It’s my job to have something to say.

They pay me to provide wordsthat help make sense of that which

troubles the American soul.

But in this moment of airless shock

Page 7: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

when hot tears sting disbelieving eyes,

Page 8: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

the only thing I can find to say,

Page 9: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

the only words that seem to fit,

Page 10: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

must be addressed to the unknown author of this suffering.

Page 11: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

You monster.

Page 12: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

You beast.

Page 13: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

You unspeakable bastard.

Page 14: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

What lesson did you hope to teach us by your coward’s attack on our World Trade Center,

Page 15: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

our Pentagon,

Page 16: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

us?

Page 17: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

What was it you hoped we would learn?

PRESENTATION BY ED MILLER

Page 18: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

Whatever it was, please know that you failed.

Page 19: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

Did you want us to respect your cause?

Page 20: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

You just damned your cause.

Page 21: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

Did you want to make us fear?

Page 22: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

You just steeled our resolve.

Page 23: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

Did you want to tear us apart?

Page 24: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

You just brought us together.

Page 25: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

Let me tell you about my people.

Page 26: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

We are a vast and quarrelsome family,

Page 27: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

a family rent by racial, social, political and class division,

Page 28: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

but a family nonetheless.

Page 29: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

peace-loving and compassionate.

We are fundamentally

decent . . .

Page 30: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

We struggle to know the right thing and to do it.

Page 31: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

And we are,the overwhelming majority of us, people of faith . . .

believers in a just and loving God.

Page 32: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

Some people -- you, perhaps -- thinkthat any or all of this makes us weak.

Page 33: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

You’re mistaken. We are not weak.

Page 34: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

Indeed, we are strong in ways thatcannot be measured by arsenals.

Page 35: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

Yes, we’re in pain now. . .

We are in mourning and we are in shock.

Page 36: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

We’re still grappling with the unrealityof the awful thing you did.

Page 37: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

Both in terms ofthe awful scope oftheir ambition . . .

and the probable final death toll,

Page 38: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

your attacks are likely to go down as the worst acts of terrorism . . .

in the history of the United States, and, probably, the world.

Page 39: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

You’ve bloodied uslike we have never been bloodiedbefore.

Page 40: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

But there is a gulf of difference between making us bloody and making us fall.

Page 41: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

This is the lesson Japan was taught to its bitter sorrow the last time anyone hit us this hard,

Page 42: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

the last time anyone brought us suchabrupt and monumental pain.

Page 43: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

When roused, we are righteous in our

outrage, terrible in our force.

Page 44: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

When provoked by this level of barbarism . . .

We will bear any suffering,

Page 45: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

pay any cost . . .

go to any length,

Page 46: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

in the pursuit of justice.

Page 47: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

I tell you this without fear of

contradiction. . .

I know my people, as you, I think, do not.

Page 48: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

What I know reassures me. . .

It also causes me to tremble with dread of the future.

Page 49: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

We’ll go forward from this moment . . .

sobered, chastened, sad.

Page 50: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

Butdetermined, too.

Unimaginably determined.

Page 51: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

As Americans we will weep . . .

as Americans we will mourn,

Page 52: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

and as Americans, we will rise in defense

of all that we cherish.

Page 53: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

So I ask again:

What was it you hoped to teach us?

Page 54: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

It occurs to me that maybe you just wanted

us to know the depths of your hatred.

Page 55: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

If that’s the case, consider the

message received.

Page 56: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

And take this message in exchange:

Page 57: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

You don’t know my people.

Page 58: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

You don’t know what we’re capable of.

Page 59: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

You don’t know what you just started.

Page 60: ILLUSTRATION BY Mike Luckevich The Atlanta Constitution.

But you’re about to learn.
