    2: Agamemnons regret overAkhilleus

    Evaluation

This scene serves to suggest that Agamemnonmay later on ask for Akhilleus help, havingrealized Akhilleus importance to their side(which he did in Book 9).

    formidable fighterDescription

    Akhilleus anger made

the Akhaian army losean eminent warrior.

    Interpretation

    Losing Akhilleus, who is

considered as the mostformidable fighter, givesus a hint that the armywill be enfeebled

4: Akhilleus ignoring his duty as a warrior

DescriptionAkhilleus, in anger, had a change of heart in Book 9. He was deciding tosail home and live a long life. He suddenly loses interest in fightingwhen in fact the war was made longer and more men were lostbecause of him.

In contrast, Paris was similar to Akhilleus in two wayshe also had alack of responsibility on his part as a warrior, and also he was one ofthe main reasons why the war started in the first place. But in Book 6he was persuaded to join the war at his brothers urging.

On the other hand, Hektor, aside from persuading his brother Paris

to join the battle, shows responsibility by taking leadership over theTrojans during the war. He made sacrifices to his own family becausehe knows his duty that he should be fighting in the war.

4: Akhilleus ignoring his duty as a warrior

InterpretationThese events, having displayed characters notgoing to the aid of their country right when they

were needed, both show the duty of every soldierto fight for his country. Both Akhilleus and Parisexhibited some degree ofirresponsibility in notfulfilling his duty right away, and both had to be

persuaded to return. However, Paris did whileAkhilleus did not, at least, within the time span ofBook 9.

4: Akhilleus ignoring his duty as a warrior

    Evaluation

The contrasts pertaining to Hektor and Paris inBook 6 build up the persuasions of theemissaries to Akhilleus in Book 9 that whileAkhilleus was angry at Agamemnon, there is awar going on, so Akhilleus must fight. In this

way, the contrasts found in Book 6 areprobable and necessary to Book 9.
