What is computer?Computer is programmable machine which can convert input into output after processing data. Since a sequence of operations can be readily changed, the computer can solve more than one kind of problem.There are three basic parts of computer which perform specific task.Control Unit:This part of computer integrate with all other parts and control all the activities of computer system.Arithmetic Logic Unit: This unit of computer performs the functions related to mathematics.Memory Unit:This part of computer performs function of storing data.

Applications in petroleum engineering We are living in the world of science of technology, as the Pace of life has increased the new things are invented. Nowadays computer has become basic need of our education system, in every field medical, engineering and arts computers are widely used. We can not neglect importance of computer in today’s world. Nowadays many fields works of engineering can not be done without software and softwares need Computer to get operated.

Using Handheld Computers in Field operations

Handheld computers are being used to improve efficiency in oil industry field operations. Field data is recorded electronically with the handheld unit rather than being written on a paper report. After the data is collected, it is uploaded into a PC database in the field office where timely reports and data analysis are produced that support the decision-making process in the field. Handheld computers play a critical role in making these efficiency improvements possible. 5

Software applicationsNowadays Petroleum industry relies on many softwares and these softwares can only be operated via computers.In most oil companies worldwide the petroleum engineering broadly concentrates on maximizing cost-effective production from the field. A number of core software programs are part of its daily routine to assess this effectiveness and efficiency of oil and gas production.

Petroleum engineering softwares

Petrel:  This is software that provides an integrated solution from exploration to production. It allows user to interpret seismic data, perform well correlation, build reservoir models and visualize simulation results.

Prosper: This software  can assist the production or reservoir engineer to predict tubing and pipeline hydraulics and temperatures with accuracy and speed.

Eclipse: This software is produced by Schlumberger and models the movement of fluids in the oil or gas reservoir and works out what percentage of the hydrocarbons could economically be produced.

Making class rooms effectiveWe are living in century of science &

technology so teaching methodology has been changed,  Students & teachers use multimedia presentations, clips, images, etc. with the help of computers instead of  monotonous blackboard teaching.

In This way, the power of students to remember or recollect the taught concepts increases as the classroom learning becomes interesting.

Providing online education:Computers not only strengthen the traditional education system but also provide a new mode of pursuing educational courses and degrees. This mode is called as online training mode of education. Through this mode a student can pursue a course, degree or training sitting at home with the help of a computer and internet connection.

MS wordMicrosoft Word is a program, designed to create professional-quality documents. Word helps us to organize and write our documents more efficiently. Word is used for creating documents such as letters, brochures, learning activities, tests, quizzes and students' homework assignments. Ms word is widely used in petroleum engineering as we are more concerned with written material. Final year thesis and research papers are designed in MS word.

MS ExcelMicrosoft Excel is a spreadsheet program used to store and retrieve numerical data in a grid format of columns and rows. Excel is ideal for entering, calculating and analyzing company data such as sales figures, sales taxes or commissions.In petroleum industry Excel is used for creating spreadsheets and for plotting graphs. Most times, tables and results of experiments are designed in Microsoft Excel.

Microsoft PowerPointPowerPoint is a visual and graphical application, primarily used for creating presentations. With PowerPoint, we can create, view, and present slide shows that combine text, shapes, pictures, graphs, animation, charts, videos, and much more.It is used to create electronic presentations consisting of a series of separate pages or slides. Microsoft PowerPoint is used to deliver presentations in national & international seminars.
