Russell Zimmerman, Emeritus, Chaplain Welcome, in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! It is our prayer that the Holy Spirit will open our hearts and lives to the words of Jesus. Please plan to join us for fellowship following the 10:00am service. If you have any comments or questions regarding the service or any other matter, please feel free to speak to Pastor Jones or Pastor Garcia. Should you be in need of any pastoral service, please do not hesitate to bring it to the pastor’s attention. Visitors Please sign the Fellowship Pad and include your address. If you have no church home, are interested in becoming a part of our church family, or would like information about Immanuel, please talk with an usher, elder, Pastor Jones or Pastor Garcia, who will be happy to speak with you. Communion in the Pew If it has become necessary for you to have communion brought to you in the pew and you have not already done so, please notify the pastor or an elder each time you attend. We are pleased to assist you to receive this great blessing on a regular basis. Large Print Bulletins are available from an usher. Adaptive Hearing System is available from an usher. Children in Worship We at Immanuel welcome and encourage the attendance of all children in our worship service. We also understand that children will behave as the children they are. They may not be able to sit as still as adults and they sometimes act or speak out during the worship. That is to be expected. However, children can sometimes cause a commotion which, if allowed to continue on, can be a detriment to the worship of others around them. We ask that you be sensitive to those times when your child’s behavior calls for their brief removal from the worship area. A cry room is provided for those times. The Ushers or Elders will assist you in its location and use. We’ve also provided Quiet Sacks that are located on the small coat tree in the narthex. These bags contain pictures and crayons that our children can use. Please return them to the “tree” when you are done with them. Children may be brought to the communion rail to receive a blessing.

Sixth Sunday after Epiphany

February 15-16, 2020

AS WE GATHER

The full identity of Jesus, which is revealed during the Epiphany season,

demonstrates beyond a doubt that He is both human and divine. In the

nativity accounts, the Gospel writers focus on the humanity of Jesus—that

He is born a human baby and grows up with full humanity. In Epiphany,

His divinity is revealed as well through His miraculous acts. As Paul wrote

to the followers of Christ in Colossae of Jesus: “In Him the whole fullness

of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in Him, who is the head of

all rule and authority” (Colossians 2:9–10). We rejoice in coming to know

more fully the Christ who fills us with His Spirit and His love.

† SERVICE OF THE WORD †

INTROIT Psalm 98:7–9; antiphon: v. 2

P: The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.

C: Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it!

P: Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together C: Before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. P: He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with

equity. C: The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his

righteousness in the sight of the nations.

SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY

P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. (sung)

P Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, You sent Your Son to bring us peace and

reconciliation. Grant that we may forgive others as You have

forgiven us by the blood of Jesus; through Jesus Christ, Your Son,

our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one

God, now and forever.

C Amen. (sung) 10AM SPECIAL MUSIC “O Jesus, I Have Promised” Celebration Handbell Choir Kristy Fogelsinger, director OLD TESTAMENT Deuteronomy 30:15–20 15 “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. 16 If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God[a] that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules,[b] then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 17 But if your heart turns away, and you

will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, 20 loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.” P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE LESSON 1 Corinthians 3:1–9 3 But I, brothers,[a] could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, 3 for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human? 5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. 9 For we are God's fellow workers. You are God's field, God's building.

P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 5:21–37

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 5th Chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. (sung)

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother[a] will be liable to judgment; whoever insults[b] his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell[c] of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to

terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. 31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. 33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

Adult Inquirers Class is a “Small Catechism” based instruction on the

Christian faith. It is designed for Lutherans (even members) who would

like to “brush up” on the basic tenets of the Christian faith and non-

members who would like to know more about what the Lutheran Church

is all about- especially the Missouri Synod. This course also serves as

“instruction” for those wishing to join the church- but absolutely no

pressure is put on anyone to join the church!! Curriculum, Luther’s Small

Catechism will be provided free to non-members.

The course format is lecture with Powerpoint, with plenty of opportunity for

question & answer and discussion. It is designed to note the differences

and similarities in various world religions and among Christian

denominations- with respect, not judgment. It also serves to answer any

questions about “Why Lutherans do what they do.” We will meet at

Immanuel Lutheran Church on Sunday, March 8th at 8:45am – 9:35am. I

like to start and end on time due to the 10am Divine Worship. The class

will conclude on April 5, 2020. There is no cost to the non-members

attending the class. You will receive a Luther’s Small Catechism which

we use as a textbook, and is yours to keep. Please plan on attending and

bring your questions! If you have any questions regarding the class,

please feel free to call or email me.

Discipleship Corner God instructed the Israelites to give the first portion of their grain harvest

to the Lord. “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all

your produce” (Proverbs 3:9). Most of us are not farmers so we honor

God by giving the first portions of the income we earn through work. In

the King James translation of this verse perhaps more clearly states that

we are to give from what we already have (from our reserves) and also

from our increase. “Honor the Lord with thy substance, and with the

firstfuits of all thine increase.”
