Before we can begin to study Geography, we must understand the 5 Themes.
The 5 Themes serve as the main framework for studying Geography
You will know WHAT to write today because it will be in yellow
To help us remember the 5 Themes, we have an acronym…

Nothing to write here, no yellow…see?? Easy huh? Just listen for a moment while I explain.
The First Theme: Location

Two types of LocationAbsolute Location – exact place on Earth where a geographic feature is found (example latitude/longitude or a street address)
Relative Location – describes a place in relation to another place (example I live behind the Starbucks.

The Second Theme: Place

Place – Physical features and cultural characteristics of a location. What does it look like? What language do the people speak? How do they dress? What kind of food do they eat?

The Fifth Theme Region: area with similar characteristics

Formal – A region that shares characteristics. Definite boundary lines. (ex: states, this classroom etc)
Functional – a set of places that is connected (bus route etc)
Perceptual – how one person sees this region it may be different than another person.
