01ROOFTOP GARDENSAs we develop our cities, the mushrooming concrete jungle has conquered our urban spaces. Cleverly utilising rooftops for greenery can provide more green breathing spaces for urbanites. Not only urban dwellings, but hospitals and commercial spaces are now converting their once spartan roof spaces into lush oases, which include community urban farming and recreational spaces.

We have wrapped up another year of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards, MLAA, for the year 2015, and so now we bring you a preview of what to expect for the latest landscape design trends inspiring our industry.

This year, a total of 130 submissions have been received, across 8 categories, and we can already observe design trends ranging from recreating natural environments, to preserving heritage and nostalgic moments, to adopting a park. Here is our top 10 listing:

TOP 10

02LINEAR FUNCTIONAL SPACELong linear spaces are becoming a new trend in landscape design. These provide uninterrupted views between straight lines of trees. Linear spaces are often associated with the building footprint in which emphasis is placed on optimising space usage and the functional aspect, especially in limited urban spaces.

03ART IS LANDSCAPE, LANDSCAPE IS ARTSculptures and hard landscape artistic elements such as motifs, focal points, and water features, have become an established part of most modern landscape designs. Organic shapes give a soft touch and provide inspiration to those who appreciate fine art and human endeavours to create beauty.

04SPACES WITHIN SPACESA secluded space, created within larger landscape spaces, provides an enclave to fit various purposes. Often, it is either a small corner or open area, screened by plants, which often creates an unparalleled ambiance for quiet reflection or relaxation.

Page 6: ILAM LANDSKAP No 22

06GIVING TRADITIONAL OBJECTS A NEW BREATH OF LIFEA rapidly growing trend is when antique design elements are used as part of new landscaping plans; traditional water features, tiles with traditional motifs and recycling of old products or resources from construction sites are being snapped up in the race to make connections between the old world and the new.

07RECREATING WATERWAYSWaterways provide exceptional recreational opportunities, and a rich habitat for wildlife, within urban spaces. Too often, land which is not suitable for development, can be utilised as waterways and act as natural retention ponds. This indirectly improves overall environment quality, and elevates property values.

05NOSTALGIC ELEMENTSElements or objects which seem familiar evoke feelings of nostalgia when highlighted within new landscape designs. Motifs in tiles, structures that appear similar to older heritage buildings, or retro-styled children’s swing and play equipment, are among the items which are now being used as landscape elements, especially in ultra modern garden spaces.

08NATURAL CLEANSINGRecently, more and more engineered drainage systems have been redesigned as natural swale. These areas are created to retain storm water, treated biologically by wetland plants, which can then be used for recreational and esthetic purposes. Water can be maintained locally, rather than discharged into a nearby river or water system, and thus utilised for recreational purposes and as a new wildlife habitat for native and visiting species of birds and animals.

09GO VERTICALWith limited green spaces in urban areas, vertical greenery has becomeimportant for high-rise development and community enclaves. Besidesserving as a green backdrop, vertical growth also provides a comfortablemicroclimate for the inhabitants.

10ADOPT A PARKLarge corporations and property developers are now adopting open spaces within city areas. The plan is to upgrade the green spaces and make them function for the public. This CSR programme is a collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Singapore10 SPECIAL REPORT

VERTICAL GREENERY

Being a city with a growing population and highrise buildings, Singapore successfully integrated green spaces into every corner of the development, either horizontally or vertically. As a pioneer in vertical greenery and green wall technology, the study was aimed at viewing similarly successful projects.

The visit was conducted by Greenology Nursery, with an introduction to vertical greenery and urban farming projects. The group visited the various mechanisms of green wall systems and also green moss walls. A controlled and self-sustaining urban farming system was also featured in the visit. The excursion concluded with the visit to Changi General Hospital and Mediacorp Building at Mediapolis to study green vertical landscape projects.

21-22 JANUARY 2016 ILAM TECHNICAL STUDY TOUR

greens2.0

Following the success of the first edition of Singapore Greens in May 2015, another technical visit to Singapore was organised by ILAM Southern Chapter committee in January 2016. WATER SENSITIVE URBAN DESIGN (WSUD)

A visit in the afternoon brought participants to Pioneer & Crescent Hall, Nanyang Technology University, to study wetland and waterway designs as part of a scheme to conserve water locally and use it for recreational purposes and promote biodiversity within the university’s vicinity.

The second day visit focused on Rochor Canal in downtown Singapore. A 1km-long stretch of Rochor Canal, between Jalan Besar and Crawford Street, has been transformed into a vibrant waterway that integrates seamlessly with existing residential and commercial developments. A key highlight of the makeover is the urban promenade which runs along the river and reconstructed bridges, enhancing connectivity to the surrounding enclaves and nearby MRT station. Rain gardens that treat rainwater runoff also offer learning opportunities for nearby residents and students.Wetlands at Nanyang Technology University
