Welcome to the July edition of Impact.
Coming up this month, we have the Keynote
Presentation from Eva Polak. This looks to
be another interesting talk with the enticing
title of ‘Photography as Self Expression’. For those new to the
Society the keynote speaker is especial ly invited to come along to
present to us. The committee discusses the names of
photographers who have achieved merit in their field and are well
respected before somebody is invited. And in view of the nature of
the event we are able to cover the costs of travel and
accommodation for the speaker. This therefore means we can
invite speakers from further afield than the Well ington region.
In addition to the keynote evening, we ask the speaker to offer
some form of educational input to the members and once again, as
you wil l know by now, Eva has put on two workshops to cover her
time here in Well ington. Titles for these workshops are Abstract
Photography and Introduction to Impressionist Photography to be
run Friday and over Saturday/Sunday respectively. Even if you are
new to photography these workshops wil l also be interesting as
they wil l open up, offer and challenge you to look at new ways to
enjoy your creative hobby. Further detai ls can be found below.
Although limited there are spaces available sti l l , so please do
enquire with Tom, our treasurer, if you are interested in attending.
Please note, we shall be inviting members from other clubs and the
general Well ington population through the Well ington Photography
Meet-up web-page, and so spaces are expected to be fi l led very
soon.
Our second meeting in July wil l be the technical evening; here we
aim to have a very interactive and social evening whereby you wil l
get the chance to talk and ask questions throughout. We shall have
four workstations and guest speakers at each. People wil l be
assigned to groups and as the evening progresses each group wil l
move around the room at regular time intervals. The theme is from
capturing the image through to turning it into a final product.
As usual we conduct our AGM during the third quarter of the
calendar year. At this time we appoint new committee members
and maintain current ones. Therefore, if anybody would l ike to be
involved in the way WPS is run; help deliver what we do during the
year and general ly just assist us make the society continue to be
successful then please do come forward or suggest somebody you
might l ike to be involved. Help is always warmly received.

The Educational Technology

is about 'Telling the story of taking
photos and presenting them'.
There wil l be four workstations:
Camera Options;
Lightroom Processing;
Printing;
Presenting Photographs on the Web.
I should mention the previous June meetings:
Our talk on the subject of Aerial Photography/Mapping by David Napier, was
absolutely excellent. David clearly was sti l l enjoying his couple of decades with
NZAM and provided a very enjoyable, engaging and interesting talk. We were
treated to seeing first-hand one of NZAM’s large format fi lm cameras – in its
day costing more than $500k (see photo).
The printed image competition this year was judged by Jenny O’Connor.
Jenny provided a superb critiquing session, offering positive and constructive
feedback to entrants; there were over 30 images, al l mounted, and all were of a
high standard. Jenny’s choices for the winners and runners-up for both the
Open and Closed sections were spot-on. Glen Wheatley and Lesley Moyes
were the winner and runner-up respectively for the Open Competition; and Carol Anderson and Lesley Moyes
were the winner and runner-up for the Closed Competition respectively; a big ‘well done’ goes to each.
There a few things coming up through the year that should be brought to your attention: Well ington Regional
Interclub Competition (detai ls below); our own AGM in August; the Eva Pollack Keynote evening in July and her
two separate workshops (Abstract and Impressionist Photography); Guy Gowan Lightroom seminars; our Annual
Exhibition; The Central Regional Convention in November at Silverstream Retreat hosted by Hutt Camera Club.
I look forward to seeing you at the July club evenings. Quote of the month:

A MEMBER’S PROFILE:
Janice McKenna
How old were you when you first started
taking photographs and what got you
started?
I have always taken photographs and can't
real ly remember when I started, just the
travel or snap type, never really taken it
seriously. What got me started I guess was
going through all my parents old
photographs, my father’s from the second
world war and my mother’s of us as children
and growing up, seeing how you can capture
time and memories of those important times
in your l ife.
What was your first camera?
My first serious camera was the Canon 7D,
prior to that had just been point and shoots. . .
What types of photographs do you like
taking?
Nature and Wildl ife are my passion; it is
challenging and requires a great deal of
patience. I can lose myself for hours trying
to get the perfect or near perfect shot.
What’s the most valuable bit of photographic
gear you own?
My bird identification guide. . . and my iPhone
which doubles as my GPS unit. .
Where did you get it?
Unity Books in Wil l is Street, a favourite
haunt!
What do you enjoy most about being a
member of WPS?
Learning and mixing with other
photographers.
Do you have a photographic tip to pass on?
Always look behind you.

WPS ANNUAL EXHIBITION
This year we aim to present a Well ington theme in our exhibition and are proposing the topic ‘Waters
of Well ington’ to replace the open showcase of members work. This wil l give us something to work
towards and wil l reflect (no pun intended) a club effort. The theme presents an enticingly wide scope
for interpretation. . .
In addition to the main topic we hope that each of the SIGs and the 'Beginners group' wil l present a
selection of their year's best work.
Venue is yet to be determined but we shall aim to showcase 50 prints.
Remember all prints for selection are to be at the club before 25 September, and critiquing wil l take
place on Thursday 23 October.
