Learning Objectives• Critique a video vignette of a complex simulation

session using computerized mannequins

• Identify key preparation and materials needed for

faculty to successfully implement complex

simulation sessions

• Critique an SBIRT session video vignette

• Review differences between the materials

needed

• Discuss staff logistics, costs and operational

considerations that surround simulation activities

WISER Staffing

• WISER consists of 16 full time employees

• Employed by either the University of Pittsburgh

or UPMC

• Operationally-6, Administrative-4, IT-4,

Curriculum-1 and a full time medical director

• Need to maintain balance of operational staff

(i.e. downtime, course set up, satellites and how

many assigned to a course)

How does WISER cost out a new

course?

Page 11: Implementing a Simulation Session: Key Considerationsireta.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Neft-ODonnell-Battista.pdf · Implementing a Simulation Session: Key Considerations Michael

How does WISER cost out a new

course?• Have all individuals that want to create a

course fill out a course creation form.

– Tells us who gets the bill, how many times

they plan on running the course, how many

participants they expect, what type of

simulation (i.e. partial task trainers,

mannequins, standardized patients) and who

is the target audience

Page 12: Implementing a Simulation Session: Key Considerationsireta.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Neft-ODonnell-Battista.pdf · Implementing a Simulation Session: Key Considerations Michael

How does WISER cost out a new

course?

• Create a Course Cost Sheet• Take all the expenses that are involved in the

course i.e. course creation time, simulation

specialists, variable costs, CME

• Take the sum of those expenses and divide by the

expected amount of participants per course to

decide a per person fee

• Make sure you don’t forget hidden costs
