Fake Checks & Scams

When you open your mailbox and find a letter stating that you just won a foreign lottery, think twice before you break into your happy dance! The letter may look authentic and the cashier’s check appears genuine, but don’t be fooled. To receive your lottery winnings, it states all you have to do is deposit the check and wire the money to the sender to pay the taxes and fees. The checks may contain authentic-looking watermarks. Even though the bank and routing number on the check may be real, the check still can be fake. And there is no way to get your money back! The Federal Trade Commission accepts complaints related to many topics, including identity theft, telemarketing scams, credit scams, sweepstakes, lotteries, and prizes. To submit a consumer complaint, go to https://www.ftc.gov/complaint.
