Terminology

λ: Thermal conductivity coefficient [W/mK] of a material

the thermal conductivity coefficient is defined as being the quantity of heat passing through the material in stationary condition, per unit of surface (1 m²), per unit of time (1 s) and per unit of temperature difference of this material.

ex.: Enertherm ALU = λ 0,023 W/m.K

λD: declared value after ageing W/m.K


Terminology

R: Thermal resistance R [m² K/W] of a wall consisting of one isotropic material, is calculated by means of the following formula (surface to surface resistance)

R: = d/λ (m²K/W)

Vb: compare MW versus PIR thickness 5 cm

MW: 0,05 / 0,040 = R 1,25 m²K/WPIR: 0,05 / 0,023 = R 2,18 m²K/W

Rc: = R-value of a complete construction, which means the sum of the R-values of the different parts of the construction, without taking the environment into account.
