The Purpose of Christmas - December 2015
Dear Partners in the Gospel
Christmas preparation is upon us. For me, getting into the
Christmas spirit, (especially before Thanksgiving) is a
challenge. So I began reading Rick Warrens The Purpose of
Christmas (Howard Books, 2006) for inspiration. Warren
writes, “The fact is – the birth of Jesus Christ is the most
significant event in the history of mankind. It split history
into A.D. and B.C., and every time you write a check, you’re
using Jesus Christ as the focus. We’re going to look at the
purpose of Christmas – why we celebrate it. At the very first Christmas, at
the birth of Jesus, an angel announced three things. In those three state-
ments of the angel, we find the three purposes of Christmas. Christmas is
a time for celebration. Christmas is a time for salvation. Christmas is a
time for reconciliation. We’re going to look at how these three words can
change your life forever.”
THE FIRST PURPOSE OF CHRISTMAS IS CELEBRATION!
“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of
great joy that will be for all the people.’” Luke 2:8-10 (NIV)
Why do we Celebrate? The bottom line is, Christmas is a party! We
celebrate because “God Loves us.... Because God is with us... and be-
cause God is here for us. The good news is this – God says, “I not only love
you, I’m with you all the time, you just need to be aware of it.” It means
you don’t have to face anything by yourself. Christmas is a time for
celebration!
THE SECOND PURPOSE OF CHRISTMAS IS SALVATION!
“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born for you; He is Christ
the Lord!” Luke 2:11
The Christ Child comes with God’s purpose. He has been sent with a
mission. Jesus saves us from our sins. He has come to save us for a
purpose. He has come to save us by God’s grace. Each of these salvific
actions allows us a new relationship with God, our neighbors and with the
world. Because of the Christ child, we can be new and renewed people,
confident in faith.

THE THIRD PURPOSE OF CHRISTMAS
IS RECONCILIATION!
“Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace,
good will toward men.” Luke 2:13-14 (KJV)
Rick Warren reminds us that Christmas is a time for
new beginnings. As God shows us his unfathomable
love for us, it inspires us to look upon each other with
the same loving forgiveness. Because of Jesus, we
can deepen in our peace with God (spiritual). We can
experience the Peace of God (emotional). And we can
then share that peace of God with each other
(relational). As God reconciled the sin of the world
with this Bethlehem babe, so to should we, his follow-
ers confess to, repent too and reconcile the hurts
that bind us, in the blood of Jesus Christ.
As he concludes, Warren reminds us, “If I were to get
a Christmas gift from you this Christmas, and I never
opened it… One, you would be disappointed. You’d
be hurt. And two, it would be a worthless gift be-
cause I received no benefit from it if I never opened
it. Jesus Christ is God’s Christmas gift to you. Yet,
you have gone Christmas after Christmas and never
opened the biggest gift under the tree – the gift of
salvation. God’s gift to you. Why even celebrate
Christmas if you’re not going to open the biggest gift?
Just get on with it. It doesn’t make sense to leave
the gift of your past forgiven, a purpose for living, and
a home in heaven. Who would ever leave that gift
unwrapped?” I hope you can join the Sunday Adult
Education hour at 9:30am on Nov. 22nd, 29th, and
Dec. 6th as we prepare for this transformative
season.

December 2015 Dear Partners in the Gospel, One of my favorite songs from the musical “Godspell” is a marvelous Advent song, reminding us to, “Prepare ye, the way of the Lord, Prepare ye, the way of the Lord!” As December descends upon us we are all busy preparing for the whole holiday season! The Christmas lights are already on some of the trees in our neighborhood. Outside lights are twinkling in the nighttime darkness. Stores are open late, parking lots are full. We are so busy preparing. We plan gifts for those we love-so much shopping to do, and wrapping and addressing greeting cards. But as Christians we do something else, too. Humbly, with prayer and penitence, we prepare our hearts to receive the greatest gift of all - the gift God personally gave to each of us when the Word became Incarnate in Jesus Christ and dwelt among us. In love God sent the Babe at Bethlehem. It was this love of God - selfless, endless, all embracing - which Jesus Christ revealed. Christ came to redeem humanity from sin, death, and the devil. And so on that first Christmas, in great love God struck the first harmonious note in the melody of love. In love God permits us to come into God’s Holy presence in complete joy, singing with Angels and Archangels, “Joy to the world, the Lord is come!” And our response? “Thanks be to God, who leads us, wherever we are, on a journey to spread the knowledge of Christ like a lovely perfume! Since we Christians have the unmistakable “scent” of Christ in our lives and a profound “love song” on our lips we are called to sing that unique song to a world which cries out, “what the world needs now, is love, sweet love, it’s the only thing that there’s just too little of!” So, being loved, we love; being forgiven, we forgive, having been shown mercy, we show mercy, having seen the light, we reflect the light of the world, Jesus Christ! Let your light shine this Christmas season!

Chocolate News
! ! ! !
Can you believe that it is December and almost time to celebrate the Lord’s coming to
earth over 2000 years ago? We want to thank everyone who purchased chocolates and
coffee for Christmas. If you were unable to take advantage of the sale, we do have
Seroogy candy bars available in 9 flavors. They can be purchased in the candy boxes by
the mailboxes or by the Church Office. Please contact Pat Bergstrom or Sue Brennan if you
would like additional candy bars. We have fresh supplies of candy bars as we replenished
our inventory when we went to Seroogy’s in November.
I was reading about the toys available for Christmas that could be connected to chocolate
in a Toy Insider holiday supplement in the November, 2015, Woman’s Day magazine. One
of the gifts mentioned is the Candy Craft Chocolate Pen. The promotion shows that you
insert a pouch of the chocolate into the motorized pen and draw shapes on a surface.
They will harden at room temperature or in the refrigerator. I’m sure that Martha Stewart
and future Marthas would enjoy making lacy butterflies or flowers to adorn their gourmet
cupcakes or cookies.
There were also ads for a Girl Scout cookie oven and an Easy Bake-Ultimate oven, Baking
Star edition. The picture in the ad for the Easy Bake Oven showed very small cookies, but
if you have the Candy Craft Chocolate Pen, you could make lacy chocolate designs on them
so that, hopefully, none of the people you serve them to would notice how small they were.
We hope you enjoy whatever gifts you receive for Christmas, but remember, the best gift we
have received is Jesus, who came to earth as a baby, and rose as our loving Savior. He is
God with us.
Christmas blessings to you,
Deborah Circle
P.S. December 16 is cover anything in chocolate day.
Anyone have some yarn laying around? We could
use it! Please drop it off at the office.

DON’T WORRY – BE HAPPY
Said the robin to the sparrow,” I should really like to know why these anxious human beings rush about and worry so much”. Said the sparrow to the robin, “Friend, I think that it must be that they have no heavenly Father such as cares for you and I”. Worry is like sitting in a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but you never get anywhere. All our fret and worry is caused by calculating without God. The one thing that will keep us from the possibility of worrying is bringing God in as the greatest factor in all our calculations. If you would spend as much time praying as you do worrying you might find out you have nothing to worry about. Worry brings on stress, and the greatest source of stress comes from trying to live our lives apart from God, trying to go our own way and be our own god. Stress is the root cause of a large percentage of sickness and disease. Dis---ease causes disease. The first key to lowering your stress level is to learn to know that God is in control of all things. And also, not to worry about the outcome because we have to accept whatever the results are. Let’s not worry so much. Let’s let God handle all our cares. In Matthew 21:22: and whatever you ask in prayer, your will receive, if you have faith. Stephen Ministers don’t worry about the results of their relationships with their care receivers. They know it’s in God’s hands. If you need or want to be a Stephen Minister please contact Dorothy Hoff (583-3231),
Ruth Auchtung (922-9282) or Pastor Tom or Pastor Sue
