● Cumulative emotional, physical, psychological, etc. harm of individuals, groups or generations caused by traumatic experience(s) or event(s)

○ Trauma affects our social and emotional intelligence○ Even individuals not directly target can experience the effects of the events○ Results in adaptive behaviors both positive & negative (resilience or cycle of

abuse)

*Other associated terms: transgenerational trauma, intergenerational trauma, vicarious trauma, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, (hurt people, hurt people...violent people are not born they are breed, etc.)

Historical TraumaDr. Maria Yellow Horse Brave Heart, PhD, 1980’s

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Shan Dr. Brave Heart termed this as a way to develop understanding of why life for many Native Americans is not fulfilling “the American Dream” There is research that shows historical trauma is correlated with infant mortality and early death (Book - Medical Apartheid by Harriet A. Washington, Office of Minority Health has statistics) Blacks/African Americans were considered property and treated as such (1865 - 1965) Jim Crow, Convict Leasing, Sharecropping, Ku Klux Klan, Lynching

Historical Trauma: Slavery

Epigenetics

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Shan Studies conducted on historically traumatic events like slavery and the holocaust shows that trauma from ancestors are passed down from generation to generation through DNA. African American people carry over 100 years of slavery experiences encoded in their DNA through epigenetic changes.

Present Day Trauma

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Juana About 1 in 1,000 black men and boys in America can expect to die at the hands of police, according to a new analysis of deaths involving law enforcement officers. That makes them 2.5 times more likely than white men and boys to die during an encounter with cops.

Race- Related Stress

● Psychological distress associated with experiences of

racism.

● Effects of ethnic group membership on the quality of

life.

*Other associated terms: historical trauma response

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Shan Due to the heightened awareness of police brutality, the political climate, and the many killings of minorities across the country the past few years have brought increased attention to racial/ethnic tensions in the United States.  Race related stress- refers to the psychological distress associated with experiences of racism.

Race Related Stressors

• Stereotype threat- The fear one’s actions will confirm existing stereotypes about a person’s self-identified racial/ethnic group.

• Imposter Phenomenon- when people of color internalize the negative racial stereotypes about the capabilities of their own racial/ethnic group in comparison to the white majority.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
SHAN Stereotype threat- People of color who may experience this stereotype may then start to believe that their peers do not regard them as individuals, but as representatives of their racial/ethnic group. This stereotype threat can have a negative effect on your work or academic performance. Imposter Phenomenon- This is when you do not believe that you are as intellect and capable as your peers. This believe will encourage you to dismiss any academic or career related accomplishments. “ I only got this job because they needed to fill a perceived quota” or “ I know got this job because of the networking that I did”. When you experience imposter phenomenon they may live in constant fear of the “truth” being discovered by their peers so they watch a mask of confidence. (doctors, lawyers, teachers)

Other Race Related Stressors▪ What are Microaggressions? a statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of

indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority.

▪ Microaggressions are subtle, yet pervasive acts of racism(or the like); these can be brief remarks, vague insults, or even non-verbal exchanges

▪ Examples

• Statements: “Why are you so loud?”

• Actions: Not sitting next to a black person or crossing the street, locking your doors, or clutching your bag when you see a black person

Racial Battle Fatigue (RBF)

▪ The physical and psychological toll of racialized micro-aggressions; particularly when navigating personal and professional spaces that have historically favored white people. These conditions emerged from constantly facing racially dismissive, demeaning, insensitive and/or hostile racial environments and individuals.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Juana Coined in the early 2000s by U of Utah researcher William A. Smith - while studying how racialized microaggressions — relatively inconspicuous, but potent, degradation of marginalized people — affected black students at predominantly white colleges and universities. His paper, titled “Challenging Racial Battle Fatigue,” concluded that students of African descent constantly worry, have trouble concentrating, become fatigued, and develop headaches when navigating personal and professional spaces that have historically favored white people. https://thinkprogress.org/black-people-arent-making-things-up-the-science-behind-racial-battle-fatigue-9726fcebc938/

Oppression

● The state of being subject to unjust treatment or control● Prejudice + Power.

○ The systematic targeting or marginalization of one social group by a more powerful social group for the social, economic, and political benefit of the more powerful social group.

○ Oppression can manifest through racism, classim, sexism, heterosexim, and other isms.

○ Only the dominant group can be oppressive (i.e. racist, classist, etc.) because only the dominant group has the power.

○ Oppression is the losing end of privilege (Allen Johnson).

Types of Oppression• Internalized Oppression: The ideation that persons begin to believe the

lies that the oppressors tell them about their status as inferior such as that they are the problem and they are less worthy.

• Structural/Systemic Oppression: is oppression which is built in structures which facilitate how some organization, society or the like works• Laws, customs, and practices that systematically produce inequities to maintain a

hierarchy• Institutional Oppression: is the systematic mistreatment of people

within a social identity group, supported and enforced by the society and its institutions, solely based on the person's membership in the social identity group

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Juana Internalized Oppression: A black woman bleaching her skin. Structural/ Systematic Oppression: Employers asking for criminal history or credit score - systematic way of not hiring blacks because they tend to have lower credit scores and higher rate of criminal history (due to other forms of systemic oppression) Institutional Oppression: Black persons and more specifically black males are the highest incarcerated individuals in the world disproportionately. Once they have been convicted of a felony that are no longer allowed to vote.
