Be traditional. Or untraditional. Or be both. With thenew IKEA winter collection KALLT, anything is possible, wherever in the world you celebrate your holidays. After all, it’s coming together and having a good time that’s most important. “The KALLT collection is one complete series with two different expressions”, says Madeleine Löwenborg-Frick, Public Relations Manager, IKEA Canada. “Even though they differ in colours and theme – from crisp and clear to warm and cosy – they’re easy to combine and coordinate in numerous ways, according to your own personal taste.” The Winter collection also includes a wide variety of outdoor and indoor lighting, gift wrapping articles and candles. Combined with TRIVSAM and LJUVLIG tableware series, we’ve made sure there are as many decorating options as there are winter celebrants.

designer Eva Lundgreen“I love the patterns and colours in old Scandinavian wool felt and textiles. It was also these that gave me the inspiration for the KALLT collection. My idea was to make a connection with the simplicity, warmth and diligence of the old Swedish country culture. The stripes and floral patterns are simplified folk patterns and the dancing figures fit in well with the playfulness of Christmas. I want the collection to feel warm and personal, and mix historical retrospection with a modern style.”

designer Ola Wihlborg“With KALLT outdoor lighting, I wanted to create something new. The collection includes hanging lights/drape, a light chain you can put on the ground and two chandeliers. All can be used outdoors and have one common denominator - the snowball. It felt natural to use LED lights, because they give off a crisp light that reminds you of winter and snow. Use the pieces together or alone. I hope the snowballs inspire you to decorate outdoors and brighten up the winter darkness.”

designers s Edholm and L Ullenius“Our inspiration for the KALLT collection came from Swedish 18th century Gustavian-style patterns on wallpaper, china and textiles, among other things. By enlarging, cropping and adjusting the patterns we gave them a new, modern look - while still keeping the connection to cultural history. The colours are cool and elegant, and easy to match with contemporary design. We think the patterns inspire joy and happiness, and we would gladly have them in our own homes.”

designer sissa sundling “I decided to give the LJUVLIG series clean, simple shapes so the glass would catch the light in the room and spread colours that brighten up the table. When it comes to table settings, I think the visual impression is just as important as the functional: beautiful everyday things improve the quality of life. My idea was also that the set should be able to be used in many different ways and in many different situations. Can a soft toy improve a child’s future?Since 2003, IKEA has donated €1 ($1.58 CAD) to UN ICE F and Save the Children for every teddy bear and soft toy sold. This annual campaign, which lasts from mid-November to late December, has so far raised nearly €11 million ($17,383,593 CAD). Every cent is earmarked for these two organizations, whose overall goal is to improve children’s lives around the world.

This year’s campaign – aiming to improve children’s education – will enable UNICEF and Save the Children to start up new projects in 14 countries, as well as financing their ongoing projects.

On the following pages, we’re highlighting two ongoing projects in China and Albania, established to create a safe and inspiring learning environment for children.

1 euro is a fortuneTogether with our customers IKEA can make a real difference. 1 euro ($1.58 CAD) alone is enough to provide 5 children with schoolbooks for one whole year. Just imagine how much IKEA and our customers all over the world can accomplish: schools, teachers, books...

ThE ChILdREN ACTIvITy CENTRE IN fEIdONg COUNTy, ChINAThe majority of the students at the Yangzhen Primary School in the Chinese province of Anhui are left behind by their parents who have migrated to find work in urban areas. This is why Save the Children started a Children’s Activity Centre here in September 2006. The Centre provides a safe space for children to play and spend time together, helping them to cope with being far away from their parents, and to build self-confidence. The Children’s Activity Centre is managed by children selected by the children themselves, with some necessary support from teachers. All children are welcome to read, play and make friends in the Centre. Several migration groups are set up for the left-behind children to help one another, with a supporting adult volunteer in each group. Training and workshops are provided for both children and teachers to raise awareness of children’s rights – especially about non-discrimination and child protection. The centre was established in cooperation with Anhui Provincial Youth League, Changfeng County Youth League and Yangzheng Primary School.

The story of Hu Jun Jie Hu Jun Jie, 13, is a triplet who lives with one of his brothers at his paternal grandfather’s, while the other brother lives with his maternal grandmother. His township has a large rate of labour migration into the urban areas of Hefei City, some 30-40 kilometres away. Most people here work in agriculture, and many villagers seek extra income in the cities before and after the growing and harvest seasons. Hu Jun Jie is in fifth grade at Yangzheng Primary School. The school has a basketball ground, but its buildings and surroundings look old, rugged and dirty. More than 50 students can be supervised by one head teacher in each class. The Children’s Activity Centre at the school not only provides Hu Jun Jie with the opportunity to play, but has also taught him about children’s rights and child protection. This is something he is passing on to his family. This is Hu Jun Jie’s own story, abridged:

“My  parents  have  worked  outside  of this town since I was five or six years old. My mom is a saleswoman. My dad is a carpenter. They come home once a month or every two months. Otherwise, we visit

them during long holidays and stay with them. The house where my second brother lives is about half an hour away by bus. He has lived with my mom’s mother since he was little because it’s impossible for my grandfather to take care of all of us. We see my second brother once a week, so I don’t miss him that often. When I get home in the evening, I normally do my homework and watch a bit of TV. Then I’ ll go and play with friends in the village. I spend about half an hour doing my homework. Usually it’s my grandfather who helps me. He is a peasant. Sometimes my homework is all correct, sometimes not. I like mathematics, but my English teacher is my favourite because he is funny and always tells jokes. I also like to play ping-pong and basketball. Every two weeks, I do activities at this (C’’shildren Activity) centre. I read and play ping-pong there. I would like to tell my parents that if I have done something wrong, I think we should sit down and talk through it rather than use violence. I had training with Save the Children on children’s basic rights. And children should have the right not to experience family violence. We have talked a little about it. My parents listened to me and their behaviour has changed a bit.”

All children are welcome to read and play and at the Centre.

At the Children’s Activity Centre, 13-year old Hu Jun Jie can play and read with other children who have also been left behind by parents that have migrated to urban areas.

Education quality in Albania plummeted during the transition to market economy, and a generation of children now risks growing up without books. Surveys indicate that more than half of Albanian 15-year-olds read only at the simplest level, and gender discrimination tends to encourage adolescent girls to drop out of school. ‘Albania Reads’ is a government initiative launched in 2006 to restore a culture of reading among the country’s youth. UNICEF supports this project with help from IKEA, which has donated €1 million ($1.58 million CAD) for new books through the Soft Toy Campaign. A total of 850 schools are targeted for the programe. Already more than 190 schools have created libraries. “First you learn to read and then you read to learn,” says Carrie Auer, UNICEF Representative in Albania – vital steps to ensuring a learning culture for children and their community.

Ermedina’s teacher reads to her class. ‘Albania Reads’ also promotes teacher training and qual-ity literature standards.

Three boys read, sharing a desk in the compulsory school in the village of Tomin in Peshkopia, one of the country’s poorest regions. The children are waiting for their new books.

Livia Klosi, 13, and other girls read books in the library at Edith Durham Compulsory School in Tirana, the capital. “I like reading because I learn a lot from books,” Livia says. “I learn from the past and for the future. And what I like the most is that [books] enhance my imagination.” Livia’s school is one of the best in the country although its library, as in other schools, is inadequate.

Ermedina Hoxha, 13, is one of Tomin’s best students and an avid reader. She has read all the books in the school’s outdated library and wants to go to university and become a teacher.

A boy reads with other students during a class, in Halit Coka Compulsory and High School in a suburb of the capital Tirana. With support from IKEA, UNICEF has donated new books to the school through the ‘Albania Reads’ initiative.

Ahmet Gashi lacks a heating system but it has some books now. Dea Gjoka (standing) is on her way to becoming a lifelong reader. “Books give freedom to my mind [and] harmony to my soul,” she says.
