…to Mario Pelusi, Director of the Illinois Wesleyan School of Music, for helping me to put a foundation in place for this ensemble, and for his unwavering support.

…to Tim Pitchford, Director of the School of Music’s Jazz Ensembles, for his collegiality and for generously inviting vocalists to share the stage with his ensembles.

…to Scott Ferguson, Director of the School of Music’s choirs, for his willingness to allow me to introduce to students a new style of vocal music, and for supporting the addition of this ensemble to the School’s vocal music tradition.

…to Jane Smolen, Senior Operations Coordinator for the School of Music, for all of her help with the “behind the scenes” work. Jane’s help in securing music, rehearsal space, and rehearsal time, has been invaluable.

…to all of the members of School of Music’s faculty for their enthusiastic support of my work and of the work of our ensembles members.

…to Minji Will, Chris Cooper, and Tess Johnson for the excellent work that they have done in creating this concert program.

…to Kate Reid and Jeremy Fox, for the time and guidance that you have given to Unlicensed Syncopation. Without a doubt, the ensemble has benefitted from their expertise and feedback!

…to the Illinois Wesleyan University students who are members of this ensemble, whether vocalists, instrumentalists, or sound technicians. Their dedication to this ensemble is helping to establish solid groundwork for the future of vocal jazz at IWU.

Unlicensed Syncopation, Illinois Wesleyan University’s newest vocal ensemble, focuses on the practice and performance of jazz and other Contemporary Commercial Music styles, and is open to any interested students across the IWU campus. Directed by Andrew Dahan, the ensemble was founded in spring semester of 2015. The ensemble rehearses twice a week, and performs a few times each semester. Unlicensed Syncopation is proud to be representing Illinois Wesleyan University by performing at the Illinois Music Education Conference (IMEC) in January 2016.

Andrew Dahan is the current Head of Music Education at Illinois Wesleyan University. He was formerly the Director of Choirs at Addison Trail High School (Addison, IL) before embarking on coursework for the PhD in Music Education at the University of Miami (Coral Gables, FL). As an ensemble director and educator, Andrew Dahan has had the privilege of serving as director or assistant director for various DownBeat award-winning vocal jazz ensembles at the University of Miami (Coral Gables, FL), as well as directing various ILMEA District Vocal Jazz Ensembles, and has presented his research – related to vocal jazz ensemble rehearsal techniques and vocal jazz education history – at state- and national-level conferences over the past several years. He has served as a clinician at high schools and festivals around the Midwest.

As a performer, he has sung the National Anthem at Miami Heat Games and performed as a background vocalist for such notable performers as George Benson, Gloria Estefan, Ben Folds, Carmen Lundy, Raul Midón, and Steve Miller. For four seasons, Dahan has sung with the Grant Park Chorus (Chicago, IL) under the direction of Christopher Bell and Carlos Kalmar. He currently sings with Central Vocal Time, a vocal jazz quintet made up of music educators and performers from around Illinois.
