Change“Change will not come
if we wait for some
other person, or if we
wait for some other
time. We are the ones
we've been waiting for.
We are the change that
we seek.”

remember being a student in my graduate program. My professors constantly challenged me to think outside of the box. Coming from an undergraduate experience where faculty didn’t actually invest time, I had to adopt this new way of thinking and being.
My professor gave us an assignment that required us to design a new and innovative program for college students. At first, I thought, “what could be easy?” But then, I decided to actually try.
I created a survey and spoke with my friends about their experiences. It was then that I saw a need to design a formalized leadership curriculum for students.
I spent late nights doing research, coming up with ideas, and getting more and more excited as the idea flourished. My professor loved the idea that I was able to
co-implement a Fraternity/Sorority Leadership 3-credit course on campus with the Director of Greek Life.
In reflecting back on this experience, had I not challenged myself to speak to others, get insight, and try new things, chances are I would not have been given that opportunity.
As leaders, we need to constantly ask important questions to ensure that we are keeping up with the times, needs and interests of our peers. It is easy to do things because, “we’ve done it this way for 5 years” but if you want to make change in our community and on campus, then you need to STRETCH your limits and comfort zone.
This year, I’ve adopted this philosophy and revamped the Lisa A. Pierce Center for Leadership. After brainstorming with my leadership coordinators, we
expanded the office from having 1 student assistant to 7 student trainers.
Was this initiative easy? Not at all, but with a little bit of elbow grease and conversations with students, here we are.
This semester you can expect to see our office more often. We will be reaching out to you, and hopefully helping many of you enhance your leadership potential. We know leadership is important, and we are here to help you grow to unleash what’s inside. As my professor would say, we want to help you “think outside of the box.”
“When we all think alike, then no one is thinking.”— Walter Lippman

Emerging Leaders ProgramAbout the Program The Emerging Leaders Program starts in the Fall semester of every academic year, and offers freshman and sophomore students an opportunity to explore & practice their personal leadership skills. The framework used for this 8-week interactive program is The Social Change Model of Leadership. This model focuses on the process of enacting social change in our society and communities. The students explore the 7Cs in bi-weekly sessions. At the completion of the program, students will design and implement a leadership project which speaks to the core values of the Social Change Model. Each student will present the final project and be recognized for his/her work at the graduation ceremony, held on Wednesday, March 13, 2013. All are welcomed to attend.

The Five Dimensions of Leadership Competency
Leadership competencies consist of valuable skills, abilities, behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge areas (Wagner, 2006). Mastery of these competencies is an ongoing process that are organized into five dimensional categories that are shown below:
1: SELF MANAGEMENTWagner (2006) states that, good leaders know their own values, strengths, and limitations and are able to control their emotions and behaviors. They must strive for personal development by engaging in continuous learning and being willing to seek help when needed or admit when they have made a mistake. They should be able to adapt to stressful or dynamic situations and be able to maintain a balance between their work and non-work lives
2: LEADING OTHERSLeaders must maximize the potential of others and motivate them to attain shared goals. They must be able to manage individual and group performance with an understanding of group dynamics and team building. Leaders must actively listen and communicate effectively to persuade others and build consensus and trust. They should understand and be empathic toward individual’s emotions and needs and be able to resolve conflicts in a respectful manner. (Wagner, 2006)
3: TASK MANAGEMENTLeaders use task-specific knowledge and experience to guide the group to attaining its goals. Leaders must engage in problem solving, delegation, time and resource management, and eliminating barriers to performance. Leaders also must strive for results and provide feedback to ensure effective contributions from all constituents. (Wager, 2006)
4: INNOVATIONLeaders must be able to think creatively while taking initiative and calculated risks. Effective leaders have a vision beyond the immediate work of the group. This involves exploring and integrating diverse perspectives and recognizing unexpected opportunities. (Wagner, 2006)
5: SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYLeaders must act with integrity, honesty, and justice. They must work in the best interest of others, showing respect and empathy for unique individual and cultural differences. Good leaders create a culture that promotes high ethical standards along with personal, organizational, and civic responsibility. Ethical leaders recognize and conduct themselves in concert with universal moral principles as well as specific values, laws, and ethics relevant to their group or organization. (Wagner, 2006)
