Sunreef Mooloolaba Tour DescriptionsSunreef Mooloolaba offer a variety of aquatic experiences on the Sunshine Coast. Below are descriptions for our moat popular tours. More activities and dive training can be booked by customers during their visits including PADI dive training, standup paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing, tank dives and more.

1. Swimming with Humpback WhalesExperience Australia’s first Swim with Humpback Whales encounters with Sunreef Mooloolaba.Join us aboard one of our comfortable vessels and travel in search of these gentle giants. Once a whale is sighted, the boat is put into neutral 100m or more away from the whale, and if conditions are deemed safe by our trained crew, a guide will lead swimmers into the water with a floating safety line attached to the boat. This experience is 100% on the Whales’ terms and sparks their curiosity, with whales often swimming closer to see who is hanging out in their domain. Even if you don’t get to swim with the whales, it is an intimate whale watching experience. These tours are seasonal from July to October - call the Dive Centre to check dates and availability.

2. Diving HMAS BrisbaneDive one the World’s best Wrecks, the ex-HMAS Brisbane. A decommissioned guided missile destroyer, she was scuttled just 2.9 nautical miles off the Sunshine Coast more than ten years ago. This makes it a easy venture out and is available to dive all year round. Sunreef has exclusive use of the two midship moorings, so in a double dive you can visit the entire wreck comfortably. Explore the outside of the wreck and encounter the abundance of local aquatic sea life that inhabits her. Then explore within the ship, enter the engine room or even visit the control room where her kill switches are still in tact.

3. Diving or Snorkeling Flinders ReefFlinders Reef is one of the most beautiful dive sites in Queensland. Haled by divers and snorkellers alike for its pristine conditions and stunning visibility year round. Flinders Reef is known for the abundance of different species of Turtles, which inhabit the entire reef system. If beautiful coral reefs are your idea of the perfect dive, look no further. It has the highest number of coral species of any sub tropical reef system along Australia’s East Coast. Swim throughs and pinnacles are scattered throughout this reef with something new to discover each time. Sunreef is the only company on the Sunshine Coast currently offering full 60-minute dives at stunning Flinders Reef.See Tour Fact Sheets and Terms and Conditions for more information.

Swim with Humpback Whales on Queensland’s Sunshine CoastAS the humpback whales are feeding up in the Antarctic ready for their migration to a warmer climate for winter, Sunreef Mooloolaba is preparing for their third Swim with Whales season on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.Sunreef Mooloolaba’s Dan Hart said the whales are currently feeding, eating in excess of one tonne of krill and small fish a day, increasing their blubber reserves, which they will live off throughout their migration north, not eating apart from the occasional opportune feed until they return home.Sunreef Mooloolaba are the pioneers of Swimming with Humpback Whales in Australia and are looking forward to again hosting more than 2000 guests from throughout Australia and the world during the four-month season from 8th July to 23rd October.“Swimming with these gentle giants of the deep is an almost indescribable privilege and something you will remember forever. It is very special – I love hearing everyone’s reactions as well – as soon as people spot them you can hear everyone squealing excitedly through their snorkels,” Dan said.Dan said the four-hour tours, which complied with national whale watching guidelines as well as Sunreef’s own strict Code of Practice, provide a unique and intimate experience with just 20 guests aboard. Guests need to be eight years or older and be competent swimmers. All children must also be accompanied by an adult.“Once everyone has been kitted out with a wetsuit and snorkelling gear at our Dive Centre, we jump aboard the boats – either one of Sunreef’s own vessels or Australia Zoo’s research vessel Croc One – and we head out.”“Each trip starts full briefing on what to expect and safety procedures before heading out the river mouth. Then it’s all eyes on the water – the whales generally swim along the same path – what we call the whale highway, which is about 15 nautical miles off the Coast but we often can encounter them much closer.“We look for the tell tail “blow” which is water that is projected between three and six metres high from two blow holes (or nostrils) between the whale’s snout and dorsal fin. On average, adult whales surface every five to 15 minutes but can dive and stay submerged for up to 45 minutes. Calves must surface every three to five minutes.” Dan said.“Then once a whale or pod of whales is sighted we follow them at a safe distance for a while before positioning the boat more than 100metres away and putting it in neutral. If the conditions are determined safe by our trained crew, swimmers will be allowed into the water with a guide and a floating safety line attached to the boat.“From this point it’s all up to the whale – it is a natural experience and it is 100% on the whale’s own terms. Even if you don’t get to swim with the whales this is still an intimate and awesome whale watching experience,” Dan said.Dan said that 2016, is shaping up to be a big year for the Swim with the Whales experience with over 22,000 whales expected to migrate north for the winter.“With the season running from the 8th July to 28th October, there are a limited number of trips available, with only 20 spots available on each vessel. We are encouraging people to book early and consider booking two to three experiences to avoid disappointment due to weather cancellation.“I just can’t wait to get in the water with them again. It’s such a unique experience that every time it’s just like my first all over again. It’s almost indescribable but it gives you a rare insight into their world – it gives me goose bumps just thinking about it.The Swim with Whale Experience is just $149 per person. Sunreef Mooloolaba, based in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, is the longest established dive centre in the region and the largest in South East Queensland. A blanket of fish part like curtains opening as you swim through long corridors and the confined living quarters that would have once been teeming with navy personnel as they travelled the world on Australia’s behalf serving in both the Vietnam and Gulf wars and countless peace keeping missions. It can be an eerie feeling as the sound of your breathing is replaced by imagined echoes of footsteps and every day naval life, but it’s one of the world’s best wreck dives and its right here in the beautiful temperate waters of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The ex-HMAS Brisbane, now a marine park, was scuttled just three nautical miles off the coast just over 10 years ago and is now teeming with more than 200 species of sea life from small and large fish, to hard and soft corals, the smallest nudibranchs to larger occupants like resident bull rays and octopuses and seasonal visitors like grey nurse and leopard sharks. From the moment you drop over the side of Sunreef Mooloolaba’s comfortable catamarans from their two exclusive midship moorings, the ship slowly revels itself starting with the stacks, just five metres from the surface, and as you go deeper through schools of batfish, snapper and barracuda, the main deck and the bulk of the 133metre destroyer partially reveals itself. From the main deck, 15 metres from the surface, you can begin exploring the exterior of the ship which is completely encrusted with hard corals, checking out the huge guns juxtaposed with the beauty of crown, scorpion and damsel fish. Stop and say hello to the resident octopus hanging out around the portholes before dropping down to the sandy sea floor at 28 metres where you will more than likely be greeted to Roxy, a huge bull ray and her entourage of sand and honeycomb rays.Once you move inside, the sounds of the sea are muffled and with the darkness exploring becomes a close encounter, as the massive engine room, the confined bunkrooms and living quarters and their new undersea residents are revealed by your torchlight. Rather than naval commanders, the control room is now filled with glassfish and is also home to feather stars and painted crayfish. Back outside, another highlight is swimming beneath the massive rear propellers ducked until the rear deck and if you are lucky you might be cruising the wreck with the occasional grey nurse shark in winter, or leopard shark in summer.Sunreef’s experienced instructors have travelled the world scuba diving, but they still list the HMAS Brisbane among their all-time favourite diving experiences and feel lucky to watch it change with the season. It’s suitable for divers of all skill levels and was specially prepared before scuttling to allow easy and safe access throughout the ship. It’s position also means its protected from strong surges and the visibility is great – from 15 to 30 metres. To find out more or book a double dive that you will want to keep coming back to again and again, call the Sunreef team on +61 7 5444 5656 or visit www.sunreef.com.au.
