Our Mission Statement March 2020

Mark 12:28-31 (NRSV) One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, "Which commandment is the first of all?"

Jesus answered, "The first is, 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

Dear Partners in the Gospel, An excerpt from Charles Colson’s book, How Now Shall We Live? caught my eye, and I’d like to share it with you.

Western culture once resembled the first-century Jewish culture: Most people knew the Scriptures, even if they weren’t always obedient to its commands. Likewise, most Americans had some sort of church affiliation and knew the basic tenets of Christianity, even if they went to church only on Easter. But that is no longer the case. Today, many people are completely unfamiliar with even basic biblical teaching, and we must find ways to engage those who think more like Greeks that Jews. We must follow the New Testament pattern for addressing a pagan culture.

Colson raises the challenge of the Church today. We can no longer assume that even our members have the basic bible knowledge that is required to build a faith response that will filter through all our lives. We must realize that it is no longer a given that people see the Church as a vital part of their life experience. We, as believers, know the joy and wholeness that a relationship with Jesus may bring. But unfortunately, many of us find it difficult to share those beliefs even with those we love most, let alone those whom we don’t know. Colson continues,

... as his (Christ’s) instruments, we are called to love people enough to reach to them in their own language. This is, of course, what foreign missionaries do; and today, more than ever, we are aliens in our own land, worldview missionaries to our own post-Christian, postmodernist (and pagan) culture.

As we walk our Lenten path, my prayer is that we all will prioritize a daily time for prayer, scripture reading, personal devotions, and spiritual renewing activities. As followers of Christ, we need to continually grow in our spiritual disciplines so that we may “know” the story, “love” the story, and then be empowered by the Holy Spirit to “Share God’s story” to all who will listen. Blessings,

Many items are needed and if you would like to donate any it would be helpful. Donations may be placed in the non-monetary basket in the Narthex. Thank you for your help in this important endeavor.

A completed kit includes: two cotton t-shirts, two gowns or sleep-ers, two receiving blankets, four cloth diapers (flat fold preferred), one jacket or sweatshirt with hood or sweater and baby cap, two pairs of socks, one hand towel (dark color preferred), two bars of gentle soap (4-5 oz.) in original wrapping and two diaper pins or large safety pins.

Some things to consider are: Sizes 6 to 24 are appropriate. Onsies can be altered into shirts by volunteers.

For any questions please call Caryl Thielman at 920-921-0811.

Save the Date: Saturday, April 18, 2020 from 8am—1pm Annual 2020 Spring Event

Our Oshkosh Conference annual 2020 Spring Event will be at Our Savior’s Lutheran, 1820 Wisconsin Ave. Oshkosh, WI 54901. Registration begins at 8am. You can enter the building off both parking areas, and we’ll direct you to the registration area. Our theme this year is “JUST LOVE: Carry It With You”. Pastor Jan LaVake will lead us in worship. Our guest speaker this year is Pastor Connie Weiss of Christ Lutheran ELCA, Oshkosh. Pastor Connie will share the amazing story of her truly mission-based congregation, and the beginning of a social justice program which literally seeks to “Fill the Gap”. “Just Fare Market” of Fond du Lac will be here with their products from around the world...a shopping experience to which we all look forward! The in-kinds gifts will be used for the “Birdie’s Blessing Box”, a “little small food pantry” similar to the little free libraries many people have in their communities. We have one here on our church grounds at Our Savior’s. We are requesting any non-perishable food items, as well as personal care and paper products...shampoos, deodorant, women’s hygiene products, toothpaste, Kleenex, toilet paper, etc. One-third of the offering will be given to the “Fill the Gap” charity chosen by Women of Our Savior’s, with the remaining balance sent to the synod. We will also be gathering any money your church has collected for the synod “Katie’s Fund” campaign. As in the past, there will be a “Continental” breakfast available after attendees register until worship at 9 am, and a business meeting before lunch, which will be served at noon. Registration form is on the bulletin board. Any questions contact Martie at 920-923-6232.

Spring Cleaning? – Fall Festival? What does Spring cleaning have to do with the WELCA Fall Festival?

When you are doing your Spring cleaning would you please set aside these items to donate to us to sell at our Fall Festival. We would appreciate gently used books, puzzles and games. This year we are also looking for used jewelry that you no longer use.

The sale of your donated items will help support I-T youth, our FDL community and worldwide organizations.

GARDEN OF READIN’

The busy holiday season is behind us for another year. Our focus is now on the season of Easter. As we follow the events of Jesus’ life during the Lent midweek services leading up to Easter we are reminded of the “Love” Jesus has for all of us. There are numerous books in the library that will take you on that journey. Some of these books are on display so you can just grab one and check it out. There are several books for children on display as well.

Some new additions to the library are “Anatomy of a Revived Church” by Thom Rainer. This book is being read and discussed by the council members. This book takes us through the anatomy of churches that were revived because they chose to live. This choice is ours – to live or die. Another donation is a Thru-the-bible Commentary Series – The Law – The book of Genesis. There are three volumes written by Dr. J. Vernon McGee. He offers sound biblical scholarship and practical, down-to-earth suggestions for applying the principles of Scripture to everyday life.

The children who frequent the library help the inchworm grow. For every book or DVD that they take home and return, a body part with the child’s name on is added to the inchworm. The worm is growing by leaps and bounds. It is half-way around the room already. Good work, kids!!

The Little Dresses for Africa ministry is still going strong. Check this out if you would like to participate in this ministry. All the supplies you need are in the library.

God’s Blessings to all!

Think about it Are you a Christian or a religious person? Religion is filled with rules and regulations one must follow to be part of a certain religious group. Christianity, however is agreeing to follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit entirely.

A Christian is one who has: LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS and SELF CONTROL.

A Christian is one who has had his heart changed by faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible was not given to increase our knowledge but to change our lives. Through religion we become works oriented. We pray because we are supposed to, rather than because we want to. Jesus has called us to love Him and to love one another, not to be fault finders in the body of Christ. In Matthew 7:17-20 Jesus explained that we will know people by their fruit. He didn’t say we should examine people and try to find fault in them. Religious people actually don’t like anyone who doesn’t do things their way. Jesus Himself was attacked by the religious people of His day. (Remember when He healed a person on Sunday?”) Except for Christianity, all religions say you must do something to earn your salvation.

Only the Christian faith says: It Is Finished. Jesus did it all for us. Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling.

Thanks to all! Gift from the Heart

Thanks to All!! The generosity of I.T. once again will be a blessing to many with the amazing food collection for the "Fondy Food Pantry". Thanks for your caring heart and helping hands. Also, a big thank you to our Senior High Youth for their help!!

Mission, Ministry and Money In the mid 1960’s Hertz Rent-a-Car shared a commercial with a man flying in the air and

landing in the car behind the wheel. The tag line was, “let Hertz put you in the driver ’s seat.” A few years later Avis, because it was only number 2 in the rental car business, had the slo-gan, “we are number 2, so we try harder.” Now comes Dollar Rental Car with its motto, “we

never forget whose dollar it is.”

The one from Dollar seems like a great slogan for I -T as we enter 2020 and begin another year of sharing our time, our talents, and our treasures to enable mission and ministry to occur in

our community and our world. The money I -T receives to conduct its work comes from you who generously share your monetary resources with our community of faith. We don ’t “forget whose dollar it is” that we use to fund our mission and fulfill God ’s ministry. We are cognizant of the fact that the dollars we receive to do God ’s work come from hard working people, like you our members and friends, who want to make a difference in the lives of children youth, young adults, middle agers, community neighbors, and senior citizens. As a community of

faith, we realize that everything we do, everything we are, and everything we will become, is because of you. Your gifts make a difference and enable mission and ministry to happen.

The leaders of I-T take seriously the sacred obligation to use the resources you give to I -T in the most efficient and cost -effective way possible, always knowing that every dollar we spend doing God’s work is your dollar at work making a difference. Like Dollar Rental Car, “we never

forget whose dollar it is.”

May God bring his blessings upon you and upon I -T in the new year as we strive to make a difference by sharing God ’s unconditional love to all we meet.
