Happy Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary!

(August 15, 2021)

“A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet” (today’s 1st Reading). “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be ful-filled” (today’s Gospel Reading). Tom Harmon, the father of Mark Harmon, actor on the long-running NCIS television series, was a pilot in WWII. During the war there was a bad week, when 25 U.S. Planes including Tom’s crashed in the same jungle. Tom was the only one from all those planes to make it back to civiliza-tion out of that remote and dangerous place. When asked how he did by reporters, he answered “Prayer!” Prayer invoking the intercession of Jesus and our moth-er, Mary. Tom said that during his trek out of the jungle he said “at least a million ‘Hail Marys’, actually yelling them at the top of his voice, “hoping that someone would hear me hollering.” Someone did. Our Blessed Mother did. She hears us too as she has everyone who invokes her in prayer for almost 2000 years. This feast reminds us that Mary is in heaven, soul and body. It also reminds us that Mary is not in heaven in a pas-sive way, just waiting for us to join her. No, she is ac-tively concerned about us. She wants to help us in our own struggle to reach heaven. We need only call out to her for help, as Tom Harmon did in the jungle. But we must do so with faith. Remember, Tom prayed at least a million ‘Hail Marys’ on his way out of danger. He also said he did so with “great faith.” Let us also do so. Mary was faithful to our Savior Jesus to the end of her mortal journey. Let us also do so. Welcome Fr. Michael Montoya, MJ! He is here to do the AOGH annual Mission Appeal on behalf of the Mis-sionaries of Jesus. He and the Missionaries of Jesus are most worthy to be here. Mike for giving me a chance for a little additional summer vacation and opportunity to finish a few routine Doctors’ visits. IMPORTANT NOTICES: We continue to invite you to bring in small photos and information contained in a white manila envelope given out earlier and still avail-able. We will place these on the Remembrance Wall, which was blessed at Mass on first Friday of this month. Our Pandemic Team strongly recommends that all pa-rishioners able to do so (and have not yet done so) get vaccinated with the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. The Church has approved these vaccines. Cardinal still recommends mask wearing at Church.

Dichosa tu que has creído, porque se cumplirá cuanto te fue anunciado de parte del Señor” (Evangelio de hoy). Tom Harmon, el padre de Mark Harmon, actor de la serie de televisión NCIS de larga duración, fue piloto en la Se-gunda Guerra Mundial. Durante la guerra hubo una se-mana mala, cuando 25 aviones estadounidenses, inclui-do el de Tom, se estrellaron en la misma jungla. Office of Child and Youth Protection The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston’s Office of Child and Youth Protection requires CMG Safe Haven online compliance training. This consists of 3 vignette style train-ing videos lasting approximately 60 minutes. For non-employees and employees completing 5 year renewal, a criminal background check will be submitted at the end of the training. -All individuals must complete the training and complete a background check prior to the start of employment, ministry service, and organization participation. -All individuals are required to complete the 5 year renew-al training before the expiration date of the prior training. If compliance is not met then the individual may be re-moved from employment or any ministry service or organ-ization participation. Please know that Immaculate Heart of Mary Church is mandated by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to uphold CMG connect a web-based platform that will assist us to ensure that all volunteers who are entrusted with children are trained well. Therefore, all of our volunteers 18+ must complete a volun-teer background check and register through CMG Connect for online training in order to be compliant and eligible to work with children. We take this program very seriously as we realize that our children are price-less gifts from God. Our Religious Education Office will assist you in regis-tering.
