This THIRD EDITION of this festival will travel from Ramallah to the South of Palestine stopping by all the unique landscapes characterizing this land: cities, villages and refugee camps. Faced with increasing isolation, this festival aims to bring a new creative effervescence, a «nomadic stimulation», in a kind of pilgrimage which intertwines human and sacred, music and art, architecture and nature. From Ramallah to the Dead Sea, we can follow the word and the trace of the prophets and pursue a kind of initiatory «song lines».

After the thrilling Ramallah experience, Jerusalem will be the occasion for a tremendous insight in both its contemporary dynamic and incredibly rich legacy as Palestine’s capital.

This year, attention will be given to legendary and historical sites including Jericho and Bethlehem with an original production, created for the festival under the name “The Silk Road: A musical Journey from the Moghol Palace of Kubalaï Khan, Emperor of China, to the Holy City of Jerusalem”.

The travel will conclude with a southern exploration of Palestine through the interesting sites of Hebron and Gaza, passing by the hidden gem of old Al Dahriya to conclude with the spectacular view of the Dead Sea near Rashayda.

A strong Euro-Palestinian dimension will be emphasized during this edition of the festival with a large presence and participation of European artists and technicians, working closely with their Palestinian peers. The festival is the occasion to celebrate cultural diversity, pluralism and tolerance.

AL KAMANDJATI’S STORYFor its third consecutive year, having passed its initiatory phase and succeeded in establishing a unique historical tour throughout the region, the Al Kamandjâti Festival continues its musical quest for a new edition which will create an exceptional confluence of multiple heritages.The landscapes of a country where the sand of the Bedouin desert mingles with the stones of villages perched at a top of the olive groves will form the new steps of a musical labyrinth enhanced by the beauty of the scenes around it.

MUSIC, A KEY TO EMPOWERMENTRamzi Aburedwan grew up in Al Amari Camp in Ramallah. He had a chance to receive a musical education at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music and Angers Conservatory (France). Willing to share his experience, the viola player, composer and educator decided to initiate a cultural movement in his homeland when he founded Al Kamandjâti (“the Violinist”) in 2002.

YOUTH OUTREACHAl Kamandjâti Association aims to initiate the musical awakening of any single child by the discovery of its own inner world; this process includes the teaching of their arabic musical roots but also introduces other musical perspectives such as classical western music. By now, Al Kamandjâti’s educational program includes yearly 2000 children to whom music initiation and learning are provided in 8 Palestinian and Lebanese localities including refugee camps and marginalized zones.

UNITY THROUGH CULTUREAl Kamandjâti strives to make a positive impact on the country by highlighting its cultural heritage, especially in the Palestinian rural areas. To create a new synergy for the palestinian people, the non-profit organization collaborates with local operators, municipalities and institutions throughout the year.

A WORD FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” Marcus GarveyThe artists invited to this festival each year rediscover the primary function of the traditional musician and the bard, and serve as holders of collective memory. Like some Ancient Mages who brought myrrh and rare scents of distant countries, the musician from elsewhere brings this perfume, this flavor of musical emotion.The program of this festival, which focuses mainly on the heritage transmission between people of the East, Asia, Africa and the West, aims to cultivate all the existing musical wealth. Beyond the traditional and classical repertoire, it also affirms the expression of a contemporary creativity. This one will be even more present this year as we will have the chance to fly over sound spaces paradoxically distant at first glance, yet, all able to provoke in their own way this emotion of the “tarab”. We will hear the ethereal and mercurial voice of Yasmine Hamdan to the notes of the pipa lute of Lingling Yu, evoking the celestial vault of a China which will also be the completion of a great musical evocation through the voyage of Marco Polo.The feminine presence is affirmed in this edition as an expression

in its own right.The Deba of Mayotte, this Sufi hadra, is perpetuated on the islands of the Moon (the Comoros of the Arabic “qamar”) sung in Arabic and danced with elegance by these groups of women of Swahili origin. throughout history, the voice has had a sacred role. this is still evident today, as we see the importanant role of the Sufi Inshad in Palestine. The practice of the qanun instrument was strong in the courts of Azerbaijan, widely diffused by Islam and its culture; this qanoun, a trapezoidal cithar that is said to date back to Mesopotamian Antiquity, will be played by the female ensemble of Tarana Aliyeva, while the Uyghur dancer Mukaddas Mijit will turn with the nomadic grace of the Xinjiang region, located at Northwest China.Then, to return to the essence of Al Kamandjâti, “the art of the violin”, from the north of Europe will come one of the most inventive forms orchestrated by the Estonian violinist and singer Marjaa Nuut. Its timeless melodies and dreamlike soundscapes are those of an epic that, sails between dream and reality, and whose magnetism seems to go back to the days when the fairies still lived in the forests.

DEBA OF MAYOTTE, FRANCEA sufi women ritual

Deba is an ensemble consisting of 13 women, from the island Mayotte - a French overseas collectivity in the Indian Ocean. Mayotte is part of the Comoros Islands whose name from arabic «qamar» means the moon. The group’s name also refers to the ceremonial songs and dances that are exclusively performed by women and girls.Deba are sung in Arabic and are based on mystical Sufi rituals. You can hear these songs in different locations on Mayotte - along the road leading to the airport as pilgrims return from Mecca, during a banishing ritual at Ramadan or when celebrating a festival. The accompanying dance is vibrant yet gracious.Dressed in beautiful frocks the women slowly rock back

and forth to the rhythm played on hand drums. A soloist starts, the choir responds, with profundities about earthly and spiritual matters.

THE IRAQI MUSICIAN FURAT QADDOURI AND HIS GROUP “ BAGHDADY MAQAMS”

The Iraqi Maqam is considered to be one of the most important and ancient musical genres in Iraqi music. The group will be presenting the Iraqi Maqam with old traditional Iraqi songs (Basta).The project Baghdadi Maqams is considered as

one of the unique musical projects that deal with the Iraqi musical heritage in a modern way to be appropriate to both current and classical generations. Due to the

current circumstances that make the understanding of rich musical heritage unclear with the lack of the appreciation of this culture, The Baghdadi Maqam is determined to show this type of Iraqi music to all ages in a fashionable manner with preservation of the original spirit.The variety of classical Iraqi musical instruments, including Qanoun, Oud, Djoza and Nay, is an essential factor in this project, which is always accompanied by Maqam readers or singers. Furthermore, the modern school of Maqam established by the late Mohamad al Qubanchi, licensed the use of other instruments like Qanoun and Nay in the Maqam, after years of being exclusive to the DJoza and Santoor. For this reason, the musical enrichment variety of this heritage music is the mainstay of the project Baghdadi Maqam.Great musicians will perform with Furat Qaddouri: vocal: Rita William, Nay: Raghid William, Djoza: Bassam Hawar and percussion: Firat Facil.

MAKAMET, TUNISIAArabic music, a skill for transmission

Established in 2012, on a parents group’s initiative in support of their children, the Tunisian association Makamet has distinguished itself by offering artistic activities and the increasing development of its local sections in the country. Several renowned Tunisian musicians like Zied Gharsa, Asma Ben Ahmed or Sonia Moubarek contributed as well to its reputation.During its shows, a tribute is paid to artists who contributed to the development of Tunisian music to an international dimension as Salah El Mahdi. Thus Makamet participates in the music influence of the country but also

revitalizes Arabic, Turkish and Mediterranean music by renewing its lines, between the worlds and the musical modes (maqam).

TURKISH ENSEMBLE

Classical Turkish music developed in Istanbul and other major Ottoman cities through the palaces, mosques and Sufi lodges of the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman music has a large and varied system of modes or scales known as

makams. Most classic Ottoman ensembles performing nowadays use up to 7 components: tanbour, ney, qanun, oud, kermenche, percussion and vocals. This ensemble created for Al Kamandjati Festival 2018 is composed of musicians usually playing for the Istanbul State Ensemble of Turkish Music Research and Performance. Furkan Bilgi will play classical kermenche, Ibrahim Suat Erbay daf, Vokan Yilmaz ney and Furkan Resuloglu tanbur. They will be performing Tanburi Cemil Bey’s compositions.

DIWAN ENSEMBLE & AHBAB AL MUSTAFA ENSEMBLE, PALESTINEA sufi path from Damascus to Nablus

« If you want to be free, be captured by Love »

Created by Ramzi Aburedwan, Diwan draws his influences from its hometown, Jerusalem, which was, is, and will always be a land of spirituality. It’s composed of the muezzins Munther Alraee from Al Arrub refugee camp, Mossab Shahrouri and Ragheb Qassas from Nablus.Founded ten years ago in Nablus, the Ahbab Al Mustafa Ensemble is devoted to religious Sufi singing.

It mainly performs the Damascene Nabulsi style which is characterized by the spiritual bonds and historical links between Damascus and Nablus. Keen on sharing its knowledge, Ahbab Al Mustafa gathers ten muezzins willing to save the Shami heritage and dreaming to travel the world. Both ensembles aim to document the endangered Sufi legacy, which is nearing extinct, and revive the stunning voices that traditionally perform the unified Athan in the city.

ALSAMER ENSEMBLE, PALESTINETo the roots of bedouin tradition

Al Kamandjâti Festival brings together four musicians and singers who stand as witnesses of the Bedouin lifestyle connected to nature: Omar Sawafta (shahabah and alergol player), Ahmad Amer (singer), Yusef Ibrahim Sawafta (poet of the Northern Jordan Valley Zajjal), and Imad Dar Khalil, a popular artist. Alsamer ensemble offers a mix of folk music, including the art of filstianh samer, al haddah, al badawyat and

al dehieh. It seeks to document the musical heritage of Palestine and transmit it to the next generations.

Performance: 21st April in the Friendship garden (He-bron) at 3 PM (free admission).

AL ZINNAR WOMEN ENSEMBLE - ASSIRA AL SHAMALIA Women’s songs of Palestinian folklore

Al Zinnar Ensemble consists of Al-Huda Charitable Society’s female members who are presenting women’s songs of palestinian folklore associated with important popular ritual in the palestinian daily life such as AHAZIJ. The folklore songs tackle, for example, the return of pilgrims from Makkah, the palestinian weddings or the celebrations of the harvest season. The ensemble’s members present

an integrated painting with a blend of singing, motion and rhythm which produces a beautiful and harmonious artistic result. The band aims to highlight the rich Palestinian feminist heritage which is remarkable due to its beauty and originality rooted in the Palestinian land throughout the ages.

GAZA SUFI ENSEMBLE

The Sufi Gaza ensemble was founded in 2017 on the occasion of Al-Kamandjati Festival of spiritual and traditional music. The ensemble presents several artistic performances combining musical tracks, praise, religious and Sufi supplications.The artist Abd Al-Majid Erekat and the artist Nader Hamouda participate with the musical band that consists of the Oud player Ismail Daoud, the Qanoun player Anas Al-Najjar, the Nay player Abbass Ussama Jahajooh, the contrabass player Khamis Abu Sha’baan and the rhythm musicians Iyad and Sameh Abu Leila, Saeed Shahin and Mohammed Hameed.

GAZA CHANTING ENSEMBLE & GUESTSThe Gaza Inshad group was founded on the occasion of Al-Kamandjati Festival of spiritual and traditional music. The group presents a variety of religious supplications, jingles and praises of the Prophet with the participation of elite singers with the accompanying tambourines and rhythm

instruments.The artist Abd Al-Majid Erekat, the Original Art Band and Al-Yarmouk Band for praises of the Prophet participates in the Inshad.

AMWAJ CHILDREN CHOIR & LES PETITS CHANTEURS DE LYONWith Lara Jamal, Mathilde Vittu and Thibaut Louppe, Choir conductors

Founded in 2015 in Hebron and Bethlehem, Amwaj (the arabic name for “waves”) is a school choir that offers varied activities involving choral singing, voice training, foreign languages, music theory, conducting, introduction to piano and percussions, theatre and more. The choir performs with local ensembles such as Ramallah Orchestra, Bethlehem Strings, and international choirs such as Choir of London, Oslo Philharmonic Choir.

Les Petits Chanteurs de Lyon is one of the leading children’s choirs in France. Founded in 799, it is the most ancient musical institution of the town. In July 2017,

30 children (aged 10-14 years old) stayed in the Holy Land for a performance at St Anne’s and a one-week joint residency with the Amwaj children’s choir. For Al Kamandjati Festival 2018, 15 children (aged 14-17 years old) will be gathered for a new residency in Bethlehem.

SALMAN AL AMMARI AND AL MASS ENSEMBLE, KUWAIT« Fann al-bahar », the art of the sea (on condition)

Called in the countries of the fann al-bahar Gulf, “ the art of the sea “, this rich directory, interpreted by the pearl fishermen, finds itself from Kuwait to the Sultanate of Oman. Formerly, the journey of those fishermen lasted four months. The nahham who accompanied the trip had mission to encourage them. He intoned solo melismatic songs telling the exploits of the sailors, the dangers of the crossing, the nostalgia for country and relatives. It’s well known that the pearls of this region were already appreciated by the Sumerians. This arabic art is characterized as a fruit of the journey which borrows from African and Indo-Iranian cultural areas. Its polyphonic aspect and the expirations which punctuate it send us back to the breathing techniques of ritual Sufi dhikr. Salman Mohamad Moubarak al Ammari is a popular and fervent ambassador of Kuwaiti singing and music, as an oud player.

MAARJA NUUT, ESTONIAA twirling descent into the roots of the dream

Maarja suggests during her unique performance a mystical landscape made of forests, shadows and mutterings. By the evocation’s power of her video projections and the circular rhythms created by the electronical loops, Maarja knows how to sublimate the quintessential instrument of Estonia: the fiddle. She brings the listener in an occult travel, making him going through dark undergrowths, picking up one’s ears to ancient ballads and lullabies, galloping on the waves of an ethereal dream.The 21rst of April, she will transfer her quirky moodscape into the vast desert of Rashayda. From the deep baltic forest to the utter destitution of the Palestinian desert,

the minimalist sound of the violin and her voice will bring out northern Estonian ancestral traditions as smooth and contemporary fairytales accessable to everyone.Performances: 15th April in Saint Ann (Jerusalem) at 6.00 PM (free admission),

LINGLING YU, CHINAIn the course of pipa strings

“ The thinnest strings resound as a sudden rain, the biggest as a smothered whisper. Together, they shape the melody like pearls of different sizes falling on a tray of jade. “ Bai Juyi, The Song of the Pipa

Lingling Yu thanks the masters players of pipa, starting by the living treasure Dehai Liu, from which her knowledge bloomed. Her performance, driven by an exceptional technical mastership, is powerful, accurate, warm and creative, characterized by the clarity and the subtlety of the intention. The repertoire of the pipa is shared between the music called « military » which vigorously describes the legendary fights, and the music called « literary » which is inspired by poetry, landscapes and historical dramas. This alliance between passion and serenity evokes the two complementary forces driving the Chinese philosophy that we find in all the aspects of life and universe: the Yin and the Yang. Lingling Yu bears in her mimetic play this harmony of the nature.

MING ZENG, CHINA

Ming Zeng will accompany Lingling with the sound of its bamboo dizi flute. Used to play for operas, this great flutist master associated to the virtuoso play of pipa, promises ethereal landscapes, divine exhalations thanks to a deep chinese traditional atmosphere.

KYRIAKOS KALAITZIDIS, GREECEA mediterranean journey in music from Greece to East

Kyriakos Kalaitzidis, Greek composer and oud player, is the artistic director of En Chordais that he established in 1993. He’s nowadays considered as one of the most notorious musicians in the field of the post-Byzantine and Mediterranean modal music. The peculiarity of this musician lies both in its virtuosity and in the care of the detail which he grants in the study of instruments, their fabrication and origins of the music; what confers him all the distinction that he benefits as performance artist

and oud professor in the Mediterranean area. The key word of Kyriakos is the exchange, so he takes advantage of its tours to improve its opening to the world and to collaborate with musicians from China as pipa player Lingling Yu, from India such as the sarangi player Dhruba Ghosh or still from Canada, following the example of its accomplices musicians of the band Constantinople.

ZIYA TABASSIAN, IRANThe percussive convolutions of the tombak

Ziya Tabassian began playing the tombak (Iranian drum) at the age of ten. After a brief initiation period in Iran, he continued his autodidactic training in Quebec, his adopted homeland.Tireless traveller, he’s continuing his personal research in advanced courses with Bahman Rajabi (Teheran),

Aziz Alami (Fez), Trichy Sankaran (Toronto), Mısırli Ahmet (Istanbul), Shree Sundarkumar and Yogesh Samsi (India).As a percussionist, Ziya Tabassian is professionally active in early music (medieval, Renaissance and Baroque), as well as contemporary, current and world music. His first solo album, Tombak, stemming from his acoustic explorations and research on the rhythmic

cycles of early Persian music, was released in 2007 on the Ambiances Magnétiques label.

The duduk is easily the most recognizable Armenian musical instrument, featured more often in funerals, due to its melancholy tone, than in weddings, although it is also used during celebrations or for dances. With different variations and names, it is used throughout the region – the Balkans, the Middle East, the Caucasus, and Central Asia – but it is considered to be a national symbol in

particular by the Armenians, a status that was cemented with UNESCO recognition in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.The continuation of this instrument’s practice and strong identity is ensured by a new generation of Armenian musicians represented by Haig Sarikouyoumdjian and Georgy Minasyan. Graduate of the Yerevan State Conservatory in the department of choral conducting, Georgy follows the path drawn by the famous pioneer Armenian composer and ethnomusicologist Komitas, symbol of the whole struggle of this nation.

ALAA AZZAM, PALESTINEA tribute to old famous arabic and sufi songs

“The Beautiful Time“ is a musical show in which the artist Alaa Azzam presents classical musical Tarab songs by the top artists from the late 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century.Azzam also presents various heritage songs with Aleppo Codex. Additionally, his Oriental Ensemble will perform with him in their musical selection.

Holders of one of the biggest classic traditions of the East, Azeri are the poets of Azerbaijan, this mountainous earth of the southeast Caucasus where even the young

children know how to recite the loving poetry of the ghazal.Due to the invasions of the nomads Seldjouks of Central Asia, in X °and XII °centuries, the people of Azerbaijan are essentially of Turkmen origin; it’s nevertheless the Persian Sassanides who will breathe their own musical system, the dumugham, close to the current Iranian system and the famous dâstgah. The term which indicates this art: mugham comes from the Arabic word maqam. As in Arabic music, it means: «mode» or «musical scale», before giving the generic name to this musical style.The singer Nigar Shabanova will be accompanied with the tar player Rovshan Gurbanov and the kamantcha of Khayyam Mammadov.

AITANA DE LOS REYES Y SU GENTE, SPAINThe fire of Jerez gypsy flamenco dance

In the twentieth century, the flamenco which was informally danced at gitano celebrations in Spain was considered the most «authentic» form of flamenco. This «flamenco puro» is considered the form of performance flamenco closest to its gitano influences and thereby weaves the link between oriental and occidental artistic ways and gestures.Proud gypsy of artistic lineage, Aitana is daughter of a guitarist father and a singer mother. Descendant of Viejo Agujetas and Familia Amaya, her dance takes root in Santa Maria’s Puerto where, in the middle of the weddings and other gypsy festivities, her vocation was born. She gets, for the first time, on stage at four years old, before traveling the whole world, passing primarily by Jerez de la Frontera and the Chiqui de Jerez’s dancing school. An alloy of strength and sweetness characterizes its choreographies which she has created herself since her earliest childhood though providing to it an important part of improvisation.

ANUJ MISHRA - LUCKNOW GHARANA SCHOOL, NORTH INDIAKathak dance, a celestial devotion at the Mughal Court

In palaces of the Mongols Emperors and courts of the Maharajas we can find one of the most amazing choreographic traditions of North India. From the status of art totally linked to the devoutness, the Kathak grew from being in contact with these courts, integrating elements of Persian culture among the three important north-Indian schools dedicated to this art: Benares, Lucknow and Jaipur. The rhythmic virtuosity and the

gesture of the body and soul’s whirlwind, make of Kathak a celestial expression. Anuj Mishra, has become in a few years in addition to his father Arjun- a prodigy of Kathak dance. Few dancers combine beauty of the body, technical feat and mimetic depiction of the feelings. Astonishingly graceful, Anuj Mishra realizes a difficult synthesis between a dazzling pure dance technique and an innate sensitivity that allows him to express a whole range of emotions.

Creation «The Silk Road»Following the traces of Marco Polo, this show will reveal the magic of a mythical Orient described in the « book of the wonders of the world » of the great traveler.

From precious stones of the palaces of former days -like the one of the chinese emperor Kubilai Khan to the arid steppes of Kazakhstan, we will follow the footsteps of the silk road. Poetesses of the steppes, bards of Kazakhstan, mystical and orthodox songs from Turkey, court music of ancient China or sufi dances of Palestine, of the Moghols courts or of the legendary Samarkand, will reveal a nomadic Orient which will go until the sacred one of Jerusalem that Marco Polo learned well during his travels.

The Silk Road is a wonderful invitation to discover traditional music and dances whose footsteps date back to the 13th and 14th centuries, through the large geographical space that Marco Polo crossed. Chinese classical music, epic kazakh songs, Indian Moghal kathak dance, azeri poetry as well as the beautiful armenian duduk or the flute of the steppers of Caucasus will be an invitation to a voyage towards the richness of the Central Asia and the nomad heritage. Dalal Abu Amneh is a renowned Palestinian singer originally from Nazareth. She has been crafting a global Palestinian identity and advocating for the Palestinian cause through her touching music, which is imbued with the Palestinian traditions of folk, national pride, and freedom. In her traditional show/album called Ya Sitti, she’s valorizing the heritage of Galilee, telling handed down stories from local grandmothers, accompanied by a group of old women, whom she calls the Palestinian heritage guards.Actor, director and playwright Amer Hlehel is based in Haifa. He has written several plays, including “Taha”, “Lanterns of The King of Galilee”, “Juha and Bahlol”,

“What the Story is All About”, and “Almushakhesati – the Player”.Hlehel’s film work includes Palestinian films: “Personal Affairs”, “The Idol”, “The Time that Remains”, “Amreeka”, “Man Without a Cell Phone” and the Golden Globe award-winning “Paradise Now”.Hlehel is the Director of the Arab Culture Association in Haifa and a Sundance Institute Theatre Program alumnus.Al Kamandjati orchestra For the first time in Palestine, Al Kamandjati brings together talented orchestra musicians from across Palestine to perform in the collaborative Silk Road show. Danielle Williams is the conductor of this orchestra, composer, conductor, and multi-instrumentalist whose passion lies in using music as a tool for social change. SONDOUK AL AJAB/ ADEL AL TARTEER

Adel Al Tarteer is a theatrical artist, storyteller and director of “Sondouk Al Ajab.” He is often referred to as Abu Al Ajab and the father of the Palestinian theater, as one of the most important pioneers and founders of the contemporary Palestinian theatrical movement. In the early 1990s, Adel Al Tarteer started focusing on children’s theatre and invented the character of the

storyteller Abu Al Ajab and his “Sondouk Al Ajab” (Al Ajab’s Box of Tales) who travels with his “magical box” to present a series of popular and traditional tales for children. Over the past two decades, Al Tarteer has developed the idea and create 6 boxes with different sizes, shapes and working mechanisms. These physical boxes help depict to children the metaphor of how we travel with our stories.

The three friends start a journey full of adventures. They start to know more about the village, its food and traditional games that have been lost in the city.
