Dear Parents and Guardians Coronavirus While media and public commentary in relation to Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to raise concerns for many in our community, public health authorities are advising that the current risk remains low in WA. However, as the health and wellbeing of our students and staff remain our highest priority, we continue to monitor strict hygiene practices to ensure the safest possible environment for our whole school community. Thank you to all the families who take precautionary health measures and keep their children home when they are unwell, remembering that some of our community are more vulnerable to illnesses than others. In keeping with Department of Health advice, CEWA has announced that all school-related international travel, with the exception of travel to the USA, Canada and New Zealand (providing that this travel does not go through Asia), is not to proceed until further notice. This advice applies to all students and education sector staff across WA. Accordingly, the Year Six Rottnest Camp will still go ahead and we have factored the current situation into our Camp Risk management Plan. As we continue to respond to COVID-19 in our community, please be assured that the Department of Education, CEWA and the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia will continue to respond as a collaborative team to advice from the WA Department of Health and provide updated advice to schools and staff as appropriate. New Families We welcome Taylah Daniels (4M), Jesse Daniels (2D), Rory Daniels (1R), Kain Vipin (2J) Joaquin Vipin (KS) and their families to St Joseph’s. We trust you will soon feel a part of the St Joseph’s school community. Ash Wednesday/ Beginning of School Year Mass Last Wednesday we celebrated our Beginning of Year and Ash Wednesday Mass. Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of the Church’s season of Lent when we remind ourselves of God’s self-sacrificing love and look forward to participating in Jesus’ victory on Resurrection Sunday - Easter. Thank you to Fr Noe for celebrating the Mass and to Mrs Stapleton for organising the Liturgy. Once again Mr Mills provided excellent music with the students singing beautifully. Well done to the student leaders who read so well. We were extremely impressed with the courage and concentration all students displayed during the spectacular lightning, thunder and downpour that began our Mass. Students Councillors Our Student Councillors for 2020 were presented with their badges at our last Assembly. The Councillors represent other students at meetings and work with the staff to make St Joseph’s a place where the students have a voice. They are encouraged to assist in certain decision making processes and school activities. Congratulations to the following students:

Prayer

Loving Father, we have put our hope in Jesus Christ who was transfigured before the apostles. We believe that we, too, will share in that same glory. Help us

prepare for that time by our actions in this life. Open our eyes to the seed within us waiting to grow and blossom into the good works that Jesus calls us to do. Help us to use this time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to come to a greater understanding and a determination to follow the call we have been given both

as individuals and as a community. This we ask in Jesus’ name and in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Amen

School Fees Please remember that term one fee payments are due tomorrow. Parents are invited to make an appointment with Mrs Olsen if there is a concern regarding payment of the account. Also a reminder to families who have a Family Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card that in order for your discount to be applied to your school fee account, it is imperative that a copy of your card is presented to the school office as soon as possible. Unfortunately, due to funding restrictions, rebates are unable to be processed after 30 June 2020. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Bunbury Catholic College Visit - 9.00am On Tuesday, 17 March - 9.00am representatives from Bunbury Catholic College will be visiting St Joseph’s to speak to the Year Five and Six students about secondary schooling at BCC. Parents interested in knowing more about the College are most welcome to attend. School Fun Run This year we will again be having our School Fun Run from 2.15pm till 2.45pm on St Joseph’s Day, Thursday, 19 March. Last year it was a huge success and this year we have added colour to the mix for some extra excitement. Additional information explaining how your children can participate and enjoy this fundraising event is on page five. Sustainability and the Environment Many of you are aware that we are making the move to being more sustainable in all our practices across the school. We have a very enthusiastic Environment Committee and students who wish to move forward with minimising the rubbish we produce as a school. Thanks to Mr Presser, who is a master at securing government grants, we have purchased bins that assist us in sorting the rubbish the way many councils already do around the country. On page seven is comprehensive explanation from the Committee of how we will be proceeding. This is a great initiative and a fantastic way to make a difference in God’s green earth. Parent/Teacher Interviews This year our Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on our Pupil Free Day, Friday, 27 March. You will be able to book a meeting time online that best suits your needs, though it will be “first in, best dressed”. Information regarding the booking process will be emailed to families next Tuesday, 10 March. Each class has a large number of interviews to schedule so it is important to be on time for your 15 minute appointment. Should you require extra time, please feel free to schedule an extra meeting time with your child’s teacher. Year Six Camp Next week the Year Six students will be enjoying an exciting time at camp on Rottnest Island. They will depart on Tuesday morning and are very excited about their forthcoming experience. Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to assist the teaching staff who are spending the week with the students. The Year Six camp is one of the highlights of our students’ time at St Joseph’s. Busy Bee Thank you to the dads who joined Mr Presser on Saturday morning to help with some odd jobs around the school grounds: Justin Miller, Abdel Serna, Graham Benbow, Allan Gault, Greg Rolfe and Ben Ugle. Goal posts were painted, various areas secured and tyres drilled for extra drainage. We appreciate you giving up time on a long weekend to support our school. Mr Presser is hoping to make this a once-a-term event. Discussing News and Current Events As your child gets older, they become more aware of news and current events. Discussing news and current events can enrich your child’s understanding of the world and help you monitor whether they are concerned about what they are hearing. We can help children think realistically and foster empathy by encouraging them to ask questions. Questions also help them develop oral fluency when discussing various social issues. Such questions could be: Why do you think this happened?

How do you think the people involved will feel or be affected?

Is it fair?

Why do you think people behave that way?

What do you think will happen next?

How could the problem be fixed?

MJR: Welcoming God moments We can often miss God moments if we expect them to be something out of the ordinary. It’s great when we stop to remind ourselves that we participate in God moments when we give or receive a smile, help or encourage someone, or simply acknowledge their presence. Jesus enjoys spreading his message of hope through the ordinary moments and interactions of every day. In the story of Noah, he received hope from an ordinary bird bringing back an ordinary olive leaf. You might be the person whom Jesus uses to bring hope to someone at just the right moment. Mrs Olsen Acting Principal Student Safety and Car Par Reminders Parents, we kindly ask you not to park in the yellow staff car park bays in the mornings. In the afternoons, please remember that, students are to be collected by an adult from the lawn near the Year One classrooms. Students are not permitted to walk across the carpark to parents waiting in cars. Please also remember that there is no parking in the Loading Zones. Please also only park in the Disability car park if you have the required permit. If other adults are collecting your children, please alert them to our car parking rules. Kindy and Preprimary parents are asked to use the carpark near the Kindy classrooms. Your cooperation is appreciated as the car park guidelines are in place to keep all children safe. Thank you for your support. Dear Parents/Guardians

In the effort to become a more sustainable school and in order to work together better to reduce our contributions to landfill we will be implementing some changes in the coming weeks.

Last year the environmental committee worked on developing a policy and culture within our school to find ways to reduce our waste and manage it better.

With the help of a successful Waste Wise grant, St Joseph’s has purchased new colour coded and waste specific bins for both inside and outside of the classrooms, which we expect to arrive within the next week or two.

The colours have been selected to reflect the system already in place in homes and councils.

Green – organics FOGO (if it was alive once)

Yellow – recyclables and co-mingle (paper, clean plastics with numbers …)

Red – landfill (hoping to reduce this drastically by correctly choosing one of the above choices)

To join other organisations already undertaking this initiative and in an effort to educate our whole school community, the following changes will occur to make the transition to this new improved system:

Eating areas outside – a green fogo bin will be provided for organic waste, food scraps, canteen paper bags,

paper towel etc.

Items such as plastic wrappers and yoghurt containers will need to be returned home in the lunchbox and we would encourage you as a family to sort them into the appropriate bins at home. Students are welcome to wash out their yoghurt containers before they take them home– or a cheaper and much more sustainable option is to buy large tubs of yoghurt and bring in smaller washable containers. The aim is to REDUCE our single use plastic in the first instance. Some items may fit into two categories and it will take time to educate everyone on the correct choices. For example, a piece of paper could be Fogo because it comes from a tree or could go into recyclables (co-mingle) as well. The single largest problem we will face will be contamination by placing the incorrect items in the incorrect bin; e.g. if a paper bag from the canteen is placed in the recycle bin but has melted cheese on it, this then becomes contaminated and it goes to landfill.

We are aware that this will be a learning curve and we will all be working together to help each other make the right choices. There will be clear and colour-coded signs near the bins and around the school. To begin with we would like to run some workshops to help our school community transition to the new system. We will advertise these workshops closer to their date. In addition, we will have student eco monitors helping at breaks to help us all make the right choices.

As mentioned above, the biggest change for parents and carers will be the fact that any plastics, this includes cling wrap, chip packets, squeezy yoghurts and the like, will be returned home as we do not have the correct facilities to sort soft plastics and if students are not washing out their recyclable plastics properly then this will contaminate the co-mingle system. The following sites may be helpful if you are looking to reduce single plastic use:

https://www.hellogreen.com.au/collections/lunch-gear

https://www.biome.com.au/274-lunch-boxes

https://ecowarehouse.com.au/ (local Bunbury Store)

https://litterfreeliving.com.au/product-category/reuseable-lunch-range/

“On average a school aged child using a disposable lunch generates 3 pieces of litter per day, which equates to 30kg of waste per year.” This quote came from the litterfree living website. If we all could make some small changes, we could make the world a safer and cleaner place to live. We hope that you will support us over the coming weeks as these changes take place.

Please do not hesitate to contact us through the office with questions or concerns.
