Australian Curriculum in NSW

While many other states in Australia have chosen to implement the Australian curriculum already, the NSW government has delayed the implementation in NSW to 2013, and only for Maths, English, Science and History in Years 7 and 9.

Australian Curriculum in NSW

In NSW we will not be implementing the Australia Curriculum directly. For each subject, the Board of Studies will examine the curriculum developed by ACARA and modify it to suit the students and teachers of NSW. These documents will be known as the new NSW syllabus’ for the Australian Curriculum.

ACARA develops curriculum for each

subject.

NSW

Board of Studies rewrites each

subject to create a NSW syllabus

Where are we up to?

At this point the Board of Studies has completed English, Maths, Science and History 7-10 and these are ready for implementation next year. It is anticipated that the development of many of the new subjects will take place throughout this year, and that implementation is likely to begin for these other subjects in 2015 or 2016.

What does this mean for me?• Within the school context this means reviewing and rewriting programs

for the new syllabus implementation.• For those subjects ready to be implemented:

– Opportunities for greater involvement in professional associations as they work to develop new resources.

– Opportunities to develop closer networks with other teachers to share resources.

• For those subjects still under development:– There are opportunities to be involved in consultation groups with

ACARA for those subjects still being developed.– There are opportunities to contribute to writing NSW syllabus

documents with the BOS.• For experienced staff/content specialists, there will be opportunities

outside of teaching for work related to resource development at a wide range of organisations, educational institutions and companies.
