If you have any comments or questions regarding the service or any other matter, please feel free to speak to Pastor Jones or Pastor Garcia. Should you be in need of any pastoral service, please do not hesitate to bring it to the pastor’s attention. Visitors Please sign the Fellowship Pad and include your address. If you have no church home, are interested in becoming a part of our church family, or would like information about Immanuel, please talk with an usher, elder, Pastor Jones or Pastor Garcia, who will be happy to speak with you. Communion in the Pew If it has become necessary for you to have communion brought to you in the pew and you have not already done so, please notify the pastor or an elder each time you attend. We are pleased to assist you to receive this great blessing on a regular basis. Large Print Bulletins are available from an usher. Adaptive Hearing System is available from an usher. Children in Worship We at Immanuel welcome and encourage the attendance of all children in our worship service. We also understand that children will behave as the children they are. They may not be able to sit as still as adults and they sometimes act or speak out during the worship. That is to be expected. However, children can sometimes cause a commotion which, if allowed to continue on, can be a distraction to the worship of others around them. We ask that you be sensitive to those times when your child’s behavior calls for their brief removal from the worship area. A cry room is provided for those times. The Ushers or Elders will assist you in its location and use. We’ve also provided Quiet Sacks that are located on the small coat tree in the narthex. These bags contain pictures and crayons that our children can use. Please return them to the “tree” when you are done with them. Children may be brought to the communion rail to receive a blessing.

Rally Day

The Heart of Our Teaching

Joy: fully Immanuel

AS WE GATHER Jesus is the heart of the Bible; today we ask Him to be the heart of our teaching and learning. Teaching Christ is a privilege for each teacher in class, every parent at home, and all of us as we seek to teach others of our Lord by word and deed. Jesus is the heart of our teaching, and our prayer is that the Holy Spirit would open our hearts.

OLD TESTAMENT READING Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10

1 All the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the LORD had commanded Israel. 2So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month. 3And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. 5And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. 6And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 8They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. 9And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. 10Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE READING 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 16Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not despise prophecies, 21but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22Abstain from every form of evil. 23Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL John 16:20-22

P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixteenth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 20Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

P: Paul writes, “I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and all the saints.” United in love and faith,

Page 6: Immanuel Lutheran Church...Sep 09, 2019  · for all with us are in need of Your mercy and deliverance; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and

let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. For the Gospel of Jesus Christ to reach into every corner of our broken world, that all who are running away from our heavenly Father turn from the path that leads to destruction, and by the Holy Spirit turn to Jesus for redemption and restoration, let us pray to the Lord.

C: Father, strengthen us to turn to You in repentance and faith.

P: For all those within the Church of Jesus, both clergy and laity, that

we join as one to share the restoring word of Jesus with those we are sent to serve, embodying the spirit of Paul’s words to Philemon that “the sharing of [our] faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us,” let us pray to the Lord.

C: Father, grant that we know all the good things that come to us as we share Your Word.

P: For all those who seek restoration with others, that the message of

forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation not only be received in humble faith, but also shared within the relationships we have, knowing that every one of us is dependent upon Christ’s mercy and love, let us pray to the Lord.

C: Father, help us to extend to others the mercy we receive from You.

P: For all who labor in positions of service and leadership in our country,

state, and local community, including the members of the armed forces, that they know the constant protection of our gracious God and joyfully serve others in the vocations they have been given, let us pray to the Lord.

C: Father, thank You for serving us through the lives of others. P: For all who are broken in heart, body, mind, and relationship,

including those who are shut-in, hospitalized, in care centers, awaiting surgery, and recovering from medical procedures, especially . . ., that the Lord would refresh the hearts of His saints and work mightily for their good, let us pray to the Lord.

C: Father, grant healing and refreshment to all for whom we pray. P: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom

we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen.

The 5pm service concludes with the Lord’s Prayer, the Benediction, and the Closing Hymn

CLOSING HYMN “Filled with Joy, In Grace, Abounding”

tune: Go, My Children

by: Dr. Jeffrey E. Burkart A theme hymn for the 2020 National Lutheran Schools Week

Filled with joy, in grace abounding, hope-filled and awed, We have come with praise redounding to You, O God! For the love You shower on us And the peace that rests upon us, We, in ceaseless, praying chorus thank You, O LORD!

When our lives are filled with gladness, let us give praise. When our joys give way to sadness, help us to raise Prayers that speak of hope-filled sureness In Your love and perfect pureness, LORD, lead us to full matureness in trying days.

In Your Word alone is solace whene’er we stray, Seeking sinful pathways, lawless, from Christ the Way. Still, the Holy Spirit sends us Faith in Christ, who always tends us, As, in grace, He gently bends us towards Him each day.

Page 9: Immanuel Lutheran Church...Sep 09, 2019  · for all with us are in need of Your mercy and deliverance; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and

Where is peace, where grace, where mercy? Where shall we rest? Where is water when we’re thirsty, worn, or oppressed? Borne in God’s own Living Water, By grace, through faith, Christ the Potter Shapes each grace-filled son and daughter for ev’ry test. Δ Fully joyful, ever thankful, let praises swell

As we glorify the Father and ever tell How God’s only Son, LORD Jesus, Came to die and, rising, frees us; Now, the Holy Spirit leads us with God to dwell.

POSTLUDE

Stewardship Corner God never abandons us, but we can elect to turn away from Him. In spite of the good things and miracles Jesus did on earth, many rejected Him. They cried, “Crucify, crucify Him!” (Luke 23:21). We are appalled. “How could they?” we think, but whenever we refuse to deny ourselves and follow Him we reject the Savior as well. When our focus is on ourselves, we push God out of our lives. In spite of our unworthiness and sinful natures, God reaches out to us in His grace, love, and mercy. Our Good Shepherd comes looking for His lost and erring sheep (John 10:14-16). He comes to us as our Good Shepherd so that we may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). …………………………………………………………………………………….

Immanuel invites you to come and root for our Bulldog volleyball teams on the following home dates. All the dates are double headers with the younger team playing in the 4:30 game and the older team will play at about 5:30.

Music Notes

“Please think about sharing your God given talent of music.”

A new school year also means a new choir year for Immanuel’s Musicians. If you aren’t already a member of one

of the musical groups here, think about joining this year! God’s gifted many people with musical abilities and what better way to use those gifts than to return thanks to Him and praise Him in worship? Musicians are needed in the following areas:

Handbell Ringing—Celebration Handbells will be starting Saturday, September 14th at 8:00am. New ringers are welcome to join, you can start with no former knowledge of ringing. Bell ringers meet in the School Music Room.

Choir—Adult Choir is open to anyone in High School or older who loves to sing. The choir will be enhancing worship with a wide variety of music from the old classics to gospel to contemporary and everything in between! We will meet Thursday evenings from 6:30—8:00pm starting September 5. Rehearsals for the time being will be in the church balcony.

Service Leading--- If you are interested in helping lead a Blended service (the last weekend of each month) as an instrumentalist or vocalist, please come to the rehearsals on Wednesdays at 5:15pm in the sanctuary. Each month is different hymns and songs so you can participate on a monthly basis.

Instrumentalists—If you play an instrument (or played one when you were in high school), you too, can add your song to the angel hosts’ in worship praise. Instruments can add a new dimension of sound to hymns and are great on their own too. Don’t wait for a special occasion to offer your talents—any service would be enhanced with instruments!

Singing solos or small groups—Anyone interested in working on a vocal solo or working with a small group that meets to work on a specific song is encouraged to do so! The music director will work with anyone willing!
