We spend a part of the first class discussing the fallacy of “presentism,”through which the values, mores and conventions of the present day areusedtojudge,almostalwaysharshlyandsanctimoniously,ourpredecessors.Will Durant wrote of the tendency for humankind, at each point of themodernera,toimaginethathistoryisastraightlineupward,leadingtothe“us”ofthecurrentday.Weseemespeciallyvulnerabletothisconceitthese

days.

TheEuropeanpeoplesofacenturyagofellhardfortheerrorsofpresentism.Theywere riding the tideof a centuryof stunningeconomic improvementand technological advances, every bit as transformational as those of thepast few decades. Between 1815 and 1914, Britain’s per capita grossdomesticproductgrewnearlythreetimesasfastasithadintheprecedingcentury.Thesteamengine,thesewingmachine,therailroad,electricity,thetelegraph, the telephone, the airplane and so many more breakthroughsconvinced the people of 1914 that a Golden Age had arrived, in which abenevolent science was on its way to conquering distance, wantand thetediumofdailywork.

Moreover, humanity was not only wealthier but so very much wiser. Thebarbarity of war was surely a thing of the past, left behind by the moremature,enlightenedandsophisticatedpeopleof the time.Arunawaybestseller, absorbed by elites across the continent, was Norman Angell’s “The

Great Illusion,” which asserted that the “interdependent” industrializednationswould see and avoid the stupidity of fighting, or that if a war didstart,theobviouseconomicdamagewouldleadthemtoputaquickstoptoit. A few years later, 20millionwere dead,most at the hands ofmachineguns, aerial bombs and other recent products of scientific progress, andperhaps 50 million more by a war spawned influenza their “modern”

medicineprovedpowerlesstostop.

Evenworse,thecollapseoftheirgoldenageusheredinanewdarkageovermuchoftheglobe, inwhichtotalitarianssuchasHitler,Stalin,MaoandPolPotmurderedtensofmillionsandenslavedthesurvivorswithintheirreach.It is presentism’s smug folly to assume that we in the present day are

superiorintellectuallyandmorallyandthatthepasthasnothingtoteachus.

More time spent trying to understand and empathize with those whostruggledwith harder problems than oursmight enable us to learn fromtheir accomplishments as well as their mistakes, and look a little lessabsurdtooursuccessorswhentheir“present”comes.

Presentism’s principal tributaries are a lack of knowledge and a deficientcapacity for empathy. One of today’s premier historians has written that“historicalilliteracyisthenewnormal.”Howdismallytruethatis.Thelistofbasic facts today’s Americans don’t know is too embarrassing anddiscouraging to repeat.The fundamental civicconceptsofwhichmajoritiesofbothyoungandoldareignorantisequallyappalling.

Thequalityofempathy,theabilitytodiscernandunderstandthefeelingsofothers,wasdenotedbyAdamSmithasthemostdistinctiveofhumantraits.Evidenceofitserosioniseverywherethesedays,intheburgeoningcultural
