of his music is handled as well. “i do mu-sic for the love of it but it’s important to take care of the business side. My team and i do research on local music. My team is crown Plaza and Team rebel. sometimes there’s a lot going on and i need their help. i have to say that Team rebel and crown Plaza do an excellent job at helping me. i try to be equal by doing as much, if not more than what i expect them to do. i have reasonable expectations of the people that i work with. it’s about having a family oriented business.”

dontae currently has three singles out. Money Machine, Feel better, and back to Trappin. his single diamonds More Than Gold (sold through datpiff) has sold 12 thousand copies. Although dontae feels like this is a good start at home, it’s im-portant for 757 artist to lead to hit the road and to establish your name some-where else too. “before you can grow as an artist you have to grow as an indi-vidual .it’s about advancement as a man first. Then you really have to put out a respectable project. i consider myself to be authentic and real and i realize that with any business word of mouth is one of the best forms of advertise-ment.” in other words dontae believes that people should be able to listen to your music and want to tell someone else about it.

There’s more to dontae that people knew. how about he’s currently working on a movie with a with the local film-maker in the area. “i’ve been reading other scripts as well. i would like to score music soundtracks and i’m currently ex-ploring writing music for film.”

dontae would like to give a shout out to

if you are wonder what dontae has been up to, here ya go:

he is currently working on a new mixtape called Notorious in the city. he’s been at-tending open mics and working on book-

ing shows. last summer dontae opened up for Juicy J and Project Pat. dontae admits that he stays busy and he is definitely looking for management. he is focused on becoming independent artist. in fact, he just finished getting his business straight with AscAP. dontae believes that the market is there (to become an independent artist) but it is up to the artist as to how they are going to thrive in it. i plan on being on the sunday spotlight. i have 5 phones prepared because i’m going to go hard.

At ill Magazine we like to get the inside scoop. We tried to get dontae to spill the beans about his top secret dVd project that he’s been working on. We were able to learn that dontae’s dVd project will be released on september 19, 2013. dontae did tell us that he believes that his fans are going to respond well to this project. dontae says that many artist only use the internet and sites like re-verbnation to build their fan base. he tries to approach marketing from a different lane and avoid solely using the internet to market his music.

You may not have know but dontae has been around for quite a while. “i have a different type of respect in the streets. A lot of people know that i rap but don’t know that i still rap. i’ve been focused on taking care of my family. i just had baby in April and my brother just passed away and i’m helping to care for his kids too and .”

While talking to dontae it became clear that he is extremely focused and sees the impor-tance of making sure that the business side

Jason braye from radio ready studios, Kino beats who is an engineer and one of the owners at radio ready studios. dontae says that he is motivated by Kino because he used to be in a room at his moms house and now he has a state of the art recording studio. dontae knows that if he stays focused he can accomplish these things as well. “What i do is i take bits and pieces of other people who are successful and it motivates me.”

dontae has worked with dJ scuff, from chesapeake; Milo Austin, from richmond; Munch, from First class; Kino beatz and Jason braye; and young roc, from New York. Although he has collaborated with several local artist there are still some that he looks forward to working with like swiggz, Voe black, Peso dollar, horse clydesdale, stu Money, sK, and Joe mafia.

dontae can be contacted at dirtydon757@ gmail.comre-verbNation/dirtydon on instagram @dirtydon757 on Twit-ter @dirtydon757 and on Facebook/ygddiamonddon. his videos can be found on Youtube. Just look up teddy bear

sincere was born and raised in New-port News, Virginia. Although he is a rapper, his career interest include acting and getting involved in tel-evision and film. our discussion al-

lowed me to see first hand how personable and easy to talk to sincere is. in fact, i would even say that he seems as sincere as his name. he definitely comes across as someone who is dedicated to his craft. sincere describes himself a someone who plans to have a long and successful career in entertainment and we wish him nothing but the best!

how long have you been pursuing a career in music? sincere has been in hip-hop for the past 10 years.

What separates you from other artists ? i like to talk about things that people afraid to talk about. i discuss relationships, court situations, and jail. My life is pretty much an open book.

What projects are you currently working on? i currently have a mixtape out on datpiff.com.

how do you feel about the music that is cur-rently on the radio? it all sounds the same and it sounds as if it is written by the same person.

What do you do to keep your music fresh? Well i keep it straightforward and i keep a nice flow. i like to mix it up and yet, make sure that i make it catchy.

What about people who are not into hip-hop, would they like your music? i believe that they would. i have the ability to make someone happy and feel good. That causes them to reminisce.

do you feel as though your music is commer-cial?

Yes i do feel that my music is commercial. That’s where the money is so i am all for being commercial. i include all kinds of genres in my music. rap, country music, jazz, and r&b.

What are your long term goals? Well, i want to be a movie star i’m good at making people be-lieve things and i’m very persuasive. i’ve even had several opportunities to audition. i enjoy acting and i definitely have the gift of gab. Actually, i’m currently competing in a contest to win a $100,000 budget for a TV show. The name of my show would be celebrity status. celebrity status is all about marketability; be-ing good looking, acting, and the gift of gab mixed with some good music. i feel like i have

the potential to win this competition. i defi-nitely feel as though i have celebrity status.

What does your image say about you? These days you need to have more than talent. You need to have an image. image is very important. i believe that when people see me they see someone who is marketa-ble meaning i can write, sing, dance, and my image has personality. This is who i am. i’m here for the longevity. i’m here for TV, radio, movies, and everything else. When people see me for the first time i don’t want them to see a gangsta or someone who wants to be in the streets all their life. i am a lov-ing father and i consider myself to be a role model and a trendsetter.

do you have a current single out right now?Yes i do. My latest single is called su-perficial. it’s about drug dealers and how being out in the streets is gonna get old.

Who have you been influenced by? i have been influenced by my father billy dowah, ll cool J, my uncle, Flavor Flav and Mariah carey.

Where can your fans learn more about you and hear your music?

What started as a writ-ing assign-ment from a high

school english teacher has turned into a passion and a career. Taye started out writ-ing poems at the age of 16 and to his surprise he was good at it. When Myspace came out and he began to post his poetry; he was sur-prised at the feedback. The response was phenomenal. That’s when he realized that

he was good with words. Taye admits that he became addicted and eventually started rhyming over music and he began to take his music seriously. he was born and raised in brooklyn, New York where he was raised by his grandmother. he moved to Virginia permanently at the age of 11. Taye candidly shared that he didn’t know his dad and the relation-ship he had with his mother didn’t exist until he became an adult. i asked Taye to de-

scribe what a person would hear if they listen to his cd. Taye describes his music as commercial and went on to explain that his music dis-cusses love, relationships, religion, and some of every-thing. i asked for a few exam-ples and he replied, ‘A lot of times people only turn to re-ligion when things are bad. it’s very seldom that people say i love you but if you hit the lottery they tell you they love you all the time. i am a firm believer that actions

speak louder than words, which is why everything in my music are real life experiences. some people listen to music as their fantasy or as something they want to connect with. i feel like storytelling makes the best songs and i hope that people will identify with my songs through my experiences.’ Taye has written a song called society which discusses his thoughts that televi-sion is being used as a blueprint to how people live their lives. he says, ‘television is like a catch 22 because you need it to survive. Television has become something that peo-ple need to help them determine who they are. shows such as love & hip hop and real housewives of Atlanta are showing people, espe-cially women, that there’s no room for flaws. Women feel like they have to be flawless. Their hair, make-up, and clothes have to be the best. re-ally, they could just be themselves but they don’t know that. They are literally scared to step out of the house just being who they are.’ Taye talks about his vision for the society video. ‘basically, it’s about a mother who is down because she’s not married and she’s a single mother and just like other women she wants the fairy tale. her daugh-

ter is emulating beyonce and other celebrities instead of her mother. it’s a chain reaction.’ Taye says his goal is for people to embody being themselves. he took me back to when he was growing up and still in school. Taye says that he was the one who was buying his clothes at burlington coat Factory and wearing off brand sneakers but he was also the one who was voted best dressed by his peers. ‘i want people to see that you could be that dude that’s different and with sneakers that don’t no-body else got. You could just be yourself. There are little boys walking around thinking that they’re nobody just because they can’t afford to own a $300 pair of Jordan’s.’ i asked Taye what he enjoys doing in his free time and he answered – ‘Music! Music! Music!’ Music is all that he’s interested. before music he was into women and before women it was basketball. he describes himself as having been a chubby kid and when he grew up and

Page 6: Ill XCON

started thinning out girls were all over him. Naturally, he became distracted and lost interest in basketball, which he was very good at. This is where Taye wishes he had a father. ‘A father would not let his son quit something that he was good at. Fathers don’t like things like that. A father would have been able to help me to see past the distractions’. This is why Taye is even more determined to make sure his career in the music industry is suc-cessful. he has found something else that he is talented at and he will not be distracted. Anyone who takes the time to talk to Taye will clearly see that he is as passionate as they come. he has something to say and he says it well. be sure to check Taye out at -

Mention relevant people in Fayette County Al aka Sticky City and one of the

first names that comes to mind is Knoc Aka Alabama Pimp. The 26 year-old rapper and co-CEO of GameBreakas ENT. heard the song “Pocket Full of Stones” by U.G.K. at the tender age of ten and he knew that being a MC was his destiny. In-fluenced by the legendary Pimp C and Bun B and Eightball and MJG, Knoc and his Brother Lil C...omi started hitting the studio in their early teenage years. By the time they were 18 they had recorded songs with the likes of 3-6 Mafia, Young Bleed, Al Kapone, Ty Cutta, K-Rino and many other success-ful artists. The Dynamic Duo also opened shows for 3-6 Mafia, The Last Mr. Bigg as well as many other acts. By 2006 Lil Comi and Knoc had moved thousands of units and were making noise in the under-ground circuit using a grassroots approach.

Their careers were looking very promising unit March 2006, when an incident at a Tuscaloosa night club sent Lil Comi to jail and derailed the enthusiasm for music that Knoc once had. Fortunately, Lil Comi would not allow his situ-ation to be the undoing of all the previous hard work. After a long conversation with Lil Comi, Knoc was convinced he had to jump back into the arena. Once the decision was made to return to music, Knoc got back in the lab and he dropped the Alabama Hero mix tape which garnered noticeable media and industry attention. Knoc was then contracted by the legendary DJ Smallz and released Street Fame in 2009. In 2010, Knoc won a South-ern Entertainment Award for “Best Host on a Mix tape”. With mix tapes and accolades, Knoc proves that he is an artist to watch for

Buck 50 has been rapping for the past two years. He started rapping with his uncle and his cousin called the Ill Vision gang. He was visiting from college. At

the time he was attending Saint Augustine’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina. He gave it a try and realized that he had the creativity for it but continued to work on his timing, lyrics and polishing. He got better with time. Buck 50 came up in the era of artists such as 50 cent and Lloyd Banks and considers them influential. Buck 50 says that he still pursu-ing events to perform at and he’s constantly looking for new opportunities. He recently released a mix tape called No Other Option. His mix tape can be found at datpiff.com and allusent.com. The mix tape has 15 tracks on it. Buck 50says that although he could have put a mix tape out sooner, he waited about 5 months because he wanted to make sure that he had the right material. He currently has two singles playing in rotation on the radio in North Carolina. The first one is called Drugs R’ Us and the second one is called Next To You. Buck 50 says that he’s received positive feedback from listeners on the radio. His goals for the future include creating a buzz in Virginia and getting his name recog-nized throughout the industry. When asked about his plans he stated that he doesn’t want to do too much at one time because it slows you down. Having an immediate plan makes it easier for him to get things done. Buck 50 is originally from Washington, North Caro-lina. While he was at Saint Augustine Col-lege in North Carolina, he studied criminal justice for a year. His long-term goals include getting a record deal and going worldwide. When asked how he describes his music he said he is still a young cat, so the music he makes is for young people. It’s what he de-scribes as lyrical club bangers. Not talking all over the place, but lyrical Club Bangers. Not all about being a wild on the track but it (the

lyrics and the topics) make sense. Buck 50 describes himself as versatile and said that he can get on the East Coast flow and he can step up to the music whatever kind of music it is. He currently resides in Newport News where he’s been living for the last 9 months. Buck 50 feels that success in this industry is sometimes about who you know but it’s also a matter of faith and patience. Buck 50 doesn’t feel that the industry is missing anything except him and what he has to offer. He feels as though he has to think outside of the box and a lot of artist are doing just that, so he has to give them their props. He wants to give a shout out to his team which includes One-9, Conspiracy, L. Real, Billy Doowah (who’s from the Funkadelics) and Ms. Ivy.

Antagonist Dragonspit aka Dragonspit Jones is an emcee/producer from Virginia Beach, VA. He also is known for throw-ing beat battles, open mics, and

hip hop showcases throughout the Tidewater area. His goal is to create opportunities for independent hip hop artists and beatmakers to showcase their talents and to perform their music. He hopes that this will eventually at-tract the attention of record labels and industry moguls. His dream is for VA to be a place that these companies come to for talent, being that there is so much talent in the area.

As far as his own music, Antagonist is a skilled music producer. He creates a sound reminis-cent of hip hop in the 90’s. His music alludes to a time when VA had a distinct sound that was heavily influenced by East Coast New York hip hop, as opposed to the dirty south. This style was characterized by bassline driven beats with heavy drums and soul samples (sometimes orchestra, jazz, and easy listening). Now this style is referred to as boombap, a sound estab-lished by hip hop greats such as Scott Larock, Marley Marl, DJ Premier, The Alchemist, Pete Rock, Dilla, Nottz, and Dr. Dre. Antagonist is one sixth of a production crew called The Bet-ter Beat Bureau (est. 2004).

As a lyricist, Antagonist tends to focus on showcasing lyrical skills, battle rapping, brag-godocio rhymes, storytelling, and spitting bars laced with socially conscious messages. He talks about everything from conspiracy

theories, the government, unsolved hood murders, to God. Recently, he recorded a track dedicated to Trayvon Martin, expressing his outrage at the Zimmer-man verdict. He doesn’t only want to rap to entertain, but he wants to use his music to educate and to help the youth in his community. He feels that he is here to counterbalance the self-destructive message that is embedded in much of the hip hop that they listen to. He presents his message in a positive fashion, but still manages to ‘go hard’ with the lyrics, if you will. You can check out his latest album, The Ugly Truth LP at http://dragonspitjones.bandcamp.com/album/the-ugly-truth-lp

ill Mag: how would you describe your music? The Xcon: he described it as a mix of struggle and street new school and old school com-bined.

iM: Who are your old school and new school influences?

X: Andre 3000, Nas, Master P, and snoop dogg are my new school influences. As for the old school, i would have to say big daddy Kane, cool G rap, and the Ghetto boys. i pre-fer old school over new school though.

iM: What projects are you currently working on?

X: We recently had a 757 live reppin’ Volume 2 release party at club Twist. We are currently in the process of producing Volume 3 which will be recorded soon.

iM: What do you feel is missing from the mu-sic industry? X: it’s not enough avenues avail-able to people who want to get in the indus-try and the industry needs variety. That’s why we focus on a grassroots effort to give local artist a chance to be seen and to help create more avenues for artists to express them-selves and be heard.

iM: What avenues are available through 757 live reppin’?

X: We sponsor showcases where artists can come out and perform. if an artist is interest-ed in performing all they need to do is con-tact us. All artists are screened before they are selected.

iM: What services do you provide to artists?

x: We support everyone and we’re looking to

help others get ahead. We produce rap videos for artists and put it on dVd then we sell the dVd’s and we use it for promotion. We offer a range of services including shooting YouTube segments (minimum of 16 bars), rap videos for $250 and we do photography. cd’s and dVd’s may be purchased at www.kmmedia.com

iM: how would you describe the work that you do? X: i would describe our work as a grass-roots effort and i hope people will get more of an opportunity to break out of the under-ground. We are trying to grow from region to region. We are currently doing some things in south carolina and Atlanta to expand our movement.

sM: Where can fans and supporters find you online?

X: 757 live reppin’ can be found online at YouTube as 757livereppin, on Facebook as XcoNXcoN, on Twitter as watchmebloom. cd’s and dVd’s may be purchased at www.kmmedia.com

sM: do you feel that your movement has been well received?

X: We feel as though we have been well-received for the market we have here but it’s more that could be done.

in conclusion, The Xcon passionately stated his goal to help the community and the region do more to further the progress of hip hop.

am sure that most of you remem-ber diddy’s Making the band. okay, so just in case you don’t remember, Making the band was an Abc/MTV reality television show that focused on selecting the best of the best for the band. it introduced us to musical acts o-Town, da band, danity Kane, day26, and donnie Klang. The group debuted at number 2 on billboard Top 200. unfortunately, due to differences in the band the group was disbanded. diddy chose to work with three of the five numbers and e.
