Robert is an eighty-two year old widower with vascular dementia living in his own home. Before retirement he had been a successful accountant of which he is very proud.

Robert has no children and as a result has found himself very isolated and lonely since his wife passed away seven years ago. He found that he was forgetful, particularly about more recent events. He was also having problems with his communication such as finding the right words and repeating sentences. There was a decline in his problem solving ability, which was impacting on his life - especially his capacity to manage his financial affairs. As a result, demand notices started to arrive for unpaid household bills. Robert was very embarrassed and responded by denying that anything was wrong. He would become argumentative in an attempt to demonstrate that he was in control.

We spent time with Robert getting to know him as a person and listening to what was important to him.

It was very clear that he wanted to be involved in any decisions about his finances and retain as much control as possible. We supported this by gathering together all the information he needed, exploring and ensuring that he understood all his options so that he could make an informed decision and make his views and wishes known. The advocate facilitated the negotiations between utility companies and Robert, and as a result direct debits were set up.

This was very empowering for Robert as the advocate only expressed what he wanted to say. Robert had made the decisions, and this was hugely important for him in order to feel that he still had a voice and an input into issues that affect his life. Robert is now a lot happier, and as a result is accessing community based social projects where he has made a number of friends.

Social enterprise is a business that gives its profits to charity or reinvests them for community benefit.“ “
