    I l oan Farris Daniel J. Farris is the Director of Athletic Bands at Northwestern University, where he is responsible for conducting the "Wildcat" Marching Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band I fl and Basketball Band. He also teaches conducting, marching band techniques and secondary music education methods. Mr. Farris was recently appointed Director of Northwestern's National Summer High School Music Institute and will serve as I ~1 interim Coordinator of Jazz Studies and Pedagogy at NU next year. Mr. Farris has been a clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor in the United States and Canada. He holds degrees in Music Education from James Madison University in

    I rl Harrisonburg, VA, and The University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He is a member of the National Band Association, College Band Directors National Association, International Association of Jazz Educators and is an honorary member of I ,I Tau Beta Sigma/Kappa Kappa Psi. Larry Harms

    ~ A saxophonist and pianist of note, Larry Harms is one of the busiest musicians in :I ,, central Illinois. He is in demand as a performer and an educator. At Illinois Central College, Larry directs the jazz band and teaches numerous other music courses including music theory and jazz history. ·

    I fl · Kevin Hart

    I I I

    fl Kevin Hart is an active vibraphonist, pianist, and percussionist and has performed with his own groups and other artists at many venues and festivals in the Midwest. Kevin's Latin Jazz Quintet recorded "Corazon" in 1996; and his groups continue to perform throughout Illinois and are often heard on WGLT 89.1 FM. Kevin has performed and ll recorded with Bob Washut, Dave Hoffman, Jane Hartman, Brian Wilke, Dave Dreyer, Champaign Underground, and the Illinois Jazz Orchestra. Other performances with Illinois jazz treasures include Ron Bridgewater, Don Heider, John Scott, Jeff , fl Helgesen, Rachael Lee, Gaile Thomas, Bobby Broom, Zach Broch, Orbert Davis, and

    ~ Eric Schneider. In the last few years he has also performed on drums with Jack McDuff, Steve Turre, Hemy Butler, Jerry Bergonzi, Terrell Stafford, Jeff Newell, and Rufus Reid. Kevin is currently an instructor at Knox, Parkland, and Illinois Central ti Colleges.

  • I Dave Huber Dave Huber received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Illinois State University in 1994 and his Master of Music Education degree with an emphasis on I Jazz Studies and Technology Based Music Instruction from the University of Illinois in 1999. Since then Mr. Huber has taught at public schools, clinics and workshops throughout the state. As a bassist, he has been fortunate to have performed with Buddy DeFranco, Dennis DeBlasio, Steve Weist, Allen Vizzutti, Ed Soph and Marvin Stamm. Mr. Huber currently teaches music at Oak Grove School in Libertyville, Illinois.

    Todd Kelly Dr. Todd Kelly is Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Director of Jazz Ensembles at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Dr. Kelly teaches trumpet, directs the Bradley Jazz Ensembles and Jazz Combos, teaches Jazz Improvisation, Secondary Music Methods, and serves as the advisor for the Music Business program.

    Dr. Kelly holds the Doctor of Arts degree in trumpet performance from Ball State I University in Muncie, Indiana. While at Ball State, he was the assistant Director of the Jazz Studies program. Kelly received the Bachelor of Music Education degree with high honors from the University of Montana, -and the Master of Music degree in 11 Trumpet Performance from the University of Northern Colorado_.

    Dr. Kelly maintains a busy performing schedule in the Central Illinois area as a 1· member of the Todd Kelly Jazz Quintet and as a freelance jazz and classical musician. He is the musical director of the Central Illinois Jazz Orchestra, a big band comprised of seventeen of the finest musicians from the central Illinois area. He is in demand 1· throughout the Midwest as a clinician, adjudicator, and guest artist. Recently, he has been touring throughout the United States with India tabla artist Sandip Burman.

    Michael Flack I Michael Flack was born and raised in Arlington Heights, Illinois, where he began studying the piano at the age of 7. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Music I Education degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and attained Master of Arts and I · Doctor of Arts degrees from Ball State University. -Currently, he is the Director of Bands at College of Lake County, Illinois. ·

    Mike Flack performs regularly with the Chicago Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, John Burnett Swing Orchestra, and the David Jennings Acoustic Ensemble. Mike has recorded three compact discs: No Words (2002) with the David Jennings Acoustic Ensemble, Swinging in the Windy City (2002), featuring Buddy DeFranco with the John Burnett Swing Orchestra, and Labor Of Love ( 1999), with the Chicago Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra. He has played before national and international audiences, including the Macau International Music Festival in China.

    James Boitos, professor of saxophone

    IJames Boitos holds the Bachelor of Music Degree from Colorado State University, and a Master's from Northwestern University, where he studied with the legendary Dr. Frederick Hemke. Mr. Boitos is Professor of Music at Illinois State University, where he teaches saxophone. For more than two and a half decades, his jazz groups won

    individual and group awards at college jazz festivals throughout the country. Boitos was a featured soloist at the 5th World Saxophone Congress, London, the 6th World Saxophone Congress, Evanston, and the 7th World Saxophone Congress, Nuremburg.

    IMr. Boitos has also free-lanced with Pearl Bailey, Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams, Cab Calloway, Nancy Wilson, Louie Bellson, and many others. Bill Koehler, professor of double bass

    IBill Koehler is Professor of Music at Illinois State University where he teaches applied double bass, string pedagogy, graduate courses in music education including psychology of music, and improvisation. Dr. Koehler has performed in England,

    Belgium, Germany, Austria, Russia, Belo-Russia, Puerto Rico, and throughout the U.S. He is currently a freelance jazz bassist. Bill has completed a new Solo Bass CD entitled "Glimpse," featuring original compositions in jazz and world fusion idioms as well as classical pieces for unaccompanied solo bass.

    I Tom Marko, director of instrumental jazz studies Tom Marko is director of Instrumental Jazz Studies at Illinois State University. Dr.

    IMarko earned the Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance from Washington State University, the Master of Music degree in Jazz performance from the University of South Florida, and the Doctor of Arts degree at the University of Northern Colorado where he graduated in May of 2004. Tom has been a successful

    freelance musician in the Tampa Bay area, Myrtle Beach, SC, Fort Collins/Denver, CO and in Central Illinois. In the summer of 2001, Tom was one of 22 musicians invited from across the U.S. to participate in the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Academy with

    l artistic director Christian McBride.

    Charles Stokes, music theory coordinator Charles Stokes has been· a member of the School of Music faculty since 197 4, where l he serves as coordinator of the music theory program. Most recently, he has established new courses in jazz music theory and jazz-rock aural skills to be part of the required curriculum for music majors at Illinois State. He has been active through out
