INTRODUCTION

This process will show you how to prep and export a model from SketchUp into Minecraft. Thisprocess involves several programs and many steps. It looks complicated, but if you follow ever stepcarefully you'll be able to do this.

This guide is for a Mac only. This process can be done on a PC if you are familiar with the DOScommand prompt.

Step 1 — Make a new folder

For this to work we're going to want to make a fresh folder where we can save Binvox, and the fileswe want to convert

Doing this will keep things clean and organized, and prevent us from having to type in longcommands into Terminal later on.

Step 2

First you're going to need to godownload Binvox. You can get ithere.

Just scroll down the page and lookfor the Mac version.

Download Binvox into the folder thatwe made in the previous step.

Step 3 — Get MC Edit

MC Edit is a Minecraft worlds editor.It's free for anyone to use on Macand PC.

As of this writing their latest version2.0 was not working. We havesuccessfully been using the legacyversion which can be found righthere

Step 4 — Change model units

When you create your model for Minecraft you need to make sure it's the right size.

Each Minecraft block is 1 meter by 1 meter. Make sure you model something that's large enough towork properly in Minecraft or you will get a single block if you bring in something too small. Forinformation on modeling in different unites in SketchUp check here.

To change SketchUp to Meters, just start a new model and go to Window>Model Info>Units. Fromthere use the drop downs to change to decimal meters just like the screenshot here.

Step 5 — Create a SketchUp model

Go into SketchUp and build a modelas you normally would

You can also get models from 3Dwarehouse

Note that the test model I have hereis 30meters x 30 meters. (You cansee Lisanne is really small in thepicture)

Don't worry about coloring ortexturing your models. Those don'tcome into Minecraft when youimport. You get to choose the blocktype later.

Step 6 — Export as an OBJ

You'll need SketchUp pro for this step because it has theexporters that we need. In this case weneed OBJ export.

Select only the stuff you want to export. In this case I want the step box, but not Lisanne (SorryLissanne!) You can learn more about selecting things here

Click up options and make sure the options look like the picture here.

Be sure to save your OBJ file in the same directory as Binvox, this will make things a lot easierlater.

Step 7 — Get setup

Schematic files are models thatMinecraft reads. Here we are goingto use Binvox to turn our OBJ into aSCHEMATIC file.

First on your Mac load Terminal. Thefastest way to get there is to hitCOMMAND+SPACEBAR and theSpotlight search will pop up. Fromthere start typing "Terminal" andclick on it when it comes up.

Next open up the folder where youhave your exported OBJ and Binvox

Put these on your desktop so youcan see Terminal, the open Binvoxfolder, and the Binvox folder itself.This will make the next few stepseasier.

Step 8 — Change directory

Click on the Terminal window and type in "cd" followed by a single space. The space is important.Don't press enter.

"cd" stands for "change directory"

drag the folder from your desktop (this is the folder that contains Binvox and your exported OBJfile) right on the to the Terminal window.

This will fill in the location of the directory we're changing to. Press enter.

When you press enter nothing visual happens.

Step 9 — Unlock Binvox

Binvox needs to be unlocked so youcan run it properly.

In the terminal window type this:"chmod 755 binvox"

When you type this in nothing visualwill happen

Step 10 — Process your model

Now that Binvox is unlocked, we're going to run it on your model.

Note that the number "152" in the command below can be replaced with a Minecraft block numberto change what kind of block is used when you bring your model into Minecraft. You can find theblock list here.

TNT is block number 46 :)

In terminal, type in this command: ./binvox -fit -t schematic -d 100 -bi 152 "THE NAME OF YOURFILE.obj"

If everything works you'll see a bunch of tech jargon fly by on the Terminal window, and in yourBinvox folder you should now see a file with a ".schematic" extension on it.

Step 11 — Get your model into your Minecraft world

First make sure you have a Minecraft world that you want to bring your model into.

CLOSE Minecraft and launch MC Edit

When MC edit first opens you can click on a few of your most recent worlds you have worked on,or you can go browse for a world you have saved elsewhere.

Use the WASD and the JIKL keys on your keyboard to move and look around. Shift and Spacebarwill raise and lower the view. Fly around until you're roughly in the spot where you want to placeyour model.

Step 12 — Load your model in

In the MC Edit window there is something that looks a bit like a crane. Click that.

Find the directory you saved Binvox and your export in. If you did it on the desktop, look under"Users" then find your name, then find desktop. Click on the folder you created

When you click on your folder, you won't see any files. To see them you have to change the filetype from "b02" to "Schematic". Do that by clicking on the file type and selecting "schematic".

Once you do that, find your exported file and double click it to load it into your Minecraft world.

Step 13 — Place the model in MC Edit

This can be a little tricky. You'll probably have to try a few times to get the placement right.

Click on the terrain somewhere to place your model down. Don't worry about if it's not facing theright way.

Once you place it, use the Rotate, Mirror and Flip buttons to turn it so it's facing the right way.

Finally, click and hold on the "NUDGE" button and use the WASD, Shift, and Spacebar to dial inexactly where you want it placed.

You can also use the "Scale Factor" here to make your model bigger or smaller.

Once you get your model where you want it click on "Import"

Step 14 — Save it and go play!

Last thing you need to do is go to Menu>Save to save the new modifications to your world

Make sure you exit MC Edit after you do this.

Now go to Minecraft and check it out!
