A 5000-year old civilization steeped in history; rich in discoveries, invention, science.

A nation of people whose daily lives are inspired by epic sagas of morality, valour and character.

An intellectual melting pot of the fittest minds across a multitude of castes, creeds, states, dialects, religions and

ideologies.

Small wonder then that some of the most paradigm-breaking theories, impacting of ideas and enduring of sciences come

from this land.

Or that one of the world's oldest civilizations is also the fastest growing economy of our times.

With every successive invasion, India has grown stronger and more resilient, enriched by the silt of confluence. With the

Dutch, French and Portuguese, came a world view. With the Persians came the tempering philosophy of Zarathushtra.

With the Moghuls came splendid architecture, delectable cuisine and glory. With the British came the unifying tongue of

English and with the visits of intrepid travelers like Marco Polo on his spice trail, came the chronicling of a country's

almanac of success.

What began in the Indus Valley is today a burgeoning knowledge economy, filled with opportunity and promise. All it

takes is for you to know that you are and always will be, a student for life. And the teacher will appear.

Page 4: IIM Ahmedabad

India has a rich heritage of learning and education right from antiquity. Ancient India, a

land of sages, seers, scholars and scientists was the birthplace of knowledge; including

mathematics, astronomy, science, medicine and several other disciplines. In fact, it was

the only country in early times, where knowledge was systematized and provision made

for its imparting at the highest level. The world's first university was established at

thTakshila in 700 BC. Built in 4 century BC, the University of Nalanda, which once

housed over nine million books, attracted students from all over the world; including

Tibet, China, Central Asia and Korea.

Ayurveda, the earliest school of medicine known to man, owes its origins to ancient

India. The Vedas, orally composed in Vedic Sanskrit, are the oldest surviving texts of the

Vedic civilization. The word 'Veda' means 'knowledge' and is derived from the root 'Vid'

which stands for 'know.' Sanskrit, the thousand-year old Indian language is the most

suitable for computer software, a fact that the Forbes magazine has reiterated.

IIMAA learner’s paradise

Conceived not only as a business school but also as

an institute of management, the Indian Institute of

Management, Ahmedabad builds on over forty

years of excellence and leadership in management

education.

IIMA strives to maximize learning effectiveness by

constantly updating the course content, revising

course design and experimenting with innovative

pedagogy for more interactive learning.

The institute is the pioneer of the case study

approach to management education in India, the

result of its early collaboration with Harvard. A

student-centred methodology entails working in

groups and encourages intense participation, as

students learn to present their perspectives, defend

their stand and think through management

problems.

Since its inception, IIMA has produced several

leader managers who, with their dreams, aspirations

and vision, have shaped the global economy, and

driven the growth of the organizations they served.

Rated as India's best b-school, IIMA continues to be

ranked as one of the finest institutions in the world;

having an academic rigour that matches the top

league.

With more than 80 full-time, dedicated professors -

all teachers, mentors, researchers and consultants of

extraordinary calibre, an exceptional student-

faculty ratio and a 100-acre world-class campus

conducive to continuous learning, IIMA is truly a

learner's paradise.

The art of navigation was born on the river Sindh, over 5,000 years ago. The very word

'navigation' itself is derived from the Sanskrit word, 'navgatih'. USA-based IEEE has

proved what has been a century-old suspicion amongst academics - that the pioneer of

wireless communication was a Professor Jagdeesh Bose and not Marconi. According to

the Gemological Institute of America, until 1896, India was the only source of diamonds

to the world. Distillation of perfumes, making of dyes, extraction of sugar, weaving of

cotton cloth, smelting of metals, ship building, the concept of alchemy, the principle of

magnetism used in a Mariner's Compass and the first dam and reservoir were are all part

of India's pursuit of knowledge, centuries ago.

PGPX The knowledge leverage

Executives and managers of today, across industries,

organizations and sectors need to embrace change, move

with the times and broaden their perspective. Among the

several challenges they face, the most critical is

awakening to the fact that learning is an ongoing process.

The One Year Post-Graduate Programme in

Management for Executives (PGPX) has been

conceived to sharpen the skills of bright and aspiring men

and women and to help them evolve as management

leaders and change agents in the global arena.

PGPX is a get-ready-for-top-management programme in

which only the sharpest minds make it to the consideration

set. With general management orientation and emphasis

on international exposure and global business skills, the

residential programme is ideal for mid-level managers;

making students learners for life. As individuals who see

the world as a marketplace, every challenge as an

opportunity and every road-block as a chance to be change

agents. From this self-inspired thinking comes the natural

fallout - a supremely positive attitude and an increased

ability to take life by the horns.

With its refreshingly new learning pattern, PGPX aims to

be the knowledge fountainhead of tomorrow's

management leadership. A classic demonstration of

IIMA's commitment to excellence.

Page 8: IIM Ahmedabad

India invented the number system. Aryabhatta gave to the world the concept of zero and

its far-reaching impact. The place value system and decimal systems were developed in

India, as early as 100 BC. The value of 'pi' was first calculated by Budhayana, who

explained what is now known as the Pythagorean Theorem. In 1999, British scholars

officially endorsed that Budhayana's works date to the 6th century, which is much earlier

than that of most European mathematicians. Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus came

from India and quadratic equations were created by Sridharacharya in the 11th century.

Page 9: IIM Ahmedabad

Specifically designed for graduates who have put in

valuable work experience after their degree, PGPX is

tailored to take cognizance of every student's real-life

knowledge of the work place. This programme follows a

six-step course structure, illustrative of how serious IIMA

is about encouraging top-rung thinking.

Induction

Spread over three and a half days, it gives the participants

a chance to get familiar with the infrastructure, co-

curricular and extra-curricular activities, while tuning

into the programme content and the IIMA method of

learning.

Building Blocks

The core segment of 17 courses, spread over 240

sessions, gives the participants a rigorous grounding in

the fundamentals of management. It crystallizes and

enhances their basic conceptual and analytical

knowledge, pre-disposing them for managerial

effectiveness.

Preparing for Top Management

This segment of 15 courses spread over 180 sessions

further develops participants' skills, enabling them to

better understand and envision the dynamics within

complex management problems. It also prepares them for

visionary leadership, being change agents and playing a

role at the top.

International Immersion

This globally networked segment of 90 sessions provides

a more universal exposure to participants, offering a view

to leadership excellence beyond physical boundaries. It

enables executives to work effectively in an environment

different from their home culture.

Electives

The segment, spread over 120 sessions, allows

participants the freedom of electives in areas of passion

and proficiency, making every student's experience

unique and customized to his or her chosen growth path.

It is also an opportunity to explore new areas of learning

and a chance to reflect on and leverage past experience.

Capstone

A finale as an encapsulation of the learning experience,

the 30-session segment provides an opportunity to

integrate learning from the entire programme, reflect on

one's own experience as executives and understand what

it means to work in large multidisciplinary teams against

tough deadlines.

PGPXProgrammed for future

Ancient India's contributions to astronomy are well known and well documented. The

earliest references are found in the Rig Vedas, which date back to 2000 BC. During the

next 2500 years, by 500 AD, ancient Indian astronomy emerged as an important part of

Indian studies and in the casting of horoscopes. The theory of gravitation, calculation of

occurrences of eclipses, determination of the earth's circumference and number of

planets in the solar system, as well as proof that the sun is a star are just some of India's

firsts in the field.

Page 11: IIM Ahmedabad

Recognizing the imperatives of globalization, PGPX has

a well-designed, constantly-reviewed curriculum that

equips leader managers with the skills and competencies

to succeed in the global marketplace. Skewed towards

decision-making and honing of skills for success in the

global arena, the PGPX experience includes participants

with international exposure, globally focused case

studies, international faculty and the international

immersion segment.

International Immersion is a learning segment which is

globally-networked, geographically-boundless and

universally-grounded. Participants spend five intensive

weeks in international location. The segment has two

components, a course and a project. The course equips

students to understand macro-level dynamics and

unfamiliar environments.

The international projects will be handled by groups,

each with three to five participants. The groups will be

balanced to reflect diverse skill sets and experiences to

maximize effectiveness. The project will be a 'consulting'

type assignment, executed by participants with a faculty

as guide.

PGPX The international edge

Page 12: IIM Ahmedabad

Gravitation was known to the Hindus before the birth of Newton. The system of blood

circulation was discovered by them centuries before Harvey. The Vedas contain not only

religious ideas for a perfect life, but also facts which science has proven true. The

science and technology of electricity, sound, radium, electronics, airships were all

known to seers of ancient India. The concept of the atom was established among Indian

philosophers as early as 3000 BC. These scholars had classified all matter under five

basic elements - prithvi (earth), agni (fire), vayu (air), jal (water) and akash (space).

Page 13: IIM Ahmedabad

IIMA is privileged to host faculty who have distinguished

themselves as teachers, entrepreneurs, policy makers,

researchers, theoreticians and consultants of

extraordinary calibre.

Their multidisciplinary exposure, passion for research

and extensive linkages with the industry, combine into

high standards of teaching and mentoring; which

translates into relevant and updated course content and

virtually brings the practicing industry into the classroom.

IIMA believes that research is the resilient key to break

new frontiers of knowledge. Underlying this focus is the

philosophy of creativity which enables creation of new

knowledge, crystallization of relevant theoretical

frameworks and application of the research to

organizations, sectors and industries both, nationally and

globally. Little wonder then that more than one-third of the

total management research in India comes out of IIMA.

Such interdisciplinary research by the faculty feeds

directly into the prevalent learning environment. The

institute has the largest repertoire of case studies in the

country, many of them internationally focused. In the last

four decades, IIMA has generated research output of about

825 books and monographs, over 3,000 scholarly articles,

more than 4,000 cases and in excess of 2,000 working

papers.

With such an exhaustive knowledge bank of ideas,

information and insight, ready and waiting to be tapped

into, one can only imagine the advantage accrued by

students.

FACULTY & RESEARCH Enablers par excellence

In the area of recreation and sports, ancient India was known for its innovation. Games

like, chess, snakes & ladders, cards, polo and the martial arts of Judo and Karate

originated in India. What is known as and has evolved into chess today, was actually a

game called Chaturanga - meaning four bodied - that was created in ancient India. This

was the ancestor of Shatranj, which was the form that brought chess to medieval

Europe. Kalaripayattu, a series of intricate movements that train the body and mind, is

one of the oldest forms of martial arts that originated in Kerala - a state in southern India.

Surprisingly, even the popular game of cards originated in ancient India and was known

as Krida-patram. These and the other sports of recent times like polo, aimed to keep

mind and body honed to a high level of fitness.

Page 15: IIM Ahmedabad

CAMPUS & INFRASTRUCTURE

Page 16: IIM Ahmedabad

India never invaded any country in her last 1000 years of history. According to Hu Shih,

former Ambassador of China to USA, “India conquered and dominated China culturally

for 20 centuries without ever having to send a single soldier across her border.” It is

from India that concepts of yoga, meditation, renunciation, ahimsa and religious

tolerance have originated. Martin Luther King Junior has described the land of Buddha

in a few apt words… “India is a tremendous force for peace and non violence, at home

and abroad. It is a land where the idealist and the intellectual are yet respected. The spirit

of Gandhi is very much alive in India. The land of yoga, meditation and nirvana, India

has been the nurturing ground for several cultures, religions and philosophies.”

Page 17: IIM Ahmedabad

PGPX is a programme that makes sure that the one year on

campus not only boosts development but also enhances

career graphs.

It is not a course on par with anything but itself. It has been

created to be a yardstick and not a mere comparison. Its

unique design and uncompromising stance of residential

attendance is proof that nothing will come in the way of

fostering excellence and setting a new high for the world

to follow. Only leaders pass out from the campus.

IIMA has always enjoyed special preference of recruiters

on account of its sustained and excellent performance. It

remains the 'Institute of Choice' for many international

and Indian companies, who keep coming back year after

year, scouting for exceptional management talent.

Some of the blue chip names include: Accenture, Bain &

Company, Boston Consulting Group, Citibank NA,

Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs International, Hindustan

Lever Limited, HSBC International, Infosys, Lehman

Brothers, McKinsey & Company Inc, Merrill Lynch,

Morgan Stanley, Olam International Limited, Procter &

Gamble, Swatch, Tata Group etc.

Placements may sound like a grand finale; however for the

leader managers emerging out of IIMA PGPX, it's a whole

new beginning.

PLACEMENTS A new beginning

Page 18: IIM Ahmedabad

Over decades and centuries, India has evolved, but what has not changed is its pursuit of

knowledge and its passion to share it. The principles of harmony and co-existence have

manifested into its unique “unity in diversity” culture; along with its throbbing

democracy, free press, active judiciary and comprehensive education system.

Today, India, the fourth largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity, is also the

fastest-growing economy in the world. Equipped with the second largest talent pool of

technically qualified, English speaking manpower, India has a distinct cutting edge in

IT, Biotechnology, Business Process Outsourcing, Gems & Jewelry, Knowledge

Process Outsourcing, Medical Tourism etc. Modern India continues to thrive on its rich

heritage of learning and is surging forward as the next global powerhouse.

Indian companies are repeatedly proving themselves to be world-class by moving up the

value chain in IT-enabled services. Excellence in the service and manufacturing sectors

gives a further advantage and places the country firmly in every global organization's

business plan. From automobiles to atomic energy, steel to space technology, banking to

business processes, textile to telecom and insurance to infrastructure, the writing is on

the wall. Things have come full circle. The tiger has been uncaged.

What the PGPX 2006-07 batch has to say:

“The PGPX is extremely rigorous with a strong academic focus. Reflecting back on the past few months, it

is amazing to look at the pace at which we are learning new concepts. Perhaps, the best thing about the

program is the IIMA pedagogy that stretches the student to the limits, making him realize his own

potential.”

- Achal

"The programme is phenomenonal and the learning tremendous. It is true to IIMA's reputation. The

rigour, pedagogy and content of PGPX is a true reflection of the commitment of the institute in bringing

best of the management education to India and to the world."

- Veeran

“I wonder if the reason IIMA students do well is because after this experience, the real world seems easier.

I'm constantly discovering that I am capable of doing and learning much more. The curriculum is

extremely well-designed and at par with the most prestigious one-year MBA programmes being offered

globally.”

- Arminder

“Foregoing US and European B-schools was not easy when I decided to be at IIMA. However, within a

month, I was convinced that I had made the right decision. Personally, every experience here has been

overwhelming and IIMA's stellar faculty blended with case methodology has definitely enabled me to

think in new ways."

- Sachin

“I am very impressed by the efforts put in by all parties to make this program a success. When the

Chairperson himself pops in during your group discussion at one in the morning, he is sending a message

that "I am with you as you go through this journey." It is very comforting and it is these personal details, as

much as the impressive infrastructure, that will make PGPX a success.”

- Noor

“India is booming; we planned to move back and what better place than IIM, Ahmedabad to come back

to!”

- Swati

“Facilities at IMDC (housekeeping, mess and reception) are the best. Having been in hostels before, this

was a real pleasant surprise. I couldn't ask for more. My experience - amazing. Surprise quizzes -

speechless!”

- Kiran

Ahmedabad, the seventh largest city of India, is not just a mega city. It is a melting pot of cultures, values and enterprise;

a place where tradition blends with technology. The vibrant city, with a population of around 5.5 million people, has a

proud history of industry and commerce that makes it a fitting home for an institute of the calibre of IIMA.

Once called the 'Manchester of the East', Ahmedabad is also home to the Gandhi Ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati.

Amongst the many striking things about the city is its architecture known for a fusion of Islamic and Hindu design

principles, its world-class academic and research institutes, its heritage monuments, its fabrics and textiles, its warm and

friendly people and their unforgettable hospitality; above all, its spirit of festivity that continues to dazzle one and all.

Poised as the gateway to India's prosperity, Ahmedabad, the largest city of the state of Gujarat, is well connected by air,

rail and road to all the major cities of India and also offers international connectivity. The city is warm/hot throughout

most of the year, with a mild winter during December and January.

If IIMA PGPX is the knowledge lever, the city of Ahmedabad is the ideal, supporting fulcrum.
