It is an honor to do the work we do every day at the Children & Family Resource Center. This year, we have helped save a little boy’s eyesight and another little boy’s hearing. We have seen families face and overcome unbelievable odds and overbearing life situations to create more stable and nurturing homes. We’ve helped single moms get their education so they can provide for their families. We’ve trained child care providers to become educators, and we’ve helped improve the lives of hundreds of little boys and girls in Henderson County.  We know we’re making a difference, and we are keenly aware that it is possible because of the support of this incredible community. 

I am personally thankful for the heart and passion with which the staff of the Children & Family Resource Center do their job. We are deeply humbled by the support of our community, our donors, our volunteers, the best board members in town (past and present), and our community partners and the passion they have for helping us improve the lives of children.  Thank you for another unbelievable year.

Prevention drives our mission to improve the lives of children in our community. We are intentionally focused on serving children during early childhood in an effort to prevent bigger problems later in life. We believe we can have the most impact on a human’s life by starting early.

BECK’S STORY

“We are so very blessed that the Preschoolers Reaching Educational Potential (PREP) program came to our son's school, First Baptist Church Wee School, to do screenings this year. If not for those screenings, we would have never found out our son has trouble with his vision. We never in a million years would have guessed he couldn't see out of his right eye.

After his school gave us the test results, we immediately made an appointment with the eye doctor and found out that our son has amblyopia, a condition where the vision in one eye does not develop fully and cannot focus. Without interventions, Beck’s vision would never develop correctly in that eye and if left untreated, would suffer irreversible damage.

The PREP program allowed us to catch this early and gave us the time we needed to treat his condition aggressively. He now wears glasses full time, and we patch his eye two hours every night. The vision in his right eye has improved tremendously in the past 6 months and we are so excited with his progress so far. Our family is so VERY THANKFUL for this program and all they do, because without them, we would have never known anything was wrong. We hope by telling our family’s story, you can see the impact your support for the Children & Family Resource Center and their PREP program has made to the lives of the over 1,200 three, four, and five year olds screened each year for developmental, vision, and hearing delays. Your gift allows families like mine to receive these services and prevent a lifetime of vision impairment.

HEIDY & JAYDEN’S STORY

Whether working with newborns and preschoolers or teenagers that are on a path that threatens their ability to graduate, we are committed to the value of education and believe that

every child needs an effective education for success in life.

Heidy is a State Champion! In June 2015, she won the State’s Highest Scholastic Award and was recognized at the State of North Carolina’s annual conference for earning the highest GPA among all Adolescent Parenting Program participants across our state! She is the third teen mom from Henderson County to win this award over the past 15 years.

This remarkable young woman has completed the Adolescent Parenting Program, and is now enrolled in our Parents as Teachers program where she’ll continue to get much-needed support to help her transition into adulthood, develop her parenting skills and achieve self-sufficiency. Through our program, a trained parent educator will work with Heidy to help her create a stable, nurturing and stimulating home environment, and to develop her parenting skills. We will be

in her home at least twice a month teaching her about what is happening with her son at each stage of his development so she can become the best mother and teacher for him. We will teach her how to make playtime with her son more meaningful, and how to help him gain the skills he will need later in life. Along the way, Jayden will be screened for developmental delays, because we know it is important to catch problems early and address them quickly.

Being a teen mom has not stopped Heidy from pursuing her dreams and continuing her education. With the help of one of the Children & Family Resource Center’s Scholarship for Single Parents, Heidy is continuing her education by studying to be an Ultrasound Technician at AB Tech. Without a doubt, this remarkable young woman will do great things!

We’ve been serving families in this community for 16 years. Our story with Jayden’s family began in September 2009, when his mother Heidy became pregnant with him at the age of 16. She joined our Adolescent Parenting Program, and with the support of a team of loving adults in her life, she graduated from high school with honors, as a single parent and teen mom.

EarlyEducation -Quality Improvement

When a baby is born, he will have most of the brain cells he will need for his entire life. Almost immediately, the brain begins building connections. In fact, it will build 700 new neural connections per second in the first years of life! This process of ‘brain building’ is directly impacted by the child's environment and life experiences.

This is why our focus in early childhood extends from the home to the child care center. Whether at home or in a child care center, the environment where a baby spends his or her time has a huge impact on development. We are working to make sure those environments are the best they can be.

At the Children & Family Resource Center, we have been working to improve the quality of local child care programs since we opened our doors. We do that by working with program directors and center owners, and by providing education and training to child care providers throughout the county.

The State of North Carolina rates a child care center’s quality on a five-point scale, with 5 stars being the highest quality. Education and training of teachers has a direct impact on quality of care. These quality improvements are a direct result of the work of our Child Care Resource & Referral program.(We partner with Smart Start of Henderson County to offer this service.)
