his last on the 1st of December, 2013.

For a gentleman who had dedicated his career towards the welfare of an institute which was built not just with brick and mortar but with his own sweat and blood, it meant more than mere words to describe his personality.

Prof.Arya, an IIM-A graduate and employed with BHEL in the HR department, was bestowed with the responsibility of establishing a

B school in the premises of BHEL Trichy. He accepted it with glee and decided to relinquish his association with BHEL for the develop-ment of the institute. He became the first Director of Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Tiruchirapalli (BIM) with major challenges surrounding the institute, but not for long. He overcame all of them with a smile.

He had a dream. A dream of making the institute one of the best B schools in the country and ensure 100% placements throughout its journey. He stood outside reputed organizations knocking on their doors and never took no for an answer. Thanks to his efforts and determination, the legacy still continues and the institute‟s cent percent placement record is still maintained without any glitches. Prof.Arya‟s dream did come true. The institute is now one of the leading B schools in the country and is also ranked one of the best in South India.

There was an air of grief which surrounded the hall as his family unveiled his portrait. Tears welled up in all our eyes as it was hard to believe that Prof.Arya was no more. But it remains a fact that he will continue to live in spirit in all our lives and in all our endeavors.

Dreams indeed do come true, but only when we believe in our-selves. Prof.Arya believed in himself and he was, is and will contin-ue to remain a superhero in all our hearts.

Dream. Discover. Dr Kalam, once said “Dream, Dream Dream. Dreams transform into thoughts and thoughts result in action.” As children, even though

we didn‟t have the mental capacity to grasp this concept, we would inadvertently use this same principle/ploy to get what we desired. Most of us used to dream of toys and would bug our parents to get a similar one for us. Incase our demands weren‟t fulfilled we would try different ways like going on hunger strike, constant cribbing, crying or maudlin and the best one would be the promise of becom-ing a good boy/girl. More often than not, our parents acceded to our demands and we would be jubilant at our accomplishment. As a child we had no fear, shame or inhibitions. Having achieved one dream we would set forth for the next and this cycle continued till our adolescent age. What changed, was our way of achieving our dreams, and the dreams itself. From toys we moved on to plays/dramas/games/art/academics etc. Most of us used to dream of do-ing something miraculous in our field of interest. Some of us worked hard while some took their parents/relatives help in getting their dreams fulfilled. But in the end, we did achieve it. Though some of us achieved it partially but it never stopped us from dreaming big.

Now lets us take a moment and try to analyze our life. All of a sud-

den we have stopped dreaming and if not stopped then don‟t dare to dream big. Why has there been such a sudden change. Are we not confident enough of converting those dreams into reality? Are we afraid of failure? etc etc. There could be many such questions but the probable answer to all those questions I believe is that we have stopped working hard. It may difficult to accept but deep down all of us knows that it is the truth. We just never tried too

much. We started to give up. We never used to give up as a child then why now. I do understand that the path is difficult but isn‟t it worth fighting for. Complacency has entrenched our system to such an extent that we remain content in the minimal despite possessing the talent to attain much. Let us throw away all our fears and im-bibe once again the child like desire and passion for success. As beautifully put up by H. Jackson Brown Jr “Twenty years from now

you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Piece of Toast ITC decided to give a taste of Toastmastering to the larger crowd of employees in Infosys Mahindra city, a program segment that bore

spectacular potential. We are no further from acceptance when we say “We are not what we are if not for our mentors”. Wheels to the anointed heels, ITC organized a speech contest for non-toastmasters, who were mentored by dedicated toastmasters of the club. The contest had two rounds. The first round being a script writing contest, the employees of the company were asked to send in a script, written on a subject of their own choice. Eight scripts were short listed and the corresponding writers were invited to the meeting. In the meeting, the eight chosen writers were divided and assigned four mentors through a semi-autonomous system of pick-ing chits. Under the assistance of these mentors, the scripts were converted, organized, re-structured and tried into an effective speech and the participants were introduced and trained in the vari-ous nuances of delivering a speech.

The contest was set on the lines of an International speech contest

with a contest master, contestant briefing, role players and anony-

mous judges. The speakers were at their best and delivering with

their hearts content, reflecting qualities of a distinctly vigorous

speaker. At the end of the contest, the winners were declared with

much celebration. It was certainly a delightful feeling to see the

room filled with thrilled guests who had turned up to encourage

their contestant friends. Overall, it was a great show with some

brilliant speeches that served its purpose by not only addressing

the intrinsic vitality that resided within every single contender but

also reaching out to the audience introducing ideals, facts and con-

cepts that were new to them.

As is always, there is a significant volume of learning at Infosys

Toastmasters, Chennai

ITC 75, a dream run In 2012, a small seed of Infosys toastmasters, Chennai was sown by few visionary

Infosians. Little then anyone knew about the wonders this club would go on to

achieve. In the last 18 months, under the aegis of highly dedicated and committed

ITC members, the ITC seed has grown on to take the shape of a sprawling tree,

spreading its branches in the form of achievements and presence all over Chennai. It

has proved its mettle in the Toastmaster fraternity by achieving the “Golden Gavel”

in the just a year. The Club also has a representative in the district office, TM Arun

Kumar, the governor of Area M1. Not only has ITC produced an Area level ISC win-

ner but its members have also contributed immensely to ovation 2013. So far in its

journey ITC has achieved many milestones and its 75th meeting was an addition to

the list of milestones.

A huge crowd comprising of Members, Toastmasters from the Fraternity and Guests,

turned out at the Piraeus hall in the hope of witnessing a stellar meeting, and got more

than what they expected .To propel us to dream big and work relentlessly to make it

come true, TMOD Sandeep Kumar themed the 75th meeting “I have dream”. SAA-

Ramalingam Sivasailam introduced the Presiding Officer Subhadip Banik who after

declaring the meeting open welcomed the guests and dignitaries. Sandeep‟s interac-

tive style garnered the audience attention and his articulation skill ensured that the

meeting segued into different segment effortlessly. The prepared speech segment

witnessed 3 power packed high voltage performances. The first speech was by Distin-

guished Toastmaster Rajeev Tiger Nambiar who gave a CC#4 ”You are an excep-

tion”. The second was by the Club president Jagannath Panigrahi giving his CC#9

“It‟s possible”, motivated the audience never to quit and ultimately walked away with

Best Speaker Ribbon for displaying an exemplary articulation skill. Last but not the

least Area M1 Governor – Arun Kumar enlightened the audience of his experiences

and challenges of chairing Ovation 2013, Team Social Media in his High Perfor-

mance Leadership Speech. The 3 speakers left the audience in awe but the excitement

and fun of ITC special meeting had just begun. Post tea, the Table topic segment

headed by Vice President Public Relation Vidiya Prasanth, saw guests and Toastmas-

ter participating with full zeal and élan. The General Evaluator Sri Hari heading the

Evaluation segment did a stupendous job in providing a detailed report of the meet-

ing. Palani Sankar Gopala Krishnan yet again walked away with the Best Evaluator

Ribbon for his critical Evaluation report. The meeting also witnessed the launch of

club Newletter “ITC‟s IMPRINT 4” by Rajeev Nambiar. However the most exciting

and exhilarating event was the launch of ITC‟s promotional video – “Talk to Us”.

The video gave a glimpse of what makes ITC the best Club and why ITC members

love what they do. We at ITC take this moment to thank all the toastmasters for the

support and love that you have shown us in the past 18 months. “Dream is not that

which you see while sleeping it is something that does not let you sleep” quoted Ab-

dul Kalam, We have a dream for the club and its members, a simple one that keeps us

awake and alive, that we should be a better club for the next milestone meeting.
