Community Garden Fundraiser –Friday, April 5th at Fowles As mentioned in previous newsletters, our school is working in tandem with the Avenel Action Group to establish a community garden. The Fowles organisation, in an act of great community support, are holding a fundraising event on Friday April 5 th to raise funds for our garden project. Fowles will be opening their new event venue to the Avenel community on from 5pm to 6.30pm on Friday, April 5th. Food and drinks will be provided free of charge – the only tariff is a donation to our community garden fund. I would like to thank Fowles Wine for their support of our garden project and I look forward to seeing a great turn out on the evening in support of this project. Annual Report In the coming weeks we will be publishing our Annual Report for 2018. Every school in Victoria publishes an Annual Report as part of its accountability framework and the report provides a very concise summary of a school’s performance in the preceding year. In 2018, we continued to be a high performing school. In six out of the eight student outcomes categories measured by the report, we achieved a “higher” result than schools which are considered our statistically similar schools. We also exceeded all of the state benchmarks for “high learning gain” as measured by the growth in students NAPLAN results from Grades 3 to Grade 5. I would like to recognise the focused and committed teaching and learning culture which we have at Avenel Primary School and also recognise the culture of continual improvement which all of our staff members exhibit. Grade 5/6 Canberra Camp: Yesterday, our Grade 5/6 students headed off to Canberra for four days of educational experiences. Over the course of four days, they will experience some great educational activities including visiting the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House and the Australian Electoral Office. Other great experiences include visits to the Australian Institute of Sport and Questacon. Speaking to the teachers last night, the first day of the camp has gone very well and our students have been loving all of the experiences to this point. Many thanks to Mrs Malone, Ms Cotter and Fiona Allen for the work they have put into organising and staffing this camp. Ride to School Morning Yesterday, students received information on our Ride to School event which will be taking place on the last day of term. For the past seven years, this event has been a huge success with participation growing each year. One of the highlights of the event is the ceremonial lap of our school oval which we conduct with all of our riders when they arrive at school. Last year, we had close to one hundred students and parents on bikes and it would be wonderful to see us repeat this result. Our staff will also be cooking pancakes so it is sure to make for an exciting start to the last day of term. All the best, Neil

For maths investigation over the last few weeks we looked at how much it would cost for Mr O to

buy all the students in the school a choc chip cookie. We had to research where to buy them from, how much they would cost and how many students in the school.

Once all our information was gathered, we submitted our report to Mr O. He must have liked our report as he purchased the cookies for us to hand out to all the students. Thanks Mr O! Indiana, Oisin and Jonty.

The Preps have started learning about

Recount Writing. On Tuesday, we read

The Little Red Hen and then we went to the staffroom to make some bread! We needed to use new vocabulary to describe our role in the bread making process.
