In honour of the Parkash Utsav of Guru Nanak Dev ji, our school will be holding a special Guru Nanak Dev ji Gurpurab celebration on Thurs-day, November 2, 2017 at 5:30-8:00 pm. On this day, there will be no classes and we ask that the students attend the celebration with their families that evening. This celebration in-cludes Kirtan and student performances, fol-lowed by Lungar. In order to make this cele-bration a success, we kindly request volunteers to assist with preparation and transportation of Lungar from the Gurdwara Sahib to the KSC. Please contact the school office if you are available to volunteer at the Gurdwara. Note- If your child is participating in Kirtan performances on Guru Nanak Dev ji’s Gurpu-rab celebration or Gurdwara performances, please make sure that your child is wearing white bana, navy blue head covering/dastaar/patka and navy blue chunni for girls. Alter-native clothing is not appropriate when per-forming. Please contact the office if you have any questions. See you at the Celebration!

Grade 3 Seva project
This year the grade 3 classes have decided to work with Youth Unlimited again.
Youth Unlimited is an organization that has designed a program called Operation
Backpack. Youth Unlimited provides services to those young individuals that are
homeless in Calgary.
Operation Backpack is a program that runs every December.
It is a program that allows Calgary residents to become more involved in creating
a memorable Christmas for a street kid, as well as assisting in meeting some of
their basic needs.
The backpacks are filled with encouraging notes or cards, pair of warm socks,
warm gloves, shampoo and soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, brush or comb, deo-
dorant stick, chocolate or treat, small first aid kit, 5 adult Calgary transit tickets,
$5 fast food gift certificate, $5 donation (covers their Christmas dinner). Optional
gifts-sewing kit, small blanket, movie pass, grocery gift certifi-
cate, etc.
This is how you can help! On November 20th each grade level
will be given a backpack. The teachers will help create a list
and assign items to bring in. The backpacks will be collected on
Thursday, December 8th. They will then be handed out to the
youth ages 12-24 before Christmas. We appreciate any help we
can get!
On Remembrance Day, we recognize the millions of people who
lost their lives in war fighting for freedom. Remembrance Day is
observed by countries all over the world on November 11th each
year. This year Khalsa School will have their annual
Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 9,
2017 at 10:30am. We welcome our parents to par-
ticipate in this ceremony.

for any reason, please call the school office and let
the secretary know. The school phone number is

Bana Day
On Fridays, students are permit-
ted to wear Bana instead of their
school uniform. This is optional;
however, if students choose not
to wear Bana, they must wear
their uniform. Fridays are not
casual dress days!! Only
the last Friday of the
month is a Causal Day.
We are excited to start our home reading program in Division 1 in No-
vember. Your child will regularly bring home a book in their book bag
to practice their reading with you. It will be the responsibility of the
child to bring back their book to receive a new book. We highly en-
courage you to read with your child on a daily basis. Happy Reading!
The theme of October was Fall/ Harvest and Halloween and the students enjoyed reflect-ing on their fun filled Halloween! November is a month of remembrance, students are encouraged to reflect on what they are thankful for and think about how they can help their community! In November, students will learn about the significance of Remembrance Day and continue to learn about the sights, sounds and signs of autumn. Students will be introduced to different Community Helpers and about their role in the Community. In Literacy, students will continue to learn new letter sounds and begin rec-ognizing initial letter sounds in words. In Math, students will continue to sort objects based on a single attribute, extending and building patterns. Students will be introduced to Habit 2: “Begin with the End in Mind” making goals to complete a task. Just a reminder to continue to practice letter sounds with your child and read the alphabet po-ems in the Treasure Books. In addition, home reading will be sent home early November. Please look through and read the package carefully. We are looking forward to another ex-citing month in kindergarten! Kind Regards, Ms. Chidley and Ms. Kaur
In literacy, we finished reading the novel, Charlotte’s Web. We created book reviews and made
comparisons with the movie using Venn-diagrams. Now, we are exploring the features of descriptive texts. We are reading vari-
ous non-fiction texts including The Inuksuk. We will begin to write our own descriptive text about our favourite creepy crawlies
and other topics. We cannot wait to share! In math, our focus moved from patterns to numbers. We learned how to recall and
write ordinal numbers. We reviewed skip-counting and discovered how to make thoughtful estimates. We used manipulatives
(ten-base and one blocks) to represent different numbers as well as addition and subtraction equations. Now, we are learning
about the values and appearances of Canadian coins. We are finishing our unit on Small Crawling and Flying Animals in Science.
Throughout the month, we have learned about the appearance, habitat and diet of insects, Arachnids, centipedes, slugs and snails,
and worms. We have explored their impact on their environment and on humans. Our focus in Social Studies has been on the
early settlements of Metaghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit. We have learned about how these communities have evolved from rural to
urban areas.

Grade 2
Grade 1 Happy Autumn! These first few months of Grade 1 have been spent on learning new reading and math skills.
Students are finally in their routine and following classroom expectations. It’s amazing to see the growth in the first few months as students
begin to become more confident. In Language Arts, we will continue to focus on learning new sight words and short vowel sounds. Dolch
Words will be sent home for students to practice. We have also been learning the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. When
reading these stories, we will be focusing on predicting and asking questions about what we read. Students are encouraged to read 20
minutes each night to build on their comprehension and decoding skills. In math, we are continuing to learn all about numbers. Counting,
recognizing and writing numbers 1-100. We have started to read and write number words 1-10 and will learn numbers before and after. Ad-
dition and subtractions skills will also be taught this month. In Science we have been learning all about the season Fall. Students have also
learned the primary and secondary colors in our Colors unit. Students have been identifying colours in a variety of natural and manufactured
objects, and comparing and contrasting colours using terms lighter than, darker than, and brighter than. In
Social, students are learning the benefits and responsibilities of living in a community. We are also examining
what helps us to recognize different groups or communities, and what are our responsibilities and rights at
home and school. Grade 1 Team: Mrs. Hundal and Mrs. Kaur

In Literacy, we are working super hard on our writing skills. Our sentences are becoming
much more interesting and creative. We are doing our best to include lots of details and colorful
words. We are also learning how to describe settings and characters. We are sharpening our skills in
grammar and focusing on punctuation, different types of sentences, as well as common, proper, singu-
lar and plural nouns. We are just about done The BFG (novel study). We will be starting our Descrip-
tive writing unit. Descriptive writing provides information by classifying or describing the way things
are. Our goal is to generate details by extending on a simple idea. We will do this by using descriptive
text organizers such as the “5 W’s” ( Who, What, Where, When and Why).
In math students have completed the Patterns unit and are now working on Numbers to 1000. Here
students will compare, represent, and estimate numbers to 1000, as well as skip count numbers using
multiples of 3, 4, 5, 10, 25, and 100.
In social studies students have explored the coast, mountains, and rainforest of Peru learning about
different people groups, the Peruvian customs and traditions and even sampling a little taste of Peru.
Soon students will be traveling to Ukraine.

In November, we will be focusing
on Habit 2 which is Begin
with the End in Mind - Think
about how you want something
to turn out before you start it.
Goal setting is an important skill
for success. Set a goal. Then,
break it down into small manage-
able pieces. A great example is a
puzzle. You study the picture.
Then, you sort pieces. Perhaps
you’ll do the edge first. Next, you may
find all the pieces of one color, and so
on step by-step until it is complete.
