Sharing and caring - Karen Parkhill does it allKaren L. Parkhill’s story is one worth sharing. As the Vice Chairman and CFO of Comerica, Ms. Parkhill

has traveled a path filled with strong messages and lessons that have helped sustain her and her family over the years.

She comes from humble beginnings and in hearing how she has become one of the top female executives in the country; one can‘t help but be inspired and hopeful that the future will be much brighter for more women as they attempt to climb the corporate ladder.

Even today she finds herself the only female in rooms with powerbrokers and she advocates for diversity, encouraging the hiring of women and building ethnically diverse teams.

“One of my passions is to have diversity,” she explained. “I don’t want to be the only one in the room!”

A member of Comerica’s Management Policy Committee and the Comerica Bank Board of Directors, Ms. Parkhill was the speaker for the Empower Series presented by the National Association of Black Accountants - DFW, last week at Cedar Valley College.

Speaking to a packed house of college students, NABA members and guests, Ms. Parkhill talked about her hero, her father, who she said wanted a better and different life than the one he had growing up.

Her father was the eldest of five and his father was an alcoholic and very abusive, she said. “He couldn’t hold a job, couldn’t pay the rent and barely put food on the table,” she continued. “The family lived in a three room shack with rats and the majority of my dad’s childhood stories are so painful that he rarely talked about them.”

One thing he did talk about, however, was the importance of a strong education and he led by example, by eventually becoming a “highly-respected” orthopedic surgeon and helping his siblings to achieve.

Ms. Parkhill said she grew up with the mindset that she had a limitless future. Born and raised as a staunch Catholic in Springfield, IL; she also thought that she would one day be a veterinarian, missionary and a saint, but that wasn’t the case.

Her career began as an analyst at a boutique investment bank in Dallas. From there she returned to her alma mater, Southern Methodist University (SMU) for her MBA and then her next step was joining JP Morgan as an investment banker.

At JP Morgan is where she said she “grew up,” moving from Associate to Vice President to Managing Director, all through various mergers with Chase and then Bank One.

She joined Comerica in August 2011 and shortly thereafter assumed the role of CFO, with direct management of finance, including accounting business finance, investor relations, treasury and economics.

The mother of three, Ms. Parkhill attributes much of her success to “base-level smarts, the ethic of hard work and some luck along the way.” She also is comforted knowing that she is supported by her husband and her “village.”

Oftentimes women will ask can they have it all. It helps when you have a strong support system in all arenas and according to Ms. Parkhill, that’s exactly what she has.

Dealing with everything from being a minority in a male-dominated industry and balancing family and work to accessing capital and handling ethical dilemmas; Ms. Parkhill provided encouragement and words of wisdom.

Acknowledging that she has had challenges and made some tough decisions, Ms. Parkhill said she believes in doing the right thing, “no matter what.” Her colleagues know her as “someone who is down-to-earth, a leader who understands, cares and is truly interested.”

A national trustee for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Ms. Parkhill joins a list of impressive speakers like Dr. Dennis Kimbro, Irv Ashford Jr., Judge Melodee Armstrong, Valerie Cole, Vincent Marchione and Calvin Golden, who have brought a wealth of information to Empower Series attendees.

Too often people go through doors that they shut and bolt behind them, Her story belongs in a book. She is an inspiration to all because at her very core is a caring spirit that believes in servant leadership. It’s refreshing to know that there are women who are lifting as they climb, as is the case with Karen L. Parkhill!

The Empower Series began in 2011 to focus on financial literacy, with Comerica as the presenting sponsor. On January 25, Jarlene DeCay, Dean of Student Success at Cedar Valley College will discuss successful planning and guidance for college. Another dynamic woman, Ms. DeCay will share tips on everything from writing entrance essays, to accessing financial aid.

In the meantime, make sure that like Karen you have found something that you are passionate about and that you realize the importance of lifting as you climb!

Statement from The Urban League of Greater Dallas Regarding the Video Released by Project Veritas Concerning Affordable Care Act Navigators

We would like to directly address the video footage released by Project Veritas featuring footage from our Dallas and Irving offices and clarify the edited video that has been placed online and distributed to a number of media outlets.

The Urban League of Greater Dallas does not condone, nor would we ever sanction, misleading the public or any individual who seeks our assistance about any issue, and particularly in this case, an issue as critical as health care.

Our organization has taken immediate steps to address the actions of the identified employees and investigate the full context of

what occurred in our Dallas and Irving offices.  We are also requesting a copy of the unedited footage of the entire videotaped encounters.

The part-time receptionist trainee shown in the Irving office was not, nor had ever been, authorized to speak on behalf of The Urban League of Greater Dallas, or as a Navigator, and represented her personal opinion, not that of our organization.

As such and as a result of our investigation thus far, her employment with The Urban League of Greater Dallas has been terminated.

In addition, we support actions by the Department of Health & Human Services to decertify the three Navigators-in-training featured in the video, and The Urban League of Greater Dallas

has suspended these employees until further notice.

It is our policy to provide correct and factual information about all programs in which we participate, or in the absence of information, to provide referrals to the agencies or organizations that are adequately prepared to address or answer those questions.

As a recent recipient of the Affordable Health Care Navigation Grant, our staff who will serve as Navigators are currently undergoing extensive training that will not be complete for another 10 days.

We take our responsibility as an organization training and deploying Navigators seriously, and as such, our organization has not authorized any of our employees to operate as Navigators at this point.  While this information was conveyed to the undercover

applicant and corrective comments were made – in the presence of the undercover applicant – regarding some of the instructions provided by these individuals, unfortunately the full context of these comments is not reflected in the video.

We have made Navigator training a high priority to ensure that all staff working at the Navigator sites are trained and qualified to assist the many people who seek health care.  We will not sit idly or silently as agenda-driven individuals operating under false pretenses attempt to undermine our efforts to serve those who need it most.   We are proud of our work on behalf of the Greater Dallas community and remain committed to the thousands of underserved individuals and families that the Urban League of Great Dallas serves each year.

Urban League remains committed despite media coverage

Veasey "les and announces  support of Democratic LeadershipCongressman Marc Veasey filed for re-election in the Democratic primary in Congressional District 33. Veasey, who won election to Congress in 2012, has won recog-nition as a strong and effective advocate for his constituents and one of the young rising stars among Democrats in Congress. "I am proud of the work we have accomplished in this first year and I am excited for the opportunity to continue working on behalf of the constituents of CD33.  I will continue fighting to protect seniors, bring jobs to the district and keep a strong safety net in place so that those struggling have an opportunity to improve their lives,” said Congressman Veasey.  “Certainly the fight to protect the voting rights of Texans will remain a top priority.  And, throughout this year, we have had a healthy dialogue about the urgent need for comprehensive immigration

reform.  Now, it’s time to move forward and make immigration reform a reality,” he continued. Congressman Veasey serves on the Armed Services Committee and the Science, Space, and Technology Committee – both key committees that have direct impact on Texas families.  Veasey has worked diligently and effective with all members of his commit-tees and within his caucus to earn the respect and friendship of his colleagues and leadership in the House, who praise efforts on behalf of north Texas.

“Congressman Marc Veasey is a rising star in Congress, a leader in the fight to protect voting rights and create jobs, and a champion for comprehensive immigration reform," said House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. "Here in Washington, Marc puts the needs of North Texas first – always willing to work across the aisle and collaborate with his colleagues to make a difference. It is safe to say that Marc’s first year in Congress has proven him to be responsive to his constituents and effective as a Member of the United States Congress.”

This should be another banner year for boys’ high school hoops in the metroplex. And several schools could be embarking on “the road to glory’’ by season’s end next March. As a matter of fact, it shouldn’t be a surprise if a local school once again walked away with the state title in each of the top three classifications.

The area is loaded with a nationally-ranked team (Prime Prep Academy, which is No. 5 in the nation) as well as several other teams such as AAA Academy, DeSoto, Plano West, Kimball, SOC, Madison, Lancaster and Lincoln that are on the verge.

Last week’s season-opening battle between AAA Academy and Prime Prep was a real showcase for what’s to come. An overflow, standing-room-only crowd showed up at the MAC (AAA Academy home gymnasium) for the highly anticipated matchup. In fact, the hype and excitement surrounding the game had the crowd wrapped around the building until halftime trying to get inside.

By the way, Prime Prep handed AAA Academy its first home loss (82-68) at the MAC. That victory came on the heels of a 6-point road win at highly-rated Houston Yates earlier in the week for Prime Prep, which is led by point-guard Emmanuel Mudiay, who is considered a top five national recruit.

“That was a good learning experience for us,’’ said AAA Academy coach Tim Singleton. “Our goal remains the same as it was before that game. We want to win the state championship. And this will only make us better and stronger as the season goes on.’’

That matchup may well have been a glimpse into the future. Charter schools such as AAA Academy and Prime Prep, along with private schools such as Dallas Jesuit and Houston Strake Jesuit could be changing the landscape of future high school hoops in the state. In fact, the top player in the state last season _ Julius Randle _ played for a private school (Prestonwood).

And AAA Academy became the first charter school to win a UIL state championship last season.

Meanwhile, Prime Prep dropped out of the UIL and plays a national schedule. And at the end of the

season, Prime Prep could earn an invitation to a national tournament, which crowns the winner as the mythical national champions. Prime Prep got as far as the semifinal round last season. By the way, UIL schools are not allowed to participate in the event.

“We have a game plan…a road map, if you will,’’ said Leroy McClure, CEO/Superintendent at AAA Academy. “We’re in the second stage right now, and we’re sticking to our plans. So, as it goes along, it does give us a sense of accomplishment because we’re succeeding beyond the limits of our hopes and dreams.’’

McClure also pointed out that he doesn’t mind AAA Academy being at the forefront of change in plotting this new course and landscape, while navigating through these unchartered waters in high school basketball.

“We have a PDSA model that we live by,’’ McClure said. “We plan, we do, we study and we make adjustments. And this model is not just for basketball, but our entire organization. That model is based on four pillars _ impeccable clarity, unwavering focus, tenacious discipline and deep engagement.

“We always keep the end in mind. We’re not just focused on the now. It doesn’t bother me that people think of AAA Academy as a basketball school. We look forward to proving otherwise. We know what we’re about and what we stand for. And it’s not just basketball, it’s our entire concept. At the end of the day, it’s our goal to not only get kids to college, but through college.’’

It’s a concept that is going to change the culture of high school basketball if it hadn’t already. High school basketball continues to evolve and move at a warped speed pace from the traditional old-school days.

Part of that change already has occurred with the un-precedented

move by AAA Academy from Class 1A to Class 3A in a year before realignment. That once again shows how quickly times are a changing. It should create even more excitement in the area with AAA Academy forging new rivalries with Madison, Wilmer

Hutchins and Roosevelt.

Heck, maybe one day they’ll even get to play in the DISD Coca Cola Christmas tournament, which could further raise the excitement and anticipation for the continued rise in high school hoops in the metroplex.

“We look forward to this new challenge,’’ McClure said. “Our goals haven’t changed. We set out to win the state last year and we did it.

That’s our goal again this year. I know we have a target on our back, but we welcome that challenge.

“We believe that we’re better than anybody on our schedule, but we’re not going to boast about it. Our goal is to be the best team in the metroplex, which would place us among the best in the state.’’

By Hazel Trice Edney

(TriceEdneyWire.com) – The chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, a federation of more than 200 Black-owned newspapers, says the Washington Redskins’ team – under fire from a Richmond, Va. publisher – is in sync with the entire National Football League in its apparent oppressive treatment of Black businesses and consumers.

“It’s almost a slave mentality. They put us on the field and we entertain the master but we’re not reaping any benefits from the business side of it,” Cloves Campbell says. “It’s not just the Redskins. If you look around the country, the NFL as a whole pretty much neglects Black businesses and the Black community,” said Campbell, publisher of the Arizona Informant Newspaper.

He continued, “Here in Arizona, our Arizona Cardinals does zero with the Black community. Every now and then they might show up for a token Black event. But, I don’t see our African-American newspaper here in Phoenix or in Arizona being supported by the Arizona Cardinals. I believe if you called other newspapers that have [teams] in their markets, I don’t believe they’re doing much for them either. I believe the NFL as a whole takes the Black community for granted although we are their major product on the field.”

Campbell was responding to questions pertaining to a conflict between NNPA member Ray Boone, editor/publisher of the award-winning Richmond Free Press, and the Richmond-based Washington Redskins Training Camp, which is partially owned by Bon Secours Health System.

In a letter to NAACP Chairman Roslyn Brock and CC’d to Campbell, Boone states that the team contracted no business with Black-owned or locally owned businesses at its first Richmond training camp between July 25 and August 16. That includes the failure to advertise in the Black-owned Richmond Free Press while advertising with the White-owned conservative daily, the Richmond

Times Dispatch which has a history of pro-segregation leadership. The conflict is steeped in an age-old battle constantly waged by Black newspapers, which are historic targets for advertising discrimination.

While Bon Secours placed paid advertisements for the training camp in the Times Dispatch, the Free Press was sent press releases, Boone said in an interview.

Brock, who has served as NAACP chair since 2010, is vice president for advocacy and government relations for the Bon Secours Health System, Inc., in Marriottsville, Md. Boone believes her corporate position has caused her to compromise her stance for economic justice in the Richmond case.

“Bon Secours, along with Mayor Dwight C. Jones and the Washington team, blatantly denied, contrary to the Mayor’s pledge, black businesses and other local businesses the opportunity to receive vendor contracts inside the training camp,” Boone wrote in a Sept. 27 letter to Brock. “Characteristic of Richmond government and big businesses, this Bon Secours decision disgracefully enhanced Richmond’s shameful reputation as ‘The Capital of Poverty,’ with 25 percent of Richmond’s population suffering in poverty.”

When Brock had not responded to his letter for more than a month, Boone followed up with a Nov. 1 email pointing out, “This raises the unavoidable question of whether Bon Secours is restricting you from living up to your responsibility to honor the NAACP mission?”

He continued, “In the interest of fairness and the image of the NAACP, I respectfully suggest that you break your silence.”

Brock responded to Boone by email that same day, stating, “The matter you reference in your letter is local in nature and should be handled directly by the Richmond Branch NAACP and Salim Khalfani at the Virginia State Conference NAACP. I have

forwarded your correspondence to them and shared the information with the leadership of Bon Secours Health System in Richmond.”

In an email, responding to a question from the Trice Edney News Wire this week, Brock said that she had not publically commented on Boone’s complaint because it is a local issue.

Brock’s email said she had “also discussed the matter in detail with” Campbell, who is serving his second term as NNPA chairman. At a Sept. 17 reception in D.C., Campbell, Boone and other NNPA publishers praised Brock for her leadership and gave her an award for social justice.

While Campbell verbally blistered the NFL, including the Redskins, he balanced his response by saying he agrees with Brock that the issue in Boone’s case is local since the economic decisions appear to have been made by the mayor and Bon Secours’ Richmond entities.

“At the end of the day, I think [the criticism of her] is unfair just because she works for Bon Secours. That’s her day job. We all volunteer at some time with the NAACP,” Campbell says, referring to Brock’s volunteer chairmanship. “While we want to see Mr. Boone and his publication get what it deserves and more so; that is definitely a local issue.”

Boone, who recently announced he has stopped using the term “Redskins” in the Richmond Free Press because it is “racist”, argues that the Redskins’

and Bon Secours’ exclusion of Black businesses underscores and illustrates the team’s mentality under the controversial name, which is receiving growing national pressure for change.

In her email to the Trice Edney News Wire, Brock also clarified that the NAACP has long stood against the Redskins name because of its roots in racism. “The NAACP passed a resolution more than ten years ago against racial slurs being used as mascots. In the last few months the NAACP signed on letters with the Oneida Tribe, based in Washington and the National Coalition on American Tribes especially in support of their efforts to change the Redskins name,” she wrote.

Neither Mayor Dwight C. Jones; nor Virginia NAACP President King Salim Khalfani could be reached for comment by deadline. Bon Secours representatives did not return repeated phone calls.

Meanwhile, Boone, a recipient of the State NAACP’s Oliver W. Hill Freedom Fighter Award, remains focused on his quest for economic justice, promising Brock “fairness and balance” in upcoming coverage of her leadership positions with the NAACP and Bon Secours.

Such economic battles have been hard fought in Richmond and in Black and grassroots communities across the nation. Former Richmond City Councilman Chuck Richardson, known for his historic advocacy for Black businesses and contractors, recalls researching Washington Redskins’ racism as far back as 1961.

That’s when he wrote a research paper in junior high school about the team and how the Redskins was “the last professional football team to allow Blacks to play for them,” he said in an interview. “This harkens back to that painful time. It hurt then and I would have thought that a greater degree of change might have occurred, but the mentality still exists. It seems so much has changed and yet so much remains the same.”

By James A. Washington

For most of my life, I have to admit to you that bible study was nowhere near my thing. I was blessed however, to grow up around relatives who lived the life rather than preach about it or pontificate a reality their lives never represented.

Today, I am constantly moved by the Holy Spirit to see the simplicity of truth in the scripture I now study. I find myself gravitating to ministers, pastors, bishops and saints as they dissect in sermon and prayer, the incredible power of the tongue; yes that small but dangerously lethal missile contained in your mouth and mine.

I have had recent experience with the positive and negative power of what I say; some intentional but most unintentional. I’m just talking. Some say, “I’m just sayin.” Even without biblical perspective, history confirms the ability of deceit filled oratory to entice weak men to murder, married women to stray, prideful men to war and peace loving men to slaughter.

On a daily basis, a reckless, misguided tongue can singe forever the innocent spirit of a child, a wanting spouse, a caring friend or a concerned co-worker.

How powerful is it when all you need is a sincere ‘I’m sorry’, or an unexpected ‘thank you’ or a genuine, ‘I believe in you,’ and you actually get it from someone you need to hear it from? James 3:10 lets us know that the tongue, your tongue, wields both the power of life and death. Having been the target of ill intended criticism and some unintended slights and having killed a few souls of some people I hold dear, I know firsthand that James was and is so right. I am

trying to correct this character flaw by being consciously uplifting as often as I can be. It helps to think of myself as a vessel of the Living God, before I speak.

It is not always easy to remember that we are made in God’s own image and cursing man, any man is tantamount to cursing God. Could it be that James 1:26 is a key to understanding the true nature of which I speak? “…If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless…”

I submit to you that if you compare the words of Christ to those of any demagogue, you will find the Lord’s words will easily repulse those words that are rooted in hatred, gossip, rumor and innuendo. It is impossible to love God without loving Jesus as the Living Word of God. Saying so, merely confirms this truth.

In this case, the spoken word can and will set you free. “Reckless words pierce like a sword but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:14. Unfortunately, there is no cure for hurt feelings. All we can do is think before we speak and offer honest and sincere apologies when we damage another person with what we say. But this weapon we have in our mouths needs to be understood for the power it holds and the power it conveys.

But please do not take my word for it. “He who guards his lips guards his life; but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.” Proverbs 12:3.

May God bless and keep you always.

James

Ask Alma!

He Won’t Let Me Visit

His HouseDear Alma,

I have been dating “David” for over eight months, but I have never been to his house. Every time I bring it up, he changes the subject or comes up with a lame excuse. I’m not sure what to think. He will stay with me for weeks at a time, so I don’t think he’s involved with someone else. I’m confused.

Hello, Confused,This situation occurs more often than

you might imagine. I’ve heard it pondered by countless co-workers and plenty of sister-friends. I’m not going to make this long and drawn out. Bottom line: I suspect he doesn’t have a home.

You guys are kickin’ it at your house because…

No. 1: He might be married. I’m sure you’ve wondered the same thing. Or, he may be separated and still living with the wife.

No. 2: He could be living with his mom. Most men would hide this temporary, oh-I’m-just-passing-thru situation.

No. 3: He could be homeless. It’s tough out there nowadays, with the economy the way it is.

Maybe he’s stretching when it comes to his living conditions – a few weeks at your house, a few weeks at another woman’s house and a few weeks with his mom. Trying to pull together a security deposit and first month’s rent ain’t easy.

I find it more disheartening that, after eight months, you haven’t said to him point-blank, “Take me to your crib.” He’s definitely hiding something, but you aren’t being honest, either…with yourself. You haven’t made a fuss because you really don’t want to know. Truth is easier to deal with when we deny it. This is real simple. The next time he comes by, ask him. But make sure you’re ready for the answer.

At the Movies

Jamille

By Jamille Bradfield

Written and directed by Malcolm D. Lee, THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY reunites the entire 1999 original all-star cast featuring Taye Diggs (Harper), Morris Chestnut (Lance), Monica Calhoun (Mia), Nia Long (Jordan), Terrence Howard (Quentin), Harold Perrineau (Julian), Regina Hall (Candace), Melissa De Sousa (Shelby) and adds new cast member, Eddie Cibrian (Brian) to the talent mix.

The film opens with a clever sequence of key dramatic scenes from THE BEST MAN. Whether you have never seen the original film or you did see it, but it’s been a while, the opening montage

serves as a Cliff ’s Notes version of the

main storyline to refresh your memory and/or bring you up to speed. Next, the story segues to the present day, 15 years later, with acclaimed author and NYU professor, Harper Stewart contemplating his next literary project. He has not experienced best-selling success since he penned, Unfinished Business — the book that single-handedly destroyed Lance’s trust in Harper because of

the revelation that Mia, Lance’s

wife, cheated on him with Harper during their engagement.

Harper’s latest manuscript has just been rejected, he has been laid off from his faculty position at NYU, he is facing mounting financial woes due to costly fertility treatments and he and his wife, Robin are expecting their first child on New Year’s Eve.

In an attempt to avoid putting stress on Robin, a professional chef, who has been diagnosed with a high-risk pregnancy, Harper does not tell her that he lost his job. Meanwhile, he has been ignoring invitation’s from his old friend, Mia, to spend the Christmas holidays with the Sullivan family.

That is until he gets the idea to approach Lance, who is

THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY

is a must-see

planning to retire from the New York Giants after this season, about doing his biography in a last ditch effort to save his writing career. For self-serving reasons Harper has a change of heart, and he and Robin accept Mia’s invitation.

When Harper and Robin arrive at Mia and Lance’s sprawling mansion, they are greeted by Mia, the hostess of all hostesses with the spirit of an angel, and Lance, the God-fearing, family-oriented, pro athlete who is warm to Robin, but sarcastic and ice cold to Harper.

After all these years, it is abundantly clear Lance still has not gotten over Harper and Mia’s transgression.

The tension between Lance and Harper sets the stage for what will undoubtedly be a long and uncomfortable visit.

Soon after, the other guests arrive and the whole crew is, for better or worse, back together again. Jordan is a high-powered, independent, I-am-woman-hear-me-roar entertainment executive who is in an interracial relationship with Brian.

Julian is a headmaster at a school that has just lost its major benefactor due to his ex-stripper

wife, Candace’s questionable past.

Rounding out the bunch is the lone bachelor, Quentin aka “Q,” the successful troublemaking, brand guru who chases women like it’s an Olympic sport.

And last, but certainly not least, is Shelby, Julian’s ex, the self-acclaimed diva who is now a single mother and the star of the hit reality TV series “The Real Housewives of Westchester.”

As friendships (and rivalries) are renewed, relationships are tested and old wounds are reopened, the Sullivan’s lavish home, which serves as the primary setting for the majority of the film, quickly morphs into soap opera central providing venues for everything from hot and heavy love-making sessions, to a musical performance

to a good, old-fashioned Jerry Springer Show-style girl fight.

You will have to go see the film to find out what happens next, but overall Malcolm Lee should be applauded for this cinematic masterpiece. THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY is an early gift for ALL audiences.

Although the ensemble cast is all African-American except

Cibrian who is Caucasian, the movie should in no way, shape or form be labeled a “Black film.” This is an American story about love, hope, forgiveness and friendship. It is about relationships and issues that people regardless of race, gender, age, faith, socioeconomic status or sexual orientation deal with everyday.

The scenes that make African-Americans laugh and cry will be the same scenes that make Anglo-Americans, Latinos, Asians and Native Americans laugh and cry. Lee’s skillful storytelling lends to a brilliant script and his vision for the sequel produced a film that in many ways has topped the original movie – a rare feat in Hollywood.

THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY, rated R (for language, sexual content and brief nudity), is an instant classic and is destined to become a permanent part of America’s holiday collection once it is released on DVD.

Pair it with the film’s incredible soundtrack, and you will have yourself one heck of a Merry Christmas present for years to come. The romantic-dramedy, which has a running time of two hours and two minutes, opened nationwide in theaters on November 15, 2013. “One of the best films of the year!”5 reels out of 5,

Restore Together

Restore Together: Urban Ministry in the Context of Technology and Energy in the 21st Century by Dr. Louis Hutchinson III is rightfully perceived as an extension of King’s Poor People’s Campaign. In it is a roadmap to collaborative reconciliation for the church, the individual, organizations, and corporations to come together and end social injustice. And, at its core, lies a vehicle with which we are intimately acquainted: technology.

“There is a ‘digital secularization,’ the immoral use of technology that exploits the people, systems, and the social and natural environment across the world, in need of a humanizing, moral revolution,” says Dr. Hutchinson. “As a civilization, we are at a crossroads. We can either let technology continue to exasperate the oppression of the less fortunate, or harness it as a tool to propel them to greater heights.”

Restore Together reflects the cause that bares its namesake: a foundation with an accessible, multilingual digital platform extending the ability of the church, help organizations, government, corporations and individuals to provide care, advocacy and services through a sacrificial and global

coalition. All the proceeds of Restore Together will be donated to this end, fueling the initiative to address worldwide areas of systemic injustice. In thoughtful, provocative rhetoric, Restore Together will explore the following themes:

Theology of the City: the challenges faced in the 21st century throughout global urbanization, with particular attention to the restoration, transformation, reconciliation and spiritual liberation of its inhabitants

Digital Secularization, theology of social change: neo-colonialism has silently integrated and systematically evolved to control all aspects of collective thought including commerce, government and entire cultures through a radical technology-driven digital secularization capable of impacting both developing countries and global superpowers.

What of the I-Generation?: Exploring how this generation learns and absorbs information differently than previous generations because of their access to technology and exposure to wireless mobile devices, and their ability to achieve positive and collaborative social change rapidly and globally.

Sacrificial Love: The sacrificial solution that will heal institutional sin such as oppression and poverty is at the very foundation of our existence.  It is the most powerful thought ever conceived. It is the very nucleus of who God is, what God does, and what God desires.  The solution is the central and unending presence of one word, LOVE.

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

Bailey HutchisonGrade: C

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

theadminis-

tration willadopt the productive,

responsible approach to ournation’s challenges thatAmericansdeserve.”(The office of John Cornyn of

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.
