The wonderful work presented here by SCAD illustration students not only illuminates, informs and entertains, it also has the “wow factor” that comes when we achieve international acclaim. And as our list of accolades, published here, shows, the illustration department has reached the very top of the league.
All the images featured here were created in response to professionally based assignments developed in the classroom. Some images were created for real clients, notably The New York Times, which recently commissioned the full-page illustration, "Fireflies," by B.F.A. illustration student Heather Carter. When this was published, the Times also ran an accompanying article highlighting the work of four other SCAD illustration students, and asked its readers which illustration they liked best. This question created a great deal of discussion on the newspaper’s website, and it confirmed that illustration continues to intrigue and delight audiences.
Our graduate students also feature prominently here as prize winners, and as the ground-breaking innovators they have become while studying at SCAD. Many of these students have taken the opportunity to explore the wonderful range of elective courses in other departments including motion media, printmaking, graphic design, fibers and animation. Illustration undergraduates, too, can choose to explore courses offered in many different SCAD majors. The sheer range of techniques and approaches featured in Illustrious is proof of this.
Adventurous, brave and talented minds have contributed to the truly collaborative spirit behind the projects we show here. The astonishingly high quality and professional- level work is a testament to the skills of students and of faculty. Illustration continues to be increasingly in demand in all the communication arts fields including publishing, film, animation and graphic design.
Everyone in the SCAD illustration team, whether based in Savannah, Hong Kong, Atlanta or online, invites you to experience the truly amazing “wow factor” work we present here.
