iMMMMMMi PAGE 14 THE BINGHAMTON PRESS, SATURDAY, FEB. 24, 1945 'Gang Bang' Is Practice For Rescue Whole Task Force Wor Together to Save Men Downed at Sea By WILLIAM McGAFFIN SPECIAL RADIO To The Binghamton Press and the Chicago Daily News With Our Fast Carrier Task Force, Somewhere in the Pa- cific, Feb. 24—"And one of them * shall not fail without ' the knowledge of your Father who art in Heaven. . . . " "bang bangs** can be dan- gerous. A "gang bang" is a dress rehearsal for battle in which a whole task force works out together. Planes pepper the blue sky for miles around, doing mock attacks with live ammunition. They strafe and bomb wooden sleds, towed by carriers. Ship's gunners deliver red • and yellow and black puffs at red-sleeve targets towed by other planes. Combat air pa- trols and anti-submarine mis- sions wing far out on vigilant searches. Sometimes, someone gets hurt — maybe fatally. And then it is that the men curse bitterly to themselves. Losses are expected in actual battle— but in operational accidents they are hard to rationalize, whatever the reasons. High Regard for Life Such occasions, however, give the fleet a chance to dem- onstrate still another phase of its amazing versatility—and more important, still, its high regard for individual life. "Stand by to receive de- stroyer with personnel." Twice we have had that call—and twice a laughing pilot has come bobbing back to us on a b o a t s w a i n ' s chair, pulled across from a destroyer. , Once it was little Ensign Joe Mater a, East Boston, " Mass., who had to t ditch his fighter plane one day while attempting to return to our carrier. Once it was Ensign Pete Cochran, of East Point, Ga., pilot of a TBM, that cracked up in midair. Ensign Cochran's two air- crewmen were lost despite desperate efforts to save them. They were swell kids and the tragedy of their deaths was heightened by the fact that they themselves had assisted in the rescue of another downed flyer only a few days before. But for quick work by a destroyer, however, Ensign Cochran would have been lost, too. His parachute was pull- ing him under and he was rapidly drowning when three sailors jumped overboard from the destroyer and cut him loose. Giant Cooperative Our heroic air-sea rescue service brings back far more than it loses. It is a rescue service in which the whole task force participatesr—hun- dreds of planes, scores of great ships, thousands of men. A giant cooperative. We who have been out awhile have grown used to these constantly recurring miracles. But Scotty is new out here. Scotty is Lt. J. David Scott, former Allen (Pa.) Morning Call reporter. It was only a few weeks ago that S c-o t t y k i s s e d his wife, •'Honey," goodby at Bethle- hem, Pa., and came west with his brood of marine fliers "whom he serves with parental devotion as intelligence offi- cer. We were discussing the Jap * way—suicidal "Banzais" of their soldiers on the beach- heads and how little regard they have for human life—as we watched the destroyer bringing back Pete Cochrane. Scotty was inspired. "It's so completely Ameri- can," he said. "The whole task force stops to pick up one lit- tle man from one little town in one little corner of Amer- ica. "This Is the * American way." Didn't Hear About Draft, Hermit Jailed Lewiston, Idaho, Feb. 24 (U.R) —William C. Morland, 44, who took to the hills in 1932 because he didn't like the new president, puzzled in his jail cell today over the changes that have taken place in the 13 years since he last talked to anyone. He was surprised among other things that the same man was still president. He didn't even know that the world was embroiled in another war. He ,was convinced that fail- ure to register for selective service was a serious thing. He was held on a charge of draft evasion as well as steal- ing from government forest rangers whom he had led a merry chase for years. "I went into the hills when Roosevelt beat Hoover," the bearded, dimunitive Morfand said. "The federals have been after me ever since for bor- rowing clothes and stuff from their ranger stations. I didn't want to go to jail." * Morland surrendered peace- fully when the rangers finally slipped up on him. He gave them his .22 calibre rifle and was ready to plead guilty to pilfering from them when he* was taken before U. S. Com- missioner E. B. Steele at Orfino. "You're also charged with failure to register for the draft," Mr. Steele told him. "To fight in a war?" asked Morland. * "Yes," said Mr. Steele. "Who got us into that?" demanded Morland. $ The Federal Bureau of In- vestigation reportedly was looking for some other ex- planation for Morland's leav- ing his Kentucky home for the wilds of Idaho. He had served two prison terms in Arkansas, they said. Chinese to Learn Flight for Peace Kansas City, Feb. 24 W- Thirteen Chinese handpicked by Generalissimo Chiang Kai- shek have arrived here from Chungking to learn how to build and operate a commer- cial transport airline for peacetime in their native country. After learning to speak English, they will be- come regular employes of Transcontinental & Western Air. inc., working in admin- istrative offices, maintenance, operations, traffic and engi- neering departments. Larson who spent '25 years in China as a missionary of the American Southern Baptist Convention is teaching the students English. 1,000,000,000th LOAF BREAD Boston (U.R)—Hathaway Bak- eries, Inc., recently baked their 1,000,000,000th. loaf of bread. Movable Fireplace Shown at Exhibit Chicago, Feb. 24 (U.F9—Have you been dreaming about a fireplace you can pick up and move from room to room In your home? Whether you have or not; such a fireplace is now a reality, on view for recent buyers at the American Fur- niture Mart here. Also displayed at the show were chairs of a type that can be adapted, in pairs, to make a piano bench, in trios to serve as a love seat; and in four as a card table. These chairs, described as the "trickiest yet conceived," also can be set up in circular man- ner, and, pesto! a sofa. One of the main features of the show was styling, about 40 per cent of the furniture suites being in the modern and 18th Century designs. Officials of the market pre- dicted that the modern style is destined to predominate in the post-war era. because of its favoritism with the youth now in the armed forces. 'Gang Bang' Is Practice For Rescue

Whole Task Force Wor Together to Save Men

Downed at Sea

By WILLIAM McGAFFIN SPECIAL RADIO To The Binghamton Press and the Chicago Daily News

With Our Fast Carrier Task Force, Somewhere in the Pacific, Feb. 24—"And one of them * shall not fail without

' the knowledge of your Father who art in Heaven. . . . "

"bang bangs** can be dangerous. A "gang bang" is a dress rehearsal for battle in which a whole task force works out together. Planes pepper the blue sky for miles around, doing mock attacks with live ammunition. They strafe and bomb wooden sleds, towed by c a r r i e r s . Ship's gunners deliver red

• and yellow and black puffs at red-sleeve targets towed by other planes. Combat air patrols and anti-submarine missions wing far out on vigilant searches.

Sometimes, someone gets hurt — maybe fatally. And then it is that the men curse bitterly to themselves. Losses are expected in actual battle— but in operational accidents they are hard to rationalize, whatever the reasons.

High Regard for Life Such occasions, however,

give the fleet a chance to demonstrate still another phase of its amazing versatility—and more important, still, its high regard for individual life.

"Stand by to receive destroyer with personnel." Twice we have had that call—and twice a laughing pilot has come bobbing back to us on a b o a t s w a i n ' s chair, pulled across from a destroyer. ,

Once it was little Ensign Joe Mater a, East Boston,

" Mass., who had tot ditch his fighter plane one day while attempting to return to our carrier. Once it was Ensign Pete Cochran, of East Point, Ga., pilot of a TBM, that cracked up in midair.

Ensign Cochran's two air-crewmen were lost despite desperate efforts to save them. They were swell kids and the tragedy of their deaths was heightened by the fact that they themselves had assisted in the rescue of another downed flyer only a few days before.

But for quick work by a destroyer, however, Ensign Cochran would have been lost, too. His parachute was pulling him under and he was rapidly drowning when three sailors j u m p e d overboard from the destroyer and cut him loose.

Giant Cooperative Our heroic air-sea rescue

service brings back far more than it loses. It is a rescue service in which the whole task force participatesr—hundreds of planes, scores of great ships, thousands of men. A giant cooperative.

We who have been out awhile have grown used to t h e s e constantly recurring miracles. But Scotty is new out here. Scotty is Lt. J. David Scott, former Allen (Pa.) Morning Call reporter. It was only a few weeks ago that S c-o t t y k i s s e d his wife, •'Honey," goodby at Bethlehem, Pa., and came west with his brood of marine fliers "whom he serves with parental devotion as intelligence officer.

We were discussing the Jap * way—suicidal "Banzais" of their soldiers on the beachheads and how little regard they have for human life—as we watched the destroyer bringing back Pete Cochrane. Scotty was inspired.

"It's so completely American," he said. "The whole task force stops to pick up one little man from one little town in one little corner of America.

"This Is the * American way."

Didn't Hear About Draft, Hermit Jailed

Lewiston, Idaho, Feb.

He ,was convinced that failure to register for selective service was a serious thing. He was held on a charge of draft evasion as well as stealing from government forest rangers whom he had led a merry chase for years.

"I went into the hills when Roosevelt beat Hoover," the bearded, dimunitive Morfand said. "The federals have been after me ever since for borrowing clothes and stuff from their ranger stations. I didn't want to go to jail." *

Morland surrendered peacefully when the rangers finally slipped up on him. He gave them his .22 calibre rifle and was ready to plead guilty to pilfering from them when he* was taken before U. S. Commissioner E. B. Steele at Orfino.

"You're also charged with failure to register for the draft," Mr. Steele told him.

"To fight in a war?" asked Morland. *

"Yes," said Mr. Steele. "Who got us into that?"

demanded Morland. $ The Federal Bureau of In

vestigation reportedly was looking for some other explanation for Morland's leaving his Kentucky home for the wilds of Idaho. He had served two prison terms in Arkansas, they said.

Chinese to Learn Flight for Peace

Kansas City, Feb. 24 W -Thirteen Chinese handpicked by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek have arrived here from Chungking to learn how to build and operate a commercial transport airline for peacetime in their native country. After learning to speak English, they will become regular employes of Transcontinental & Western Air. inc., working in administrative offices, maintenance, operations, traffic and engineering departments.

Movable Fireplace Shown at Exhibit

Chicago, Feb. 24 (U.F9—Have you been dreaming about a fireplace you can pick up and move from room to room In your home?

Whether you have or not; such a fireplace is now a reality, on view for recent buyers at the American Furniture Mart here.

Also displayed at the show were chairs of a type that can be adapted, in pairs, to make a piano bench, in trios to serve as a love seat; and in four as a card table. These chairs, described as the "trickiest yet conceived," also can be set up in circular manner, and, pesto! a sofa.

One of the main features of the show was styling, about 40 per cent of the furniture suites being in the modern and 18th Century designs. Officials of the market predicted that the modern style is destined to predominate in the post-war era. because of its favoritism with the youth now in the armed forces.
