WHAT IS WORSHIP?

• Reverent devotion and allegiance pledged to God; the rituals or ceremonies by which this reverence is expressed. The English word worship comes from the Old English word worthship, a word which denotes the worthiness of the one receiving the special honor or devotion.

WHAT MAKES WORSHIP ACCEPTABLE?

The first worship recorded in the Bible was that of Cain and Abel (Gen. 4:1-)

Abel offered acceptable worship by faith (Heb.11:4) But that of Cain was rejected because it was done not according to the commandments of God!

Many worshippers today choose their method of worship

WHAT MAKES WORSHIP ACCEPTABLE?

True worship occurred under the inspiration of God’s spirit (Amos 3:7)

The Right Object of Worship - God

• When Jesus was tempted by the devil to fall down and worship Satan, with the promise that all kingdoms of the world be His, Jesus replied: “Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thy serve” (Matt. 4:10) No one on earth is worthy of our reverence and devotion as is God.

The Right Motive for Worship – In Spirit.

• Jesus named the right motive for worship, “In spirit” God never intended that people go through formalities of empty ritualism. Even under the Law of Moses, when Israel worshiped according to God’s revealed will, the mere empty observance of rites and ceremonies was not God’s purpose for their worship!

Matt. 6: 6-7•True worshipers ‘must’ worship from the heart.

•1Cor. 5:8

The Right Acts of Worship – In Truth -

• If our worship is to be “in truth” – and it is (John 4:24) – then it must be according to God’s word, for Jesus prayed to the Father, “Thy word is truth” (John 17:17). And, as noted in the very definition of the word, worship is “acts of reverence and adoration .” Worship is not something we simply feel, but something we do.

John 4: 23-24 “But the hour cometh, and now is,

when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

God is a spirit: and they that worship him must worship him is spirit and in truth”

Philip. 3:3

disciples come together for worship, they learn from the scripture.

SINGING (Eph. 5:18-19; Col.3:16 Heb.13:15) They were commanded to sing with the fruit of their lips and make melody in their heart to the Lord. 16
