The fixtures reduce energy consumption, are completely weatherproof and provide excellent illumination improving overall safety and security. The cost of the upgrade including installation was around $1800. Their projected energy savings are over $300/year per fixture and the payback period is under 3 years. With the Illuminate Strathcona program, this project would be eligible for a $900 grant. The 700 Block of Powell Street was under lit by public street lighting. Sunrise Soya Foods staff felt uncomfortable walking to their cars or the bus stop at night. They were frequently experiencing break- ins into their vehicles parked on the block. Assisted by the SBIA, Sunrise Soya Foods worked with the City of Vancouver to find a solution. Four street lamps on the block were upgraded to brighter LED fixtures for a total cost of $3080, paid by Sunrise Soya Foods and installed by the City. The cost per light fixture including installation was $770, The brighter lighting increased visibility and provided a greater sense of safety for employees at night time. With the Illuminate Strathcona program, this project would be eligible for a $1540 grant and the remaining cost could be split between multiple businesses on a block.
