Our Vision for the next Decade

To achieve truly world class status as envisaged by our honourable Prime Minister during his Independence Day Speech

Education will be more broad-based and Interdisciplinary

To reach a critical mass of about 20000 students and 2000 faculty by 2020.

About 40% will be undergraduate, 30% post-graduate and 30% doctoral students

The undergraduates will be targeted to be leaders in the industry and government(60%), education and research (20%) and business/ entrepreneurship (20%)

60 year old infrastructure originally designed for 3000 students Hostel capacity inadequate – need augmentation by about 5000

in two years Faculty residences require major renovation and expansion Road, Drainage, Power, Water supply require augmentation Away from the Metros – medical facilities and campus

amenities inadequate Students’ amenities require modernization and expansion Shortage of faculty is one of the key challenges


IIT Kharagpur: Actions Underway Master Plan for student growth to 11000 (in 2011) and 20000 (in

2020) developed New Classrooms, Laboratory Complex, Library, Convention

Center being built New Hostels (2X2000 for boys and 1X600 for girls) under

construction New Faculty residences and Staff housing under construction New Water Supply System to provide 3 mgd of water 24X7 Pharmacy and Multi-speciality Hospital being planned Food Court, Cafeteria, Launderette are being planned Students’ Activities Center and augmentation of Open Air Theater
