Ideas are a hugely important first step in kitchen design, and for many this is the part where the most fun can be had. There are no rules, and endless possibilities. Think big, think outside the box, as while many ideas won’t make the cut, the ones that do stick will become your kitchen’s blueprint. At this point, the sky’s the limit but there are still a few practical steps you can take to make the most of your efforts.

• Search online and in magazines for things you like – which could be as abstract as a colour combination, or as specific as a particular tap.

• Create a mood board of everything you collect. You’ll start to see a theme emerging pretty quickly.

• Keep your mood board handy at all times. You’ll need to refer to it often throughout the process, and your original inspiration will help guide your choices.

If you’re wanting to move electrical and plumbing points, consult a plumber and electrician early on.

design tipsWhen you’re thinking big, it’s easy to overlook the details. Here are a few tips to make sure you get the most out of your new kitchen.

• Be clear on your look and feel before you start choosing specific products and materials. It’s easy to get lost in the design process, so keep your reference pictures handy and refer to them as you go.

• Map out exactly where things will go e.g. cutlery, plastic containers and electric mixers so you know you have a place for everything.

• Make space for things in the area where you will need to use them. For example, make sure your pots will fit in storage close to the cook top.

• You can never have too much bench space. Make sure you have enough either side of your sink and stove top for food preparation and cooking.

• Think about what is non-negotiable when it comes to the look and feel of your kitchen. Functionality will often win out, so hold on to those elements that will make your new space your dream kitchen.

• Grab some masking tape and mark out your ideas in your existing kitchen. Outline your favourite options on the floor and take your new kitchen for a test drive.

If you’re planning to have cabinets opposite each other in your kitchen, be sure to check that the width between them allows for the doors to open fully at the same time. We’d recommend around 1200mm if space permits.

Cabinets should never be flush to the wall as the door or drawer won’t have enough room to open fully. Leave a 50mm clearance between the wall and cabinet to prevent this problem.

It’s best to keep kitchen drawers away from corners, as when placed here they obstruct and bang into the adjacent cabinet.

door & drawer frontsFinishes for door and drawer fronts range from the bold to the understated, and are affordable without compromising on quality. All are stylish, hard-working and practical, to keep your kitchen looking smart year after year.

foilFoil doors are a great alternative to painted doors when it comes to kitchen cabinetry. They are harder wearing, easier to clean and more affordable.

They provide the look of painted cabinets but you’ll never find yourself needing to re-coat or touch up as foil doors are covered with heat-fused laminate that completely covers the door. They have no unsightly joins or edges to chip and peel, just a smooth surface with an even colour. All colours are the same price.

special order coloursIf you're after a more unique look, all are a woodgrain finish called 'puregrain' apart from snowdrift which is just a plain white called 'naturale'. These colours are available by special order.

foil profileChoosing a profile door can add character to your kitchen.

The ‘Country’ door profile, offers a textured rustic look. The ‘Shaker’ door profile gives that traditional panelled look. Both profiles use the same heat-fused laminate as the standard foil door, giving you a seamless finish. These doors are available by Special Order. The ‘Cottage’ door is a perfect blend of the two.


benchtopsBenchtops are the signature piece in any kitchen. What you choose will depend on how much you use your kitchen and the look you are after, so we offer customisable options to give you complete freedom.

With an extensive range of décors and textures, varying widths, lengths and thickness, anything’s possible. Come into store to talk through your choices – and it’s not just what’s on the shelf. Selected stores can access even more variety at your request.

pre-cut laminateDuropal pre-cut benchtops are a standard 30mm thick. Standard lengths and depths include L: 1520mm x D: 600mm; L: 3050mm x D: 600mm; L: 2400mm x D: 900mm.

duropal quadraDuropal Quadra laminate benchtops are 39mm thick with a 3mm tight formed radius front profile. These benchtops have a built in polyurethane drip edge to catch any water run-off to help protect your cabinetry. Quadra benchtops are resistant to not only very high temperatures and stains from everyday use, but also to high impact and scratching.

We’re here to help, so we will arrange delivery as well as anything else you need to complete your kitchen: from flooring to lights and tiles, finance options, a special order item or installation if you’d prefer not to install yourself.

You can install an Impressions kitchen yourself or you can have your kitchen installed by an installer. A kitchen installer will fit your cabinetry and benchtop, but additional trades such as plumbing and electrical may be required.
