About the Programme:
Health and safety in the workplace are the number one concern of most businesses, yet
still deaths and injuries occur. Occupational Health and Safety management System
(OHSMS) is a framework that allows an organization to consistently identify and control
its health and safety risks, reduce the potential for incidents, help achieve compliance
with health and safety legislation and continually improve its performance. OHSAS 18001
was being used as the Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management System
(OHSMS) the world over for certification, in the absence of any ISO Standard for the same.
ISO 45001 Standard on OHSMS has been published in March 2018. ISO 45001 sets the
minimum standard of practice to protect employees worldwide. The Standard specifies
requirements for an Occupational Health and Safety Management System, with guidance
for its use, to enable an organization to proactively improve its OH&S performance in
preventing injury and ill-health. With the publication of ISO 45001, certifications to
OHSAS 18001, will no longer be valid after three years from the date of publication of ISO
45001.
NABCB is organizing one-day appreciation programmes on ISO 45001:2018 on
Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OH&SMS) at Chennai, New Delhi
and Mumbai to give a head start to organizations who wish to implement ISO 45001 or
migrate to ISO 45001 from OHSAS 18001.
What are the advantages?
The adoption of an OH&S management system is intended to enable an organization to
provide safe and healthy workplaces, prevent work-related injury and ill health, and
continually improve its OH&S performance. Advantages include a safer workplace,
improved employee morale, reduced costs, stakeholder confidence, and more.

About : Quality Council of India (QCI)
The Quality Council of India (QCI) is a pioneering experiment of the Government of India
in setting up organizations in partnership with the Indian industry. Since 1992 a need
had been felt for the establishment of an accreditation body in the country to establish
internationally acceptable mechanism for recognition of conformity assessment results.
As regards laboratories, an accreditation body under the Ministry of Science &
Technology was already functioning. A committee which included various interested
ministries and stakeholders including industries was established to make suitable
recommendations. The work was coordinated by the then Department of Industries
(Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion) and the recommendations were
submitted to the Cabinet in 1996. Key recommendations included the Need for
establishing an organization jointly by the Government and the industry and the need for
the organization to be self-sustaining and be away from the government.
Accepting the recommendations, the Cabinet Committee decided to set up Quality Council
of India as a non-profit autonomous society registered under Societies Registration Act
XXI of 1860 to establish an accreditation structure in the country and to spread quality
movement in India by undertaking a National Quality Campaign.
